Alaska Dip Netting - Sockeye Salmon Catch, Cook, and Preserve

  • We tried our luck at dip netting for sockeye salmon this year! News was the Kasilof was running good opening day so we quick packed up the truck and drove south. You must be an Alaskan resident to dip net so this was our first opportunity.
This gives us a chance to quickly fill the freezer with great quality food. We did not hit our limit this trip but still ended up with lots of food for us all.

Nice work! And so much fun dipnetting those salmon! Some suggestions from a fellow Alaskan…gill fish as soon as you bring them in to bleed them out, fillet fish down both sides without gutting or beheading which is quicker, much easier & less bloody. Use a grippy mat under salmon when filleting so they won’t slip around.

      • 3 tbsp honey
      • 2 tbsp olive oil
      • 1 tbsp tbsp apple cider vinegar
      • 1/4 cup aminos or soy sauce
      • 2 cloves garlic minced
      • 1 tbsp grated ginger
      • 1/4 tsp salt
      • 1/4 tsp pepper
      • 2 tbsp chopped scallions
      • 1 tsp white sesame seeds

Use pressure cooker. You'll be able to soft fish bones and increase eatable stuff outcome. Extra calcium good for human bones as well.

Next time hon, watch a few youtube videos on fileting, but keep your bones with meat and take a spoon and scrape off meat, use it for salmon patties, but of course it does make good dog food for the puppy. Just a way of giving you more meat. My sister boils meat off and uses it for salmon chowder. You guys did awesome!

Next time take a spoon and scrape the the back bone to make salmon burgers, you’ll be surprised at how much meat is left after you filet them. Also when you vacuum seal more than one filet to a bag, skin side out, meat to meat. That way if you get freezer burn the meat is protected, so leave the skin to the outside.

Hey guys nice Sockeye love them by the way if you like caviar here's the recipe 48 oz of water 16 oz of salt mix up until dissolved cold water now you want to break the eggs away from the membrane you can get a plastic great from Home Depot it's like a plastic like a plastic screen that has holes the size of the eggs and you just rub the eggs gently inside those membranes and they'll come through the screen now if you're lucky enough and you know that it's a female you can strip the eggs right if it's still alive into the Ziplock bags that's what I normally do now you take those eggs you have that are free and you put it into the water and salt mixture typically go 30 minutes I usually go about 20 because I know that I'm going to be eating eating with this caviar and it's not going to last very long a little bit longer it'll get more saltier and you can adjust the salt sometimes I use about 14 12 to 14 oz for my taste but this stuff is wonderful once you bring it properly. I recommend this book buy Jack Whelan books name smoking salmon and trout tanning freezing pickling and more you can get off Amazon I tell people it's the Bible of canning and just about anything else we're going to do you can cross uses for other species too he has a whole section like how to make loxs and it's wonderful I've done it it takes about 2 days to make Nova lox but there's lots of good stuff in that book and it's worth it really you'll be amazed

You should not be cleaning those fish in that stream by your house. . Those kasilof fish are full of round worms. Now, you are spreading parasites to a watershed that does not have parasites. I’m serious. Please be a good neighbor.

That is a good point that never crossed our minds. We have always cleaned fish in the same water they came from. Thank you for bringing it up or we likely would have done it again.

It’s a good idea to freeze those Kasilof fish before doing sushi. Be cautious with caviar, too. I won’t caviar Kenai fish, either. In a couple weeks you can get pristine silvers in your backyard that are parasite free, for caviar.
