A Trip to Town - Dealing with water in our dry cabin

  • Living in a dry cabin was not necessarily the plan. Here we take a day to head to town and fill up our extra water jugs, shower, and get some laundry done. Hauling in water is a lot of work, but hasn't been as bad as we were expecting.
I am sure every season our approach to water will look different, so we wanted to document what our first winter is looking like so far. Luckily on this day we had some beautiful weather to be out and about in.

I would put my priority on water, not eggs. Dont get me wrong I think they need both but water should be priority #1 after food and shelter.

That's no joke. I thought she said they were 18 gallons. If true that's around 150.12 lbs. or 68 kilos. That's like TWO FREAKING BAGS of concrete he slung around like nothing. FYI one gallon of water is 8.34 lbs.

I've lived Off Grid several places, always going after water it seemed, brought back dreading moments, LOL. I'd always bought drinking water at Walmart though. Thankfully you have a place for laundry & showering nearby. Guess I was ruffing it much more. Slowly, but surely you'll both have things farther along on your place. Great video, thanks.

In case you didn't know about it, there is a water fillup in Trapper Creek that is an easy pull-thru. It's about 10 cents per gallon and has an easy fill spout. It's located just past the library on Devonshire :) The water gets tested regularly. We use it all the time. I'd be cautious about drinking anything from the side of the road up there--likely to be contaminated with heavy metals.

We have used the trapper creek pump for the big tank, but it’s east enough to fill the small jugs at the spring. We have spoke with some locals and a lot of them use only the spring for everything. We were told that when testing the spring it’s sometimes high in iron.

Might want to try those egg holders that they sell at camping supply places. Then with a couple of those shipping bubble layers around you would be good. The other way is save any narrow tall bottles as you can break the eggs into the bottle and they will stack. Just pour them out as needed. Old back packing trick. Done right it doesn't even break the yolks. Always fun to watch the day to day learning without the excess made up drama of other programming. Having a dog pull on the lead is annoying and in the slippery dangerous. Huskies are bred to be out front pulling so it is a trait you have to overcome. One way is to keep a short lead not taut but short with her alongside you. Carry a dowel (not a club just a light 1/2") or such and swing it like a baton in front of her at the command of heel. If her nose gets forward the dowel will wack her lightly and she will learn to stay at your side. Another way with which I have had limited success is a pinch collar. Looks like a brutal medieval torture collar but in reality since they learn instantly not to tighten the collar (inward points but like a choke chain) it is not. As with all training it depends on the dog. Use the method that works. When the weather has opened up another trick is to walk her and change direction repeatedly. Keep the leash loose and only give it a sharp tug (using a choke chain) releasing it quickly if she doesn't immediately turn with you. Keep 180 degreeing the direction. Do this for five or ten minutes at a time and you will quickly not need to tug at all. Make it a game but issue the command just once then enforce it. Don't hack with your voice repeatedly or they learn that you aren't ordering you are negotiating. Stop every now and again and restart. You can have her sit when you stop or just stand by your side whatever you prefer but she should do it consistently. Keep an eye on her attention span and quit before she gets bored. I also trained mine to "lead" on command so if I was going up a narrow gangway I would have the dog lead out in front but still with a slack leash. I trained my Labs for field work and it is both challenging and fun. As well as good time together. A well mannered dog trained properly is a joy to share your life with and your friends will appreciate it greatly.

Hi guys, Just wanted to let you know from experience on our end. Your truck sounded as if it has a manifold exhaust leak. While watching you get the truck warmed up it looked as if exhaust was coming out by your front tire. If so the CO2 can build up fast in your truck. Just wanted to let you know just in case. We want you to be safe. April & Mike

I think they have water at the gas station in Willow for free, might be better for yall?

We’ve melted snow for water a couple of times, mostly out of curiosity and to just try it.
In order to get a decent amount of water from snow we found you have to melt quite a bit of it in a few batches. If we were ever in need we would for sure melt snow but this system doesn’t take too much extra effort that we are willing to do.
