@@suzonlommel3737 Another one much like "The Outsiders" that my students and I actually read aloud was "Walk Two Moons". We read the these treasures aloud as a class so that every student could love them regardless of abilities. We took turns reading, no one was required to read, the only rule was everyone had a book open and followed to the best of their ability. If anyone stumbled or got stuck on a word it was fair game to help the reader by throwing out the word verbally. Check out Walk Two Moons if you liked The Outsiders! 😉

Mick, so good to see you again! From my perspective, as a 71 year-old lady, you didn't make Any mistakes. You made opportunities for growth and learning. This Life that you are creating is for you. You may create it in any fashion that you choose, and it will be perfect for you. It will be yours. Receiving help is not weakness. It is, in fact, strength. Anyone who finds fault in another person, is showing just how little they love themselves. Sad for them, really. You have great artistry in you in so many areas and levels. And you are wise beyond the # of years spent on the planet. I look forward to your sharing whatever you put your heart into. You are remarkable.

The landlord hired me to take care of all his machines and do a bunch of jobs for him. I’m working on a skid movable off grid hot tub with a shower. Monitoring power usage for solar install and working in finishing touches before it’s ready for full time road life or property ownership.

I don’t want to be yet another person commenting on your journey and telling you how you could have done it better. What I will say is that there is wisdom in learning from those who came before us. I understand the desire for independence and wanting to do things on your own. I think that you can still accomplish that while getting guidance. When you are on a limited budget, it is so important to make the best use of your resources. There is no shame in getting assistance to learn what materials to use and when to use them or how to build a structure that will protect you from the elements of every season. You did an amazing job with what you had. You took on a huge task that many individuals twice your age wouldn’t attempt. Best of luck moving forward with your journey.

Mad respect for your parents who, knowing the struggles and challenges you were working through, probably had to fight every fiber in their being to ignore the urge to come help and do, and show you how it's done and by doing so would have robbed you of the full experience of figuring things out for yourself

Hmmm, I guess I’ll be the only one to disagree. As a born again Christian I believe you cannot love a child too much. You can spoil them too much but love? Nope. Helping him in love and communicating that would have been a great help. At 18. He’s still a child. But that’s my humble opinion and someone who knows the dangers of the Alaskan wilderness. Ijs.
Mom and dad: WWJD? He would not leave an unprepared 18 year old out in the Fairbanks winter cold. No support from you? Yeah. Badly done mom and dad. He could have died trying to prove to you two heroes in his life trying to prove he could do it. SMH. 🙏🏼

Isn’t it wonderful that God gave all of us free will to do things differently. I pray I know my grown kids and grandkids enough to know when I should step in and when I should keep my “helping” nose out of their business and let them stand on decisions, choices and actions they have made. I am amazed at the way different families work and help each other. At 70 years old I can still learn a thing or two from channels like yours, not the physical work, I am happy where I am in life, but seeing you by yourself , or with your friends on sight seeing and doing trips. Now THAT is where I believe you are doing yourself a favor. That old saying “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” is pure truth! Take care my young friend. This old lady stands with you on every mistake made. Why? Because you name, claim and learn from those mistakes saying never again . I admire that.

I don't know about Dave, but Brooke made it pretty clear on her channel that they were respecting Mick's wishes. That he absolutely, categorically did not want their help, and wanted to do it with his own resources as much as possible. If it were me, I 100% would have taken my parents advice on something they're So incredibly, intimately familiar with! But I'm 40, not 18, and I'm pretty sure I didn't want anything else from them when I was that age either lol.

@@albertarose1433 I assume you have intimate knowledge of the behind the scene's of this young man's life. If not, you are making unsubstantiated claims. Unless you have intimate insight into Mick's life and that of his circle, you couldn't possibly know what safety nets may or may not have been put in place for backup.
You may feel you are being humble, but the tone of your post suggests otherwise. I will concede that tone can get distorted in written words though.
As a Christian, it's important to handle condemnation carefully. A Christian will also tend to rely upon God instead of humans for wisdom, safety and guidance. If we didn't, every God fearing man and woman would never have pioneered and settled harsh lands like Alaska.
I would also point out that those who settled these lands did not have access to even a sliver of the technology we have today. That, in itself, provides a vast safety net.

I'm a 70 some year old woman. You and I will never meet but I can't tell you how proud of you I am. Try to use the critical remarks to help you develop a thick skin (which one apparently needs to operate a RUclips channel). Also take courage to put one foot carefully in front of the other, from all the positive comments from people who are cheering you on. How many 18 year olds do you know who have accomplished what you have and who dream big dreams and follow through, mistakes and all, as you have? You're young. You're just starting out. And you're doing so with a bang. You're living your dreams out loud and sharing them. You're not afraid to learn from your mistakes. Had my life turned out differently I would have forged ahead and followed a similar dream for my own life. Never forget to give your day to God each morning and you'll be fine. It won't be perfect. Lots of days you'll land on your head. But you'll be fine. God bless you.

Sorry about your friend. My hubs and I were hit by a DD 3 years ago. Our lives haven’t been the same. With that, I’m 43 and still making mistakes. Life is always about learning, new lessons, mistakes, good days, bad days, all of it. Ps.. I also live in Michigan but I’m so ready to hit the road and head out west or somewhere other than here. Stay safe and enjoy your travels. Pss…hurt people, hurt people. Sad, isn’t it? 💫

I'm glad to hear your friend survived the car accident and I hope he recovers fully and speedily. Merry Christmas to you and your family! I've enjoyed following your journey this year. You're definitely a positive reflection of your parents, and your own person at the dawn of your adulthood. You've opted for the School of Hard Knocks, in one of the most public and vocal arenas imaginable, and I applaud you for your efforts. You started with raw land and a tent; you ended the year with a fully built cabin you can live out of while building cabin #2. So you didn't brazen it out in place the first winter; you still own the land, and the cabin still stands, and you're already planning next steps. That's not failure, that's humility and sanity, which will serve you well long term. You can think clearly, you can express yourself well, you're unafraid of making and learning from mistakes. That's a long-term recipe for success, and I wish you plenty of it.

I totally get it. Built a house in my 20s from an old barn and people called it "cheating" because there was an existing structure.
We replaced every wall, rebuilt the roof, poured a concrete slab, and labored for what seemed like forever. Learning to ignore the detractors and be "the man in the arena" at a young age is a blessing. I'm looking forward to watching your land blossom!

You are wise, man. The lessons on how to live you are demonstrating and talking about here are things people struggle to learn for their whole lifes, and you seem to have them inside you already at a very young age. You can be proud of yourself for that, if you ask me.
Also, good on you for being able to appreciate the value in community, friendship and sharing moments and struggle. As you have already mention, it is way more valuable the memories you are creating here and relationships you are building and enjoying than any kind of internet image you can create.

Hey Mick! This is a great video! You do a fantastic job of narration. I criticize my own comments (yes, these!) half to death, so I cannot imagine doing all that you've done and not having those little critiques running around in my head. I don't even need help from "arm chair critics" to get to me! I'm off to see your art channel, so glad you gave us the link.
I have one thought I'd like to put across to you: NO ONE goes forward in life and manages to follow their plan exactly. Ever. Life is what happens while you're making other plans, and that is rock solid reality. Folks who think they can edit other people's lives with hindsight are just cranky. They may actually mean well, but they don't understand this bottom line truth. Thank you for taking us along for this unforgettable first leg of your journey. I'm excited to see what comes next! May God bless you richly and draw you to Himself in 2024.

Mick, I am so proud of all you accomplished. You built a cabin on your own land and had at least some fun with friends. What was I doing at 18? Touring around Europe, doing nothing but enjoying life and friendships. Which is not bad for an 18 year old, but does not help with having a home of your own and "toiling for your food." You are doing great-amazing! You only made a few mistakes, you did NOT get most everything wrong. I am praying for Daniel. Merry Christmas, Mick!
