Salmon Fishing - Catch and Cook

- We caught salmon! Fishing was something we have both been looking forward to ever since we moved to Alaska. Of course we had to do it our way and figure it out mostly for ourselves with trial and error. We definitely have a lot of skill to learn when it comes to filleting the fish, but we make it work and I am very proud of us.
We are going to make time to do quite a few more fishing trips before the end of the season. A quick adventure this time though, because next we start building frames and lifting walls!

You two may want to watch Simple Living Alaska, they can filet a fish better than any I have seen:
You should watch simple living alaska how they do their salmon.
heres a you tube channel to help you .Simple living alaska these 2 are a wealth of knowledge ,, good luck
I second this. Eric and Ariel are amazing.
I love watching your videos. Such a matched couple. Lori does not play to the camera but just straight talk to loved ones who must be sitting on edge of their seats like I am. Cori you are a rare young man.....I love you both like my own.
I am 87 and been house bound for three years after a very busy life and watch lots of videos that have allowed me to learn a lot. This is my very first time to send a comment. I pray a lot and am watching for some very good things to happen after all you have done a magnificent job of working through.
Waiting with antisipation for everything you so beautifully manage to get through.
Your camp site looks like an explosion in a flee market and the rain and mud would have done me in.Blessings
Check out simple living Alaska RUclips channel they can most of their salmon and other ways of preserving them
Nice work you two! Love seeing you learn/grow! Too many kids these days just say "I cant" Instead of.. "Ill figure it out"! In a few years you will both look back at this video as your canning your copper river reds and laugh at the pinks you USED to be ok with 😁. For Fileting them try a piece of outdoor carpet to help keep them stable while you filet them. If you get a chance (signal) Simple living Alaska has some GREAT videos showing all you need to know about it. Eric and Ariel have been at it for a while now and have come a LONG way as will you Two! Keep up the great work and Keep building the dream so many of us wish we would have when we were your age!
I kept checking back all day today, hoping to find a new one from you kids. Wonderful that you took some time to try out a "new to you" type of fishing. Remember to find some joy in your day every day. You are doing an awesome job in truly rough conditions.
So look forward to your videos!!! U 2 are tough kids!!! 😊
Personally enjoy the videos and reality of experiences you are sharing, “trial & error” 😎
Pinks arent really worth while unless they are very bright right from saltwater. When they get a hump starting they are pretty much dog food quality. Thats why that one was near white in color. Lots of other AK youtubers to learn from out there, id suggest you watch some of their fishing vids.
I love that the Menards shirts are making an appearance 😅 good work on catching some fish! It looked delicious! 😁
I suppose we still have to represent?
@remotelifealaska I agree 🤷♀️😅
You guys should look towards making a combination slow smoker and cold smoker, especially if the plan is to live there through the winter.. Makes storage a breeze.
I am so stressed for you .. Winter is closer than you realize ..
Agreed
I would love to get fresh salmon. ❤ awesomeness
Great job. All looks yummy. Nice watching you have some fishing fun.
Shouldn't you concentrate on building a shelter and cutting firewood? Winter IS coming!
Need food for the winter!!
Not to be morbid but a warning.....There were 3 people found dead in the Colorado Rockies of Colorado, recently. They were trying to live off the grid but sadly unprepared for the harshness of winter.
@@elisawall7558 They are living in a pop-up and will 100% not have their cabin up and insulated before the snow flies. They're best off getting jobs in town and finding a rental. work all winter and come back in the spring to keep going. Alaska is not a place for naivety.
add flourescent yarn on hook .cast slowly reel in then repeat
Also one thing cks the fluids on all the you have purchased mill doesn't sound right when shuts off. Make sure multi blades and sharper the blades including chainsaws they last longer. Hoses.
I really enjoy watching you two adapt to Alaskan life.
For a quick "smoked" fish use some of the grocery store bottled smoke. Cook and add it. A few drops work wonders. Almost as good as smoked if you haven't the real setup. Works well for dips as well. Fish makes a good 'tunafish' sandwich chopped pickles and onions mixed in with mayonnaise--yumm! I have been eating salmon here in SE Alaska for over seventy years and a fresh caught Humpy is a darn good eating fish. There are some salmon snobs around that will tell you different and I won't argue that some are better but they are all good. My all time personal favorite would be a white, winter King but I wouldn't turn down any. I do prefer them in their bright saltwater colors before they ever get to fresh water.
Could hardly wait for your new video this week! I’m very impressed with your willingness to jump in and try new things!
Be careful discarding them fish guts and stuff you'll have bears and everything over there. ❤
Y’all are doing a great job settling in and acclimating to the Alaska life!
Great job
No news on the tractor, I hope you get it up and running soon.
Looks like you guys caught some dog food. Pinkies I used to feed to my dog all the time.
thats what I was thinking too
Awesome job
I enjoy your adventures but fear what will happen when winter comes in the not too distant future.I know you are used to the cold winters at Rice Lake but wisconsin doesnt get nearly as much snow as Alaska. Hope you have a plan B for winter since your cabin probably wont be ready.Talk to you neighbors to get advice for your road ahead.Look for rivers that have sockeye or silver salmon.they are much better for eating.Best of luck and hope things will go better for you.
Best advice I've seen given to them. They need to both find jobs and a rental in town for the winter, and start back up in the spring. Cabin won't be ready before the snow flies and that pop-up won't cut it.
The fat of the salmon will help you stay warm in the winter months of Alaska.
Glad you enjoyed fishing. Wow great catch. I love salmon fish.
Did catch one once, but it broke my rod in half and got away. So I still buy salmon from the store .
Nothing tastes better than a fresh catch. Good job guys. Your dog is beautiful and so cute. I love all dogs.
You two make me smile at how you just keep pushing through everything that is thrown at you. And the 4 jars are a success. Can't wait to see you build the cabin.
Feeding yourselves from the wild. Priceless!👍👍👌
Thanks, a fun day fishing made me hungry. ✌🏻👊🏼
We grew up in Palmer, Alaska...we enjoy your videos. A good way to cook salmon is wrapped in foil with some lemon juice squirted on top...your video is making our mouths water...
I envy you guys. I would love to go there. Minimal people, wildlife.
Can as much as u can before winter u will be thankful always be ahead in Alaska 👍
Make sure you each have bear spray on you, if not a hand cannon (44 magnum or 357 magnum). And speaking of fishing in Alaska, you may want to give dip netting a go, you can get a lot of salmon that way.
We carry bear protection with us while out and about. As for dip netting, we can’t participate until next year when we have been a resident for 1 year.
Tighten that drag just a little bit and work that fish you ain’t gotta reel em in like a bass or blue gill or sunfish or brim…… and I do know when me and my family move up in the next couple years from NC imma miss fishing for 20-60 pound catfish and hunting white tail and wild hogs. But I’m sure hunting moose and caribou and bear and catching halibut, trout, and salmon will make up for it…
Excellent video.. I prefer to learn from doing it myself, right or wrong you always learn.
You caught pink salmon. Try targeting red salmon or Silver salmon. They are way better tasting. Honestly, pinks are usually used for smoking or dog food. That may be why you don't like it that much.
Rubs or spices if smoking them cold smokers or hot smokers you can make with wood mill plain wood box frame different wood for different tastes. Also build a fire why coals rack lay the fish down lay pine bushes around the fish ck once a while pull pine bushes off.
Yes Simple Living Alaska will help you alot for cleaning the Salmon. I am i avid fisherman but have never caught or cleaned one so im no help. On thing i would say is bleed them while on the stringer in the water.
As a start put down an old towel that you don't care about wetted down. Then the humpies won't slide around as much. Rinse as needed. Wrap in foil with a strip of bacon (Pinks are not as oily as other salmon but delicious).
I can and smoke salmon every year you can add peppers onion and or garlic to the jars and salt and then stuff it till it’s 1/2 from the top
I love canned salmon in place of tuna
I always personally remove the skin as I also dont like it plus it always sticks to the jars lol you did great for your first time!!
You need to hunt if you are not shopping for groceries. Also solar power. refrigerator will be handy everflo solar power see if you can get sponsors.
Live seeing y’all catch salmon ❤
Ohhhh and save the head bones and carcus and pressure can it or slow cook it for dog food once done jar it up up add some water for a bit of added liquid and pressure can it same amount of time your dog will love you
You need to boil the carcasses down for dog food. They don’t need the good meat. And a smoker as others have suggested is a necessity
I guess one learns how to do better by doing I think we could agree that two jars would have been the right amount and that making sure the jar has enough water to cover the salmon and that the jar seals proper.
if you cook it all , the fish will last longer than if you dont, so if you do cook it all now, you will have alittle to eat tomorrow , or as you say give some to the dogs but they like cooked too.
Well, you guys are doing great. I'm just letting you guys know that. Because yeah, you can watch other RUclips. So you can learn and all that what? When I'm trying to tell you, you guys are doing great. And glad you got your pick up fix, that's awesome. Have fun enjoy life up there
You need to invest in better gear and get the Silvers coming soon.
Are there ticks like we have in Wisconsin
Fun times! Salmon is good eating!
Great catch!
Fishing is definitely on our list to try next year.
Start at the tail and cut a long the spine towards the head. 😉 you’ll get it eventually… we all have first times!! Good job on catching!
Also, light colored could mean it has already spawned, pink is hasn’t spawned yet? Not for sure on that! Lol
Thanks for the tip!
@@sonyaandreanoff6765 didnt spawn but very close to, thats why it had such a pronounced hump. Pinks are also called "Humpies" for that reason.
Best salmon I ever had was an Atlantic salmon served to me by a French friend. She cooked it skin down sprinkled with kosher salt and olive oil. Sooooo good. But by this time next year you’ll have 101 ways to cook salmon. Good job.
Nice fish glad you caught one..sorry your first got off.Nice your getting out and enjoying yourselves not all work👍 Beautiful fish. Fish for your dinner.
Doesn't matter what kind of fish you catch, its still good food, nice job .you made me hungry. Shelter, food and fire and you will make it through anything. Stay safe and enjoy.
I have always preferred salmon cold also. It firms up the texture.
Good job, life is a learning process with no end.
Gotta start somewhere
That got my mouth watering. Looks like really good eating. Your fileting skills may be a little rusty, but it looks like you did a good job in the end.
Hopefully you guys can get in on some of the dip netting for the salmon once you have your homestead up and running. Nice catch.
I love your videos I can't wait to see your progress you have to try dip netting fishing
You know how you made the comment that your fish look old compared to Cody's fish that's because your fish is already spawned out after they lay their eggs and they and do their fertilization they start to die which means their meat starts to change color. Wasn't sure if you were aware of that but you guys did pretty good jobs on your filleting my son doesn't even got his fish anymore he just cuts down and fillets in like one easy movement all the way down.. the key to doing it in one slick movement is to have an extremely Sharp fillet knife..
And if you take the carcass and the head and cook it down low and slow and give all those nutrients for your beautiful fur baby
I would suggest wearing a belt with those waders above tour waist . If you fall in they will fill with water and you may not be able to swim to safety! Good luck on your adventures.
Keep up the good work.
Fly me out there so I can help you cut up enough wood to get that cabin done before winter 😅
You'll need to can, smoke stock up for winter
Sunfish and salmon. Almost the same...the both start with s
see if you smoke the rest of the at fish you store without having to keep it cold
Great job!
Good for you for processing some of the fish. Next time you go fishing try for extra and can more. Good luck✌️🇺🇸❤️
Seasonings, ya'll did awesome
Wonderful day! God bless.
And maybe a small boat...
You guys need a net...😉
Could you enable the automatic captions? I am hearing impaired and it would allow me to enjoy your videos much more. Thanks!!
I’m not sure how to make them automatically show up. I’ve looked through settings and can’t find that option but there should be a “cc” box on the video to click to make them appear!
Touch your screen and then look up on the right top of your screen. A “CC” icon will appear. You have to click on it for every video.
Fantastic job, you two! I just canned 36 lbs of tomatoes today. I've never canned salmon, but it looked delicious! 😊 Take care!
Love it
Good job you guys!
Leave your cc on.
Fish looks good.
Well done.
♥️👍🦈
Love you guys!
Good job
just cut steaks
