Firewood - Making sure we have enough to last through winter

  • Do we have enough firewood to make it through winter? A question many have expressed concern about that we decided to address. We are almost halfway through the main part of winter and needed to restock the pile of split wood.
Cody did a great job of hauling log sections up to the house before the snow hit making it possible for us to split up the work load of cutting and splitting enough to get through an entire winter. We are feeling extremely confident there is more than enough wood to get us through the rest of this year and even start us off into next year.

Grab an old sheet of plywood and lay it on top, then the tarp. Way easier to shovel off the snow.

I know it sucks shoveling the snow off of your firewood but maybe next year you'll have a wood shed built to house all the wood in a dry place

My experience sharpening a saw chain tells me 1)you shouldn't need more than 3 strokes per tooth 2) best to keep filing stroke level to floor 3) you need a stump vise or table vise to hold the saw 100% stable....4) Make certain you have the right size file for the saw chain 5) use leather glove when filing 6) Keep file arm close to body for a full, steady, strong stroke - don't try to use all arm motion..............best option is to find a real life logger and have him demonstrate correct technique to you are study RUclips videos.....It isn't complicated or time consuming if you really know what you are doing...you must keep the angles all the same and don't cut any more metal off the tooth than you need to.

Great advice. I logged in Wisconsin the year i got out of highschool. I was taught to set on a log behind chainsaw and lean on it with belly to hold in position while sharpening. There is a guy who has a channel called In The Wood Yard. He uses a dremel type tool with Oregon brand stone bits for saw sharpening. I bought one and it works great. No effort at all and much faster. He has a video with all the details. Its worth watching if you want to make saw sharpening easier and faster. If you try this make sure to get the Oregon brand bits only.

I'm guessing that there are some good videos of the best way to sharpen a chainsaw. It's worth it to have a good sharp saw.

      1. Depending on the cutter, one may need 3 another may need 8. Cut the rakers down even and it doesn’t matter
      2. Keeping a level file how do you meet your corner? Even on a round chain? How do you remove the gullet?
      3. Nope, again. Just keep your angles where they need to be, never seen a table or stump vise in the woods outside of a RUclips video.
      4. Yea. 1 for 6 isn’t bad.
      5. Most people that file a lot have a really cool thing called calloused hands. No sissy, safety Sam gloves needed.
      6. Huh? How do you file chain on a normal 32”-42" bar without reaching here and there
From a real life "logger" been paying my bills since ‘93 driving a saw.

A couple strokes with a hand on both ends of the file usually is all it takes. It seems to have a certian feel when the file does a sharp tooth. I’ve been sharpening for about 55 years.

Winter in Alaska can easily go until the end of April to the first part of May. Then you have a period where you are still burning during the night. When the thaw comes it can get messy so you want to have enough to get through into the warmer weeks. Generally have what you think is enough then double it.

    • @yoop177
      @yoop177 6 месяцев назад

Yeah if it was wood for next year! This is spruce, wet wood it's not dry and what they using now. This Will cause chimney problems that could lead to house fires. This year's woods should of been cut, split and stored where it can dry.
Their wood is wet, didn't get split and is burried in wet snow. It still needs to dry. They started off a year behind already. Wood burning is a year long process always rotating, always wood being dried and always some ready for use.
They may not even have money to go buy some birtch hardwood to burn.
They are counting wet wood currently as having enough for this winter.

Amazing how much work drying your wood for a year saves you. I remember a house I was in that burned 12 cord per year of wet wood (heat and hot water). When I finally got ahead of it and built a proper wood shed with a year's worth of wood that was seasoned for a year I burned 3 cord for the following years. By pulling off the front side and stacking in the back I could then stay ahead of it and keep one or two years' worth of wood curing.

OUCH, learning the hard way about winter in Alaska. Should have had 4-5 cords of firewood cut and split in the summer so it could have dried out. Green, high moisture firewood is the hardest to burn and probably not good for your chimney. Also you may want to build a firewood shed so snow doesn't get on it, helps in drying the wood out. Stay safe and hope you can leave if needed ! Merry Christmas !

This place will be a huge mud mess come spring. Eeeeek! They will learn from that too.
Theve learned some lessons already though. Big one is maintence on equipment and the homestead. When you dont clean and maintain, life gets hard. Im sure we will see no more frozen sawdust on the mill. Im sure they will build a covering now.
Wood storage and supply will now be priority come spring. Tarps just rip and fall apart. Always need enough wood readily accessable and close for when your sick or hurt.
So far its unseasonably warm. The A frame is in very much need of insulation. What they have is not a reality when they hit weeks of below zero. They will burn more wood, and need to keep a super hot wood stove 24/7 to compensate for the heat loss. And without cleanings and maintence (which they seem to lack) to 1chimney and stove that will lead to house fires and even death. Once they have a fire, the dream be done and they be headed back to wisconsin.
Its fun to challange yourself and learn hands on but with a child on the way folks need to be realistic. You both do not have the skills like others living in the bush. Death is real. A small injury to one of you in the bush could kill you all.
Your tree cutting drone video showed alot of danger. Unbelievable amount crawling around the trunk of that tree on knees and a pregnant women sitting on ground by it.
Be realistic with your lack of knoweldge and skills.
Im from many generation of loggers in Midwest. I know death from tree felling, branches punctuing through the face and skull. Being trapped under a tree digging yourself out for a day. Its dangerous. Chains cutting through flesh, broken legs. Dont mock this lifestyle. .
There is no stopping a tree and gravity.
    Best of luck- Diana

I saw hard workers, which it takes up here no matter where you live. Always snow to shovel, even in town. I saw teasing between the two of them and laughter. This may look like a hard life to some, but shoveling, splitting wood, stacking it, is a good cardio workout for winter months. Good fresh air is so important as well. Better than barricade indoors the whole winter and breathing only air inside.

You need to build a shelter and closer to the Cabin so you can have it covered and closer to the cabin so you don't have to do all that shoveling

Covering the wood like that isn’t good. It needs to breathe. Put long poles over it and just cover the top.
