    Had a neighbor that was a Land Rover owner. I learned from him, you start with one, then buy two more for parts to keep the first running. Then you go buy a Honda so you have a way to the parts house.

    • @upscaleshack
      @upscaleshack 4 месяца назад +10

      Funny, but completely untrue. The Landys I've owned have been the most reliable vehicles I've ever had. Far more reliable than Japanese counterparts.

    • @Land_Raver
      @Land_Raver 4 месяца назад +4

      Did he know how to do anything with his hands? You can't be a complete idiot and own a Land Rover long term. Most people only know where to fill up gas and washer fluid. They look at an engine bay like it's trying to read hieroglyphics.

    • @4wd4Life-xs3id

      @@upscaleshack That's a straight up lie. I've been on more trips to then bush than I can count. Several times with my 1990 D110. Eventually I only took my 78 series Troopy.
      Every.Single.Trip something broke on a LR. Every time.
      The entire convoy would need to pull off a number of times just on the way to the bush tracks since someone's landy would be acting up.
      Look mate, I get where you're coming from. I love LRs, but objectively, they are shit. There is a very good reason why Toyota dominated the market is SA and Australia.

    • @4wd4Life-xs3id
      @4wd4Life-xs3id 4 месяца назад +3

      @pablomax9376 Small market vehicles like the troopy are great because you don't need any emissions compliance. But vehicles sold globally do. Toyota invested heavily in Africa and Australia to stifle competition decades ago. People can't find parts as easily for the Rovers, so they use what they can get and usually find the cheapest parts. It's hard to imagine, but there are places outside of Australia and SA where I've never even seen a troop carrier on the road, and getting parts for one would be astronomical. I'm sure if I took one of those things on a trail here, it would break just like in your example with no parts to fix it.

    The black TD5 is a shining example of the Shine it and sell it ethos a lot of dealers have today with older defenders. Modern customers arent as likely to look closely underneath or in detail before buying, trusting in the dealers good name or reputation. We see a lot of first time Defender owners about 2-4 months after they have bought them (we are a garage) and the things we have to show and tell them are quite often devastating. For example a 2001 TD5 110 recently we had to put a whole rear 1/4 chassis on to as the rear end was so rotten it had let the fuel tank go and the whole thing was resting on the rear sway bar! And then the engine fried itself good and proper and a new engine was required....all in the first 3 months of ownership. As we always advise people take someone with you who knows the basics and always get it up on a lift if the seller wont do that or resists taking it to a local shop to do that then just walk away....

      If you go wild camping in SA, people think you're nuts. Not because of the animals, but because there is a reasonably high chance if being car jacked, murdered or raped. This is especially true if you're white.
      After the apartheid ended, they went to the opposite extreme. You're better off and keep driving until you get to Namibia where it's safe to wild camp.
      Also, Namibia is basically the most amazing place you can go.

    Excellent episode! I can’t wait for the next.
    Knowing these vehicles well. I instantly knew after fixing that coolant leak, and not properly bleeding the system that would bite you. It can be a real pain to bleed any TDI landy. Sometimes you get lucky right away.
    Also, for the front swivels. They will leak with gear oil. Always use the one shot grease or 00 grease from a tractor store.
    The transfer case needs to be a GL-4 as it has yellow metals.
    Great choice on using landys. I love them! Tons of character. Generally easy to repair. They make huge adventures like these even more so of an adventure. Doing any trip in something that’s stone cold reliable I find dull. 😂

    when you install the snorkel you are supposed put a rubber bung in the hole in the airbox with a bit of waterproof sikaflex around it. Probably same with the seal on the airbox itself, small amount of sealant so you can still slice it with a razer and give it a twist to get it off for filter changes.

    Td5 has unit injectors designed for fuel with poor lubricatimg properties and so will run on any heavy fuel i.e. paraffin/kerosene/JP8/Jet A1 etc. Oil can creep up the ECU harness from the block so worth getting an extended harness and relocate the ECU in the cabin.

As Andy was asking about the bowl, Rich was ever so subtly pushing the bowl under the engine so Andy couldn't see. That was classic comedy scene there, beautifully done by Rich! Made me laugh out loud for the first time this morning. Yes I missed the post when it first came out, but I try and watch every post within the first couple of hours, unless it comes overnight, in which case it's first thing in the morning! Love the whole video, looks like you guys really had some fun with this. I hope you remain as in love with Landys as I am, still after some 40+ years. Yes the new ones are too plastic and electrically complicated, I've got a mate who works on Landys for a dealer, and some of the horror stories I could tell you, you wouldn't believe. But I still love Series 3's they are so basic, anyone can work on them! Thanks from UK.

    Very pumped to follow up this expedition, I'm a massive Land Rover defender follower, cool as brothers 🍻🍺🍻🍺
    awww oiii the red lever for the master switch, I'm very sure, you can pull this red lever out of the way, just grab it and pull it off is easier,
    if your head lights aren't turning on when you flick the headlights switch on is most likely to be the switch itself as is worn out a very typical LR defender thing,
    I do carry a new one as spare with me all the time now An easy solution is to grab the old switch and join all the cables and join them together and reinstall will get you out of any dark situation I do have one of those made up as well
    NOTE: You most get ignition switches as spares believe me, to defender model specs & a comfy yoga mat to laid down under the rigs makes things more comfortable and you get less covered in dirt and splinters and bugs
    There is a special pro-shaft removing tool for defenders too, makes things easier to remove and re-install too, and make sure to get the wheel bearing nut hub socket side too
    Get yourself a lifesaver jerry can is the best solution to clean water from any water stream wen required the army fellas use this life saver 18 L jerry can too the good it is
    I love the speech you give about going somewhere new and do some trips, you and your crew are my motivation, and inspiration I have done all of Australia is amazing traveling fixing the car add beats the your need and make life more comfortable in the road is very epic cant wait to do tierra del fuego and Africa of course your team is a true inspiration

      I did, they ignored me. SA has a 6 month warranty when you buy it from a dealer. Not worth our time though. They will get bad exposure and hopefully other potential customers will find this video

      This is a huge problem for the majority of defenders in every market not just Africa. Dealers will shine them up, and sell for top dollar.
      If you’re familiar with these, and know where to import parts cheaply (If not in the UK) You can fully rebuild one of these trucks for a reasonable cost. I hate when businesses cut corners and sour peoples experiences

    59:09 that air cleaner cover looked like one of those pliable rubber pinch drains which will pinch off from water pressure if water gets as high as the pinch drain and the snorkel will still work fine. (our tractor has one)
