Yeah man! Really good point. We've got to build the culture, the scenes.

Check out Brutus, a really good band from Belgium, just put it their third album last year and they're making some waves. Smallish as yet but could grow

I am not a very technical drummer. I couldnt pay for a teacher and back in the early 2000's before youtube, well, You could not access information about drumming as easy as today. But within 6 months I got in a band. yes, it was a rough drumming but writing songs with guys, PLAYING WITH OTHER PEOPLE to me is more important than technique. Well, i recorded 3 Cds, played a lot, one of my bands even played TV and MTV, so, I agree 200% with Steve

Same. Started playing in 93 in jr high. Played with a bunch of different guys and bands throughout high school and university. Played in a few solid gigging bands and recorded in my 20s. I had lessons here and there, but all the technical knowledge will not replace the experience of discovering feel and groove and supporting a song.

Some other factors are how record companies and promoters are choosing artists today and also how many niches there are in music today that there weren't 20/30 years ago.

I wish my wife had interest in my various bands from the past. I don’t think she’s ever asked me about them. Anyway, Congrats on the wedding anniversary. Regarding bands, I started relatively late to being in bands but my first band became fairly successful locally and I got to play festivals, out of town shows, live on radio, etc. All that experience came from being onstage and it is essentially how I learned to play. I could already play ok before but being onstage made me learn quick.

I think there's something to this. I feel like we get more and more "well produced" songs that sound great, but nothing that really stands out anymore. Or, because everyone's in their own bubble now, exceptional bands are like specialized into the corners of the algorithm.

I think you are right. It is very difficult to find gigs these days.

Musicians are using that energy learning covers in fear of playing originals to no one.

I think you're onto something with the shift from live gigging to social media tendencies. When you ask about where the big bands are, I think another piece is the lack of broadcast radio. Not that Clearchannel stations were anything awesome, but at least The Edge format was still playing a solid backbone of radio classics in addition to the newer millennial whatever. Then some years ago... poof! That last scrap of commercial modern rock radio went away. I think DFW lost our classic rock a decade before that. I don't even remember how many years ago at this point. Some new bands might be able to go viral on TikTok but that doesn't translate to ticket sales like a radio hit used to pull off.

I think you’re right. I call it the 311 effect. That band is full of great musicians, creative and fun people…but man, do they make crap music when they come together 😂😂😂. They are pre-social media, so maybe not the best example but I get the dope musician/bad music thing.

Not sure how you feel about playing to a backing track, but I just saw Disturbed and Oh Boy. Maybe because the Indy stop was the last show on the tour. Dave's voice was shaky. Older guy, I get it. Just felt like karaoke at times to me. All this to say, new bands aren't getting the experience and the old heads are cutting corners

Honestly the only big 'new' rock band that is popular that I could think of was Ghost- are they even new anymore?
