I love this. Don't get me wrong, I feel there is value to music schools but I don't need to pay anybody to learn transcription, I can (and have) do that myself for free. And I didn't do it to become a better player, I did it just to get better at reading for purposes of composition. I needed to get better at figuring out how to notate odd time signatures and weird rhythms and my job was driving a truck all day so i listened to Rush and Tool songs all day, tried to work them out in my head and then transcribed them when I got home. I learned a ton and not only did it not cost me anything, I technically got PAID to do it, LOL

You are of course 100% correct, jazz went from being “popular” music to “cool” to “you need a college degree and to listened to the entire history before you dare play / listen to this”
If you can’t do it in your bedroom your own way at 15 it’s going to die. Other than manufactured pop shit everything alive is just done by a group of friends
