ATTENTION VIEWERS. Yes I know I said 10,000 hours instead of 10,000 days. I've been working on a solo record called 10,000 Hours for the last 2 years so it's on the mind. Thank you and enjoy the show.
Junkdrummer TV, as in Malcom Gladwell’s 10k hours?
Yep
Junkdrummer TV hey! I don’t know if you found out yet but in case you haven’t those pads are mandala pads and if i’m not mistaken he had a role in creating them. you can find a video of him playing an entire mandala drum set! the snare is his signature snare :) have a great day and thank you for the amazing video!
People are so silly... we know what you meant, why nit-pick on the little shit? We may never know... also, it was NOT obvious that you were going to do this video (at least not obvious to me). I love your channel Steve! Keep up the good work sir, don't let the Trolls rattle you. Ever figure out what electronic pad that was?
His snare drum is a custom drum made by Alan Van Kleef of VK Drums. It’s called the 7emptest snare. He was recommended to Danny by John Tempesta.
So on the little "solo" around the middle of the song the math gets insanely complex.
His right hand is playing the swiss triplets on FIVE different drums, his left is playing quadruplets, his hihat is going in 3s and 4s and his kick drum is keeping the overall beat of the song. (I think)
On top of this, he is also counting the bars, and taking away some of the toms on both (but mostly his right) hands while playing up to the crescendo towards the end of the section, so in his head he is keeping count of 4 different rhythms plus one count. FIVE DIFFERENT COUNTS!
He could play a fifth rhythm, but he'd need to be naked.
Dude ... The visual that last sentence gave me was too much hilarious. You killed me. I'm dead now. Commenting on YT from beyond.
Once you get the feel for the song, it’s a lot easier. The hi hats and the bass drum match each other part of the way through. Then once you get the feel for the triplets (not Swiss triplets) you just move them around the kit where it fits. After that, you just count those triplets down from five sets to two as the guitar gets louder. It’s all about breaking it down :)
He'd play more than 5 but then he'll be exposing himself as an octopus.
@@creepy_assassin6234 naked he could play one more...^^
I was lost with your first paragraph....all that is like physics and calculus. The last sentence made me spit soda from my nose.
You've convinced me that my new favorite hobby is watching professional percussionists get flustered over Danny Carey.
It's become my new favorite hobby as well.
“I want to do anything that well, in my life, for five seconds.” 😂 same
Yesss!!! I never related to anything more
"It's like an illiterate man trying to explain James Joyce to you.."
@@johnwilson1794 lol great analogy
“Oh my god...is he the best drummer in the world? He might be. He might be.”
Amen. What we are seeing here is perfection. A truly great musician at the peak of his powers. Millions of people have watched this video. It’s become an overnight grail for the drummers of the world. One word: genius.
Divinity Mode try being in the audience during this. Nuts & Surreal.
Yeah man ... They're intense live

I was at the new Orleans show. Absolutely spectacular performance. They really gave it their all for our shitty swamp we live in.
Danny carey is the greatest drummer of all time. Like fact
Danny is good but far from the greatest.
If any group of musicians ever deserves to be self-indulgent in what they do, it is Tool. No one is like them, their own existence is self-indulgent.
spoken like someone who has never heard another prog metal band
PREACH
@@Bikonito what other band would you say has the same right to be somewhat self indulgent then? That's a real question, I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything.
@@natesprigg9653 1000% agreed! No argument necessary. But on some real ass shit, what other band is on this (their) level? Sure, plenty of "prog" bands came before them. But Tool is beyond a Progressive Metal/Rock Band. Their music invokes everything we as humans experience daily and for some in a lifetime. They are on a different level than any other band that ever existed. Just listen to what this guy says at the end....and this is what he does professionally
@@natesprigg9653 Liquid Tension Experiment ;)
Drum master, “Even though I have sticks in my hands, there’s nothing I can show you.” Danny- “but I only played a 11/8 and 7/11 and 5/12 simutaneously with two hands. What is so difficult? “
Apparently the song is in 33/16
"I don't even know why I have sticks in my hands, there's nothing here I can show you" Lmao, that's perfect, that's probably about what everyone is thinking watching Danny do his octopus groove.
Calling their time signatures “the devils arithmetic” is probably the most accurate thing I’ve ever heard used to describe tool.
Exactly. Thank you.
normal people: Danny Carey makes me wanna learn how to play drums
this guy: Danny Carey makes me wanna hit the gym
We need a "Danny Carey Reacts to Tool - Pneuma - Danny Cary (Drum Cam)" so we can fill in all the gaps of knowledge of these other reaction videos!
About the only way we could ever know what the fuck he's really doing!
Why ?
@@BaxterThewall I watched a few reaction videos to this same performance and in each one, the reviewer struggled to technically anaylsis everything that was going. Getting the info from the artist himself is likely the only way we will every truly understand what was going on.
Pretty sure that would rip a hole in the fabric of time and space and undo reality.
Please make this comment reach Danny Carey!
"Here comes the math. Here comes the devils arithmetic." I lol'd
"I don't even know why I have sticks in my hands... there's nothing here I can show you." lol The wise among us are nothing but honest. Really enjoyed your review!!
10,000 hours is my favorite album too!😂
Haha. Yeah. My bad. I was in a band called 10000 hours. It's on the brain
😂😂😅
Ya same here. 525,600 minutes comes in close 2nd 😂
Nah 10,000 seconds is way better.
Got it! LOL!
The independent limb dexterity that man has is off the charts, most people cant even rub their belly and pat their head at the same time
And he's sprinting with his left foot, skipping with his right, talking, and chewing gum the whole time.
The pads i believe are called Mandala drums/pads.
I think its old purple pads where he replaced the pads.
Yes and they're working on version 3 which will revolutionize electronic drumming. Also check out their new music device called PIPES which will run the mandala V3
The company is called synesthesia
Yes, the pads are sectioned and programmable to play any digital sample, so he has a higher pitch toward the outer edge of the pad here. Danny uses tabla samples a lot...
Im pretty sure he also helped invent them.
You spoke of his unappreciated grove, but the thing that I think is unappreciated is he ability to write an emotional drum line. We think nothing of emotional guitars or vocals, or key/synths, but I've never heard such an emotive drummer, who is able to load their songs with suspense, or melancholy or fury, - some of the greatest rock bands around have recognizably excellent drummers, but rarely do mainstream listeners say "oh my god" and swell with feeling when the drums kick in...
That's on Danny.
💯👏 great point.!
*100 percent!!*
I've been to Danny's grove. It is nice. Lots of trees. Nice breeze too.
I think a lot of the emotive feel his drumming produces comes from that inter-limb dynamics this video was talking about. Sound engineers create that emotive feel with volume limiters when mixing an album. Here we are seeing a human (human?) Mix his music in real time. Truly amazing in every sense of the word.
Truth. The first thing that came to mind reading this was Wings for Marie 1&2 as prime example.
"Are the rest of us even playing drums!"
The self indulgence comment makes my blood boil. First and foremost, everything that Danny "achieves" here, is encompassed in a great tune. The band as a whole build and build and he is the brick and mortar, but pushing himself. He may be the greatest living musician of my time. Blessed. Great video Junkie!
Greg Payne 100% feel the same lol when he said that I was like wth ? Haha
Gonna have to say.....his bass player saying this album was too "self indulgent" is the textbook definition of missing the forest for the trees. I've heard tool been called a lot of things....but self indulgent, was never one of them. And its art....isnt it ALL self-indulgent? lol
@@christiansmith7254 Yup. Art is self indulgence by definition. Hell, pretty much anything that doesn't involve strict survival is self indulgent.
It's a hackneyed response to a bunch of prog bands over the years, meaningless.
"wait... Let's not make this as amazing... Let me hold back a bit. It could be a biiiiit self indulgent"
Its interesting as hell to hear someone make a remark that the least individually focused rock star filled, rock band is being too self indulgent.
“There is so much advanced Sunday school going on here”....I about lost my coffee! Top 5 reaction video for sure!
My absolute favorite part of the video is after all that he just places the sticks on the kit....ever so softly!
Right?! I always notice that when I watch this video. I absolutely love it.
He should have lit them a cigarette, heh
That's his aftercare after savagely making them his bitch for 12 or so minutes.
Like putting his knife and fork down after dinner
Next Danny Carey reaction video should be where he plays "the pot" with the high school kids.
There is a video of him playing with high school students he is an amazing soul...watch his face the whole time
@@Skabanis He has the biggest smile on his face in that vid... what an artist.
@@braxtonswarroom8297 he truly loves what he does and what he does is better than anyone!
"Is he the best drummer in the world..."
Yes.
Yes he is.
Close but Virgil donati also on God tier
When Neil Peart died his soul merged with Danny's.
He absolutley became so when Neil Peart passed. And that is only out of respect for the drum god that is Neil Peart.... Imho Danny is a better drummer.
He’s so jazz. 100% on point. And that groove... in the pocket. Darling, you never disappoint 😊🙌🏻
Pneuma means breath and I always think of those bits where it's just the wave drum and snare rim as breathing. If you listen the snare gets louder and softer in a breathing rythmn. Nice little touch.
Never noticed that until now.. another great detail!
There are so many of these little innuendos in all their music, it's nearly impossible to find and notice them all, other than repeat listening of course...hahahahah
It actually means the creative force of a person. Vital spirit.
@@jasonjacot5368 In a religious or philosophical context yes but in a literal sense it means breath or air. See pneumonia and pneumatic for other terms derived from pneuma (or pneumon - "lung")
@T Yeah that's one of the best parts of tool songs - you can listen to them a lifetime long and always discover a new detail :D
Soooo interesting ... I’m glad you went into the health/physical aspect. Just the fact that he can do this song (and 15 others like it) back to back...without collapsing- it’s amazing.
It is insane. But realistically especially on this album. He isn't exherting himself at all. He doesn't break a sweat like at all. Thats what makes him that much crazier.
My husband and I were amazed watching him/them at the Modus this year. He's the oldest member of the band, right? He went freaking hard non-stop the whole damn concert. Then we were making jokes because there was an intermission(ish) type thing where he played Chocolate Chip Trip and it was like "Oh do you other guys need to take a break? Sure I'll just keep playing for the crowd while ya'll catch your breath".
This is my first Tool album (I’m 50). I would say I’m not really a music guy, I listen to all kinds but can’t name musicians etc etc. I’ve always loved drummers and drums. This album blew me away. Then I saw this video and I am even more blown away. Thank you for making this and helping explaining some of it. I don’t think it’s indulgent, it seems to be artists looking to express and create at the top of their game. It’s really the perfect song for our times. Slow the bleep down and let your mind rest and wander. Reminded me of when I was 15 and would listen to The Wall or LED Zepplin or Dore Straits and would put on the gigantic headsets and just listen.
Man, those headsets hurt.
The no-look, absolute abuse of that cymbal at 14:37 is one of my favorite bits of the vid. SO much power, control, and body space knowledge!
Same bro. I rewinded that part like 6 times
@@4Realzeaz Right there with you guys, that looked so sick. First couple times I watched it I didn't even realize he wasn't looking, I was just watching his hands.
At least Lars looked bad-ass playing the drums when he was young. Nowadays, Lars has been lazy and uninspired looking when he plays.
fucking love that part dude.
@@Morgan.iiiviix Looked. He has never actually been a bad ass drummer.
"I had to put this record down for a while cause it was fucking with my sleep". LMAO!! So true.
"It's like an illiterate man trying to explain James Joyce to you."
a lot of drummers are as technical, but few can do it and combine that technical brilliance with such dynamics and feeling, subtle and powerful, masterful
"I dont know why i have sticks in my hands, theres nothing here i can show you". Feels like Danny Carey in a nutshell.
The snare he's playing is from the new kit he got from VK drums, and it's a cast bronze drum that replaced his Sonor HLD 590 of similar design. His Mandala pads have 128 strike points arranged in 7 concentric rings that he can program for sound and tone.
What an amazing setup...damn.
Do you have the specs on the kit? I know he was using those kicks Jeff Ocheltree made from melted down Paiste cymbals for a while.
This album grows on you, why it's not my favorite TOOL album, but I definitely like it more now than the first time I listened to it.
So much to unpack in it...but start to finish it’s a journey...
Totally agree. From a bassman perspective I actually kind of disliked it at first. But everytime I listen it to it again, I find more aflnd more stuff that I didn't notice and it really does grow on you.
This was pretty much every Tool fan’s reaction when 10,000 days came out.
Yeah it does, the first time I listen to it I only like the single.
now I listen to the record all the way through like six times and I have like four favorite songs on it 😂😂
Fear Inoculum isn't my favorite album either but Pnuema became my favorite song.
Neil Peart 🙏🏼 RIP & Danny Carrey are the 2 greatest drummers of all time imo.
If you listen to bass line starting at 1:19 the time is grouped in pulses of 3 so 3 3 3 3 2 x 2 then 3 2 so 14/8 x 2 and 5/8 repeated 4x that’s the main theme! It changes slightly as it moves along but that 3 bar cycle is main theme, of the devil’s geometry, lol
Danny has setup his hi-hat in the center like that since 10,000 days (at least) and the snare is a custom VK snare (5mm cast bronze) which they are now selling under the name "Tempest".
His hi-hats has been in the center of his set for years now.
Don't hate brother, Larry Bird is a legend lol.
Austin Burcham did a great video on the polyrhythm in the middle part.
Also, Danny uses Mandala drum pads
My prayers have been heard! Thank you for reacting to this absolutely golden song. You are the best dude reacting to these drum videos I've seen so far. So humble and not acting like these drum songs ain't got shit on you.
I believe his hi-hat is centered so he can use it more easily(either left hand or right) depending on where he is playing on the kit.
A centered hi hat is also handy for a hard striking drummer you don’t have to cross sticks while doing a hard snare strike
He also has remote pedals for his hi-hat on both left and right side. If you look closely he switches to keeping the 4:4 on his hat with his right foot.
SpacePope ... Bill Buford high hat is in the middle too...
He wears jerseys bc he is an avid ball player himself. Was actually offered a basketball scholarship to Kansas.
The Lakers made him his Carey jersey after tool sold out a 2 night show at that arena.
I think I was at the second of those Staples Center shows (if this was for their 10,000 Days tour). It was fun to see Tool, but dear god I've never been in a venue with worse acoustics. One of the simultaneously worst and best shows I've ever been to, lol.
I think he gets a jersey from almost every City he visits that has a pro team... Not sure though.
Every single reaction to this video starts with “what the heck kind of pad is he playing?” 😝
This is the most intelligent reaction video I have ever seen! ;) Than you for that.
Danny Carey and Tool are a great inspiration for me. They are so damn good, as from another planet. I also agree on the humble part. That's another great thing to like about these guys. It is a good thing people with such talent and impact exist.
One thing is certain, and that is that these guys are 1 of 4 kind!
Thank you so much!!
Dany started playing drums when he was 10....so has been mastering his art for almost 50 years. I love how honest you are (as a drum teacher) that this stuff is BEYOND DIFFICULT.
"Are the rest of us even playing drums?! I don't think we are." 😊
We are lucky to be alive to experience this beyond amazing musician. Danny will still be talked about 400 years from now.
FINALLYYYYY BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SO MUCH
The only thing that’s self-indulgent is your friends’ opinions of themselves

Finally... an actual musician taking a look at this ❤️
Bro I have to say, I've scanned through quite a few reaction videos on this video and I always come back to yours. Well done
When i heard this album i was thinking this very same thing. Danny is almost 60 and he is killing it!
If you take care of your body, mind, and spirit then 60 IS just a number!
It's crazy to see everyone's reactions to this video, everyone pauses and gets hypnotized watching this Beast.
Best comment I’ve ever heard on RUclips! “An illiterate man trying to explain James Joyce to you.”. That was absolutely brilliant. Till then you’d given great critique but that kind summed it all up beyond measure 🙏
Haha i forgot I said that. That's a pretty good line. Thanks for watching!!
Definitely remember when this came out and thought "I hope junk does a video on this asap!!!!". Finally!
So only Danny plays the drums, everyone else dabbles.
I could watch drummers fangirl over Danny anytime. And in the meantime i fangirl Danny as well
Damn right brother
The pads are/were a design done with Danny and Simmons. They are both force sensitive and area sensitive. So any sound you can play loudly or softly and apply any affect pitch, choke, sustain, envelope filter, etc, as you play from center to edge
I saw this was up. CLICK.
Same.
My head hurts from watching this.
Well you may have got hate about Lars but it's true. It's not like he was amazing when he was a young man either.
TheBwee123 Lars is the most overrated drummer ever I’ve seen 12 year olds play better then him.
kalle kanin I’m sure Metallica had something to do with it not his income lol definitely not from being a good drummer 🤣🤣
Lars is the VHS drummer: technically inferior, but good enough for his purpose. Trouble is, he's never really cared about drumming as an art form. I don't think he ever plays outside of recording and touring.
Gaius Samuel how can he be over rated when every rates him as a bad drummer?
MetConcerts100 🤣🤣
Those Pads are Mandala from Synesthesia. He worked closely with them while developing them
no, you're exaclty right, the dynamic between both his hands is phenomenal!
He uses seven electronic drum pads around his kit, co-designed by him and Vince DeFranco. These pads are high resolution position and velocity sensing drums called Synesthesia Mandala Drums, and have replaced the various Simmons SDX pads formerly in his setup. He uses a program called Battery, from Native Instruments, on an Apple Mac G5 to manage the samples. Additionally, he uses a Korg Wave Drum, a Roland Handsonic and a few electronic pedals.
Exactly!! Tool's music is very influenced by King Crimson
And Rush
And Zappa
Vinnie Colaiuta (One of the best ever) is one of his influences.
Diego Romero
No !! And according to king crimson ( Robert Fripp ) he said once “ I can detect more Tool influence in King Crimson than I can hear King Crimson in Tool."
Tool is a genre !!
@@triffle69 had the pleasure to listen to KC live in Arena di Verona last year, featuring the triple drummer lineup of Harrison, Mastelotto and Stacey, and the concept is kind of the same: to have the percussive element as a compositional and musical tool instead of "just" keeping time. I think the influence is mutual, early Tool, specially on Lateralus, have a distinct KC vibe, then the influence came back and KC incorporated some Tool vibes in their music. IMHO, Tool is more like a romanic church, build upon precisely crafted, mathematical proportions, while KC is the Sagrada Familia, massive yet haphazardly alien
It so hard to believe, because he’s not sitting there counting..he is playing by feel cause each section tells a story. He’s just narrating in a foreign language. If you listen to him on all of his albums you can hear him building up to each album, and now this is the most intricate one. And they don’t have to kick your ass every second anymore because they’ve already done that. Don’t know why I’m writing this exactly, and that is another reason why Tool doesn’t do interviews per say, because what is said will be misconstrued and that’s a guarantee regardless of the eloquence..Music ultimately is the best language, and Danny is eloquent as fuck. Rudiments. Practice, practice, practice!!!

"If you could touch that, it's like touching the sun" love it brother...
Appreciate the great and honest assessment of this mater class. 👍🏼
Im not a drummer by any stretch. Sometimes you just need to appreciate a master at work.....
6:31 You mean to say Lateralus
I wish I could double like this or something. I love your comments, man. Best reaction video out there on Pneuma. Well done!
"Like an illiterate man trying to explain James Joyce to you..." first time coming across a video of yours, and I liked you from the start, but that line got your sub. Love your perspective man. You're a cool guy.
If he's not the best drummer in the world then who is.....?
Danny Carey... Final answer
maybe some crazy asian we don´t know shit about.
I'd say he's the best. And then Thomas Haake and Mario Duplantier
The better drummers are either dead or retired. John Bonham, Buddy Rich, Carl Palmer, Neil Peart these 4 alone prevent Danny from being the best. He's among the best, but not the best.
Marco Minnemann
If there’s one thing I Learned it’s that he thinks Danny Carey is the best drummer in the world. I definitely do too
In regards to the hi-hat location, Danny said that he had to move it up front out of necessity to make room for the drum pads, and he actually started to like it there
If you love drumming you gotta love Danny man. He's just a drum legend.
I was waiting for this analysis literarly since origial video appeared
I love that he said more than just stuff like "oh my gosh, that timing" Like wtf does that analyze other than ignorance of these reaction channels that the guys obviously don't understand more technical musicianship.
You get me!!
@@JunkdrummerTV I respect that you actually care about things other than views and trying to sound knowledgeable to the ignorant people who have no idea what the difference between 4/4 and 12/8 are hahaha. Keep up the great content!
@@Severen45 why is that ignorant? I know nothing about skateboarding, but doesn't mean I can't express my appreciation out loud when I see a good flip/trick.
@@allisvibration I think he just misspoke... not ignorant overall, but ignorant to the differences. I've been drumming for 30 years and I'm completely ignorant to the difference between 4/4 and 12/8 because I don't read music. I was in the HS marching band but could never read a note. I can cover some crazy shit, but I don't know why I'm doing what I'm doing. Drummers who totally geek on time signatures love to analyze how Danny rocks 11/6 and 11/5 back to back to throw a madmans backdrop into Tool's songs.
Those are mandala pads, he had the company custom design them for him. If i remember correctly when i looked at the specs a few years ago, each pad has multiple trigger points, and each trigger point can be programmed to something different based on how hard he strikes
I think it's 6 mains zones, but 128 in total considering different effects you can add to the main sound of one zone
Yeah, looks like you are right, thats up from the originals i looked at years ago

The main riff is in 7/4 with a 5/8 bar added every other measure. So you could call it 14/8 + 19/8
Great passionate reaction about King Octopuss ! You missed the very little « oops » at 15:18 (quick hesitation)
Frankly I find that oops to make this even more spectacular. To recover the beat that smoothly in a song like this is shockingly impressive.
6:30 "10,000 hours"
I’m not a huge Tool fan but I can watch Danny play this song all day.
As a self-taught drummer who can't read a single bar of sheet music, I might believe that Mr. Carey just feels those sick riffs up through his bones and doesn't even think about time signatures while he's playing. A lot of his accents are synced to Mr. Keenan's vocals, and I think he just works around those brilliantly. Just a thought.
Can you do a reaction of josh eppard from coheed and cambria? He is a very very impressive progressive rock drummer who plays open handed and his techniques are so awesome i think you should really check him out
Big agree! Love Coheed and Josh's style. Very groovy and fits the music so well.
I think he like eats right and exercises a lot
It’s about time someone said he is the GOAT. Too many dance around the fact

From what I understand, his snare is made from melted down and re-cast paiste cymbals, and he cranks his heads down as tight as they can go. He goes through 3 or 4 heads per concert performance. The electronic pads are Synesthesia Mandala Pads that are prototypes that he is developing with the company that designs them. His drum tech is a VERY busy dude.
The drum pads he uses are the Synesthesia Mandala Drum he is also a co-developer of the drum pads as well
great reaction bro and plenty of great comments below for people with great ears and humble appreciation. Danny, you are a uber master
If there was ever someone that mastered their craft, this is that someone. And I guarantee you, if you were to ask him, he would pick apart what he did wrong and be very humble about it.
The snare is a custom VK snare, it's beefy, built like a marching snare. Thick shell, 18kg beast.
He's gone back n forth between side hats and the Pearl remote hats front and center... but settled in with this setup
I know nothing about the drums, but I love reaction videos. I had no idea that drums could be tuned. That blows my mind.
Danny Carey goes full Ultra Instinct with the Dynamic Limb thing you talked about towards the end of the video
Invincible is pretty awesome too. Especially middle and end when, in concert when Adam and Paul turn around and look at Danny during the jam. Really fuckin cool.
Fear is an amazing album and probably my favorite. It shows so much growth in their music. Descending is just breathtaking
I always like the way that if you watch one of his hands ya get on one time, then ya look at the other and it's something very different.
I don't know which I like more, your analysis or your enthusiasm. Been waiting for this. Didn't disappoint. Stay safe!
I've watched a lot of these reactions. I thoroughly enjoyed your honesty and insight while taking us through video. He's definitely a Mt Rushmore drummer!👏🏆
Goddamn! The power and technique in his strokes is amazing! I can never get tired of hearing the magic in every stroke he plays, it’s god level playing all the time!
His use of poly-rhythms and odd time signatures is inspiring!
