Adam Jones (the guitarist) said this was the best accomplishment of his career
It was interesting that Maynard said Adam had written some of these riffs before he was even in the band. He knew he'd use them some day and here they are on 7empest.
“There are riffs on the new album that Adam had before I was even in the band,” he offers. “The last track, ‘7empest’ [pronounced Tempest], the main body of the first chunk of the song is a verse and then a really heavy recurring riff, something I came up with in [the time signature of] 21.
We’d been trying to find [another riff that goes with it], and it ended up being something we’d tried on several albums, with different ideas, and it just never clicked. And then all of a sudden there it is and it works, and it totally is the complete thing that the other riff needed. I think Adam had that riff when we were trying to write for [1996’s] Aenima album. It just kept getting brought up and put on the side.
Adam’s really cool like that. He’s very precious about the ideas we have and he’s always like, ‘Don’t forget about that, we’ll use it one day. You can’t be frivolous about them. You’ve got to respect the fact that they’re really worth something when you first come up with them and you think they’re good, so don’t throw them away.’ So we have this huge catalogue of stuff that we keep on the backburner.”

It's the best album (Guitar wise) in the last 30 years in any genre of music.
Personally I think Justin is so overlooked. He tore some shit up on this album and really holds everything together. Justin layed down some deep dirt and sick riffs from start to end.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it was their third or fourth grammy. Its unfortunate that it was for Best Metal Performance. They should have a genre all to themselves.

The first time I listened to Fear Inoculum on the surface I felt a bit let down, like somehow it didn't meet my expectations after 13 years. It took multiple listens to truly recognize and appreciate how they burned the roof down with this album. So I don't think the average listener does really understand how epic this music is at first glance. Usually songs get old the more you listen to them but this record just keeps getting better. It almost makes me a bit depressed to think we may not see more music from this band or that there will ever be another band like them. Love the reactions, keep em comin!
For sure. Some of their best stuff on this album. Like to decision to omit any vocals from the 2nd half of 'Descending' because, you know, there''s no-one left to sing.
I know what you mean dude. I feel like a dumbass now cuz I should've known better. I've been a Tool fan since 1995 and I KNOW the alien geniuses that these four guys are (and Paul). But I think because I went into it from the early raw, in your face, days that are very nostalgic for me and I've been waiting for so long for the new album that it caught me off guard and I did not fully appreciate it at first. But for me it's been the reaction videos (like this awesome one) that forced me to really sit down and listen to the new songs at another level. And fuckin shit amazeballs!! The more I listen to them the harder it is to come back to this mediocre reality. Thank you Tool for teaching this old fart to never stop Spiraling Out!!!
This album is like a homework assignment and who likes homework?? Until oneday you get on a subject that you enjoy and are intrigued by and keep studying it after the assignment is over.
You know I am die hard tool fan and I always felt that way after each album.... Multiple listens and I am hooked on it. I remember thinking 10,000 days wasn't a sequel to Lateralus but now 10,000 days is my favorite album by them.

Undertow/Opiate is just great 90s rock but I think when Justin joined the band they changed.
When Ænima was released (on my birthday!) I was already a Huge Tool fan trying to get all my friends in to it. But when they heard Ænima it was way easier for me to say “See Mfkers, I told you this band is at another level”. Oh my smug youthful days. Well justified.

I'm a 59-year-old dude. When I first sat down and listened to this in early Sept 2019 I knew about 4 minutes in that this would be special. At about 7 minutes in a strange thing happened: A tear came to my eye and I started blubbering like an eight-year-old, no screaming or anything... At 10 minutes it finally dawned on me what was happening! I thought of a Beatles fan carefully placing the brand new White Album on the turntable in the late 60's, or when I heard the first minute of Zepp's "Achilles Last Stand" in 1976. Whatever reason we are drawn to Metal or any type of music, my emotions were asking me "Is this it?", "Will this be the highest moment of my music listening life?", "Will there be ever be better than this?" "Is it impossible to get better than this?". I don't believe as humans we are ever prepared to not wish for more.

A M Exactly, and Adam Jones is a very different player from David Gilmour, but the playing is focused on emotional, expressive playing and tone rather than mindless shredding. The playing conveys emotion in a similar way a Gilmour would, and I love that.
This whole album is art at the highest level.
The tempest is the culmination of their career. All members clicking at their highest level. The storm is Adam Jones. The band imo is acknowledging his genius skill by hyping up the storm until it rains down on all of us.
This song puts Adam Jones on full display! He goes from that "dirty, grimy" guitar into some super clean riffs. Unbelievable! BUT, don't overlook that bass! So funky!
Let's not forget the great DC and Maynard on vocals. Everyone put in 100%. They killed it.
And then, after you appreciate all that and memorize it, you start hearing Danny more and realize he's just doing his normal ridiculous Danny thing in the back... Its all good, every part.
Adam is so underrated, he has so much skill!!! He makes his guitar make sounds that you would never think a guitar would or should sound. Kinda like Hendrix would do!!!
There is no weak link in this band. Everyone is the best at there position. And maynard's vocals accompanied by vocal delivery and his songwriting is second to none..a genius

I have had friends that have told me they have a hard time, listening to that kind of music because of the way it makes them feel. I get it, it makes you look at yourself in a different way, you may not like what you see in yourself. It brings light to things you may mot be doing right. It might make you change, for the better. When I heard this Album, I was mad because it took so long to come out, then I heard Tempest. I will never doubt Tool as long as I live. This Song is an absolute Masterpiece. The Crowning achievement, of the most creative group of Musicians On the planet.
Tools structures their songs to suck you in and immerse you a audio drug . I swear Maynard has found a way using rhythms to hypnotize you . Best band ever
It's making me emotional... That is tool in a word. Their music reaches that lizard part of your brain where you stop just listening and actually feel the music. Their haunting melodies, dissonant chords and chord progressions, the way Adam Jones continues a theme through a song with minor variations similar to Mozart and other great classical composers. The way Manards voice is not just singing lyrics but is one of the instruments, the time signature changes that cause that off balance feeling riding the wave from quiet and beautiful to loud and sometimes violent crescendo. It's just perfect.

Does the average person listen to TOOL and recognize they’re listening to the forbidden fruit of music?
From my experience, no, not really. You have to sit them down and force them to only concentrate on the song, but if it’s just casually playing in the background, they might even ask to turn it off. I think the polyrhythms throw off the mind when it’s not ready for it.

EVERY time I listen to a Tool song I hear it different or hear something I haven't heard before. The only thing I know about music is I like what I like. For those that are musicians or go deep into the theory side then I can't even imagine what Tool does to them!

Thanks for the reaction! This song was written by the bassist, Justin Chancellor. I think it's in 21 time or something. As always, the three instrumentalists write the music and MJK writes a story that accompanies the music. That's why their music has a much more cinematic feel to it, IMO. Anyway, the more you hear, the more prominent Chancellor's play becomes. Enjoy the rest of your ride!

For years I was absolutely pretentious. I was a teenager listening to tool. I now know that I didn't know how life worked, but one thing i knew back there. Tool was not to be dismissed, it was to be listened to, and be converted to. Everyone that just pasues the radio and listens to this has an awakening before them.

I was lucky enough to see TOOL in 1993. I wasn’t anywhere near ready to understand anything more than they were just awesome performers because I was pretty young. But there’s something so fundamentally true when you guys get your hair blown back and just marvel at how the hell they put it all together. Like, “How THE hell do they put it all together???” It’s total black magic God music. The more I listen, the more mesmerizing and astonishing and improbable it becomes. We are so lucky to get to watch. 🔥💣💯🤘🤘
They played it live for the first time at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Australia in February of this year. It was most triumphant. 😁

This was their magnum opus, it showcased unused riffs and music across their work since 90. It showed their range and Adam finally came alive. Despite you already listening to the top their entire work is not underrated for a second. This was just their answer to fans who waited patiently for over 13 years.
And you can catch the hints of all the old songs and styles in there. It's like a museum of Tool and you get rifled through it in 15:43

Danny can play 4 rhythms at once, one with each arm/leg. The songs are constructed so well, and show off each member's talent and skill

In my “shit tool fans say” video I say, “if you put on good headphones and go into a dark room and listen to the Lateralus album from start to finish you will literally come out a different person”. And it’s so fucking true 😂🤘🏻
What struck me at first about this song is that it reminded me of old school Tool from the Undertow album. At least Maynards voice anyways. I think they tried to incorporate some different sounds from all the albums into this one in order to bring back some of that nostalgia.
I like how you used the word "enchanting" when describing the music. I've always felt they had a tribal sound to them. It's like being a part of a Native American tribal dance.
I have been a fan of Tool for 24 years now but I have only been to 1 Tool concert. It's the only time I went to a concert by myself and I was completely sober. Their light show and sound was so incredible that I literally felt like I was high. I have never had an experience like that occur to me while sober. I’ve been to 15 Tool concerts and I’ve seen them while using a plethora of different substances, but even when I was dead sober (or close to it) their live performance felt like an acid trip; a wicked and yet spiritually gifted acid trip transcending the cosmos and tickling the pineal gland.

Tool Army Here, I have been a TOOL fan for 30 years, I was there when they first came out as a group and was instantly hooked, every TOOL song invokes some kind of feeling that is the magic of this band. Please check out LATERALUS one of my favorites by them, and Thank You for being a class act.
Third Eye, Vicarious, and Right in Two. In that order!
In the middle it sounds like the alarms are going off, warning you of the storm that’s on it’s way!!! This song has so many layers and levels that keep you hanging on to every note!!! You have to put your earphones on, turn out the lights, lay down, close your eyes, and listen to this song to really appreciate it entirely!!!

I've been listening to tool with my sons for the past 17 or 18 years maybe longer but Tempest is there Magnus opus. It's like a combination of everything they've done. The poly rhythms in this R RI diculous. And I love everything from opiate on that they've done and each one leaves me speechless but to end fair inoculum with this !oh my!!!! Brilliant

OK... I never took the time on this new album. Tool is GOAT! Diverse, put together, complex and get down right nasty! Besides that, they can send a message and set a mood. Amazing. Now I know why 7empest won this honor.
