I think this song showcases each of them at different times. The entire first half highlights the lyrics, and not just because of MJK’s singing. The music totally highlights this, especially at the point right before the final verse when Danny just STOPS for about 4-5 secs which to me is just a moment for MJK and Danny to wind up for the final verse before the song moves into the next stage. But you seem to be overlooking that what the song keeps coming back to is Justin Chancellor’s bass line. That to me is what the entire song is based around which is a descending (pun intended) three note melody. These guys work together so well and also manage to switch leads seamlessly to pick up where the other leaves off when changing over.
I see it as a warning to humanity that we are on the brink, it's a call to arms to stir us from sleepwalking to fighting for this planet, for our humanity and for life and to wake up!

The north magnetic pole is going 55kph and picking up speed more rapidly then expected, while the south is heading north at 8 kph. We are similar people my brothers. I often blaze it up, lay in bed in the dark and listen to music, Tool especially and let the music and the lyrics give me a sort of lucid dream effect. Got to respect Maynard for stepping back so the focus is on the musicianship, but I never wanted something more than for him to come back with chorus just one more time.
@@matthewfrost867 around 20:38 in this video I can picture Maynard start doing vocals and end with a scream right before , and a little during, when Adam starts soloing.
@@joesansone1023 Maynard does not scream anymore. His voice is older and he won't do it. He knows his limitations. Theres an interview somewhere where he talks about screaming.
Best song on Fear Inoculum, imho. Epic doesn’t even begin to describe this incredible piece.🤯 I believe Adam won a Grammy for best packaging for 10.000 days. Truly awesome. Be well, boys.👍👍🍺🍺
If you watch the live version, you’ll see what Adam is doing is using the volume going up and down to create the in/out sounds. Basic technique on guitar effect but VERY effective. I believe that Adam uses the same technique for the intro to “Fear Inoculum” but I could be mistaken.
@@rcomaduran He does, they are called 'volume swells' and he uses them all the time. Can hear them on 46&2, among many others. Can do them with volume pedals too, but from the guitar pickups is way more effective imo.
This is the thing about Tool. I waited 13 years for Fear Inoculum. When I bought it at 6am the day it came out, and for the next year, it was all about the songs Fear Inoculum, Pneuma, Invincible, and Tempest. I would have told you those were the best songs on the album. Then I find something in Culling Voices, and I get hooked on that track for months, so I would have ranked that as the best song (besides Pneuma, that has been my fav since day 1), but now over the last month or so Descending has become incredible to me, and now this is probably my 2nd fav song after Pneuma. These songs speak to me equally, at different times. For the longest time I wasn’t crazy about The Grudge or Rosetta Stoned. Now I cant even breathe when I listen to them. I think these songs need to be heard 10-15 times to be fully appreciated. Aenima is my fav album & has been since 96, but the rest have changed over years. I’m rambling, all I know is this band is like no other, and hearing songs 15 years later they still give me goosebumps. God please let them make another album. 🙏🏻
Adam Jones and company are killing it on this track, but the track belongs to Adam. His guitar playing on Descending and 7empest are just exceptional 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
I wish we could go back in time, let y'all enjoy the first 5 albums, then make you wait 6 months to listen to this one...just so you would have an idea of what those 13 years felt like between releases :)
OMG! This just took me back to seeing them live. I was lucky enough to get to see them three times in May 2019 before the album had dropped and this was one of the songs they were playing from the new album. Hearing it that first night I just began to cry. I was so blown away. On the third night I closed my eyes and just listened and I was transported somewhere else as well. Most amazing experience! I seriously cannot wait for y’all to see them live. You will be fully indoctrinated then. There’s no going back after that. Welcome to your new addiction at that point. Seeing them live is not just a concert, it’s a spiritual experience. ❤️✌️❤️
I love the "Do You Hear This" Comment. Do you realize how hard it is for 4 guys to meet, stay friends for years? We are lucky this group of gentlemen met during our time :)
“This song was like 13 minutes.” “No, I was thinking like six.” Time does not pass while you’re listening to TθθL. It is conceivable to achieve immortality by creating/playing a mix wherein there are no gaps between their songs.
"Stir us from our wanton slumber" could not be more appropriate for today. WANTON - (of a cruel or violent action) deliberate and unprovoked. EDIT: They have been playing this as an instrumental for years. There is a YT video out there. Maynard just finally put lyrics to it.
I am also OGT since the first LP...and Descending is my favorite as well. An absolute masterpiece. The music of Tool is my guide through this mortal existence.
The packaging for 10,000 days features a set of stereoscopic 'glasses' for viewing the pairs of images which are called stereograms. Got a grammy award for the packaging, too. The Fear Inoculum CD packaging has a damn LCD screen with a stored video of some pretty heady tool stuff, fractal merkabas and whatnot. Makes me feel like their packaging is a bit of a love note to the age of vinyl where the physical product was a more tangible thing. But yes, I'm that weirdo that still buys CDs. Not sorry.
You're not a weirdo 😂😂 I still buy cds and vinyl too. I grew up with both formats including cassettes. I love being able to hold the physical item in my hands, read the liner notes and the lyrics etc. When Fear came out I was so happy I was able to get the cd. The packaging is so f'n unique and beautiful. This is why Tool is such a phenomenal band. Not only do they focus on the music 100%, but Adam Jones' attention to detail and the creation of the packaging is just as important as well. Looking through my mother's record collection from the 60s and 70s makes me nostalgic for that era. The guys in Tool grew up during the 70s and their music and album art are clear reflections of that. It's a dying art form. I'm so happy Tool are keeping that flame alive. Gotta love these geniuses. So awesome 🤘
Thanks for the reminder of the Grammy and YES the FI packaging is beyond cool. THAT was what I was looking to send them but couldn't find new for less than 120 lol
I still buy cds as well, I have some pretty cool box sets, I have the deluxe FI and the extended book edition, I have the salival dvd box set. I even have the vicarious video and the parabola and schism videos. I would love for tool to release the rest of their discography on vinyl finally
I have been looking forward to this all day and now seeing you opening gifts.... so cool. Yes you have to open it!! What you have in your hands there is a piece of art, proof that something has been lost in modern music with the onset of digital streaming, the art of the Vinyl cover, the art of the Vinyl, and the art of presenting an album through Compact Disc. This blew my mind back 2006....... Hollywood I was waiting for you to say 'Do you hear this?'....... I was waiting for Smokey to declare "Chonky'......... There are some clips on the interweb of the guys sketching this song out in concerts a few years back. Wanton.......... hahahaha thanks for the laugh!
I always create that cinematic epic movie in my head everytime I’m listening to Pneuma, Invincible, Descending or 7empest. Those song are on another level. Also, good job for your show!
Man I love watching live shows of TOOL. I’ll never be able to afford to go to a show being disabled with no income. But my best experience was taking some lsd and watching 1/2 live shows, maybe one of my best trips ever I love this band
Probably my favorite song on the album, and the thing that I find crazy about Tool is that if you don’t count Maynard, they’re basically a trio making all of that noise, same thing with Rush. Danny’s drumming on this song is just incredible, really the whole band was incredible on this song, lol. A lot of people hate this album, but it’s one of my favorites.
There's a Led Zeppelin tribute band called "Get the Led Out" (they're fantastic, btw), and their website used to say something to the effect of "when we groew up our parents went to concerts to listen to Bach and Mozart, but 100 years from now people will do the same with Led Zeppelin." I feel the same way about Tool, and quite frankly the reception of Fear Inoculum album serves as proof that will likely be the case. While it will be next to impossible to create the "perfect playlist" to pay tribute to Tool 100 years from now, I've felt since the first day I heard it that Descending is an obvious no-brainer to become one of the absolute signature works of art from Tool that no one will ever forget.
I have to say that I missed the boat on Fear Inoculum. I liked a few songs but I never got to appreciate them until I experienced this all over again with you two. Seeing you become Tool fans from the beginning made me appreciate their music more, and it made me envious to see you enjoy them like I never did.
Watching y’all’s reaction brings me to tears because it reminds me of my first time understanding this song. Shared experiences are so powerful. I could feel what you guys felt as it unraveled. So many Tool fans get clowned on…until people truly open their ears and hearts to the music. Appreciate you guys taking this journey.

The 3D lenticular cards in the new album and book release is just as Amazing. I'm planning on framing one of my sets. I absolutely love these lyrics from this song. "One drive to stay alive It's elementary Muster every fiber, Mobilize Stay alive!" They perfected their music over the long break between albums. It's like they reached another level of genius enlightenment. Spiral Out guys till next Tool Tuesday!
Danny makes those sounds with electric drum pads called mandala pads. He has a hybrid drum kit where he has 7 of those along with an old korg wavedrum and a roland handsonic. He has them all running into a laptop computer on stage with a program called battery by native instruments. He also has an old school analog synthesizer that he uses for segways between songs and for the sounds during chocolate chip trip. His drum kit is unbelievable. Got to see it up close and personal at the tool music clinic at the agora in Cleveland in the spring of 2018.

The climate is changing and there is nothing we can do about it. It's the magnetic pole reversal and it's due to our planets core. It's possibly could become s continental drift. The north magnetic pole is going 55kph and picking up speed more rapidly then expected, while the south is heading north at 8 kph. The result is our magnetic system protecting us from solar flares and waves opening us up to uv rays and warmer temperatures and our satellites and power grid extremely vulnerable and prone to be wiped out for decades to, more likely, centuries What a way current reflective illustration of our possible forthcoming ending. We were focused on fixing everything outside of the problem, while the whole time the infinite issues is internal, at the core is what ended humanity.
This song is the one that really really got me into TOOL. The sounds, the depth of the music in this is otherworldly. It draws you in like no other.
Buckle up, brother. Their entire catalogue is an epic journey. Enjoy 🤘
We are similar people my brothers. I often blaze it up, lay in bed in the dark and listen to music, Tool especially and let the music and the lyrics give me a sort of lucid dream effect. I let it be the muse to my imagination and let it run wild. Then and only then do I truly feel free. Love you guys, stay solid.
Oh my gosh that was so awesome! The song, the banter, the insight, and of course you two being so tickled by the goofy glasses/10,000 Days CD absolutely made my day! Just wanted to send a little thank you for entertaining us, engaging us & bringing us all together once a week, sometimes more! Beautiful thing you guys have going, proud to be a small part of it, BARR & LARR!! ;)
You’re the one that got them the gift? Very cool. I hope I can meet a TOOL lady some day. Thanks for the helping make more fans
Awesome thing 👍👍👍
Spiral out my friends!! 🌀"Falling isn't flying, floating isn't infinite" ❤🤘
Y'all had me ROLLING with talking about "wonton" (chinese dumpling) instead of "wanton" (deliberate/unprovoked). Hahaha, love you guys.
I commented the same thing as you at the same time hahahahaha i was dying lol so innocent hahaha
I was Dying!!!!! LOL!!! I love these guys!!! Easily my favorite reactors.
I haven’t laughed that hard in so long!! I love them.
Oooppppsss sorry
@@Hollywood6IX no apologies, it was awesome!
Bros this is gonna affect you way more than the live version.
For real
💯agreed
Unless you're lucky enough to see it live and in person (I've been fortunate enough to see them play it twice)...
Ditto
@@JL-1123 Was lucky enough to hear it twice in 1 day! once at soundcheck and then again that night! What a epic fucking day that was!
Got to respect Maynard for stepping back so the focus is on the musicianship, but I never wanted something more than for him to come back with chorus just one more time.
I agree. I enjoy the space but there were a lot of points on this record that could’ve used some vocals
@@JMV005 I know that. Woulda fit nicely there though.
@@joesansone1023 I thought the same thing in that part. The track almost feels incomplete sometimes
Best song on Fear Inoculum, imho. Epic doesn’t even begin to describe this incredible piece.🤯 I believe Adam won a Grammy for best packaging for 10.000 days. Truly awesome. Be well, boys.👍👍🍺🍺
"How does he make those sounds?"...Alien Technology, no other reason makes sense...😉
Element 115 ha
Agreed
Maynard forgot his pen...but Adam brought his 👽
If you watch the live version, you’ll see what Adam is doing is using the volume going up and down to create the in/out sounds.
My TOOL TUESDAY just got a whole lot better 🙏 Hollywood6ix is gonna freaking trip! See y’all at the TOOLGATING 🤘🤘
See you then Unc
Kick ass! Such an epic song!
Yes, chills once again. Adam's playing really shines here. Some of his best fret action.
So jealous
Sound the dread alarm through our primal body....
OMG yes I can't wait for this, I play this song every morning at work at 4am lol. Got some of my coworkers loving Tool now
About time this song got more reaction attention. It's a masterpiece.
Hey there... this is Uncle Mark, and I approve this reaction! Lol. ✌✌
My last two shows are Tool Nov 2019 and Tool Jan 2020. Watching them play Descending live is a memorable life event. This song is a banger 🔥
It's really ominous how the lyrics are a plea for humanity to not destroy itself and then the vocals end halfway through the song.
I love the "Do You Hear This" Comment. Do you realize how hard it is for 4 guys to meet, stay friends for years? We are lucky this group of gentlemen met during our time :)
“This song was like 13 minutes.”
“No, I was thinking like six.”
Time does not pass while you’re listening to TθθL. It is conceivable to achieve immortality by creating/playing a mix wherein there are no gaps between their songs.
One of my favorites
"Stir us from our wanton slumber" could not be more appropriate for today.
WANTON - (of a cruel or violent action) deliberate and unprovoked.
EDIT: They have been playing this as an instrumental for years. There is a YT video out there. Maynard just finally put lyrics to it.
Think they intro’d the instrumental shortened version of descending in 2012 so that was cooking for a long time
I'm an OG Tool fan and Descending is my Favorite!!!!
I am also OGT since the first LP...and Descending is my favorite as well. An absolute masterpiece. The music of Tool is my guide through this mortal existence.
finally someone appreciates my fave from the newest album
Absolutely.... such an amazing song
@@rubaidaallen2764 completely agree with your lovely sentiments.

Glad you make studio version too on this one ....!
I just turned on RUclips and seen I was 17 minutes late joining the party! LOVE TOOL TUESDAYS!!! TOOL is the greatest band on earth!!!
I love how you say Adam is a beast, and the whole album is Danny flexing nuts on every drummer ever!
This song has a lot of chawnkiness. 🤘
Probably my favorite song on the album, and the thing that I find crazy about Tool is that if you don’t count Maynard, they’re basically a trio making all of that noise, same thing with Rush. Danny’s drumming on this song is just incredible, really the whole band was incredible on this song, lol. A lot of people hate this album, but it’s one of my favorites.
people who hate on this album know nothing,it is their mangum opus
"Bad video..."??? Uh, NO, watching y'all open that EPIC gift made me happier than I have been in a VERY long time...
Love this song it’s my favorite song off FI!! The last 3 minutes is incredible!!!
Best song on the album. Take me away Calgon.
😂😂😂 Calgon. Omg blast from the past. I remember that commercial. You have to be a certain age 😉
That 10k Days album artwork/packaging won a Grammy back in the day!!
hearing the GONG live, that kicks off the last solo, is as close to a transcendental experience I've ever had.
Without a doubt. First time I heard this song was live in May, 2019. The gong took me from goosebumps to full-blown toolgasm. Amazing.
I"Sat by the Ocean"and analyzed the music.😏Me and my sister made a night of it. Listening to the entire Album. On my 3,500 watt stereo system. It was An amazing night. Lea sent you both a great gift. The 3D lenticular cards in the new album and book release is just as Amazing. I'm planning on framing one of my sets. I absolutely love these lyrics from this song. "One drive to stay alive It's elementary
Muster every fiber,
Mobilize Stay alive!" They perfected their music over the long break between albums. It's like they reached another level of genius enlightenment. Spiral Out guys till next Tool Tuesday!
Love this
@@bettyrocker_Lia 😉And I love you're superior gift giving.😊
The waves at the beginning were recorded live at Danny’s beach house
Wow really
@@Hollywood6IX yeah in Malibu if I recall correctly
Edit: he mentioned it briefly in a live stream
Danny makes those sounds with electric drum pads called mandala pads. He has a hybrid drum kit where he has 7 of those along with an old korg wavedrum and a roland handsonic. He has them all running into a laptop computer on stage with a program called battery by native instruments. He also has an old school analog synthesizer that he uses for segways between songs and for the sounds during chocolate chip trip. His drum kit is unbelievable. Got to see it up close and personal at the tool music clinic at the agora in Cleveland in the spring of 2018.
Wow you went to that music clinic that’s so cool bro, I’m endlessly envious. Didn’t they play a couple songs instrumental aswell?
@@benbhogal4551 ya it was amazing. They did more than a couple. They played 6. The grudge, aenima, rosetta stoned, eulogy, jambi, and stinkfist. They answered a ton of questions and told a bunch of stories. There was only maybe 100 people there. Very intimate. They did a meet and greet after. It was definitely a worth while experience.
@@schism47 damn bro you lived one of my dreams, that all sounds incredible! Hearing all those great songs instrumental is truly a once in a life time opportunity I would’ve gone but I live in the UK and couldn’t afford it at the time
@@benbhogal4551 well Adam told some of us at the meet and greet that those weren't gonna be the only music clinics they were gonna do. So hopefully they do more. Hopefully they do some in europe for you guys. I couldn't pass it up man. I'm from Cleveland and I was in a band at the time that played at the agora all the time. To be able to see my favorite band at my favorite place to play was truly once in a lifetime. I'm truly glad the stars aligned that way. I hope you get to experience it too man.
Adam was making that song for years. It is a masterpiece.
Yo! Goosepumps are real and live... GOD! I waited 14 years to whatch them live in Portugal. Was the best day of my LIFE! GREETINGS FROM PORTUGAL! Huge FAN HERE
Adam is such a beast on this song man, guy doesn't get the respect as a musician that he should
My personal favorite on this album. I know most would say Pneuma or 7empesr but Descending to me is a Masterpiece and top 5 TOOL song.
Arguably one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Of ANY genre.
Been waiting on studio version!!! Thank you 🤘🤘
I love your illustration about sinking deeper and deeper. Reminds me of the movie the abyss. Sinking, dying then lights and beauty from deep within the depth and darkness
I love that final solo. Adam is telling secrets, if you're listening...
This is slowly becoming my fav on the new album.
does anyone else remember this song from before it had lyrics when they'd play it live?
You’ll love it! Don’t forget about Pneuma studio version too!!! 🌀🌀🌀
Am I the only one who feels like trip sitting when watching good Tool reactions? Lol...
Amazing song, amazing reaction. LOVE TOOL
This song made me feel like I was descending into death while on an acid trip...was really intense and makes it hard to listen to now 😕
I’m really sorry to hear that man.
I’m sure there’s something that you can learn from that experience regardless. On the surface I would imagine it was just really heavy stimulation.
I have overcome this issue now. Respect the molecules 🤘👽🤘
I’ve been listening to this one a lot lately. It gets me ready for the day. Best trip you can take when you can’t go anywhere!
Everytime i hear this song which is one of my favs from them i feel like I'm DESCENDING down into the Mariana Trench so deep past the white electric fish until i get to see 4 👽👽👽👽 which are Tool playing down there 😂 GOOSEBUMPS!
Been a Tool head since 92. Heard every song so many times, seen em from so many angles, heard the interviews. Take some time, make it 4:20, and put on some Tool. Some of us are deep thinkers. Others just enjoy the music. I am both.
Descending, I don’t see as falling. A bird or a plane must descend in order to land. Descending brings me back to grounded good and solid, so to speak. Trash Talkers
I saw this live at Welcome to Rockville the first time it was performed. We were surrounded by TOOL fans from all over the world who had traveled to hear the first new music in 13 years. Ireland, Poland, Germany, Australia, Puerto Rico. It was amazing. We were all in awe.
Experiencing the 10000 Days stereoscopic art is amazing!!
All Tool fans have that album

Adams waling toward the end actually made me cry once. Why? Why does Tool's music have such an amazing impact? They're just amazing and most legit of anyone. Period.
