Wow! This video got more views in a day than most of my videos combined have ever gotten! Things I learned from the comments:
    - The roll at the beginning is in time!
    - Looks like Danny doesn't play to a click.
    - The verses are in 33/8, although not everyone seems to agree.
    - Some people really liked my explanations/breakdown/energy/etc. Thanks a lot for that!
    - The Tool Army is strong!
    - Danny Carey is 58!!!
Thanks for all the views and comments, guys! This is not my usual type of video, but I might make more in the future!

The verse progression is definitely in 33/8.
I've seen people mention different ways of counting it, but I personally feel it as a six-bar phrase, kind of broken into two parts: 6, 6, 5--6, 5, 5 (eighth notes).
What I think gives people different feels is the first note when the verse progression starts (timestamps for the original video: 1:27, 1:44); I've seen some people say they hear that as the downbeat in a bar of 2/4 or something, but I think of it as being on count 4 of the last bar in the phrase (which would be 5/8).

I think you did a great job displaying a drummers point of view on one of the most impressive and talented drummers on this planet. Haters will hate, criers will cry, reactions are a "personal view" without pandering and that is exactly what you have done. I thank you brother, I have watched this video a dozen times and it never gets old. Great job and keep them coming.

Don't worry about the haters man, cool vid. I'll add one more thing about the bridge that I find incredible. When he eventually goes into the swiss army triplet sticking pattern that you identified, he's playing them in the form of 16th notes (rather than triplets) and keeping the 4/4 quarter note on his kick and hi-hat. The best way to count that as a drummer is in 3/4 in my opinion, because then you're sticking pattern and the kick drum seem to line up every measure, rather than changing and taking 4 measures to cycle back to the beginning. Hard part is trying to count in 3, while the rest of the band is playing in 4 (or one measure of 3 and one of 5 is how I feel it). Danny's playing is always mind boggling to me.

That doesn’t mean they never use them (I’ve definitely heard one on a making of for one studio track). For this song, they might need to since the guitar and bass both use a fixed delay. But they also might not need it since the guitar or bass always starts off setting the tempo before he comes in, so maybe not. (At least there are no sequenced synth sounds or anything to sync up to, the synth stuff later is played live by Adam.) I’m going to guess not unless they really need to sync to something automatic.

They are playing in 33! Easiest way to count it for me is to think of the first bass note as the pickup note, then count 7 twice, and then 5 double time. That means two rounds of 14 to get 28, plus the 5 at the end for 33. Easy, right? Lol.

This song, objectively is one of the best I have ever heard. A true masterpiece start to finish. I can't even imagine what the writing room looks like when composing something like this. This guy and Key of Geebz are definitely best for this. This guy gives a great drum breakdown, and Geebz gives a much more generalized overview of each instrument but also breaks down how the meters are progressing within the time signature of the song. Both have brought so much clarity to the beat and flow of this song.
Geebz in particular unlocks the hack to head banging to this song. Lol it has a steady driving tempo, just a lot of meter changes within it. But the tempo NEVER changes through the whole thing. It’s what Danny locks into with the hi-hat during his solo section. You’ll notice upon another listen that that persists through every section of the song.

Yeah I like to think of the part at 6:45 as being in 3/4 and just being 4 groups of 3 over 3 beats of 16th notes. At the start he just does the first 2 notes of each group of three with the RH. Then he fills in the groups of three with the LH. RRL etc. Then he moved the RH around the Toms. Then he starts moving the left hand around and starts doing the Swiss triplet pattern. At the at end he lines up with the band by adding a 2/4 measure with four 8th notes on the snare drum. He also keeps the beat with his feet the whole time. Interesting is when you can hear his pattern come closer and closer to lining up with the rest of the band. Still working out how they start getting in sync. I think the band gradually starts to come back together around 8:38 when He starts moving down the drums with his RH in more of a recognizable pattern. I’m not sure if that’s a signal to the rest of the band to start to come back together or what.

I love this Band. So I've watched a LOT of reaction videos on them and especially this song. You have done an awesome reaction. You know your drums and music. Of the many many many I've seen.
    I gotta say top 5.
    Good job.

I rarely comment on reaction channels, most of them seem pretentious to me. But i must say i loved this format. You are clearly enjoying what you are watching. Plus there's so many new things I learnt from this single video. You earned a sub. Cheers!

Otherworldly... Carey is easily one of the best ever percussionists. Right there easily with Neil Peart R.I.P. God rest his soul. Tool is incredibly TRIBAL. At times I lose complete control of myself like I'm in another state of mind. They are one of the few Super Bands that come once a millennium.

Great reaction/dissection bro! I would highly recommend the Drum Cam of Danny Carey performing Triad, the audio and cam are knowhere near this quality but it is from 2002, it is mind blowing seeing him in his physical prime! The version on his website DannyCarey.org is slightly better than the one on RUclips

At 1:19 when bass comes in with drum groove the pulses are 3 3 3 3 2 x2 then 3 2 so 14/8 x2 and 5/8 this cycles 4 times then when vocals start it’s a bar of 14/8 and 2 bars of 11/8 followed by 14/8 x2 it is really based on pulses of 3 and 2, felt as 8th notes, 123 1 2 etc

Obviously Danny Carey is one of the greatest drummers of all time and one of my favorites, but I think it's interesting that no one pointed out the slight error/loss of beat at about 11:22. We're all human of course. I've lost time live too, and he recovered quickly.

One thing I don't know if many people have picked up on is that his hi-hat moves opposite to the way a normal one does. Or maybe there's a delay if the hi-hat is on a cable when he is doing the Swiss roll.

Great analysis. Learned a lot! Thanks. In return, if you haven't seen this video, it is an interview a few years back with Danny Carey and it shows you the technology behind his drum kit (the Ferrari of drum kits). I had no idea most of this stuff even existed.
