    I've seen DT live three times in the Mangini era, and he is EASILY the tightest member in the band live. The most insane drum parts of the most insane DT songs are absolute child's play for him. I've lost count of how many times he was literally laughing while playing ridiculous parts with complete ease. I've found myself fixated on him and ignoring the other members during songs, which in a band like DT is no easy task. I have no doubt he could play an entire concert one-handed and if you closed your eyes you wouldn't even know it. The man is a god amongst mortals.

      I totally agree. I was crushed when I found out Portnoy was leaving Dream Theater, but when the tryouts started, and I already knew a little about Mangini, and I thought, what if he could be the next drummer. And, aside from all the initial criticism, he has proven to be a worthy successor to the drum throne. I wish Portnoy all the best in his endeavors, but Dream Theater has moved on.

      I guess there was no escaping being judged after he joined one of the most beloved prog bands in the world, having to fill the shoes of one of progressive metal's pioneering drummers. It was like when Josh Clinghoffer joined Red Hot Chilli Peppers having to fill John Frusciante's shoes, one of music's greatest guitarists. It doesn't matter how great he is, he will be judged because he is a different human being and a different musician, who said he doesn't want to be Portnoy or copy him. You can't blame him either; he's a musician and an artist and a life of trying to emulate someone else before you sounds incredibly boring and unreasonable.

      @@caelmcleish1212 I don't even necessarily agree with that. Portnoy is more than capable of playing those techniques, but he understands what actually sounds better. It's like, there are many drummers who practice technique and do all sorts of hard and weird stuff, but it sounds like this. You could play a super technical time signature switching groove that does all this crazy stuff, but it can still sound like shit. I hate to say it, but Virgil Donati is a perfect example; excellent technique, but he severely lacks taste in what actually comes out sounding good. Portnoy understood this balance of technique and sounding good.

    I first saw Mike back in 1994 with Extreme at Donnington Rock Festival (known now as Download I believe) and his drum solo was mind blowing. I had not heard anyone play polyrhythms, double bass, one handed rolls etc etc with that POWER and precision in all my young years. I keep an eye on his progress all the way though to Steve Vai's band and so forth to now finding the perfect band to play his phenomenal skills on. And I dare say, even in that band, he's at best being playing at half capacity. Notice how he doesn't SLAM his drums. So many of these prog metal drummers are BEATING SHIT out of their drums, he doesn't need to do that, I knows about efficiency of motion and control. What's more, he comes of as a genuinely lovely person. Mike is my hero!

    From engineering standpoint, the higher the cymbals the better. Less bleed to deal with in the snare and tom mics.

  • @2ndmerqury5
    @2ndmerqury5 3 года назад

    Having cymbals so far above is great for a sound engineer reducing restrictive bleed, especially in a in-ear band like this.

    Mike has stated the reason he plays so high is to isolate his cymbals from the rest of the kit, as well as seeing people for a change

    Pat, I've watched a fair number of 'reaction' clips on RUclips and I have to say, yours is fantastic. In the true spirit of a reaction, we're seeing you, an actual musician, give honest and interesting appraisal on another musician. I can tell that you're not just artificially looking for something to watch in order to justify an upload, you're adding value to the rest of us. I'm a guitarist, not a drummer and yet the fact that I've come away from this video of yours knowing more and being entertained is fantastic.

      Yeah, I was initially devastated when I learned that Portnoy had quit DT, but I quickly absorbed what Mangini brought to the band. I still love Portnoy, and as a drummer, learned tons of technique from him. Now, I whole-heartedly embrace Mangini and what he has brought to DT, and I am learning new drumming ideas as well.

    Just to help if you're still trying to play the fast hand parts; he does not play just with his fingers. He uses and focuses on the larger muscle groups and says any movement in his fingers is a "derivative motion" from the larger muscle groups. Maybe you'd find it easier if you played around with different techniques. Great video, man :)

      Pat Flanigan I think you know this but Labrie’s voice is really iffy live now a days. Obviously he is not as good as he used to be but still they put on a great show. It’s really cool seeing them play that stuff live. Also a great video if you want to watch is called technical difficulty Paralyzed St Paul 2019. Rudess and Mangini just improvise for a bit which was really cool to see

    4:07 Completely Wrong. Mangini plays the cymbals high because it's an isolation technique. It's for recording and for avoid interferences/ filtrations by other sounds of the drums.

    The only reason why people trash Mangini it's because of the absurd comparison with Portnoy instead of appreciating both! Mangini is a beast, he is a fantastic drummer, he seems such a nice guy and the chemistry with the band worked. That's all I needed as a fan of DT.

    • @tantrus99
      @tantrus99 4 года назад +1

      I agree, I argued with people on forums for months, trying to justify Mangini over Portnoy, and believe me, I was a HARDCORE Portnoy fan, I have his drumming video courses, and honestly learned a lot of drumming techniques from him, and grateful for it. But times change, bands move on, and Mangini is the king on the drum throne now.

He is a very active person I believe when the atmosphere in the Audience is positive.
