    He is such a musical monster. He and the band litterally changed the face of music. Im convinced they single handedly saved prog as a genre.

    I think what is underrated about his playing, is how comfortable he always makes the groove feel, it is natural no matter the time sig.

      He knows where the pocket is. He feels which beats need to lag and which ones need to rush. I’m not a drummer, but I can feel his “feel”

      This is why I always prefer the portnoy era over magini. Not to say who’s better, i just feel more natural with portnoy’s flow

    So many things to praise about Mike's drumming, such a sharp sound and sharp timing, never boring or overbearing, always tasty and adding something to the game. By far my favorite drummer too, just an average guitarist's opinion :) good video

    Dream Theater are one of a kind. I only saw them Live once in 2002, but I'm a major fan. My 2nd favorite group behind VH. Portnoy is amazing.

    I wish I could understand how people figure out time signatures! 4/4 and 5/4 are easy, but after that i have no idea lol Great reaction by the way!

      Great idea for a future video! When you’ve heard them so much, they become easy to figure out, just like 4/4 is. But if you want a good starting point to train your ears to odd time signatures, listen to that song again, start by counting in 4/4, and if it doesn’t feel right (like if the measure restarted on an up-beat), count twice as fast and take note of the measure restarts. If it’s on the 7, chances are you’re in 7/8! If it goes longer, it might be in 9/8 or 11/8!

      @@PatFlanigan Thanks for the tip, i'm going to try that out, and i'd love to see a video like that!

    • @jimpemberton
      @jimpemberton Год назад

      The odd time signatures typically have to be understood by breaking them down into primary beats with subdivisions. For example, 5/8 time might have primary beats on 1 and 4 with 2, 3, and 5 being subdivisions of those beats. So you have the first beat subdivided into 3 and the second beat subdivided into 2. You need to keep the subdivisions going in your head so you keep the time consistent and *feel* the primary beats for laying out your groove. You can see Portnoy *feel* the primary beats in the way he bobs his head. Sometimes it's subtle, sometimes it's very obvious. Sometimes it's front to back, sometimes it's to the side. If he had to play with a neck brace, he might not be able to play well.

    Hey man, just something I noted - the note values in the beginning part aren't triplets, but rather 16th notes where the accents are on every 3rd 16th :)
    Awesome song, and it seems to be one of their most popular, up there with Pull Me Under.

    That's the Albino Monster..the drumkit he used to record Octavarium. And the hi-hat he has to his right in this video is actually his main hi-hat on the right part of the monster drumkit, and you we're right, the other part of this kit is a resemblance of John Bonham's kit

    I would love it if you would add Jason Rullo to your list of requests. He's the drummer for Symphony X and he's not as well known as I feel he should. There's a live video of him called "Jason Rullo - Symphony X - Iconoclast - Midland Theater" on the channel SickDrummerMagazine. I just love his style and musical choices and how easy he makes it look.

    Not sure if there are any drum videos out there, but would loooove to see you react to Dredg drummer Dino Campanella. Dude plays with crazy power (and plays keyboard at the same time on occasion).

    You could count the intro section in 4, but you're dumbing it down. Which is honestly just silly. count it in it's correct measures instead - so it's easier to pay attention to and understand
