Fun fact, Mike Portnoy actually said they wrote the song and structured it like as if you were having a panic attack through the song. He said they wanted the song to portray the feeling of going through the stages of having a panic attack, I say mission accomplished

    Ayo less goo!!!!
Panic Attack was one of DTs biggest hits outside of Pull Me Under! No chart spots or anything, it wasn't even a single either, but it still became one of the bands best known songs, partly due to Rock Band 2 but also because of the hype of the band at this time! They were truly one of the most cherished Metal bands between 1999 and 2009!
Octavarium was a masterful work that crafted a theme of Musical Keys with each song being in a different key and going up the keyboard, beginning and ending in the same key. Panic Attack is in C, the next track is in D, and that little spacey synth outro you heard is technically a Negative track, which is that blank space of like 1-2 seconds on most CDs that separates the songs. As far as I know, Dream Theater is one of the only bands to utilise those tracks by placing audio transitions between them, some about 15 seconds, others near a minute.
The title track, Octavarium, is arguably the band's greatest song and one of the greatest Progressive Rock epics ever! It's 24 minutes exactly, which is why I haven't suggested it yet as a reaction, but it's one I will one day get to with my suggestions! Panic Attack, though, is a Proggy Speed Metal masterpiece with some intense drumming, a KILLER bass riff, and duelin solos between Guitar and Keyboards! Again, one of the band's most iconic songs! Glad you guys liked it!!!!

John Petrucci (guitar) of Dream Theater admitted that it was easier for the band to write complicated, epic pieces of music like 'Panic attack' ... 'The glass prison' ... 'Breaking all illusions'... 'Metropolis Pt. 1'... because it enabled the members to 'let loose' (so to speak) and add pieces of music to a certain track during rehearsals.
Writing a 4-to-6 minute song is apparently more challenging as Petrucci was quoted:
"The challenge is to try to write and keep the style that we write in without straying from the thing that makes us unique. And to try to do that within a four- or five- or six-minute mark, it's hard to do."
Still, Dream Theater have had some stellar concise songs - 'Wither' ... 'Another day' ... 'Caught in a web' ... 'Forsaken' ... 'The Looking glass'...
