You guys mentioned the King Crimson influence.....the irony is that Tony Levin from King Crimson played with Jordan, Mike, and Petrucci in Liquid Tension Experiment... In which that one section with the "loony tunes" part was one of the songs on their first LTE album...
Also...Metropolis Pt 1. Is on the album Images and Words which was a few albums before Metropolis Pt 2....

There's a version of this where the camera is only on Mike Portnoy, there was a part earlier where he tried to toss his sticks but he fails to catch it but he just continued on like nothing happened. So seeing him toss it again later and actually catching it is amazing.

He also messes up a little cymbal part but it’s barely noticeable. They know this music, they made this music so SOMETHING is bound to happen but all in all it’s an absolute masterpiece retrospective

On the dvd there's a camera angle on each musician (and one on the drummer) to choose from. Good stuff.

Dream Theater has been around since 88. Only 3 of the founding memebers went to Berjlkley. Petrucci, Myung the bassist and Portnoy. All 3 are from Long Island and they are very much a Long Island band. Most if not all of them live on Long Island. Myung and Petrucci were HS buddies. They first met Portnoy, who grew up about 90 minutes west of them on Long Island at Berkely. The singer Lebrie, joined them after the first album. Rudess is there 3rd keyboardist and joined them around 98. He went to Juliard. They are still very much active and one of their songs from their last album won agrammy about 3 years ago. Portnoy just announced he has rejoined them this year. He left about 2010.

Holy Cow-my ears couldn’t keep up with what I was hearing!!! This is amazing. So, if they did this 20 years ago, could they do it today? I will listen to this again because I found it interesting and energetic. And the drummer-how many toms do you need? Wow, again I wouldn’t know which one to hit next! Great reaction today. You should check out at least a couple more to see whether or not you want to pursue this music. That is what I do on your channel! Later 🎶 Cyd

I saw them playing the whole "Dance of Eternity" (most of this medley is from that song) and other incredible ones such as "Fatal Tragedy" and "Beyond This Life" and "Finally Free" from the same album (Metropolis part 2: Scenes From a Memory). It was a tour they did in 2019/2020 and they are as good and incredible as back then. The best musicians to ever exist ❤

Trust me they’re enjoying themselves they eat this stuff for dinner. This is really just jamming and having fun and putting on a show. They’re all pretty relaxed…they’ve already written this music and they obviously practiced this ahead of time. This is just fun for them, the only stress would be just memorizing the order and changes. The playing is easy enough for them though. But this was also a BIG show for them to perform plus it’s being shot for a DVD as well

Scenes from a memory PT2 is the greatest album. You literally don't need anything for your musical education except this.
Vocals in DT were always shit. Sorry me, but it's the one thing that have not made this band the best band ever. Pay attention to musicians too. Speed is nothing for them - they use it as a tool and whole DT music is....very musical!. Lot's of nuances and intonations, dynamics and such. Very very very musical band.

LaBrie can be a mixed bag, some stuff he's great in, and other times his voice is just not suited for the music. The earlier stuff of Dream Theater has the best of Labrie. The later stuff, it gets meh, but he still has some that go ok with the music.
Scenes from a Memory is definitely their pinnacle album and it's Rudess's first album with DT.

Yes, you DEFINITELY should check Metropolis part 2: Scenes From a Memory from front to back. Although you should maybe release the songs separate (maybe two per video). It tends to do really low in view numbers when it's a whole video checking the whole album.

Regarding that fish on the side of the keys, as far as I remember, some Japanese fan gave this sticker (or magnet) to one of the band members (Mike Portnoy, I think), and then apparently he handed it to Rudess and Jordan attached it to his keyboard before the show just for fun. That's it. So the fish doesn't have any special meaning, but it has become quite famous among DT fans.

Metropolis pt 1 is a song from Images and Words (it's regarded as the song that created the Prog Metal genre itself!). A lot of these parts were from that and from Dance of Eternity, on Metropolis pt 2, considered the most difficult song ever in the whole genre. And YES, listen metropolis pt 2 fullllly! Reading the lyrics. Its a journey, basically a movie itself. Your wife will love it too

I meant to comment on the Jordan reaction, but got sidetracked. I'm so glad you were able to listen to this monumental Band, that's been around since 1985. So where do you go from here? Obviously your friend was quite familiar with DT. He would probably be your best guide. Here's some links to some of my favs. I've listened to DT since 1995, and have never strayed. It's hard to get away from perfection. Where do you go?. Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons (Live at New York, 2000) (UHD 4K) ruclips.net/video/cLXEVvVs82I/видео.htmlsi=z-REe2ya7C3mzpEO .... Dream Theater formed in the 80s and released their first studio in 1989, though that was with a different lead singer (Charlie Dominici, who sadly passed away last November). James Labrie took over as lead singer on Images & Words in 1992 and that's when they broke out. The best way to describe Dream Theater is Metallica's heavy nature + Iron Maiden vocals + Rush technical ability. Scenes From A Memory is a great place to start as that was Jordan's first album with the band and features a fair amount of classical piano bits. The story is incredible, though can be a tad difficult to follow without detailed lyrics as there's 5 characters that the POV shifts between. The Scenes From New York live show from 2000 also features some video segments to help reinforce the story. (ruclips.net/video/7BqbZ5Etv40/видео.html).

The medley goes in this order:
Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity (Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory)
Metropolis-Part I: "The Miracle and the Sleeper" (Images and Words)
      Erotomania (Awake)
Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity (Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory)
Metropolis-Part I: "The Miracle and the Sleeper" (Images and Words)
A Change of Seasons: IV. The Darkest of Winters (A Change of Seasons)
Ytse Jam (When Dream and Day Unite)
Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity (Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory)
      Paradigm Shift (Liquid Tension Experiment)
      Universal Mind (Liquid Tension Experiment)
Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity (Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory)
