These guys are masters of their instruments. The song you chose is a medley of many of their songs and they have a massive library of a huge range of types of albums too. It is really hard to say where to start. As you heard, they are a progressive metal band. I'm a fan of listening to whole albums by them. I would start with Images and Words, front to back that album is incredible. If you are looking for something more modern and heavy try Train of Thought or Octavarium. Great stuff, keep it up. Btw, huge fan of Babymetal, glad you got a chance to dig deeper into their music.
Images and Words is still the best representation of who DT are at their core. I'd go for Awake next because of it's complexity and the 7 string heaviness. Then a modern album like A Dramatic Turn of Events.
@Metallisika Still that doesn't happen til like the 10 minute mark.
@Puritania why would you doubt that?
Start with the album Metropolis Pt.2, then let yourself go down the rabbit hole :)
Instrumentals are their best songs, simply cós labrie’s annoying vocals aren’t there
so much fun seeing people that have never heard the most talented band in the history of the universe before :)
This was a live medley of a variety of their instrumentals. A way for them to showcase their killer instrumentals in one extended jam. While a bit frenetic...a sick medley. From the best progressive rock band on the planet.
i dont think this guy has any clue what a medely is.
I have always been impressed with dream theater love them. Just found another band equally talented. Look into arch echo color wheel and immediate results. Good stuff
All I can say is Holy Shit! Why have I never heard of Dream Theater before? My head must have been stuck in the sand. I will absolutely be delving deeper into Dream Theater. The musicianship here is masterful.
Kathy H You will not regret it I assure you.
The two songs that got me to purchase their material were Breaking All Illusions, and The Best of Times. Both have incredible emotional moments. In case u wondered, what u just watched was filmed and put to blu ray, Dream Theater Live at Budokan. Excellent 5.1 mix if u got a good system
Don't expect the same drummer if you're watching or listening to recent stuff, or songs within last ten years, more accurately.
Yeah, I'd start with the Mike Portnoy stuff, it's just a cut above anything released in the last 10 years. Maybe Metropolis II: Scenes from a Memory (the main song in the medley above, _The Dance of Eternity_ is from this album)...it's their best-written album and a fan favorite. The song _A Change of Seasons_ is also a must-listen, but just get the song, no point getting the whole EP unless you're actually buying a physical CD (and who does that anymore?). And from there, I'd go to the double-album, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, which is some of the most epic music ever recorded.
Let us know what your favorites are! I highly recommend "A Change of Seasons" "Learning to Live" "Vacant + Stream of Consciousness" (they go back to back together) and "Panic Attack"
May I recommend The Glass Prison by Dream Theater. This epic will send you through a wormhole. It's that awesome!!
Agreed.
That song is epic!!!!
I used to play The Glass Prison to my son before Bedtime. Now he goes to DT shows with me. Always enjoy seeing your comments Alan. Peace.
Love that arpeggio solo at the beginning.
The most technically gifted band ever.Welcome to Dream Theater.
AAL?
One word only..... RUSH. Unlike DT ( whom i love ) btw, Rush can write a good song. Dt is insanely good but rush sounds this full, with better songs, and with only 3 people.
@@Mattyjs100 I like Rush as well, who doesn't, in fact they were one of DT biggest influences,I stand by my Statement DT Band members are technically better musicians which is subjective of course, and i dont think i said that Rush could not write good songs.
@@Mattyjs100 Rush is my favorite band and their songwriting chops blow Dream Theater out of the water, but they're not anywhere near as technically skilled as DT. But DT isn't the most technical band either... I haven't followed the genre for years, but even back when I did, bands like Spiral Architect and Spastic Ink could play circles around DT as well. There may be more recent bands that push the edge even farther.
EVER.
If you ever feel useless, just remember that Dream Theater's vocalist had to stand on the sideline for this whole medley...
😂😂 DUDEEeee
They literally cramp the hardest parts of their most difficult songs into one session 🤣
Petrucci definitely needs a fresh pick after this song
myung needs new fingers, or does he? he is god after all
Even some LTE mixed in.
@@petedog9581 universal mind has my all time favorite guitar intro.
*cram, cramp is somthing you get in a muscle.
DT is the Prog Metal band that many musicians watch to have their mouth involuntarily sag open. It is a band of extreme virtuosos. It can be A LOT to take in. I left their Scenes From a Memory album in my car for a year straight without listening to anything else when I was driving and I was still going "Wow! what was that?" a year after I started listening to it. These guys haven't had much in the way of mainstream success. I think it is a bit too much for many people. These guys are who I watch when I want to see the top echelon of musicianship. No one exceeds them, though many great bands (Haken, and more) have been inspired by them. This crazy skill level is not always what music needs, but it has its place. We need a dream theater. This is to basketball for example what it would be like to go watch the best player at the time doing his thing. Same too with this music. Or watching the greatest gymnast pull off their routine. Composition does not require this level of skill, but there needs to be a band like this to remind us of just what we can do. This is LIVE... friggin' insane.
Deva Winblood has kokoo
Dream theater isn't a one-shot reaction band, it's more of a rabbit-hole band. They do have some mainstream popularity, but they are considered more of a music nerd's or musician's band. Their following is still huge though. Prepare for another Nightwish type of experience if you start digging into their catalog.
This is golden era DT, top of their game with their best set, best line up and best quality. They were firing on all cylinders in that show!
I can't believe I've found someone who just discovered the miracle or Dream Theater and their 1st song has to be Instrumedley! Talk about leaping into the deep end!
You are so right ! For dude to dive into DTR with this cut is amazing ! Saw these guys 3/4 in NYC and they tore a hole in my psyche again. Brilliant performance as always. GOTTA TRAVEL TO SEE THEM AGAIN IF GOD PERMITS !!!!! Having seen ELP decades ago they rule. LIVE IS HOW ONE MUST EXPERIENCE THEM.
"I don't even know what their singer sounds like." His greatest performance was on Stream Of Consciousness. Before the butthurt comments come, I have love for James.
thehousehack Don’t forget his performance on Dance of Eternity or Enigma Machine.
You guys should mention his old school voice... How about Erotomania?
Only part of DT I don't like
Lol poor James....
Food poison ruined everything 😅😅😅
Check "Learning to live" to listen to the singer at his best. Other good songs to react to "the glass prison" and "a nightmare to remember".
id say anything from early DT is laBries best performance
The final section, from 12:20 on, is called Hell’s Kitchen, and I think the full piece is their finest composition along with the song it leads in to, Lines In The Sand. As a piece of music it’s just breathtaking.
For something different, I suggest you look at the work of Steven Wilson, solo and with the band Porcupine Tree. Examples include Routine, Harmony Korine or The Raven That Refused To Sing (solo) or Trains, Anesthetize or Fear Of A Blank Planet (PT).
The whole band rips but their drummer at the time Mike Portnoy was a straight-up Beast
"every member"
@@shirohemoth1946 for sure I'm a guitar player 35 years so petrucci is a god. Portnoy is just my favorite drummer
James Melton john myung is a god on bass
@@shirohemoth1946 agreed
@@jamesmelton5245 and then theres james.............

....yeah....
He sings....
Albums that don't have a bad song on them:
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt.2 Scenes from a Memory
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Opeth - Still Life
I didn’t know that there is a musician who has never heard of Dream Theater :)
Especially a guitarist...
May I recommend "Constant Motion" by Dream Theater? You'd be the first, set the bar dude! Love your reactions
RareHarmony I think Jamie Horsley has reacted to that song.
I love the breakdown into Ytsejam.
I love Ytse Jam.
I would highly recommend "Metropolis Pt. 1 - The Miracle and the Sleeper" from their 1992 Masterpiece "Images and Words".
To me this song embodies everything DT stand for. I must have heard it at least 500 times during the years.
James Labrie (Vocals), John Myung (Bass GOD) and of course John Petrucci (guitars) are the remaining members from this era. Jordan Rudess (Keys) and Mike Mangini (drums, meh) are "new" to the band. Sounds funny, because JR has been for some 20 years now... 😂
Andi1878 METROPOLIS PART 1 is a legend.. my fav song ever.. a masterpiece..
Jordan and Mike are both very gifted musicians, but I think the original lineup from Images and Words was the best. However, Derek Sherinian did a damn fine job in his time with Dream Theater. I truly don't believe there is a proper replacement for Mike Portnoy, he was simply too much a part of Dream Theater.
What kind of guitarist does not know who Petrucci is?
A bad one 😭 I'm going to make up for my crimes now!!
So mean 😅
I see that "trying to understand what I'm hearing" face 😂😂
They were once called a perfect band. Having all of the members (except vocals) top musicians in the world base on what instrument they played. They also try to make really technical songs so only few can cover their song and if your band can cover their song why the hell are you not yet famous? The level of skill required to play their song is superb!
They’ve pretty much dedicated their lives to practicing. Where most of us have a day job where we work 6-8 hours, they’re practicing that much daily. It’s pretty insane, but they obviously love their work. Their concerts are really long and super enjoyable, and it’s obvious how much work they put in.
A rookie practices until he can get it right. An expert practices until he can’t get it wrong.
I'm so borrowing that last quote
2019 brother.. and you kidding dont know DT ? lol man....
The moment you said that you never heard about DT before I stopped to watch your video, a guitarist who never heard of John Petrucci?! Come on dude
I apologize 😭😭
Best guitarist of 2019: John Petrucci. Listen to their new album. I personally don't like James Labrie's singing style, but the band is insane. If you want a Dream Theater sound, but instrumental only, listen to Liquid Tension Experiment. That's Dream Theater without the singer (and ex-drummer Mike Portnoy).
@@Luniversed But now you've heard of their music, don't feel bad. We call come together because of love for them.
Oh look we found the pretentious music snob.
@@zerofoxarmy and the bassist
Nobody, as far as I saw, messed up. Lol! These guys are Jedi musicians. My favorite band. EVER. My favorite song would have to be Scene 9: Finally Free, from Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
Every Member of Dream Theater past and present are always voted as the best in their category,Masters at their Craft is an understatement.. DT
As I Am by Dream Theater
Insane solo in that one.
Try these out...
1. Dance of Eternity
2. Pull Me Under
3. Octavarium
4. The Count of Tuscany
5. The Glass Prison
6. Illumination Theory
7. Bridges in the Sky
I recommend just picking one of their albums, turning up your headphones and sit back and enjoy. I personally love all of their albums start to finish.
If it wasn't apparent already, this is a medley of a bunch of instrumental sections of their tunes. What a way to start off hearing Dream Theater. A bit much to take in!!!!
edit: Okay so I finished watching the video and here's my only recommendation. It's the first song I ever heard of them back in 1991 and it's probably still their best known hit. Pull Me Under. Check it and great reaction!
I think it's actually their ONLY hit, by the charts, but to Dream Theater enthusiasts like us, it was only the beginning...
Best Dream Theater song to introduce yourself to them: Under A Glass Moon. That whole Images and Words album actually!
Four of the most talented musicians alive, plus a singer who’s not bad by any stretch of the imagination. Dream theater is a powerhouse of a band. Hard to go wrong with them, but they can be a bit overwhelming if you’re not used to technical progressive music. Good entry points are As I Am, Pull Me Under, Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, Home (though that one benefits most from a full album play through as it’s a concept album telling one huge story).
Guys like this really just picked up where ELP, YES, early GENESIS and King Crimson left off !!
This is kind of an extreme way to begin your DT journey 🤣
They are prog masters and they are very well known for their long masterpieces.
Try For example :
Octavarium live from Score
Illumination theory live Boston
The count of tuscany
A nightmare to remember
They also do shorter and catchier songs and ballads and other instrumentals... you’ll see, plenty to discover 🤗
Cheers from Paris and enjoy the ride :-)
It’s good for u to know that this was a medley of instrumental sections
I would love a "The Count Of Tuscany" reaction. It's just an epic journey from start to finish. One of their best, without a doubt.
You are a guitar player - you need NEED to listen to John Petrucci's (the guitarist in Dream Theater) solo album called Suspended Animation. Songs like Damage Control and Glasgow Kiss are gonna blow your mind (i think)
These are a lot more fun if you know the songs the interludes are from
Haken and Leprous are two bands that are very much influenced by Dream Theater in different ways. Highly recommend them. Anyone wanna list some songs you think he’d enjoy by them?
Nil By Mouth...or anything Haken, if we're being honest. Maybe Celestial Elixer.
James probably eating a steak dinner and still has time to spare😂😂😂 what a band
Dream theatre has so many good songs. One of their more popular songs is "Pull me Under" not my favorite but a great song that's well known. Check it out.
Please check out Andy James. You can watch him play through several of his songs on RUclips. I recommend the songs '85 or "The watcher" You 'll be in total disbelief of his skill and guitar tone.
How? They all met at the Berklee College of Music (minus the keyboardist, but the previous one was from Berklee as well).. they're all virtuosos.
Yea he was from Julliards...
Please react to "Universal Mind" by Liquid Tension Experiment
ow man.. the tightness , the showmanship, the musicality, so perfect
Learning to live is a great song.
Under A Glass Moon, Take the Time, and Learning to Live are the best songs to showcase their ridiculous talent. In fact, ridiculous is an understatement. Collectively, they are definitely in the running for most talented group of musician in the last 35 years. James Lebrie (not heard here) is an exceptional vocalist; John Petrucci is undeniably in a group of guitarists that could all be labeled "the best ever;" John Myung is the Victor Wooten of bass guitar (lol!); Kevin Moore, Derek Sherinian and Jordan Rudess are all unbelievable keyboardists; and then there's Mike Portnoy, he is easily on the list of greatest drummers ever with individuals like Neal Peart, Buddy Rich, Keith Moon, etc..
Did you even attempt to try and figure or the tempo? lol
They're a great band, and it often takes multiple samples to truly understand what they can do musically. This was a mashup of a bunch of their songs. You would have a great time digging into their catalog
DT's golden era.
I just took a look at your 365 playlist, and I'm already very impressed! You just got a new subscriber, because I intend to listen to every reaction you post in this series. Now, I have a couple of suggestions that I hope you will eventually be able to get to.
The first is Steve Stevens, the fantastic guitarist that performed on and co-wrote many of the hits Billy Idol had back in the '80s. There are two sons of his, very different from each other I will recommend here. The first is an acoustic guitar piece named Run Across Desert Sands. Stevens is a master of Spanish flamenco, and you will find that influence most strongly here. The second song, with a lot of heavy electric riffs, is Small Arms Fire. I doubt you'll find live performances of either of these, but either one would be an outstanding choice.
The second artist I'd like to recommend is Roy Buchanan. While there are many great songs that showcase his talent. the one I'm going to recommend is The Blues Lover.
Edit:
One more I need to mention: Chris Rea, and although there are songs that became more popular, the one I'd like to suggest is Looking For a Rainbow. Chris is a fantastic guitar player, and really knows how to use a slide.
If you like Dream Theater I believe you'd also like Darkwater. All songs from their album Human are great
This showcases the best of Dream Theater. They rarely get radio airplay but one song from their “Images and Words” album in 1992 called “Pull Me Under” actually got their name in the mainstream.
You smile at all the right moments!! Shows you know your stuff....
Incredible guys
Haken - 1985. You’re welcome!
Welcome to the world of Dream Theater my friend! Enjoy.
All From the L.I.N.Y. who brought you DT, Twisted Sister, Zebra, B.Joel, P. Benetar, Riot and Sooooooooooo many More !
"reacts" is a bit of a strong of a term for whats actually going on
😂
Yeah all these low effort clowns are the same. Bob your head for a couple minutes, "Wow that was amazing. Please like and subscribe." But I still end up clicking just to listen to the songs anyway 😆
In their teens and college years, they would practice 8 hours per day (Mike Portnoy - drummer, John Myung - bassist, and John Petrucci - guitarist). Jordan Ruddess (keyboards) got accepted to Juliard at 9 years old.
Yeah, these guys can be pretty extreme to listen to. You probably picked a bad one as far as a track that you could sit down and have a coherent, easy listen to for your first taste. It's kind of all over the place because it's a mashup of a bunch of different songs of theirs into one manic track. Check out some of their albums though, it's not usually quite this schizophrenic but the same crazy musicianship is always there. Great band, saw them live last year! My brain fell on the floor. Their 90's albums are much better, but that's just my opinion. Pretty much all of those are really good. It gets a little more hit and miss after that, but still some really good stuff.
Try Plini, it’s a good look into someone that just a master of his trade
Hey mam do you really think you are a guitarist? Stop dreaming
First learn guitar how to play then call yourself a guitarist
Should check out savatage. Savatage is what birthed trans Siberian orchestra Paul Oneil was their producer and Jon Olivia the. Singer/writer I'd say gutter balled or where the crowds have gone. TSO play quite a few savatage songs live. Criss oliva died in a car accident have that not happen his name would be up there with randy Rhodes. As a guitarist I'm sure that has to peak your interest.
Good suggestion. Dead Winter Dead - excellent album all round.
@@andystokes8702 my personal favorite is Steeets a Rock Opera. The song Christmas eve from dead winter dead is actually what sparked TSO. However this is a much later album. Criss passed long before this album and Jon was no longer singing. On guitar is was Al Pitrelli who was Alice Coopers touring guitarist and vocals was Zachary Steven's
Best of times
This is their BEST work!!!!!
When you realize you're not even close to being as good as these guys
I love it
They cram too much in this instrumedley for me. Total sensory overload! What's their point? How the heck can they remember all this detail, and be so in sync with each other?
I think there are some dubbed parts in these video, watch the original video, just before john myung play his solo u will see he missed some notes but the bass line still played.
Or much better watch instrumedley john myung only
Great reaction! I hope the band YES makes it on to your "365" list... preferably their song "Close to the Edge"... since they are the influencers of this band as well as many others, including Rush. 🤘😎 💯
Will be right to it 👏👏
Amazing song, greatly written by the honorable James LaBrie, without him we wouldn't have this medley.
I'm not the biggest DT connoisseur, but I'd say you didnt pick the easiest song there. :D
You should go for Pull Me Under (live of course).
This is just medley of some of the library.....not a song......I suggest listening to entire body of work......no just musicians......artists. Some of the best are the ones live....absolutely even more appreciated

You are an adult guitarist? You have not heard of petrucci? Portnoy!? Myung? Have a place ready for me. Whatever rock you have Been under... It must have been secluded..
Check out some Liquid Tension Experiment.Live in Japan.Rediculous.
Dream Theater is all about great music, not about this mix of riffs. Show great songs to new people, because they all thinking DT is about technique.
Dream Theater is legendary. Check out the Train of Thought album where they make Metallica just look silly. Check out the Japanese guitarist Daisuke Kurasawa and his band. Especially the tiny little powerhouse girl drummer ruclips.net/video/kwsciXm_7sA/видео.html
Im 64 yrs. Old. First heard dt 1992 while in denver, co. Been a fan since and bought everything they had to offer since. Favorite songs are Under a glass moon and viper king. You might want to check out Porcupine tree, deadwing. Enjoy!
As far as progressive technical complexity and instrumental difficulty to play songs Dream Theatre is the best band ever in my view and more difficult than what Rush plays and I'm a massive Rush fan..Dream Theatre is one of my favorite bands also.
After Kevin Moore, it was nvr the same. I didn't know how much he contributed, until he was gone. Prodigy child that he is. I commend his replacement for being able to keep up sorta. But the sound came from Kevin.
Yow you didnt know this group really?! Oh come one hahaha... Dreamtheater the best progressive metal in the planet yow.!
If you liked what you heard, try Symphony X, (imo) not as good as Dream Theater, but Damn close.
Also trying to understand this song if you haven't been through the rest of their catalog is like trying to start at Avengers: Infinity War and understand the Marvel cinematic universe XD
If you've never heard of Dream Theater before, this song is a terrible introduction. This song is a bunch of snippets of other Dream Theater songs. It's meant for people who recognize them. For people who are unfamiliar, it will sound like schizophrenic chaos.
Please do a reaction to The Aristocrats song "Terrible Lizard" or "Spiritus Cactus"!
Great choice! DT is an amazing band, they are all masters
I can't really think of any band that sounds like them.
Bands have tried... but DT is so technical and their transitions are seamless, I haven't heard anyone come close to duplicating them.
Glass Prison would be a good one for you.
It's a compilation of many songs. Suggest any song on Images and Words or the Awake albums with the original members.
I never actually heard this version. Might have had to do some adjustments with the replacement drummer and possibly keyboard player. Neat note: around the 9:00 mark until around 9:50 both JP and JM have done their parts similarly on bass and guitar so if you’re not closing your eyes and head bobbing, you should see the hand/arm placement in very similar spots. If you look at a more modern live video, they actually stand together during that part to show it off which is pretty cool.
Check out Candiria, COG , FIshbone, Cynic and Cephalic Carnage
