Images & Words, still my favorite album from Dream Theater. This is the main ballad off this album. You guys will love everything off of it, I think. That is Jay Beckenstein from the group Spyro Gyra on the soprano saxophone. They recorded this album at his studio and he appeared as a guest on this song. Pull Me Under was their biggest hit off this album, and I think is still the biggest hit they've ever had, despite being a band still touring with a huge cult following. I would love to see your reaction to Metropolis Pt. 1.

If you bring new people closer to this band, you should start with other songs, which are "easier" to listen to.

This is not the normal Dream Theater music. This song is NOT progressive. Ballad as you can tell.
This is VERY early Dream Theater (DT) 1992.
In 1999, they switched keyboard players. The new keyboard player is Jordan Rudess. He went to Juilliard School of Music at age 8. Yes, he's a prodigy.
That's when they went full on Prog Metal. They have so many great songs and albums.
I will make a suggestion. They did a live album at Luna Park not too long ago. You should react to Metropolis Pt. 1. Live
Funny thing is, Metropolis Pt. 1, is from the same album Another Day is. This song is progressive metal at its finest.
Another suggestion would be from their sixth studio album, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. First song on the Album is Glass Prison. Absolutely phenomenal song. Check it out guys 😁

Dream Theater had their incredible moment in the sun with their 1992 album Images and Words. I highly recommend setting aside some time and listening to it from start to finish, as it is somewhat of a "concept album." I wore this record out back in the day. Their songs are so rich and complex, it's unreal at times. Ironically one of the best songs on that album is "Wait for Sleep," barely over two minutes long but simply gorgeous.

So long story but first happy mothers day Amber! My mom passed away last July from cancer so this is my first mothers day not having one 😢 This band means so much to me as it would wind up being my moms last live concert ever. I went to see these guys live by myself one year and was telling my mom all about it the next day and she said she wished I would have let her know because she would have gone with me. My mom has introduced me to soo much music during her life, one of her first concerts ever was Jimi Hendrix. So I was so thrilled a couple years later when Dream Theater came back to town for the 20th anniversary of the album Scenes From a Memory (which they played in its entirety), now it was my time to introduce her to a band that I love. I bought my brother, my mom and I tickets as a birthday present for my brother not knowing if mom would be well enough to even go when it came around. I didn't tell her at the time because I didn't want it weighting on her but a couple weeks before the show she was feeling much better so I told her about it and she was thrilled! So we all went and had an absolute blast! The look on my moms face seeing live music again after so long brought tears to my eyes. Last year for mother day my mom had us kids send her a song that reminded us of her. I sent her the song The Spirit Carries On which is on the album Scenes From a Memory, which they played that night when we saw them. It's another ballad like this song with a little bit of Pink Floyd vibes, very emotional. As everyone one else has suggesting I would recommend doing Pull Me Under next to get a better feel for the band but if you could eventually get around to The Spirit Carries On I think you guys would love it!

Dream Theater is an awesome band. This song comes off the album Images and Words, which is one of the best albums ever put out by any band. If you are going to react to more Dream Theater, you must, must do Pull Me Under. That is their signature song, and one of my favorite songs ever. Pull me Under....a must reaction!

This is one of their more straight forward songs in terms of arrangement. You have to check out Pull Me Under, Metropolis, Take The Time, Fatal Tragedy and Dance of Eternity. These guys are legends. All world class musicians. Their debut album came out in 1989, they broke through with 1992's Images and Words album. Every song is worth a listen.

Pull Me Under is definitely amazing as many have suggested.

This song was written specifically to be a hit and ended up going nowhere on the Billboard Top 100. Ironically it was "Pull Me Under" that put Dream Theater on MTV and radio stations across the country.
These guys are considered to be the godfathers of Progressive Metal in the 90s and ushered in an entire generation of progressive music in the decades that followed.

The saxophone on the song was courtesy of Jay Beckenstein of Spyro Gyra, who was asked by Dream Theater to guest on their 2nd album 'Images and words'... in 1992. It became their first (and only) gold-selling record in the US as their single 'Pull me under' became an unexpected hit... 'Pull me under' is 8 minutes long and got radio airplay that year as grunge rock took over everything in the early 90's. Dream Theater hoped that 'Another day' would be another successful single (the crossover ballad!) but it didn't match the success of 'Pull me under'.
Dream Theater's more metal songs - 'The glass prison' ... 'The test that stumped them all' ... 'Caught in a web' ... 'A fortune in lies' ... 'Under a glass moon' ... 'As I am' ... 'Constant motion'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
As a prog metal band, Dream Theater also made long, epic songs in the spirit of '2112' by Rush... Some of those tracks include:
'A change of seasons' ... 'Illumination theory' ... 'Octavarium' ... 'In the name of God' ... 'A nightmare to remember'...
Bands that have been devotees of Rush r so varied because Rush incorporated so many styles of music into their catalog... from heavy rock in the 70's to synth pop in the 80's... Primus (for example) are huge Rush fans and u can hear Geddy Lee's influence on Les Claypool's bass playing and Neil Peart's drum style in drummer Tim 'Herb' Alexander's beats.
Dream Theater were huge fans of their 70's records and wanted to be a more heavy metal version of Rush (w/ an 'edge' as u put it) because they also loved Iron Maiden, Queensryche, and Metallica... But they were also fans of radio-friendly bands like - Journey... Queen ... Deep Purple... Marillion... Kansas... and they were especially huge fans of prog rockers Yes. That was where inspiration came for ballads like 'Another day' ... and similar tracks like - 'Surrounded' ... 'Lifting shadows off a dream' ... 'Wither' ... 'The spirit carries on'... etc.
For the most part, Dream Theater was founded in 1985 and inspired primarily by the music of Rush... Mike Portnoy (drums) is a huge fan of Neil Peart and he also wrote the lyrics for many Dream Theater songs... He founded the band w/ John Petrucci (guitar) and John Myung (bass) when they met at Berklee College of Music and jammed together w/ Kevin Moore (keyboards)... Their 1989 debut album 'When dream and day unite'... was recorded in '88 w/ vocalist Charlie Dominici. It was a crude-sounding record but had a lot of potential and sonic finesse... They even went for a Rush-style instrumental... 'YTSE Jam' (which was similar to 'YYZ' by Rush) However, the record was not promoted and Dream Theater still needed a singer that could deliver for them up front.
James LaBrie (vocals) came to Dream Theater from Canada around 1991 and impressed the band w/ his powerful, operatic vocals... Their 2nd album ('Images and words') finally came out in 1992 and Dream Theater toured for the first time as the album sold gold and became a huge success in Europe and Asia.
However, the band went for a heavier sound on their 3rd album 'Awake' in 1994... Unfortunately, keyboardist Kevin Moore quit the band after the recording and the album was not as heavily promoted as 'Images and words'... Dream Theater also found themselves being unfairly linked to 80's music, which was a career-killer in the alternative rock 90's.
Another delay between records delivered a 4th album 'Falling into infinity' in 1997... the band felt they compromised musically and were unhappy w/ the album and the only single 'Hollow years'... was another ballad.
In 1999, drummer Mike Portnoy put his foot down; if Dream Theater was going to carry on, the record company was to be shut out of the studio and the band would have complete creative control... The band was joined by Jordan Rudess (keyboards) who joined in '99 and the next album "Scenes from a memory" was a concept album... No music videos or singles. Dream Theater would play the entire album live on tour in 1999/ 2000 and play 3 hr concerts (like Led Zeppelin used to) and the band's fanbase solidified.
More importantly, Dream Theater earned their creative freedom and spent the years until now w/ full control of their music.
Mike Portnoy left the band in 2010 and was replaced by drummer Mike Mangini in 2011... Recently, Dream Theater announced that Mike Portnoy had rejoined the band and they were planning a new album in 2024.

This is one of my personal favorite Dream Theater songs. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it back in 1992 with the release of their major label debut album, Images And Words. They had a breakout hit, still their only one to this very day even though they have an amazing catalog. The song was called “Pull Me Under” and it’s been a staple in their live shows ever since. It’s quite a bit heavier than this song here, but Dream Theater are masters at Creating music that uses so many different styles, though they are primarily a Heavy Metal band, and yes they are very progressive. They have some of the most complex and intricate pieces of just about any band.
Like you heard, every member is a master at their instrument. Their drummer, Mike Portnoy was absolutely influenced by Neil Peart from Rush and he’s does a little bit of everything. Their guitarist, John Petrucci is absolutely one of the best out there, bar none. The keyboard player on this song, Kevin Moore, is no longer in the band, but he was integral to their early direction and success. He was replaced by a couple of other keyboardists over the years, but Jordan Rudess has been their current Keyboard player since 1998. Not enough good things can be said about their bass player, John Myung, who’s just incredible. He’s like Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) on steroids. Definitely one of my favorite bands. Their catalog is deep… both in number of songs/albums and themes/topics. They also tend to write very long songs.
There may not be too many songs you can do on your channel unless you’re OK with 30 minute reaction videos, which I wouldn’t be against. Their music is amazing and you’ll definitely enjoy almost everything you hear by them. You should definitely checkout their biggest song “Pull Me Under” but if you can, don’t do the official video because it’s not the full song and even the bad themselves don’t like the video, but it helped launch their career as one of the best loved Progressive Metal bands. Try the album cut. They also have videos for a few other songs, but again they tend to get chopped up because the songs tend to be long and didn’t conform to the old MTV video length standards.

I took my teenage son and a few friends to see DT back in the 90’s, awesome concert. I remember the lead singer left the stage while somebody was playing in the spotlight, he missed his cue a few times, finally the drummer, who was clearly pissed off threw his drumstick at him off stage and he suddenly came back out 🤣
