      1992 - 1996 was peak Dream Theater. Hearing "Pull Me Under" for the first time on the radio back in 1992 was one of those "Who the fuck are these guys???" kind of moments. Metalheads love metal for the music, not the lifestyle, so we appreciate people who focus on the music and analyze it, even when it's just from a vocal perspective. I've also found that metalheads really love sharing their music with other people, which is probably why we're, as a community, drawn to these reaction channels.

      Check out Three Lives by Octavision RIGHT NOW if you haven't heard it yet. Its a 9½ minute epic song with Victor Wooten on bass. Its A LOT like an old DT instrumental. Very catchy and the Mark V Boogie guitar tones on a 7 string Mayones by Hovak are gorgeous...he is THE MAN. • @daviddecker404
      @daviddecker404 5 лет назад +32

      Technically, LaBrie is a much better singer now than he was back then. If you go back through the progression of live vids from the Images & Words tour through to the Octavarium tour, and then the subsequent tours after Octavarium, his live performances deteriorated up until that Octavarium tour. Like most vocalists, he most likely did not learn the "tricks of the trade" for preserving his voice throughout those early tours. I think I remember reading he did some extensive work with a vocal coach to address a lot of that (which a lot of other professional vocalists do) and it has made a drastic difference in the quality of his voice throughout the tour. Meaning that in the early days, if you caught them at the beginning of a tour segment, you got a much better performance than if you caught them at the end of a tour. Now he's much better at maintaining consistency throughout.

    • @ccalmus
      @ccalmus 5 лет назад +14

      @@daviddecker404 Yes, David. agree, that LaBrie is more consistent nowadays... singing off-tune. His voice is just not what it used to be any more. Some say that he overused his voice or didn't use correct singing techniques in the early years of DT, which has affected his singing abilities (I also know about the food poisoning incident), I can't comment on those things, but I just don't find that voice very appealing any more on live concerts. I do listen to studio recordings, which are still relatively decent. Not here to start an argument, just my subjective opinion.

      However, it's true that the food poisoning per se is not the reason why LaBrie's voice getting worse. We must look at the context at the time. In an interview, he said that after the poisoning, he should take a rest and not singing for a couple of months. But, he "ignored" it because at the time, DT need to grab their momentum by touring after the success of "Image and Words". LaBrie himself knew what the risk was. Valefree how is he “the word kind of fan”
      He misses that dream theater , so do I so much. This is one of the best eras for dream theater. I know why he misses THAT dream theater, the dream theater nowadays sucks imo. I miss Portnoy in the band.
      The fact that you called him the worst kind of fan goes to show that you haven’t experienced enough of old dream theater to know that it’s better than 2010’s dream theater. Get out of here bud.

    Of all the members in Dream Theater James gets by far the most criticism. He's really an amazing singer, but his voice can be a bit of an acquired taste and a lot of people never manage to acquire it.

    • @theCTCamp
      @theCTCamp 5 лет назад +3

      He's a lot like Geddy Lee. There's nothing technically wrong with his singing but it doesn't resonate with some people. But Labrie likes to bounce around a lot which I think hinders his voice at times. Hitting those high notes takes a lot of air, and when you're running and hopping about, you steal some of that valuable air from the notes.

      That's the same reaction I think people have to Megadeth. I remember my roommate used to hate them, but after awhile he got it.

      that is true, but another factor is that hes in a band with john myung, john petrucci, jordan rudess and mike/mike (also known as god, god, god, god and god). i cant think of anyone who wouldnt pale at least a bit next to those performers

    • @reshpeck

      Or King Diamond. Now HE'S an acquired taste. Andy LaRoque keeps you listening, and eventually you actually start to appreciate what he's doing with his ridiculous falsetto is very complex and original

    Great video! Images and Words is one of my very favourite albums. I had the pleasure of seeing Dream Theater perform the entire album 3 years ago in Glasgow. Quite possibly the best gig I've ever been to!

    interesting choices for reactions. 🤘🏻 I'd love to recommend some songs/artists that spanned a wide genres.
    1. Bjork - too many but hyperballad, joga, all is full of love and Pagan Poetry would be ideal.
    2. Mike Patton - he's the vocalist of - well, better Wikipedia his long ass list projects 🤣😅. It would be interesting if you pick his band Mr.Bungle songs
    3. Incubus - so many of their songs,personally i really like "if not now, when?" which is also their album title of the same name.
    4. Karnivool - they're an obscure but brilliant alternative/prog-rock band from Australia respected by so many known bands and have a wide fanbase. 'new day' and 'simple boy' from "Sound Awake" album.
    5. A perfect Circle - you already reacted to this but i'd love to see the song 'by and down'
    6. Puscifer - you're going to have an eargasm reacting to their songs since it's Maynard James Keenan's most exploratory band as a vocalist, he's having fun singing on this band ! Specifically the songs - 'potions' as well as the epic song called "grand canyon".
