Dream Theater isn't your typical metal band. Their instrumentalists are all virtuosos who attended some of the top music schools in the country. Their current keyboardist in particular was a classical piano prodigy who got accepted to one of the top music schools in the country (Juilliard) at age 9! The album that for the song you listened to is one of their best. While many enjoy this song, there's a couple others on the album which are better.
    1) Pull Me Under was their first song to chart and remains a favorite among many as it's an easier introduction to their progressive musical elements
    2) Metropolis P1 is probably the most technical piece on the album and a great listen if you can handle how progressive it is.
    3) Learning to Live is perhaps the most complete song on the album and really shows off the vocal range of the lead singer on both the low end and the high end.
This band can be a rabbit hole with tons of music to listen to as they've released 15 albums and an EP which contains one of their all time best songs (A Change of Seasons).

Anything by Dream Theater is beyond epic. Try Metropolis part one and Learning to Live next. Thank you!

Hands down my favorite band of all time. An inspiration in many ways and an endless supply of talent providing so much in the way of music to appreciate. Honestly never get tired of listening to them and have been a fan since Pull Me Under dropped in the late 80s.

Dream Theater have a wide range of songs from epic tracks to mellow ballads... Here are some suggestions:
Standard songs - 'Pull me under' ... 'Caught in a web' ... 'Constant motion' ... 'You not me'
Ballads - 'Wither' ... 'Another day' ... 'The spirit carries on' ... 'Along for the ride'
Epic tracks - 'Trial of Tears' ... 'The glass prison' ... 'A view from the top of the world' ... 'A nightmare to remember'

The Count Of Tuscany belongs on the epic rating IMO, it just hits so right

Dream Theater call themselves progressive metal... They wanted their music to fuse all their influences from Led Zeppelin and Metallica, to Genesis and Rush... The Beatles to Frank Zappa... and Mozart to Deep Purple... Rush and Yes were the band's 2 primary influences. Dream Theater are also a stellar live band and never play the same set of songs from 1 tour to another.
Current line-up is: James LaBrie (vocals), John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), Jordan Rudess (keyboards) and Mike Mangini (drums)
The band first formed as Majesty in 1985 when John Petrucci (guitar) and John Myung (bass) attended Berklee College of Music in the East Coast and met Mike Portnoy (drums) and were the only students into hard rock and heavy metal, as well as prog music. Kevin Moore (keyboards) joined (he attended another college) and Chris Collins (vocals) was their original singer and did their first demos. Majesty was signed in 1988 and already had a new batch of songs and a new singer Charlie Dominici (vocals)... They recorded their debut album, but had to change the name - Portnoy's father in California suggested the name Dream Theater after a movie house where he lived.
Dream Theater's debut album 'When dream and day unite' was released in 1989... the band kept their Majesty logo shaped like an 'M' on the album cover(s)... However, the album was not promoted and Dream Theater did not tour, playing only select area shows. They decided to part ways w/ Charlie Dominici in 1990 and work on new music without a singer... In 1991, they finally hired Canadian singer James LaBrie (vocals) and their demos were so promising that they were signed to a new label and released their 2nd album 'Images and words' in 1992 and began touring for the first time... The single 'Pull me under' ...became a radio hit, then got MTV airplay... and Dream Theater quickly rose as the album sold gold in the US (half million copies) and was a commercial success in Europe and Asia by 1993.
The band recorded the 3rd album 'Awake' in 1994, but keyboardist Kevin Moore quit the band before the release... Derek Sherinian (keyboards) did the tour and joined full time... They recorded an EP 'A change of seasons' in 1995 w/ a 20+ minute epic track.
By 1996, the 90's grunge/ alternative era had diminished their popularity and their label kept them in limbo... They were finally able to record a 4th album 'Falling into infinity' in '97, but sales had gone down and drummer Mike Portnoy felt that the band had compromised their music to appease the record label... Portnoy stayed in Dream Theater under the condition that the music would be solely directed by the band and Jordan Rudess (keyboards) would replace Sherinian.
Jordan Rudess was a graduate of Julliard and a musical genius... His contributions were invaluable on the 1999 concept album 'Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes from a Memory'... The band revisited a track 'Metropolis Pt.1' on 'Images and words' and decided to make a full album based on the 1 song... They performed the entire album in concert and released a concert video (and CD) 'Live Scenes from New York' in 2001.
Dream Theater grew heavier and bolder w/ subsequent albums "Six degrees of inner turbulence" (2002), Train of Thought (2003), and 'Octavarium' (2005) as they celebrated 20 years as a band w/ a live album 'Score' (performed w/ a full orchestra).
Dream Theater's popularity was exponentially increasing w/ 2 more albums 'Systematic Chaos' (2007) and 'Balck clouds and silver linings' (2009)... But in 2010, founding drummer Mike Portnoy announced he was leaving Dream Theater to focus on other musical projects.
In 2011, Dream Theater posted their auditions for a new drummer online and announced that Mike Mangini (drums) had joined the band - coincidentally, he was a teacher at Berklee where the band had formed in 1985.
'A dramatic turn of events' (2011) was the first album to feature Mike Mangini on drums... followed by the self-titled 2013 'Dream Theater' album... In 2016, Dream Theater released the orchestral 2 CD concept album 'The Astonishing'... Their last 2 albums were 'Distance over time' (2019) and 'A view from the top of the world' (2021)

Definetely would enjoy seeing you reacti to more Dream Theater. Good news : they got a big discography and 90% of their tracks are great and unique. My favorite band, every member has an insane technical level and almost every song has good surprises and great riffs ! Enjoy the ride ! I suggest :
    "Home" is a must listen
"Glass Prison" or any track from "Train of thought" for heavier stuff
any track from "Images and Words" for more melodic stuff
