I did not see this coming at all. While DT put out some incredibly solid albums with Mangini behind the kit, their classics were with Portnoy. Also, huge props to Mangini for being a good sport about the lineup change.
He got 13 years with a band many others would have loved to play with for even one album. I don't know the circumstances behind his leaving... or his true feelings on it. I mean, DT did say some years back that the line-up with Mangini would be the last, so there's that. Clearly, something changed along the way. I wonder if, between hearing what Portnoy was doing with bands like Sons of Apollo (so much of that same MP-era DT energy and creativity in those two albums), his work with John Petrucci on the solo album, and then his work with Liquid Tension Experiment 3... I wouldn't be surprised if John and Jordan didn't start to miss that spirit in DTs work and that got the ball rolling. Or.. maybe it was already in their heads, and the JP and LTE albums were them "testing the waters" to see if the chemistry was still there.. And then James LaBrie and MP being able to make amends was the final test... which of course they both passed. Whatever the case... I'm glad they found their way back to it, and he's now rejoining. I'm ecstatic about the news... both as a fan, and for them as friends. A great day for Dream Theater fans.
@@twocatsgaming6628 Can you elaborate on LaBrie and Portnoy making amends? I love the band but haven't been in nearly as deep as I was back in the Octavarium days. I hope they find the inspiration of their first albums which in my opinion represented the true soul of Dream Theater, but I'm rather skeptical about this...
Wow, didn't see this coming. Mangini is a techincal wizard and was the perfect guy to fill and in some cases expand on what Portnoy can do on drums. MP just has more emotion and style in his playing. Glad the gang is back together.
This is the best comment in the thread. Portnoy is not the technical drummer Mangini is - not even close. But, I agree with what you said. Sort of a similar comparison between Donati and Lang, though Donati is about Lang's technical equivalent, and probably exceeds him (according to Lang) in many respects, but everyone knows Lang's foot independence is inhumanly good.
@revyu6754 thanks for the kind words. I feel bad for MM because the man is one of the greatest drummers ever and the way he handled MPs return shows you that he's also a great person. I'm sure he didn't think after 13 years this would be the end of his run with Dream Theater.

I never thought this day would ever come! I'm really happy that Portnoy's back and can't wait to hear the next album! Sure, it is sad for Mangini, but he is releasing a solo album and I'm pretty sure he's gonna get another gig real quick if he wanted to! I'd love to see him back in Annihilator!
Being a drummer I love both portnoy and mangini they’re both obviously capable of playing what dream theater does because of their versatility which makes them one of the best of many drummers in the world
I'm gonna miss Mike. Welcome back Mike.
I'm verry glad MP back again 👍👍🤟🤟
I have mixed feelings. Although I'm so happy Portnoy's back, I feel bad about Mangini being out. He's an incredible drummer and a class act. I'm glad I was able to see him play live several times.
Welcome back Portnoy!!! Thank you for putting out Images and Words"album! 🎼🎸🥁💕🤘😎💯🔥🙏🎶👍👊
Portnoy is gonna struggle playing the Mangini parts. Still excited for new DT!!
This is assuming they continue playing Mangini era material, but if they do then yes certain drum parts of certain songs will probably be (for lack of a better term) dumbed down a bit. But the flip-side of that will be getting to hear those songs with Portnoy's unmistakable groove and feel. That's a worthy tradeoff if you ask me.
Why do you think MP will struggle playing drums? 😂😂
@@JohnWiku- Mangini is an exceptional technician capable of playing things that other drummers, including Portnoy, can’t do. He is one of the most technically proficient drummers there has ever been. Having said that, it is music - not a circus act. Portnoy will do fine in his own way, but I doubt he could replicate Mangini’s drum parts. Or would want to…
@@SAHBfan I agree, but it was the same for Mangini when playing Portnoys parts. While he could easily play MPs parts, it never felt or sounded the same. I could tell right away that it wasn't MP when listening to them playing live. In my opinion, they are 2 of the best drummers in the world, but neither could mimic each other enough to not be noticeable sonically. I've seen em live 16 times so far, and i look forward to seeing them another 16 if they go that far. I would love so see them together on stage at the same time. But think about what size the drum crew would have to be if they both had their own kits.
I am glad to hear MP finally return. What a long journey.
Distance Over Time might be one of my favorites since Scenes, but I have missed Portnoy.
Mangini was a session drummer in DT, he didn't wrote a single note. Best albums ended when Portnoy left the band
@@ИгорьСергеевич-е9эhe wrote many "notes" and many great drum parts, get the fuck out with that shit
That's only true for their first album together, Mangini wrote the drum parts for the following albums after that, and you can really tell.@@ИгорьСергеевич-е9э
@@ИгорьСергеевич-е9эThis is wrong in multiple ways. Mangini wrote the drum parts, he is credited as a writer on most of their songs, and..... he also wrote LYRICS for Room 137.
The only album Mangini was a "session drummer" for was Dramatic Turn of Events. And that was a decade ago... where have you been all this time?
DOT was the best Mangini era album IMO
Thanks Mike Mangin! I feel for you just thinking after so many years to hear that the band wants to move without you must be heart breaking. Props to you and the other band members to have done this move with what it seems humility, respect and maturity. I must admit that I kind of what seeing this coming when Portnoy did LTE3 and the chemistry that was obvious. While i'm sad for Mangini, I am super happy for the return of Mike Portnoy. And i'm curious to see what other projects Mangini will embark on. Wishing him he founds happiness in his next endeavour.
I hated when Portnoy left but, now I feel bad for Mangini. He had to fill huge shoes. Who could do it? Mike Portnoy is the master. His drumming is beyond words.
I wasn't aware they'd had issues, although I vaguely remember Portnoy understandably expressing some negative feelings back when the split happened.
@@CemeteryGates17 , Portnoy ripped James's singing, and he continued to rag on him after he left. There was always speculation that James was the one who wanted him out, justifiably so.
@@crusher0427 Damn, I hadn't heard of that, sounds pretty rough. Thanks for sharing!
Yaaaaaaaaaaas! Grew to love Mangini unconditionaly but Portnoy is the original.
I have massive respect for both Mike's.
Now that MP has returned, I'm wondering if the magic is still there?
I anxiously await a sample leading up to their first album together again
My sentiments exactly... couldn't have said it any better myself.
I hope they find the inspiration of their first albums which in my opinion represented the true soul of Dream Theater, but I'm rather skeptical about this...
Portnoy: "sooo hey guys...do I really have to play Mangini's parts note for note?"
I'm sure he didn't think after 13 years this would be the end of his run with Dream Theater.
welcome home mike portnoy....and thank's a lot for everything mr mangini
Mike is the best drummer that DT has ever had...
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It is so BITTER SWEET. I love them both
Mangini is a superb, super, super, superb class of it’s own
Mike, thanks a lot, you were awesome!
Mike, welcome home!
👊🏼💥
Love Portnoy's drumming with Flying Colors and Winery Dogs
Welcome back, Mike Portnoy! The spirit of Dream Theater... the spirit carries on!
This makes me sooo happy!. i have nothing against mike mangini, he's awesome!, but i have always liked portnoys drumming. Let the memories flood into my brain!
Man I've been waiting for this for 13 years.
After this I am going to see the video where Lars auditioned for Dream Theater.🤘
Metallica should hire Mangini lol
The 2 Mikes both Phenomenal Drummers... No Losses there to either. All wins for DT.
FINALLY!!!! I KNEW THIS DAY WOULD COME!
I gave up hope… this is like WOW 🤩
Mission accomplished, Mike his back home again!!! Now we gotta see if we can get Kevin back!
I hope they do a show at some point where Portnoy and Mangini are sharing the stage for a song or two.
Mike Mangini is a very humble guy. Appreciate him so much for his incredible work with DT. Mike was also a programme developer for the renowned American Patriot Missile system. He's a living legend.
MP, JP and JM are the core of the band. Myung must be jumping with joy inside to finally be reunited with Portnoy.
Ikr
Loved that you mentioned "inside". Myung is gonna smirk. That's all you'll get, but frankly, all you ever need.
Now bring Kevin Moore back, also PLZ. That dude carried your asses to stardom with his songwriting on I&W and Awake.
I never thought this could happen, I'm so glad Mike is back and hope they compose some crazy music like in the very beginning of the band
Mangini is a great drummer , Mike is a great member .. wishing all the best for them all .
Mike could play Mike's old stuff pretty well. But can Mike play Mike's stuff with Dream Theater?
I think so. I'm sure he'll make his own, but yeah, no problems.
So u seriously think mangini plays train of thought songs, awake songs pretty well? Need to clean those ears
we can pretend those albums never happened and it would be fine XD
No one wants to hear that stuff anyway lol
@@xsiete25xsame!
They should have done like King Crimson and have two or three drummers. KC sounds really badass with several drummers.
new album title: A Dramatic RETURN of Events
Mike is an AMAZING gentleman!
Happiness!! ❤️
Mangini will be missed!!! I am very happy MP is back in the house, but this is all so bittersweet man...........
See ya Mike, welcome back Mike
Been waiting for this moment for 13 years
Thank God he's back! Mangini is a monster. But chops don't equal taste. NO ONE does Dream theater like Mike Portnoy. He's 100% made for that band. He plays parts and he plays the right parts for their music. Mangini could be too techinical and overplay at times. Not to discount his abilities by any means, but Portnoy cannot be outdone in DT. Prayers have been answered. Welcome back Mike Portnoy!!
Sounds great, but i just wanna know what exactly happened why they brought back portnoy? Does mangini quit the band or he was fired? Im just curious and feel bad about mangini, but also happy that portnoy is back, of course ppl wants to know what exactly happened 😉🤘
oh im sure John stabbed Mangini in the back. That seems like a Portnoy move. Johns a sell out.
@@MikeB-oo9bj Yeah, I agree. Fuck all those assholes, what creeps, doing that a bandmate. Just terrible behavior.
DT’s record sales and ticket sales were on the decline. The record company will have suggested that with a Portnoy reunion, things would get a boost, for a while. I bet is was all bui$$ness.
@@SAHBfan I see, i think that's correct, people just got bored with having mangini, and having portnoy back will make a huge impact on sales ( Album, Concert, endorsements, etc ) people would like to see portnoy back 🤘😉
Mangini is the only DT Drummer I knew, seeing that I've only started watching their live performances earlier today. 😊 He's an incredible Drummer, the whole group are Virtuosos.
I'll continue looking out for their performances so I experience the returning Drummer too.
I wanna see Portnoy playing Manginis albums.... big challenge
I hadn't even thought of that yet, but you're so right! It's going to be a delight
I don`t think that he is able to play every Mangini Song. Wanted to see him perform The Alien 😀
at 50% the most... if they ever attempt to....
I really don't mind if they don't play songs from the Mangini era. The only real good album is "Dramatic turn"
I do!@@jean-pierrestraub7530
Nice!! Love Mike Portnoy!! Welcome Home Bro!
Imagine Devin Townsend as a vocalist in dream theater 😮😮
Please let this happen!
Ufff don’t give them ideas!
I would rather see Dino Jelusick in DT.
2 vocalist why not 🎉
Can't wait to witness MP becoming Lars Ulrich when playing MM's parts..
So the band finally wrote the check! 🎸💚
Yep. JP is a sellout. Seems he's about as classless as Porkboy. I would expect the backstabbing from MP. Thought JP was better than that. Evidently no.
And James comment, "We are all where we should be." Bet Mangini doesn't think so. What a classless douchebag.
Mangini was amazing
That’s great, Mike is one of the greatest drummers 🥁 in Rock music 🎼
No he isn't.
@@jacksamunster4407 Which Mike? Yes.
Mangini of course@@sarcasticguy4311
Just a great sentiment from everyone. Good stuff.
It was always gonna happen, now it has 🤘
Thanks Mr. Mangini - we are forever grateful for your work with the band and classy departure.
Im happy, not for the drumming but for the possibility that Petrucci stops writing boring riffs
My favorite band is back!!
Mangini was great and I've been a fan since watching him with Vai in the 90s. Great dude great player but this is Portnoys home and I'm excited my fav band has reformed. Can't wait for the new album and I'm actually gonna make sure I see the show next tour.
