    I've been a Progressive Rock/Metal fan for decades. These guys are unbelievable. I've watched everything from King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Rush, and many others. Dream Theater is the most fun and impressive to watch and listen to. Just look at Myong mirror Pettruci chord by chord and the speed of both of them. Flawless playing through the entire concert. They are truly the greatest ever.

    • @jskypercussion
      @jskypercussion 2 года назад +27

      Technically impressive, but after a while it gets boring run after run and eventually becomes uninspiring to the point where there is no distinction or creativity of musicality. I have seen Dream Theater many times and always the same boredom kicks in after a while, I love technicality, but I love musicality as well. Yes, ELP and King Crimson posess both, Dream Theater never mastered the musicality department like the others have. And to me I gig them harshly on that and why to me they were never a complete perfect band. Now in terms of their technical playing, they are a perfect band, but going back to what I was saying about that fine level balance, DT is not the perfect complete Progressive band.

    • @jrgilbert
      @jrgilbert 2 года назад +20

      @@jskypercussion I couldn't disagree more. They do go off on musical tangents and for the cynical they label it self indulgence, but they have plenty of compositions that are just 'songs' if you will. I have never considered them boring. Boring to me it's today's metal where nearly every band sounds like the flavor of the day. All those progressive bands you mention...have their signature sound and style. Dream Theater managed to find their signature sound and style. I think they have a perfect mix of the technical virtuosity and the heart and soul of songs where they leave the shredding and riffing on the shelf. Some just refuse to acknowledge it. They only hear the notes open your heart along with your mind.

    Motörhead
    Slayer
    DT
    And then Maiden
    It was by the time SFAM came out.
    There I saw DT the first time live and I will never forget this experience. I was standing there jaw dropped to the floor...and after the DT set I got me a beer with a big smile on my face.

    Hey, just some stupid stuff to cheer with everyone. I'm a drummer, and I basically learned all my basics listening to Portnoy, he basically was my god in my teens. Now, here's what I really want to say.
    I just LOVE that Mike Mangini has such a "musical" respect for Portnoy that he plays HIS EXACT PART. Like, note for note. He knows fans WANT to hear specifically this, and obviously he could have made this tune his own, he's got more than enough skill to do something new and amazing with this tune. But I think he thouroughly thought about it, and ended up like "Ok, it's one of DT's signature tunes, Portnoy's hand is all over it and you know what ? I'm gonna play EXACTLY what he plays on the record". Just for that, you gotta love that dude.
