Nice catch. As a lefty drummer back in the day, ”Paicey” is one of the great lefties and a remarkable swing/rock artist. I consider myself lucky to have seen this lineup. Keyboardist John Lord was what made Purple different, playing a Hammond (B3 I think) through 2 Leslie rotating horn cabinets was amazing. The tremolo effect, sped up and slowed down, was sick. Ian Gillan was such a good singer, that in 1970 he got a very important side gig. The relatively unknown writing team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice (later became the kings of musicals) tapped Ian as the lead in the album version of Jesus Christ Superstar, their first musical blockbuster. Thanks in a large part to Gillan's presence and performance, the album went to #1 on the charts.

Because of the limitations of recording technology back then audiences were usually asked to hold their applause and reactions until the end. Also, it was just a different time back then. People were brought up not to "Interrupt" musicians. Also, I am not sure where they got the audience from. If they were not die-hard Deep Purple fans, they had probably never heard the song before, as at 9 minutes it was too long and to "out there" to get played on more than a few radio stations across the country.
