Deep Purple is one of the finest hard rock bands ever.
This is not a bunch of highschool pals, or hippies, these are five REAL MUSICIANS.
JON LORD (r.i.p. 2012) was a classical (symphonic) composer, he loved classical music and put it into the Purple soul.
RITCHIE BLACKMORE is a real MAESTRO of the guitar, but very bad temper, he never liked publicity or interviews. Maybe this is the reason that many people don't reconigze him.
IAN (Silver Throat) GILLAN is the best hard rock singer, capable to reach incredible high notes on stage every night in the 70s. Far better than Plant or Osbourne.
ROGER GLOVER is an amazing and precise bass player, also composer and producer of hard rock music.
IAN PAICE is one of the most awesome drummers of the world ever.
So here you have an amazing keyboardist, a brilliant guitarist, an extraordinary singer, a great bass player and an incredible drummer together, five overtalented musicians doing their best, on stage they were in like a friendly battle, because they wanted to show the other members that they are better, so they defy each other to play or sing better. The result, Deep Purple is like a precision machine on stage and sounds better than in the studio, also was an extraordinary show, as you have seen.
The band reformed many times, and had personnal changes but always on the top, and is still on the road now (2022). Very famous in Europe and Asia, americans don't know much about them, but Smoke on the Water.
They had influenced Van Halen, Judas Priest, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mettalica, Yngwie Malmsteem, Iron Maiden, Dio, etc.
Also original members created their own bands, like Rainbow, Whitesnake and Gillan Band.
Don't worry about the quiet audience, they were told not to move by the television company because they were filming and recording.
Try to discover more from this incredible band, full of energy and great music.
I highly recommend the tracks from MADE IN JAPAN album (1972) "Highway Star", "Strange Kind of Woman", "Lazy" "Black Night" and "Space Trucking" to understand the full Purple power.
    Have luck.

Hey man, don't sweat the pausing. It's your natural reaction, let it fly, this is intense music made by intense people. If you get this unprepared it's like a sledgehammer to the soul. I heard this first on Made in Japan from their 72? tour. I remember just losing it, no one had ever heard anything like that before. It's so good to hear it again.

You can't look at that ranked list. Ritchie Blackmore was the greatest guitarist to ever play on stage. He just wasn't like by the Rock Media because Blackmore could have care less. You have to listen to Made In Japan. It is considered by millions as the Greatest Live Album ever Recorded. It has no studio enhancements. It is perfect and the way it was played on those nights in Japan.

Hendrix was very impressed by Ritchie. Hendrix called Ritchie Mr. Speed. Ritchie has also sold Millions of Album's of Acoustic Work. He has so much more music than almost anyone in the business. It subjective but yes to me Ritchie is the greatest all around guitarist. But I am a huge Page Fan so don't get me wrong he was great. I will say this Page could play live on Heroin much better than Tommy Bolin could play on Heroin. I am just glad Page lived through it. GREAT reaction👍. The reason you have never heard of Deep Purple before, and why those band members are not on the top of any lists is because: the music industry / press have ignored them repeatedly in favour of Led Zeppelin and other acts. Deep Purple is seriously superior in musicianship and virtuosity to most other bands. But, they don't play the media game like other bands do. As such they get neglected. The lesson in all this.....Don't believe everything you read or hear in various media (radio, magazines, TV, videos) about who is the best this or that. There is lots of great music to be discovered outside of what the music media / corporate conglomerate would have you believe. And lots of other Deep Purple music to discover too because they are still writing and still touring after more than 50 years.

He was classically trained and you can easily see that in his playings.
Ritchie Blackmore also founded the Hard Rock band Rainbow in the mid-70's with their best album being the 1976: Rising.
The best known song on that album is Stargazer. Awesome opening drum and toward the middle, Blackmore shreds the guitar for several minutes.

Ritchie Blackmore hated fame, and rarely did interviews or wanted limelight. He was considered a moody character, he's actually very likable if you get his humour. He influenced bands and guitarists like Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Brian May of Queen and bands like Iron Maiden, Metalica etc. He bought classical music to rock with Rainbow. He should be No.1 on any list.

Ritchie is my favourite guitarist of all time, but I have to admit there are better technical guitarists out there. Having said that, none of those other guitarists make me FEEL music the way Blackmore does. He pushes all the right buttons for me ... or at least he did in the 1970s. I think he was the most "explosive" guitar player out there (listen to the start of Speed King, or the solos in Child In Time or I'm Alone for evidence of that), as well as one of the most creative. He's definitely UNDERRATED.

IMHO the definitive version of this song is on the Made in Japan album. It clocks in at 12:18 long, and it blows this TV version away; trust me. The ending may be the most intense 1 minute and 30 seconds of rock music ever recorded. The audience sits in stunned silence for a minute and then erupts into applause. The lyric you couldn't understand is "the bullets flying, taking toll".
When Deep Purple formed in 1968 they were impressed and influenced by Vanilla Fudge, which also featured a heavy organ sound. Ian Paice's father was a jazz musician, and you can hear how his style is jazz-influenced; especially his snare drum technique. Their first hit in England (1970) was called "Black Night". The version of that song on the expanded "Made in Japan" CD is worth checking out. Also, get a copy of the"Deep Purple at California Jam 1974" DVD to see the Mark III version of the band, especially Blackmore's antics during "Space Truckin'". They had to hurry him away from the concert site in a helicopter to keep him from getting arrested!
All the members of this band were top 10 players on their respective instruments, and I'll put them up against any of their peers any day of the week. When you see interviews with rock musicians who came after Deep Purple you will understand how well-respected these guys are by the people they influenced. Jon Lord early on realized that in order to compete with Blackmore's ferocious sound he was going to have to do something more than run his Hammond B-3 organ into Leslie cabinets, which is what you do with a B-3. That sound is timeless and one of the most important elements in good rock and R&B, but it wasn't enough. So he figured out how to run the Hammond through a stack of Marshall amplifiers, the same as Blackmore. The stunning result was what Lord called "The Beast" and he used it to good effect on stage and in the studio. Steve Morse, who replaced Blackmore in 1996, and just retired to tend to his cancer-stricken wife, was voted top guitarist in the world 5 years in a row by Guitar Player Magazine in the late '70s and early '80s as he lead the Dixie Dregs, a group of Miami University jazz program grads that played a dazzling mix of mostly instrumental jazz, rock, classical, and country music. Their albums are still available and worth checking out.
Purple is often unjustly ignored in rock history writings and by certain RUclips channels; Blackmore had a reputation for being moody and difficult, and he had little tolerance for some of the stupid questions he was asked by rock journalists. He also liked playing practical jokes on people, and he didn't try to curry favor with the rock elites or the rock press. That's why it took so long for them to be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. Blackmore refused to attend the ceremony, calling the Hall a joke. He's right.
Thanks for doing the video - I get a huge thrill watching someone getting turned on to things that I am passionate about. I have loved these guys since 1972 when I first became aware of them.

The original members of Deep Purple, like the members of Led Zeppelin, were all among the best in their respective areas as musicians. Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore were in the same group of sessions musicians. Talent wise as a band probably the only band, that I know, I could even put in that collection of across the band talent would be the "Eagles." All extremely talented musicians, and each band member took turns as lead singer, and they all had at least one song hit the charts. Of these three bands the Eagles has had the most record sales.
To be honest, those are my top 3 favorite studio bands. Led Zeppelin being my favorite, the Eagles, and then Deep Purple. However, Deep Purple is by far my favorite live band.

Band member for band member they were just as brilliant as Zeppelin. What Zeppelin had that DP lacked was one great consistent lineup, 10 years of continuity through the seventies, and a lower level of internal conflicts.

True. Zep were fortunate to have a manager who looked out for them. Purple were overworked by their management which exacerbated tensions that could've been resolved if they'd been given some time off.

Thanks for sharing your reaction to this gem. Yes, _"Child In Time"_ is a inspired by the Vietnam War (Gillan later said "the Cold War"). This live show was a British TV Show called _Deep Purple - "Doing Their Thing",_ released 21st august. The audience is quiet because the band asked for it so they wouldn't interfere with the sound on the recording. It was from hearing Ian Gillan perform this song that he was hired to do the "Jesus" part on the _"Jesus Christ Superstar"_ album recorded shortly after.

Most guitar rankings are frankly, crap.
Blackmore is one of the greats. Where he ranks is academic. Fans like myself would argue that Blackmore's influence on guitar players far outweighs any of his contemporaries, but he had a rather unfortunate habit of upsetting people across the industry. Ritchie didn't play the game. and he tends to get overlooked because he rubbed people up the wrong way.
in their day Purple sold as many records as Led Zep. They've continued to perform in a variety of lineups up until today and have never really stayed in 1 box for too long.
Gillan, Paice and Glover are still performing as DP today. Jon Lord has passed away and Ritchie quit the band decades ago.

P:D no hagas caso de las listas, (Y menos las americanas) casi todas se basan en parámetros de popularidad y no de calidad, Ritchie Blackmore tal vez sea el mejor guitarra de su generación y un grandísimo músico. I guess your an american. Zeppelin toured heavily in USA, while Deep Purple had the misfortune to have to cancel two big tours in USA due to hepatitis. When they become the largest group in the world the singer and bass player quit. Then they had 11/2 year when the guitarist quit and therefore they really didn't break America and are heavily underrated there. And radio is extremely important in America and only Smoke and a couple of other songs got good airplay, so that's why americans know so little about them.

  • @Rassskle

You never heard this before because you live in the USA.
I bet you never heard of Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham, Billy Thorpe, Cold Chisel .......
Watch Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham doing “ Something is Wrong With My Baby”...... a live version with Diesel on guitar and backing vocals ( from Hey Hey its Saturday ).
Then watch a 20 years younger Jimmy Barnes doing the live “Wild Thing” with Cold Chisel.... ( the purest FERAL rock you will ever see ).
Always live with these people.....Farnham with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra rivals the best of Pink Floyd live.
Then the American guitar legend Joe Bonamassa playing guitar for Jimmy Barnes in studio..... “ Stone Cold in Love with You”
America is just discovering this gold now, 20 to 50 years later.

Great reaction video, really enjoyed it. To answer some of the questions - Deep Purple were not as popular as Zeppelin and Sabbath in the USA but in Europe they were just as big, possibly even bigger. Every single member of the band is regarded as one of the best in rock music history. The crowd was silent because this was a TV show recording and they were instructed not to make any noise and thus keep the recording clear.

It was a tv performance and the audience would have been told to be quiet until the end of the song. The top three regarded keyboardists are Jon Lord, Reck Wakeman and Keith Emerson, Jon is my particular favourite. Purple have sold around 150 million albums, not bad for being underrated. Great performance, but the best version of this song is on the live album Made In Japan, check it out. I believe Purple to be as mighty as Zeppelin and better live. That live version of Smoke On The Water isn't great, heavily edited by the tv company. Definitely check out their live album and the albums In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, and Burn. One of the biggest differences between Purple and Zeppelin is that the latter had a fantastic manager, whereas Purple's were awful.
