This song is a masterpiece and has a very deep meaning. It was written by the guitarist John Petrucci for his father, who had cancer. Great reaction!

    Two notes.
    1. The bass player, John Myung, uses a six-string bass.
    2. The "mystery" instrument is a soprano saxophone...played by Jay Beckenstein. He's collaborated/performed with DT a couple of times.

    Yes! My favorite band!

  •  20 дней назад +2

The soprano saxophone was played by Jay Beckenstein, founding member of the jazz/fusion group Spyro Gyra. He owned the studio where this was recorded and the band asked him to play on this song.

The members of Dream Theater both individually and collectively are probably the best musicians on the planet. And that’s not a stretch. I hate “Best Lists”, but these guys are exceptional. Images and Words is maybe my all time favorite album and the entire album must be heard, but “Pull Me Under”, “Metropolis Pt. 1”, and “Surrounded” are my favorites.

This is the greatest band that ever existed, and my all-time favorite as well. Technically, this is one of their simplest songs, so you have quite a deep rabbithole to explore. This song came from their 2nd album, released in the 90's. Please check out more of their songs...if you choose "Pull Me Under," please don't use the official version...it has been shortened. I would recommend one of their true epics next, such as "Octavarium."
    God bless!!

The guitar player of Dream Theater is John Petrucci, you've also reacted to him a few times. Once with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani playing Smoke on the water, and once solo with Glasgow Kiss :)

You should really try Metropolis pt.1 - The Miracle and the Sleeper next! It is from the same album, "Images and Words" 1992, which was one of their most successful albums btw) and that was when James LaBrie (the singer) was at his PRIME!

This is your intro to Dream Theater?
Ohhhhh boy are you in for some mind-blowing music and musicianship. Not to mention some of the most beautiful guitar playing that will ever grace your ear drums.
You've got 15 albums to catch up on and they are all incredible.
This is a huge rabbit you really should dive down head first.
The sax is a soprano saxophone.

Dream Theater are a progressive metal band known for their explosive and complex tracks like - 'The Glass prison'... 'As I am' ... 'On the backs of angels'... etc. However, they also have a tender side musically because the members are also fans of bands like Journey... Queen... Pink Floyd ... The Beatles... Elton John... etc. But that tends to get overlooked for some reason...
Some of Dream Theater's ballads to enjoy:
"Hollow years" ... 'Wither' ... 'Anna Lee' ... 'Surrounded' ... 'To live forever' ... 'Along for the ride' ... 'Lifting shadows off a dream'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
"Another day" was the ballad released as a single in 1993 (from their 2nd album 'Images and words' in 1992)... It followed the success of the rock single 'Pull me under'... which became a hit on radio and MTV and the album sold gold (half million copies) in the US. They hoped that 'Another day' would potentially bring Dream Theater a female audience and boost sales of 'Images and words'.
Unfortunately, by 1993... the 90's grunge era had decimated the popularity of 80's bands and anybody that sounded like an 80's band... Dream Theater saw the single fail commercially as 90's bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Stone Temple Pilots, Candlebox, etc. took all the commercial radio airplay and MTV exposure and 'Another day' was mostly ignored.
Dream Theater released their 3rd album 'Awake' in 1994 but it sold less (About 400K in sales compared to 600K sales of 'Images and words') as 2 singles received no radio or video airplay - 'Lie'... and the ballad 'The Silent man'.

This isn’t your normal band. They are extremely musically talented. John Myung actually uses all his strings. It’s not just for show. He actually does have an 8 and a 12 string bass.
This albaum was their attempt to get radio play, but they won’t sell out so they went back to 12-18 minute average songs, which is best for us. No corporate trash like you get with 98% of most music.

Sweetheart, there’s no doubt that Dream Theater is one of the greatest bands of my generation. This band is very special to me because this band brings me back a lot of memories. I think you should check out their masterpiece and that is Octavarium. It’s a much longer song. It’s like 24 minutes long but it’s worth every minute because it is amazing.

Taken off Images and Words album which many consider a masterpiece. The spiritual overtones of their songs is heavily from their old keyboardist, Kevin Moore. My personal favorite off the album is Under a Glass Moon. But you really can't go wrong with any song.

    • @ManWithoutThePants
      @ManWithoutThePants 8 дней назад

I don't like Under a Glass Moon much. It has nice solo packed with several different techniques, but I don't think it flows very well. It's not a bad solo, it is still nice, but far from best of Petrucci's solos how the solo is built in my opinion. For example Best of Times outro solo is very nice for me. From this album I like Another Day, Take the Time and Learning to Live better. Metropolis part 1 is a bit tricky one. It's a good song, but the show off section feels a bit out of place although I have always given these guys a pass for showing their talent and have fun. Sometimes they do it more fitting way and sometimes it feels like completely separate section from the song, but I don't mind since I enjoy them showing off especially live. Dream Theater and album Awake was the reason I started playing guitar.
I'm writing novel here, but I didn't mean to pick a fight or say that liking Under the Glass Moon is wrong :). It's a good song and there are parts I really like.

I definitely recommend you "Octavarium" (live Score 2005). It's just the masterpiece and the most epic Dream Theater's song ever.
It was my favourite band for a while, but I have to admit, that when I saw them alive at Masters Of Rock Festival in 2019, I was disappointed. They are great musicians, but I think, that nowadays it is just a job for them. They didn't communicate with an audition and their performance looked cool, but... boring.
