- Welcome!
Today's video is a first time reaction to progressive metal band Dream Theater. This whole video is absolutely nuts... the musicianship is insane. Join me in watching my brain implode as I try and navigate the musical elements of a seriously crazy piece of music.
You might be wondering, why is a voice coach reacting to a non-vocal piece? Long story short, it was an accident and I have zero regrets.
If you enjoyed this video please like, sub and hit the bell (if you want to).

Thank you so much to those of you who joined me with this one. it was a crazy wild time (both experience and metre-wise). If you have a Dream Theater song-suggestion that does in fact have vocals please make your suggestions below! I am definitely keen to check out more. Such incredible musicians and intriguing, inspiring music!
Illumination theory is a great song with vocals!
“This is the Life” is a good one, or “The Looking Glass”. Not as elaborate as The Dance of Eternity, but more structured and song-like, I suppose?
some masterpieces :
Illumination Theory live boston
Breaking all illusions Live boston
The count of Tuscany live
Octavarium Live Score
The shattered fortress Live Boston
Trial of tears live
Examples of high vocal performances
Another day
Voices
Scarred
Take the time
Learning to live
Under a glass moon
And much more that you will discover :)
Cheers from Paris
In The Name Of God is a good one. Tuned to low C Harmonic Minor.
Well your title says vocal coach so.. I recommending their Under a Glass Moon from Score live concert.
The range of vocal He had there is admirable, along with the song of course.
Check it out Julia, waiting for the reaction!
Vocal Coach reacts to an Instrumental song. This is gonna be good.
Lol, yeah. I saw the song and was confused. Labrie has some pipes (ok, he does have some time periods where he's kinda rough), so didn't expect an instrumental. I'm only a minute in, so glad to hear it's going to be good.
@John Miller I mean hes not at the top of his field like the others but I would hardly call him trash.
@@danjackson1016 Hear hear, the dudes lower register and expressiveness down there is something not many can imitate.
Labrie is still very good! When i saw them, he was amazing! Age and vocal injuries have restricted him from his super high range.
It's like she's trolling 😁
"there was a time signature change..."
DT: "Bro, that's already the 14th change..."
Love watching people's reactions to this song! Watching Mike Portnoy show an explanation of about 2 minutes of this song is absolutely mind blowing!
I think this one has 19/18 time signature in the main body of the song. Original drummer Mike Portnoy broke it down alternating between 5/4, 6/8 (or 3/4) and 9/8. Math is hard!
Dream Theater are considered Progressive Metal. Basically it's a combination of genres Metal, Progressive Rock, and Melodic Rock. Also add in Classical music influences like Bach, and Mozart. They literally dance around all of these genres in each song. The Dance of Eternity is all instrumental. Pull Me Under was their MTV breakout song in 1992 (during the Grunge movement mind you), but have been a band since 1985.
There is a video of original DT drummer Mike Portnoy counting through a section of this. It's somewhere here on RUclips. What's wild is, sometimes it's a x/4 time signature (3/4, 4/4, etc) and sometimes it's x/8 or even x/16. That really trips me up trying to count through it.
"Sleepless Nights" - King Diamond live at The Fillmore
John Petrucci (gutarist) once said that if you can play this song, basically you can play any song 😁
There is a video of Mike Portnoy (the original drummer) explaining the time signatures in one of the more complex sections.
And yep, there's pretty much time signature changes almost every bar!
I swear, the first time I heard this on audio, I initially thought it was some unreleased track from Transformers, The Movie from 1986. I actually thought it was Vince DiCola playing, before I found out just who it was on the keys. Talk about an intro to Dream Theater! Blew me away then, still awes me today.
Julia, your reaction is mostly from recognising technical elements that most of us subs wouldn't have a clue about, but then do find about it when you try your absolute gosh-dangest to explain in terms that we'll understand, and for that, I for one, thank you.
PS, going to check out Snarky Puppy and Tigran Himasyan, and also Hiromi Uehara The Trio Project & Yogev Gabay and Yoel Genin (Shwesmo), whim I 'discovered' thanks to YT's search algorithms! ;)
PPS, Pony Canyon? You suck!
You should react to Dream Theatres The Count Of Tuscany
Seen them 6 times. Will see them more times most likely.
jordan rudess (keyboard) is what happens when youre admitted to juliard when youre 9 lol
Welcome to DT family
Figuring out the time signature is hard for this song because there were multiple changes (like once about every 4 seconds on average). See here for an illustrated version: ruclips.net/video/EkFNdi8gIMY/видео.html
React to pull me under please... And also they have more songs with vocals...
Watch this please!! snarky puppy lingus we like it here
It was funky jazz improvise jam session... You will like it if you hear it! 😁😁
Julia: "What time signature is this?"
Dream Theater: "All of them"
There are 128 time changes in this masterpiece. 😎
I remember seeing a RUclips video where Mike Portnoy, former Dream Theater drummer, holds up flash cards bearing the current time signature as Dance of Eternity plays. It's pretty mind-blowing and worth a search...
Great comment. Lol.
LoL
@@JediMindTrick1748 haha that video always cracks me up 😅 it is really cool!
This thumbnail is GOLD!
Definitely a beautiful shade of golden red.
I must admit I'm surprised to see Julia react to this song, not that I'm complaining I'm a huge DT fan and this is certainly one of their better songs, but it has no vocals in it.
what a compliment, from the Queen of thumbnail
Maybe its time for Julia to do The day the world breaks down Elizabeth?
Oh my gosh you should also do some Dream Theater!! You're the main vocal coach I go to for reactions (especially your Devin Townsend stuff lol) and I'd love to see you do some Dream Theater, they're my favorite band at the moment
Aaah the queen is here too☺️ i advise you to pick your DT wisely as Julia did. 🤣 Recorded vocals or instrumental songs might keep you out of quarrells😁🤘
If you haven't seen it already, look up Mike Portnoy "nightmare of Eternity" where he counts through a section with the time signatures on a chart
theres also a video where a guy beat boxes it with complete time changes that he holds up in notecards while he does it.
@@shadybrain3424 that video was one of the most entertaining and amazing videos I'd ever seen
@@shadybrain3424 Could we have a link of this ?
Truly one of Labrie’s best performances
This is harsh AF, but I can't stop laughing. :D
Its LaBrie's best talent. Knowing when to just gtfo the stage and let the boys do they thing.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
loooool :D Totally!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Julia: "What time signature even is this"
Dream Theater: Y E S
Yeah this song changes time signatures 108 times
Or "ALL Time Signatures" hehehe
Jordan … no harder
Octavarium has vocals, feels, and everything else.
+1 listen to this next
She should probably start with a shorter song like Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.
If she reacts to Octavarium, probably we gonna have a One hour vid
"Octavarium" and "Illumination Theory" are both pretty intense vocally while also being insane musically. (But nothing beats Dance of Eternity for Time Signature theatrics... you can find videos of people counting it out... constantly changing.)
Please do Octavarium!!!
The time signature changes 108 times in this song. Incredible band
"You might be wondering, why is a voice coach reacting to a non-vocal piece? Long story short, it was an accident and I have zero regrets." - I love this so much lol!
The Count of Tuscany by them has vocals in it, highly recommend it
AGREED
A Rite of Passage, Nightmare to Remember as well are great songs on that album.
My best from DT
Defo!
most of that album is amazing. it was such a relief when it came out, I was worried it wouldn't be as good as it was.
This song lyrics written by John Myung hit you in the heart.
Yeah, he only writes a song every few albums, but damn are they deep.
@@Kylora2112 Stream of Consciousness is the best of him by far.
Jokes aside he wrote Learning to Live
Well, "The Dance of Eternity" is just on portion of the Concept album Metropolis Pt II, which you might as well say is one 77 minute long song. So you basically just listened to the bridge.
The album has two acts with Home kicking things off for the 2nd one.
Jordan Rudess, the key player, was admitted to the Juilliard school of music at age 9, so it's no wonder his scales and arpeggios are SO DANG CLEAN ;-)
...and 40 years later he still practices for hours every darn day God sends on earth...
@@lanreb920 the truly great ones never stop practicing. While you obviously have to have some inante talent to get to the virtuosic level, the rest is sweat and time. God bless him, Doc Svereinsen is 93 and he still practices at least 45 minutes to an hour every day.
Not only did he get in at 9, he was famous enough for it that he was featured in bandaid commercials for doing things that would make your fingers bleed.
....he also has the support of Steinway and Kerzweil. It helps a little with extra 'custom tools' they've provided him.
Minus the singer, the rest of the band went to Berklee College of Music with the 2nd drummer being a former teacher at Berklee.
John Myung is one of the greatest bassists of all time.
I saw them live twice and both times I was most impressed by John Myung's playing. I am a bass player and I've always known how incredible he is. But to see him play live completely blew me away.
They play progressive metal, it's basically a mix between seventies prog rock and heavy metal. It's a sort of musical crossover :)
One of the giants of the genre!
They are basically the foundation of the subgenre of metal: Progressive Metal.
@@Ktulured55 Queensryche *cough*
@@lakejizzio7777 Fates Warning cough.
This is what happens when every member of the band went to Berklee
i believe it... this has in-depth intellectual music study written all over it's many many many meter changes.
😂🤘🏼
Jordan's Julliard isn't he? Not that it changes anything :)
@@mndoci Yep. Accepted at age 9 I believe
John Petrucci and John Myung went to Berklee. Mike Mangini taught at Berklee before getting the DT gig, and Jordan Rudess went to Juliard.
Dream Theater is, without question, the greaterst, most talented prog metal band that ever existed. I am happy that you started listening to them Julia! You are at the beginning of an incredable journey. :)
Under a Glass Moon live in Tokyo 1993 is some of Dream Theater's best live stuff you'll hear. Back before poor James Labrie lost his voice. Also, one of the best metal guitar solos you'll ever hear.
"You might be wondering, why is a voice coach reacting to a non-vocal piece?" - I mean, that's how I prefer Dream Theater at this point after listening to them a LOT for decades, so...
maybe one of the LTE 1 2 or 3 could be another 1st time hearing of Julia
@Crabuki James certainly has had many issues with his voice for the past decade or so. To be fair to him, he always sounds top notch on studio recordings though, and in recent years his live performances have also improved significantly but it's still a bit hit or miss with him. Honestly though, I would love to hear Julia's take on some of his not-so-great live performances followed by a rant on vocal health.
@@RudyBleeker Yeah, he's a talented singer and, at least the one time I've talked to him, extremely nice. It's not that he isn't good - he is. It's that the players around him are absolute monsters of modern music, and he's not, so it just feels vaguely jarring even after listening to them for all these years.
Hear, hear! James LaBrie is supernice, but imho his live vocals leave something to be desired. His studio performance is always perfectly fine. No complains there. Now, whether or not one likes his timbre, is a completely different and subjective matter.
@@PlugInKali Love his additions to Ayreon, and the Mullmuzzler album was pretty good as well.
Gotta admit I was curious to see how this was going to turn out...really, REALLY glad you were able to appreciate my favorite band of all time, even without having vocals to listen to! As I'm sure someone has already told you, this song is found in the middle of one of the greatest concept albums of ALL TIME, and it serves as a bridge between two excellent songs that actually HAVE vocals.
If you would like a taste of DT with vocals, but only a small taste, I'd recommend "Wait For Sleep"...it's a very short song, but very beautiful. Dream Theater is progressive metal music, and as such, many of their songs tend to be rather long (to some people). I would personally recommend one of their epic masterpieces, such as "The Count of Tuscany" (my personal favorite), "Octavarium," "Illumination Theory", or "A Change of Seasons." Whatever you choose to listen to next, please know that their musicianship is always at God Level...they are the absolute best at what they do.
Here's an outside the box thought...perhaps you might do another joint reaction with Chase? I believe he has yet to discover this band, and it would be fun to watch BOTH of your minds get blown simultaneously!
God bless!!
I was just coming down to the comments section to ask Julia to do more DT as I'm a huge fan, and came across this absolute gemstone - I genuinely think you managed to nail everything I wanted to say perfectly. Like EVERYTHING you said I completely agree with (and yes The Count of Tuscany is their best song and no I don't care if people think it's A Change of Seasons or Octavarium) and hope Julia takes this into account because more DT, especially along the lines mentioned above and extra especially with Chase reacting too, would be amazing!!!
@@henrychipperfield8359 ...thank you for the compliment!
I second whatever you said.
You should check out Rush, Dream Theater's main influence and one of the most amazing and versatile bands ever
Based on today's reaction, it has to be YYZ :D
This is also the first time I heard this song, and right there at the end, I thought I heard something that reminded me a lot of a Rush riff.
Would Julia be able to 'appreciate' Geddy's voice? (Grin)
@@11mandylion nah, La Villa Strangiato. :P
@@killermonjero I know the part you're mentioning, and they've actually called it "the Rush section."
Vocal Coach reacts to a song with no vocals. (Probability for the best though, LaBrie isn't my favorite singer. He has his moments however.)
The rest of the album is just amazing as well, and all the songs tell one story. Its worth a listen for sure.
They have one song that might suit with your point of view, the title is "octavarium", u will understand the band and their music just by hearing that one
You could start with "Illumination Theory", or "Breaking All Illusions", both Live at the Boston Opera, or you could react to "The Count of Tuscany"... all of them are master pieces (and there's singing!!). For a longer exposure to this fabulous band... the whole album "Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes From a Memory" is an awesome concept album, or "Octavarium" which, for me, is their best song until today... but anything you choose from them is good material. These guys are one of the few bands remaining where everyone involved is a virtuoso in his specialty...
Yup. What he said. Also want to throw Learning to Live in the mix.
True. That 'Scenes from New York' dvd made me love this band!
100% agree with the breaking all illusions pick. Amazing song and amazing live performance
All of the above are great suggestions, though I'd recommend building up to "Octavarium". Octavarium is arguably their best track ever as @Joan Vilariño said, but it's incredibly dense. You could also try "Pull Me Under" if you want their one mass-market hit (it's still a 7-ish minute Dream Theater epic, but it got massive radio and MTV play back when it came out).
Instrumedledy is a fantastic look at their musicality.
There are 108 different time signature changes in this song. Dream Theater is a Progressive metal band.
do you mean 108 changes between signatures. because there aren't 108 different ones.
@@krusher74 What I meant to say is that there are 108 time signature changes in that song.
@david putterman you said it right there first time. I mean they could go back and forth between only 2 different signatures and still change between those 2 108 times. And technically there are an almost limitless number of time signatures that could be created... like no one may play in 11:10 but that does not mean that it does not exist. 😜
Should we introduce Julia to Ayreon "The Day That the World Breaks Down" or is it too early? ;)
Only way to go into prog is all way in. All or nothing
The druids from ayreon is great too damian is a great singer saw it live
He made my cry
Honestly there are so many excellent choices from Ayreon, I want someone to react to like...the whole album? And not just one album, like almost all of them? That's what I want.
anyway, as much as I love DT and this song specifically, I think this can be fully appreciated by musicians only. Last concert I've been in Rome I was quite sure everybody in the hall was in a band, and when Dance of Eternity main melody started I was so happy to join everyone singing ("po-po-po-po...") perfectly in time like it was the last summer pop success. Purely love for music...
I think that’s the case for a lot of their music
I like how they make an effort to show you what they're doing, like that split screen shot with 4 musicians simultaneously.
Wish more people would take the time and appreciate the music that DT has provided us over a span of 3 decades.
Unfortunately they are just too much for a casual listener. I was introduced to Dream Theater by a musician and have found most people who know them, are musicians.
@@stevenwilliams1805 And/or math nerds or either Rush or Yes fans
"take the time", smooth
Well, "2 decades" is more accurate. After Octavarium, they started recycling.
@@stevenwilliams1805 But don’t you think it’s consequently a bit onanistic? It’s like they’re playing primarily for themselves, but secondarily for an elite group of people who are musically switched on enough to “get” their music. It seems to me this is the essence of pretentiousness.
Your face. Priceless. 😆
I know their music so well that I wondered why you were doing an instrumental. And then the thought: She doesn't know!!!
😄💗
Already want to suggest your next DT reaction: Illumination Theory, live from the Boston Opera House. One of their best live recorded performance in years.
i second this
Yes, please...
Third
I would absolutely suggest this as your first vocal Dream Theater performance.
I concur
My first thought when I saw this video was "oh nice, an instrumental reaction!"
Then I laughed when you were wondering if there was vocals. Loved your blind reactions.
A band that is in the same genre as DT but has more singing in it is Symphony X, with Accolade pt. 2 and Paradise Lost being two of their best songs.
For songs with vocals I highly recommend the songs from the Twelve-Step Suite : The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root Of All Evil, Repentance and The Shattered Fortress. All five of them are absolute masterpieces !
I already know this is going to be good. I hope you will do more DT.
For DT with vocals, I would chose something from old times, like Metropolis pt 1, Strange Deja Vu or The Spirit Carries On.
Oh, also, they covered "Stargazer" from Rainbow (and Ronnie James Dio) - oops, wrong reactor XD @The Charismatic Voice
"The Spirit Carries On" is a pick I'd very much agree with. James has a gift for expressing warmth and empathy, and as a result he's an exceptional ballad singer.
Or Under a Glass moon from Japan 1993
Strange deja vu shows more of the singer's range and styles.
>The Spirit Carries On
It's a good answer to Pink Floyd's "Eclipse"
Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons next would be great :)
I listened to so much Dream Theater while attending music high school. I played the whole A Change of Seasons for my 3rd year exams on drums.
I’ve listened to that song so many times that I’ve memorized the drum pattern and I’m not a drummer 😂
"Pull me under" is a must for anyone getting into Dream Theater.
Agreed! It was one of my first pieces, and although it hasn't stuck with me as strongly as Panic Attack, which was my very first DT track, the chorus is still in my head to this day. Not that you'll find me complaining lmao
@@themorrigan1312 Yes, "Pull me under Pull me under Im not afraid!" THat chorus went through my head when i first saw this.
IT is their "One Hit" and she'll probably like it. Yet it is what people usually react to. I'd love to see her do "A Change of Seasons"
@@futurewavecs Me too! As a life long drummer, that is one of my favorite songs to play. So much fun. Portnoy was/is a genius. I'd love to see her reaction to Change of Seasons.
No, that is perhaps the only MTV hit they had. It might have catapulted them, but not worthy of a reaction. Change of Seasons!
need to do other Dream Theater songs like WITHER or ANOTHER DAY
She hasn't even heard LaBrie yet.
Listen to constant motion from the systematic chaos album!
Her mind will be blown when she gets some Labrie in that mix!!!
or Labrie's performance in Octavarium
@John Miller You're a devoted Labrie hater, this is like 4th comment i see from you in the same vein.
@@kookoo9235 well tbh Labrie surely is DT’s weak link. Not that Dominici was any better lmao
You should go back to their beginnings… I highly recommend “Another Day”. It’s a very relaxing and uplifting song. Then “Pull Me Under” is the song that hooked me and made me a fan! As always, I absolutely love your reactions, they are also uplifting 🥰 and educational. I look forward to the next! Have an awesome day! 😁
YES! More of this sort of thing! It's a bit long, but Octavarium would be a rad one to have a listen to. Root of all evil is probably a bit more realistic haha
This was also MY first exposure to DT. I knew of them and I had heard James LaBrie's voice in Ayreon, but I had no idea. My Lord! This was extraordinary!
crazy good right?
Voice or no voice, we love you, Julia. You could probably react to pure silence and we'll comment, fave, like, subscribe and share. :)
Lyrics by John Myung
On the backs of angels is a great vocal piece by them
Epic musicianship from all the members. Great band, especially live.
They have a singer too
Wow! I just mentioned a couple of days ago in her community post that Dream Theater is one of the three metal bands that influenced my metal journey the most and lo and behold she'll be reacting to it for the first time tomorrow!! Btw, I'm really glad you enjoyed it despite being an accident 😉 I happen to be one of those people who is not a huge fan of James LaBrie's vocals (specially live) but he has many fans so I guess you'll have to judge by yourself in the future.
The music is so good in spite of LaBrie, IMO
Just make sure to check out his performances from before his vocal cords got messed up.
It's impressive that he ever managed to sing again after but his voice is definitely noticeably different live after that.
Dance of Eternity is almost like the intro for the next song on the album. I HIGHLY recommend listening to the whole album from start to finish.
Me too! Technically the album is 1 song, so it should be listened that way and this 'track' is only a piece of the song.
Oh my god, kudos to whoever it is that convinced you to watch this 🥳🥳🥳. Some channels (I think even Chase's) do not react to Dream Theater because I think they can be annoying with copyright, but in my opinion, they are totally worth it!
At 5:00 the time signatures go 4/4, 7/8, 3/4, 7/8, then repeat. Not too complicated when you listen to it 10,000 times lol
the young conductor (Eren Basbug) is from the Turkish youth symphony and is friends with Jordan, who is himself a Julliard prodigy from age 9!
Dream Theater was my introduction to prog metal, and what an intro!
As songs with actual lyrics in it, there are a lot of pearls in there.
For me, I have soft spots for Panic Attack, Constant Motion and Dark Eternal Night.
Have fun in this deep interesting crazy rabbit hole Julia, hope to see another DT reaction soon :)
You really should do "A Change of Seasons - The Crimson Sunrise / Innocence / Carpe Diem / The Darkest of Winters / Another World / The Inevitable Summer / The Crimson Sunset · Dream Theater" This is all in one tune, is very long, but you will have no regrets.
Fun fact: When Mike Portnoy (Original Drummer) left the band, Dream Theatre had to hold auditions with the TOP/BEST drummers in the world to see who could play their songs & also be able to create masterpieces.
They filmed it all & you can see it on RUclips.
And in the end the Boston and Berklee School of Music connection stayed in tact..Mike being from the area, former drummer of Boston based band Extreme and a Percussion teacher at Berklee.
I can’t believe 162K views, 7K likes. She was brilliant, and DT was, as usual, brilliant. Was no one listening?
DT music is simply too complex / hard listening for majority of the people.
@@MikkoRantalainen Ah, Ty.

This will be a rollercoaster so, buckle up!!!
Julia, I recommend "Endless Sacrifice" from Dream Theater so that you get to meet James LaBrie, DT's vocalist. :) Love your videos! I subscribed!
I second this.
I third this
I'd recommend "Pull Me Under" or "Panic Attack." "Change of Seasons" is another great one, but it's 23 minutes long.
ACoS lyrics written by Mike Portnoy, recalling the day his mum died in a plane crash if I remember correctly?
@@tonycannon1968 yes you remember correctly
A critic who reviewed the studio album this came from said the band had packed so much material into it that you could listen to it a hundred times and still find new things every time.
Check out all of "Scenes from a memory", which this song is a part of...its a brilliant murder mystery involving reincarnation. This album is probably in my opinion, the lead singers masterpiece. He is singing for multiple characters and the all emotions...its spectacular.....read the lyrics from album jacket because it gives you the character changes. Saw it live at Celebrity Theater in phoenix in 2001!
Agreed 100%.
"this key player, what even is a key signature?" whole of Dream Theater - whats a time signature?
So DT has been plying this for years and have it perfected. I can't help but wonder what went through the orchestra musicians minds the first time they saw the craziness! Hats off to the conductor who was able to keep up and made the orchestra blend perfectly with DT!
Not worse than Stravinski, for example. Still a bit of a challenge, but this sort of thing is easier with sheet music to read.
Thank you Julia! This one made me smile. Dream Theater is the ultimate musician's band. I do hope you continue your journey with them.
First time I watch you:
I've enjoyed the way you talk about what you're discover, or just use the screen to explain us what's in your mind over that period of time. i.e: When you wrote that your brain couldn't follow what's next was superb.
You should listen to "Metropolis pt. 2, Scenes from a Memory" from the beginning. It is an excellent album, from that time they started to make Conceptual albums, almost without pauses.
Despite all the changes the album has, also it has an incredible relaxing effect, so listen it when you lay on your bed and you probably are going to be relaxed and you'll fall asleep. Personally, I had to listen twice because I just felt the beginning to the second or third song, a cut in the middle, and the final effect at the end the first time I listened and then I said to myself "what the...?" I played again to rediscover that album, that time consciously.
Regards from me, in Chile. Good video.
Yeah, this was bounces around time signatures like they’re girlfriends of an elementary school boy.
If you want a Dream Theater song with singing, check out Fatal Tragedy.
I like sentences that begin with "long story short".
I recommend you listen to The Best of Times and Instrumedley, they are two wonderful songs from them
Me after watch this video... 🤯
How is it possible that I hadn't heard anything from them before?
Its all about sharing music and bands and enhancing creativity.. have fun listening to DT \m/
@ Julia Nilon, thanks analyzing the band that inspired me to delve further into music theory and to excell in Death metal intricate odd time rhythms in my guitar playing.
The Dance of Eternity is overwhelming in so many ways. A true masterpiece
It's the best DT piece you could choose for a reaction (since you're jaaazzzzzz). Still I hope you'll get to James Labrie vocals eventually... I can't remember you seeing that badass Ayreon piece every vocal coach in the universe reacted, but Labrie is also the first singer on that track. I myself have mixed feelings about him. I usually don't quite like him on DT albums but I really admire his performances in Ayreon... go figure! It would be interesting to know your opinion about him.
p.s. Also I love how this piece ends on half-cadence. There's an explanation to that: it's actually just a segment of the epic 'Metropolis pt.II' and there should be another part after it.
I started to listen to Snarky Puppy and Tigran Hamasyan a few years after I came across Dream Theater. I'd love to watch your reaction to them as well!
Snarky Puppy and Tigran go hard with the musicianship as well. Could be fun to do a joint reaction with a musician for it :)
My neck hurts after everytime I listen to pull me under. One of those roll your head off your neck kinda head bangers lol
Next year that album is 30 years old!........
Been listening to Dream Theater for almost 30 years. There's singing. This is progressive rock.
Progressive Metal. Though... many times they are a little lighter... metal can be lighter.. they are the kings of progressive metal.
HA, someone hoodwinked Julia! 😛 Epic! Here's some songs _with_ vocals (I promise) worth you digging into: *"Wait For Sleep,"* *"Untethered Angel,"* *"Scarred,"* *"The Ministry of Lost Souls,"* *"Anna Lee,"* "Surrounded,"* *"The Answer Lies Within,"* and *"Wither."* (Note: Not all of what I listed are "hits." And I don't bloody care. This shows their range and versatility, _with_ vocals!)
And to answer Caption Julia's question: some of us guitar-isicians and fans of DT's have been getting lost for years playing their music! The struggle is real. ☠🤓
The song right before this on the album is really good, it's called "Home".
This style of rock or metal is called progressive, Drean teather is one of the greatest exponents in this style of music, they mix many styles, sounds etc. They are simply impressive.
Hahahah omg Julia its an on point place to start breaking DT down, which has one of the most controversial vocals of mainstream metal bands😄 cant wait to see this😊🤘
Wow!!! I have never heard of the group but once again you've expanded my musical experience - knowingly or not (smile). This was fantastic and I too enjoyed this. So, thank you. Your reactions are also a fun part of this. Stay well and I'll keep looking and listening to what you have in the future.
Please react to Pain of Salvation "Beyond The Pale" from Remedy Lane live (Progpower USA 2014), "Iter Impius and Martius Nauticus II" from BE - Live
They are insanely good musicians and all great singers.
It will be 6am when this premiere start... I promise I will be here for it !! 😉
6am! Oh my goodness!
See you there :)
@@jvoxfox LOL, 6am is a Dream Theater song!
People "Voice coaches only care about the vocals"
Julia "Hold my mic"
🤣🤣
I understand it was an accident, but this instrumental probably blew your mind anyway. Those infinite time signature changes are ridiculous and of course the musicianship of all the members is just insane.
I strongly reccomend you to check out (in your own time probably) the entire album it's part of, called "Scenes From a Memory", which is a concept album with a pretty cool mistery/crime story. IMO the best Dream Theater has ever produced.
Yeah, make this happen. Best album ever.
This is from Metropolis pt. 2, the album in its entirety is played on Live Scenes from New York in 2001. The entire band, including the vocalist (who very much has good and bad days at this point) is on fire. It's a concept album so hard to pick just one thing, but think you'd enjoy it! Change of Seasons, Voices + The Silent Man, and Learning to Live from the same live set are also great choices to react to with vocals.
Live Scenes from NY is the best of both worlds really. You get the concept album in full and you also get the vocalists (since LaBrie isn't the only one) in a proper live setting. Well worth anyone's time to explore
First and foremost. most people writing listening to let say Prince for the first time clearly has listen to him before the reaction they give is yeah ive heard this before but you the reaction to Jordan *key player* was genuine so welcome to the world of true lagends.
2:nd Dream theater is everything BUT bad, they have calm/upbeat/progressive and for the biggest point TRUE legends.
ALSO you next video of this group MUST BE Hollow years live at budokan
