I could listen to Julia explain music 24/7. I adore how emotionally invested she gets when absorbing a new piece. I get pulled along by her excitement, by her pure enjoyment. I get so much more out of the song than I otherwise would have. It’s like watching a world class sports announcer giving play by play of a game. You not only enjoy the game, but you get special insight into the plays, the players, the coaching, etc. It just makes for a great experience for someone who isn’t as well versed but who already enjoys what they’re watching/listening to even without the added bonus of the expert. Great, great stuff every single time. Thank you Julia! Appreciate it!
I agree. I'd also like to see/hear the bloopers. Editing Julia cuts herself a lot, so I'm guessing there's a lot of bloopers. And I love seeing blooper videos :) But I'd also enjoy listening to Julia talking about music, music styles and music analysis 24/7.
Peter does some amazing arrangements, often times with hundreds of layered voice tracks. Truly remarkable what he manages to pull off. Also, heads up - Peter does watch reactions. So you may see him pop up in the comments at some point!
Both Tim and Peter are blessed with wide vocal ranges and when they flex their talents with these layered harmonies, it is magic. Hard to believe they were not even on the same land mass when they recorded this video. Peter joins Home Free for a delightful few songs I can heartily suggest you check out as well.
Peter's and Tim's voices are such a match for each other. You might also enjoy their rendition of Song of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Greensleeves. Peter collaborating with Home Free on Amazing Grace is also special.
If you liked Peter and Tim, then you should look at Peter and Avi doing “Black is the Colour” because the arrangement is beautiful and something about the chord choices is both amazing and unsettling(?) and I need an expert to explain to me why that’s so.
That’s because it’s a growl (aka dragon breath) rather than a subharmonic. The impressive part isn’t how low it is; growls are actually pretty easy. Tim is amazing because of how incredibly long he can sustain them.
I've been listening to Peter Hollens for years; his amazing arrangements, and 5 octave range are out of this world! It was through him that I found out about Tim Foust's wonderful voice, and am now a huge 'fan' of Home Free! I've always adored everything LOTR since I read (devoured) the books in my childhood..obviously the films are my favourites of all time! So this collab. is heart-breakingly glorious on all fronts! A great reaction, thank you! 💓💓💓
Totally agree with above request....I think you'll love the "surprise" that goes along with this song. Makes it even more amazing!! Love your reactions!!
Love you Julia! Really glad you reacted to my faves Tim and Peter. Another great recent performance is Peter with Home Free doing U2's Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For.
Besides his amazing tenor, Peter is an absolute master at arranging and layering. I really hope to see more of him on your channel :) Besides this one, there's a collab with Avi Kaplan on Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair. But most impressive, imo, is his collab with Home Free and over 100 patrons, doing U2's I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. Thanks for this Julia...not only entertaining, but very informative, too. I love reactors (and unfortunately there are only a few) such as yourself who really know music and explain some of the technical stuff...it lets me better understand why I like something.
Tim have said the name but I'm not sure about the name, I know he have been in a group called "the blue Jupiter". But I don't know if it was that one that they were in at the same time. Tim have been in Home Free for... is it 6 or 8 years? And it was even some years before that. So it's about 10 to 15 years ago.
I'm pretty sure it was Ball in the House, based in Boston, that Peter was part of at the same time as Tim. Blue Jupiter was the first acapella group Tim joined, when he gave up studying to be a dentist to do music full time. But if I've got that wrong, someone please correct me.
WooHooo!!!! my one of my favorite reactors and one of my favorite youtube clips. Seriously Julia you have some of the best production values in your videos, you don't step all over the music, the technical aspects you point out help me appreciate the performances I already enjoy in a different light. Delightful as always.
Great reaction! Peter is a master of layering voices. He’s done many collaborations with Tim and a couple with Home Free too. This is my favorite though and if you look at the screen again when Tim hits the last note you’ll see the camera shake. Pretty cool. Try Sound of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Greensleeves and Fire and Rain by them. Peter does have an amazing voice as does Tim. Glad you liked it!
I know when something grabs my musical interest... Julia explains the "why" very well, with examples I can follow. Thanks Julia, for reaction and voice lesson both.
This is the best bass voice I have heard in decades. And the other singers are special also. I am so impressed. What do you think??? Great harmonies. Great video. Great contrast in notes. I so enjoy great vocals. I have since middle school. I was in choir in middle and high school. We had some good singers. Not at this level. These men are vocal studs. The harmonies are mind blowing... The ladies are doing quite well also. SPECIAL......... This bass just melts my head. He gets down on the bottom note and lives there. As always thank you for sharing with us. I am not familiar with these artists. To say I am impressed is an understatement. Good stuff, good, good.
The fact that you referred to it as a "fire drake" put such a big smile on my face! Haha! Also when I saw the film in the cinema for the first time, with those big bassy speakers this song gave me chills
Great job with your reaction and analysis of Misty Mountains from Peter Hollens and Feat Tim Foust . Julia in this video your fans can see the chills going through your Hole Body.
These two blend so well together. Peter's voice puts you on a cloud and leads you through this beautiful vocal journey and Tim, his bass resonates every molecule in your body. 🤤🤤🤤
I love the fact that you are educated in your reaction and that passion and excitement for the art these people perform manifests from you through the screen. I would love to see your reaction to Chris Stapleton, Tennessee Whiskey live!
I really enjoy your careful and thoughtful explanations of the technical side of singing. We often forget that singing at this kind of level requires physical training and endurance, the same as with professional athletes. Listening to your explanations has really helped my understanding and appreciation of singers' performances. But I also love seeing you being caught up and fully captured by a performance, when you go from analytic to simply enjoying. Music is a powerful magnet, isn't it? Some performances, some songs, simply pull you in and won't let you go and when they do we're often standing with tears on our cheeks wishing that it would just keep going.
You should react to some of the collaborations with Peter and Home Free. They are totally amazing. Amazing Grace, I still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, etc. And Peter and Tim have several collaborations also. Love your reactions!!
Great reaction , this song is relaxing , transports u to middle earth . Your face at Tim’s end low note lol . Ps love your hair colour. And your hair colour with a white background, black top, orange pillow , I love the contrast this creates . Quite a pretty picture 😊
Julia, I read somewhere that Peter had somewhere in the neighborhood of 120 tracks layered in this video (all aCapella), not sure how many layers Tim had. They filmed in two different woodland areas and Peter and/or his people put it all together. Peter also has a great double solo with Avi Kaplan "Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair" that is also pretty awesome.
Honestly, you do such good reviews. This would indeed be a grand start to a peter hollens journey. The guy is really good. I usually prefer just his musical arrangements over the visual of most of his videos, though. Thanks for the great blind-react ^_^
Peter has a beautiful voice in several registers & he works very well with multiple singers. I love the dissonance, I'm new to the dischordant timbres, perhaps since the advent of this group of accapella singing groups.
Thank you for doing this reaction video. I have been wanting you to "Misty Mountain" for a long time. I know your love for low notes. Just to let you know, Tim Foust vocal range is G0-A5 and Peter Hollens is G#2-A5. As a side note, I had the honor to visit your country. (Sidney) Beautiful country and beautiful people. I'm from USA.
The tonal shifts start you down in the deep caverns with Tim, feeling the moist air around you...then Peter comes in with the higher tone and lifts you up into the forest....utter beauty.
Hi Julia - fellow Aussie here: I don't remember where I read / heard it, but that last note wasn't a sub - it was Tim's famous sustainable growl. I wish I had kept up my singing - as a young'un, 30+ years ago, I once hit an A natural below low C (as a 17-year-old), now I'm lucky to get anywhere near a low C. Love your reactions - the head shivers, and eye-rolls especially with low notes. Us fellas really like how we can affect women with the low rumbling notes :-)
Aww. And here thought you'd finally found your 'I know I'm supposed to pause and exalt this wonderful piece, but it's so good that I can't disrespect it with a pause!' song XD. Wonderful reaction as always. thank you so much.
One person I haven't seen you react to is the amazing Dan Vasc. His range is incredible and he could pretty much sing the phone book and make it sound incredible. He does a metal version of this song and takes it to new places. Keep up the brilliant reactions.
This was filmed with Peter in Oregon and Tim in the Cayman Islands. Pretty spectacular arranging, don’t you think? Peter said once that he laid 120 tracks when he did this as a “solo”.
Julia, as Dimash has a range between 6 & 7 Octaves Tim has a range of 5. PLEASE react to Home Free Your Man but specifically the one from their Crazy Life Tour. In that one Tim plays around with his range from High to low and then from low to higher. He ends up clearly rattling speakers at the very end. By the way, Peter also sings other songs with Tim & he sings Amazing Grace with all of Home Free.
I loved your reaction to this song. Well Done! It sounds perfect for one of Peter Jackson's fantasy movies. It sounded like a Gregorian Chant to my ears. I guess you could call it medieval.
As an admitted sucker for pretty redheads, I find you not only pleasant to watch, but your insights into the music you hear is quite refreshing. Keep up the good work Girlie. I enjoy watching you ply your craft...
Sat down for my lunch break and decided to see what I could find on YT while I ate. Saw this and immediately clicked. I love Peter Hollens reactions in general but I also really enjoy your reactions, so this was a no brainer. Peter's whole Middle Earth album is amazing. I actually prefer his version of "I See Fire" over Sheeran's, which I'm sure is something noone would ever think someone would say. His collab with Hank Green for the "Hobbit Drinking Medley" (especially the video) is great. I also will toss in my vote for checking out his collab with Avi on "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair" which is an old folk song and probably one of my favorites of Peter's. He has several really good collabs with Lindsey Stirling as well. His version of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is excellent. He has a version of "Carol of the Bells" featuring a ton of people ranging from a children's choir to his college a cappella group and others, I think something like 300+ people. The video for "Grown Up Christmas List" is absolutely adorable featuring his wife's vocals. The song is great, but the video always brings both a smile and tears. Peter really is a great and nice guy. If you're in the mood for something a bit spooky, the video for his collab with Bailey Polkman for the "Spooky Halloween Mashup" which is a really great mashup of Come Little Children (from Hocus Pocus) and Hanging Tree (Hunger Games) and the video is just really pulls off a disturbing vibe. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the "Disney Villains Medley" with Whitney Avalon which is spectacular. Peter has a wide repertoire and all of it is good. I'm always so excited when I find someone that's just discovering him. Somehow not as many people seem to react to him despite how great his arrangements and layering tends to be. Sorry for rambling there, I got a bit excited seeing you discovering Peter. :)
Your face reads like a book when you are really feeling the emotions of the piece. It makes it clear that you are genuine in your reactions, which makes me feel better because my face does the same thing. It's nice to not be alone in that 🙂👍
Peter IS the master of layering and stacking. I love the costuming, background and videography. So vary medieval and appropriate for this song. And Tim's serious stare just drills right into your soul. And speaking of medieval, lets talk dragons. If a dragon could speak or sing, he would sound just like Tim. I love it!!
It's been said in a number of comments here already, but Julia, ya just GOTTA react to the Peter Hollens & Home Free collaboration cover of U2's "I still haven’t found what I’m looking for". Not only is it wonderful from the perspective of the vocals, but the leveling & equalization of SOOO many varied sources is a truly masterful accomplishment of Sound Engineering.
So when Tim gets to about a G1 and below, he does a thing called a vocal growl (or called firebreathing). Basically instead of using his vocal chords to make the sound, he uses the false cords which (If I remember correctly) is part of the supporting muscles in the vocal folds. It is the same things that move when you cough, and activating them is like going from guitar strings to bass guitar strings. Much thicker, same vibration, much lower.
Peter Hollens does awesome arrangements....he did a duet per se with Avi Kaplan....Black is the color of my true love hair....jaw dropping! New subscriber! Keep up the great work! Sue
I love the way you mix pure emotional reaction with professional analysis. Tim is out of this world and Peter arrangements and voice is alwasys stunning. maybe, if you like to let yourself be entranced, you should give Wardruna, "Lyfjaberg" (anything from wardruna, you cant go wrong with them) a try or if you want to stay with bass voices, Avi Kaplan soloprojects "Change on the rise" or - my favourite "Otherside"- this is exactly that.
I got to hear this the first time as I watched you hear it for the first time. Very cool... 😎 Just a thought on the comments you made concerning how the higher backing "stacks" were more predominant during part of the song, then the lower while mid range and lower vocal "stacks" became louder as the upper mid and highs faded a bit. I noticed that this was in concurrence with the transition of the "solo" voice from lower range to higher range frequencies. As a mixing engineer, I recognize this as a technique called frequency notching. Many times this is done using EQ, but it can also be done by adjusting levels as the song progresses. It simply involves lowering the levels of instruments, (or :stacks" of vocals in this case), that are in a frequency range being used simultaneously by the "lead" instrument so they leave room for the "lead" instrument to remain "on top" of the mix. When you have 2 or more instruments competing to use similar frequencies, the louder instrument will cover up or "mask" the quieter one, hence the mixing problem of "frequency masking". I think what you have picked up on is not so much a function of the performers as it is a piece of clever mixing done by said engineers. Just my opinion on that one, but I have done this kind of thing in almost every mix I have ever done. The more instruments in the mix, the more this technique can be used. Now I did notice that when he, the soloist at that point, went into the higher register, the high harmonies disappeared from the arrangement completely. That I believe is the work of a very knowledgeable arranger and expertly sung by the performers. This eliminates the need for the mix engineer to fix anything, and gives another example of the brilliance of this piece. Anyway, I loved that you loved this piece as much as I did... 😊 P.S I loved the 2 full chords at the end, and Tim's final note.... wow.
Amazing reaction!!!! I would love to see more Peter Hollens! His Interpretation of "The Song of Durin" is outstanding with an amazong range 🔥🙃 you might give it a try
Flabbergasted Julia is intensely fun to watch. It really helps Peters arrangements when the two voices have 5+ octave ranges. He has said he has blended as many as 1056 different tracks per vocalist on his songs.
Peter Hollens is amazing, he has worked w/ Home Free a few times. Please look at more of his stuff, Peter and his Wife make some amazing music together.
He released something on patreon yesterday, where he says he gave himself a vocal workout. I thought i knew what he can do, but I was just sitting there and thinking: How?!? I hope he releases it to the public soon.
You listen to music in the way that I wish I could live life. I love to put my self In other people's shoes and do my best to imagine what they feel so I can understand them when I see them deeply impacted. Honestly, I really dont believe in empathy. Mostly I feel when people say they empathize, I think that's mostly a lie. Empathy is the most rare of human emotions, and to claim you have I believe is just arrogant. That being said, when an outsider looks at you and they see the pain you feel for another, that is the best reference to believe a person is genuinely empathetic. When I watch your face listening to music, I honestly believe that you are an empath. I think you can actually feel what the authors feel. Respect.
I know Peter Hollens since he sang "Baba Yetu" (the Civilization IV theme) together with Malukah six years ago and he never failed to impress me since then.
Peter Hollens has made some amazing music and pairs so well with so many. Big fan of his LotR renditions, but my two very favorite songs with him are "Baba Yetu" which is him and an angelic voiced artist that goes by Malukah, and the mashup song "What a Wonderful World/Can't Help Falling in Love" aka "What a Wonderful Love"(on the album) which features The Hound+The Fox and also Evynne Hollens, Peter's wife.
Funny thing you called it stacks, when they produced the sing for release parts had over 100 different layers as they were in different locations for recording, and then the song was pieced together.
Hope you guys enjoyed this one! It was a fun time and I can't wait to explore more of Peter's arrangements :)
Then you should check out Amazing Grace!!

For a similarly atmospheric arrangement, I recommend “Black is the color of my true love’s hair” with Peter Hollens and Avi Kaplan.
Oh absolutely
Beat me to it. Can we get some upvotes going here?
Yes please explore this next!
Please. Would also be cute/funny (IMO) if you'd wear a black wig for it.
Truth is spoken!

I live in the Colorado mountains. Have a small cabin with an amazing view. I listen to this song with my morning coffee. Makes for a good day.
Sounds heavenly.
Her expressions while listening to this are so beautiful and pure. She is really feeling the music, thats precious
If you liked Peter and Tim, then you should look at Peter and Avi doing “Black is the Colour” because the arrangement is beautiful and something about the chord choices is both amazing and unsettling(?) and I need an expert to explain to me why that’s so.
This! For sure!
This for sure yes
I can't second this enough. That particular arrangement is insane.
yes please
I love that his 'low note' sounded like it had a lot of air going through it... instantly made me remember Gimli blasting that horn in Helm's Deep.
That scene is one of the best and that’s definitely saying something.
That's an excellent observation!
That’s because it’s a growl (aka dragon breath) rather than a subharmonic.

As an admitted sucker for pretty redheads, I find you not only pleasant to watch, but your insights into the music you hear is quite refreshing. Keep up the good work Girlie. I enjoy watching you ply your craft...
Tim's voice is so rich and deep.... What could be his secret? Why of course, the roar of women's ovulation worldwide!
so what came first the voice or the ovulation
@@oskarraeburn5260 whoever was with him at the time obviously came first XD
@@oskarraeburn5260 Legend has it they began as one and will continue until the end of time.
Tim’s wife was actually impregnated by his voice alone.
@@timothyclark803 And no contraceptive could prevent that type of pregnancy.
I love how invested you are in each song. You feel every note and it shows on your face.
I love it!!
So beautiful. Such a great compilation also. :)
It's been said in a number of comments here already,
but Julia, ya just GOTTA react to the Peter Hollens & Home Free collaboration cover of U2's "I still haven’t found what I’m looking for".
Not only is it wonderful from the perspective of the vocals,
but the leveling & equalization of SOOO many varied sources is a truly masterful accomplishment of Sound Engineering.
This is one of my favorite songs. The harmonies are just insane
Peter Hollens does awesome arrangements....he did a duet per se with Avi Kaplan....Black is the color of my true love hair....jaw dropping! New subscriber! Keep up the great work! Sue
I love all of you singers it's like the only real super power humans can have I do not have it but appreciate those that do
I love this reaction and analysis. Well done!
P.S I loved the 2 full chords at the end, and Tim's final note.... wow.
Love Tim. So talented. Love you and damn you are gorgeous! ❤️🙏☘️
Never heard any of these guys before but WOW !!
Amazing singing :)
Loved your breakdown too :)
The way in which you get so deeply captivated and lost in what you are listening too is enchanting. 🥰
Your reaction to Tim’s last part was great. Always enjoy your reactions.
I appreciate you using the correct technical term for Tim’s final note… “Dayummmmm” !
Beautiful reaction! Peter is genious!
Song literally makes you melt.
he has an older vid ft. his wife doing a medley of Les Mis. that is amazing, and his wife pulls off one of the best "On my own" ever
Peter Hollens is amazing, he has worked w/ Home Free a few times. Please look at more of his stuff, Peter and his Wife make some amazing music together.
Everytime I listen to this song it gives me the chills and I feel it deep in my soul
To hear Tim's true range you should react to Home Free cove of Mayday. He sings high tenor
I think he goes even higher in “Snow Globe.”
@@DennisKovacich agree
He released something on patreon yesterday, where he says he gave himself a vocal workout. I thought i knew what he can do, but I was just sitting there and thinking: How?!? I hope he releases it to the public soon.
Spoiler warning?
That last note gets everyone! Lol Great reaction!🎵🎶🎵
How ar eyou even able to talk after that? My god, Tim Fousts voice is just incredible. Its so silky, it speaks to something deep inside.
finally. a part of a bass singer that I can sing with ease xD
Tim's earthquake voice is awesome. He needs a Jurassic Park vibrating glass of water PiP when he does that last low note.
I always enjoy your insights. Thank you. :-)
Respect.
You absolutely MUST watch more Peter Hollens
Def should check out Tim's original snow globe and really see his vocal range it's insane!
I know Peter Hollens since he sang "Baba Yetu" (the Civilization IV theme) together with Malukah six years ago and he never failed to impress me since then.
peter is a legend on youyube and his music..is stunning
Tim Foust's Can't Help Falling in Love will blow you away!!!
“Baba Yetu” By Peter Holland and Maluka is my favorite.
