I am one of those "Dream Theater people". And I absolutely love Gavin, been a fan of him since the In Absentia album from when he joined Porcupine Tree. He's my "less is more" go-to drummer really. Also, great commentary on the video, Pat!
I loved the reaction Pat! I just wanted to point one thing out that Gavin playing the hi-hat with his foot in the later part was not because he was "excited" or something, he intentionally did that to give the effect of the fast pace of the song! It's not something accidental or something he improvised in the moment, you can even hear it on the actual studio recording! Gavin never does anything accidentally and always plays for the song! Thanks ❤
Maybe it is “just” 4/4 but niter mangini or Carey could play with the feel or sound as Gavin and that is why mike is Mike, Danny is Danny and Gavin is Gavin. Love all of them
He's one the drummers I really like to listen. The 2 albums that after he joined Pineapple Thief were really good if you ask me. The reason I started to listen that band was because along with songs were great you can tell there's something different in drums. Simply amazing, love Gavin Harrison.
I'd say that very little of GH's stuff is simple. He just hides most of his fancy stuff under the backbeat. He's also one of the most rhythmically creative drummers out there, and I think that's evident from how rarely plays a straight 4/4 groove, even when that would've sounded acceptable.
I was waiting someone did this react of this exact video he is incredible, the level of detail he put in this is awesome im a guitar player but i love to watch gavin harrison IMO he is the smoothest player out there incredibly original fills, never repeats it
Great commentary. I've been a fan of Gavin's for years and everyone I introduce him too (musically) I always try to explain his style by saying, "... Man, it's like watching melted butter being poured over a biscuit ... it's THAT smooth". (haha)
hughe Tool Fan here but Gavin is my absolutely favorite drummer together with Danny. Gavin got the best sounding drums i've ever heard. If Tool would ever need a new drummer, Gavin is the only one i could imagine playing those sick polyrthms und sigantures. But nevertheless, music isn't about comeptition....gonna see Tool, Porcupine Tree and The Pineapple Thief Live this year. Keep safe ✌
Marco Minnemann would be a better replacement for Tool. GH is more Jazzy and subtle, while Minneman has the same Indian classical background as Danny and also a big showoff
@@PrapujyaRamesh marco is a bit robust. You don't need robust in tool. You need calm and absolutely destroying drums in tool. Gavin fits in that more than anyone.
As someone who has only played drums for a few years, I literally learn Nothing from your analysis of these videos... and then I watch YOU drum and understand why. Cheers!
Gavin Harison to me is like that one friend that doesn't ever say anything TOO overly in your face.. until suddenly they say something that's just fucking crazy and it hits so much harder. It's like Gavin just rides it all out nice and cool, then suddenly he lays down these TASTY fills. The use of space is just so clean. He stays out of the way but then, suddenly, he is the most powerful force in the whole song and he isn't even trying.
Huge fan of this guy. Nobody else does what he does with relatively simple time sigs. I have absolutely no problem rating him as one of the best of all time.
I understand what he's saying about him playing the hi hat along with the ride through the "chorus" sections, but I actually like it. I could be wrong, but the ride sounds like it's a Dry Ride, and those have very little resonace. So, by adding the hihat along with it, it helps fill out the sound when the music is as its heaviest and busiest
nice comments, my favourite drummer, musically one of the best. barriemore barlow (jethro tull) was the other musical drummer i really loved in the past
Amo as músicas dele no porcupine tree ele aproveita todo o som que a bateria pode lhe oferecer um groove e feeling que poucos conseguem passar com tanta precisão
those "fills" that start at around 04:55 ? Take a listen to Steve Jansen, one of Gavin's often cited influences, playing on Japan's Talking Drum here (around 01:41): ruclips.net/video/VMnPLCrGZA0/видео.html
Nice commentary dude. A lot of insight while still keeping the flow of the original video. Keep it up 👍🏻 Suggestion for your next commentary video: drum playthrough of August Burns Red‘s Paramount from their new album.
Finally, great reaction to drumming videos without the unnecessary and annoying "look at me jumping and air drumming to this fella" antics. Thumbs up, subscribed and enjoying your posts sir. Greetings from Mexico 👍🏻
Please do Marco Minnemann, especially one of the live songs with Steven Wilson like "The Watchmaker" or "Holy Drinker". I just subbed, really digging these Drummer's Commentary videos.
Thank you for this reaction. You should check out Hatesong by Porcupine Tree, live from Chicago. Seeing Gavin Harrison play live with that band is something special.
5:42 I would say that hi-hat quarter note pattern actually fits quite well, but it's poorly blended in. As an engineer I would lower the hi-hat down just a touch into the mix.
Yeah that's a good point! But I try to "mix myself" when I play the drums to fit the song and make the engineer's life a bit easier. Maybe it was a creative choice of his, or maybe he just got a bit carried away with that left foot!
Pat Flanigan They talked about this in their recent album announcement livestream. Gavin Mixes his own drums and sends them over to Bruce, who mixes everything else. Their keyboard player Steve masters their albums. This is a prime example of how sometimes the ear of an outsider can be useful.
That’s awesome! But what I mean by “mixing” is actively thinking about limb and instrument volume as I perform. For example, in a small club, I wouldn’t hit on the cymbals like a maniac. Or in studio, in a verse, I’d play my bass drum and snare softer than in the chorus (if the song called for that).
Gotcha. I really think in this case it's just how he has it mic'd up. It's not as prominent on the album and I don't recall it being that prominent when I saw them live last year. I acknowledge live shows are a different animal entirely.
I'm really looking forward to it! This is an awesome band with amazing musicians and the one n' only Gavin Harrison. "Demons" is the first song of their new album and it's just AMAZING. With Gavin they are on a top-notch level!
Sound like me dude! I didnt practice rudiments enough but since I learned in the beginning by ear after taking 6 months of lessons and missing half for being young careless! Haha but I would just play songs over and over til I learned it by matching sounds and being able to do mental math for timing. Not the best most clinical way to learn haha but I can fo stuff I just dont know what it's all called lol
Harrison is superb. Possibly the best drummer in rock these days. I've seen him with Porcupine Tree and King Crimson, and he never fails t blow me away. Love his style and sound.
Trust me, if you appreciate the drums in Dream Theater and Tool (you bloody well should do by the way, both phenomenal drummers with their own unique style) you cant overlook overlook Gavin. You say it's in 4/4 but he has this ability to make you think it's in a more complex time signature. Unbelievable control and flow, he never does too much, just marries with the song and Steven Wilson's voice perfectly, the same way Danny matches Maynards voice.
It depends on how the kit is set up and what you are trying to do. If you are right handed and play in the traditional set up (hh on left, low toms on the right) and you are doing a typical 16 or 32nd note fill that ends when a bar ends but going up the toms- you would lead with your left hand.
Absolutely! Going down, you'd lead with your right; going up you'd lead with your left. Otherwise there would be a bunch of unnecessary arm-crossing. Practicing fills with your left hand isn't easy (for most right-handed drummers), which shows just how good Gavin is!
Gavin is one of the best musician ever (not simply drummer), as you said, he really serves the music and I love that about him. He is one of my favorite drummer with Todd Sucherman (see below 0_0) ruclips.net/video/3XNRPB53cKs/видео.html
Have you checked out Meytal Cohen. She's my favorite drummer on the planet because she can emulate most of my favorite drummers. She drums like a butterfly and stings like a bee. If you haven't already seen her I think it will be a pleasant little surprise for ya.I have this fantasy that James would 🔥 Lars and hire her,to Make Metallica Great Again. It's a stupid thought I know but still can't help but to wonder.
You: What he is playing is actually easy, just like the Korn video.... Gavin: Hold my sticks...ah wait no, I need them to play those sick drums fills 3:21 XD
Dude, you can’t call any of Gavin Harrison’s grooves simple... Just the ghost notes and placements alone are next level... Danny Carry is an amazing drummer and Mike Portnoy is good but you really can’t compare them to the technical skill of Gavin.
I disagree with your implication that Gavin is playing those hi-hat notes because he's "excited". I think that's an intentional stylistic choice. Certainly OK to disagree with it, but I think it's kind of diminishing what he's doing by implying that he's not in control of what he's playing.
“Dream Theater people and Tool bros” like don’t get me wrong the Mikes from DT and Danny from Tool are magnificent drummers but they don’t impress me as much as Gavin does because they don’t play nowhere near as dynamically and serving as he does.
Gavin is the man. Full stop. He has mastered time. Melodic. Syncopated. Best tuning in the business. He makes every band better...
He's insanely good. Deserves a lot of recognition. Has a great musical sense.
I am one of those "Dream Theater people". And I absolutely love Gavin, been a fan of him since the In Absentia album from when he joined Porcupine Tree. He's my "less is more" go-to drummer really.

Gavin’s just a machine, incredible playing consistently.
I'd say that very little of GH's stuff is simple. He just hides most of his fancy stuff under the backbeat. He's also one of the most rhythmically creative drummers out there, and I think that's evident from how rarely plays a straight 4/4 groove, even when that would've sounded acceptable.
White Mist is a masterpiece
Gavin is so awesome, my favorite type of drummer, filling spaces without overdoing, just flowing with the song.
Gavin wrote the PT song Bonnie the Cat and made 4/4 sound like an odd time signature.
love that song
just saw him play live and blew my head away on how brilliant he is
I was waiting someone did this react of this exact video he is incredible, the level of detail he put in this is awesome im a guitar player but i love to watch gavin harrison IMO he is the smoothest player out there incredibly original fills, never repeats it
You should cover him playing Porcupine Tree’s “Bonnie, the cat”. That is jaw dropping.
Great commentary. I've been a fan of Gavin's for years and everyone I introduce him too (musically) I always try to explain his style by saying, "... Man, it's like watching melted butter being poured over a biscuit ... it's THAT smooth". (haha)
Classy, sophisticated drumming companioned with thoughtful, very well produced commentary. A totally pro production on all fronts. Great job.
My favourite drummer in the world. And I'm a Tool and A Perfect Circle mega fan!
I learn so much from Gavin...He is just super cool!!!
New Thief album is solid if you haven’t listened to it yet. Solid Gavin drumming!
gavin is the guy that haves all skills ..powerfull consistant colourfull on time and loooot of practice!

Today i discovered a new artist. Thank you very much sir.

His live drumming is always better than the record. His solo album took on some porcupine tree songs and turned them upside down so beautifully!
Yes, Cheating the Polygraph was fantastic! Even Steven Wilson enjoyed it too.
Only a very few drummers in the world can play like this.
Nice commentary dude. A lot of insight while still keeping the flow of the original video. Keep it up 👍🏻

Thanks for another awesome video man. That guy is amazing. Have you heard any of the Zildjian Live stuff? Those performances are amazing as well.
Thanks! Yeah I’ve started watching those and some performances are really awesome! I’m adding a few to my list
He is such a tasteful player.
Gavin Harrison and Nick D'Virgilio are my favorites in this style of drumming.
Finally, great reaction to drumming videos without the unnecessary and annoying "look at me jumping and air drumming to this fella" antics. Thumbs up, subscribed and enjoying your posts sir.

I watched a lot of Gavin videos. When you see him live, he is even faster.
Ow great. Too impressive and simply in the same time
Agreed he’s amazing heaps of space

Hey Pat,
Have you ever watched Jimmy The Rev Drumming in Studio "Almost Easy"?
I would love to hear your thoughts on his drumming.
Nice commentary man on the best drummer on the planet imho
They've got a new single out now, and an album on the way.
I'm really looking forward to it! This is an awesome band with amazing musicians and the one n' only Gavin Harrison. "Demons" is the first song of their new album and it's just AMAZING. With Gavin they are on a top-notch level!
Gavin is one of those drummers who think something and his hands can just do it....years of practice
Sorry, but this song is anything but simple! Gavin Harrison is a master at making things difficult and making things look simple.
Sound like me dude! I didnt practice rudiments enough but since I learned in the beginning by ear after taking 6 months of lessons and missing half for being young careless! Gavin has become my favorite drummer now and he's got some very stiff competition
How about Manu Katche?
Keep it up bruh!
I would suggest also Break It All- The Pineapple Thief (Gavin Harrison on the drums), i think even more interesting than this song
The roll from the right to left, which hand leads? Left or right?
It depends on how the kit is set up and what you are trying to do. If you are right handed and play in the traditional set up (hh on left, low toms on the right) and you are doing a typical 16 or 32nd note fill that ends when a bar ends but going up the toms- you would lead with your left hand.

Do reaction for arriving simewhere by PT
For the dream theater people, Gavin Harrison, Dave Weckl and Virgil Donati eat them alive.
Reaction anthony barone(shadow of intent) drum is a beast thank you
You ought to check out some PorcupineTree stuff that's where gavin shines best drummer and band ever
You've got good taste in drummers.
Gavin is one of the best musician ever (not simply drummer), as you said, he really serves the music and I love that about him. He is one of my favorite drummer with Todd Sucherman (see below 0_0)

When Gavin play 4/4 it's actually 67/788766. Trust me

Listen and react to Mario Duplantier ( drummer of Gojira)
I loooove Gojira! I should do a vid on him!
You: What he is playing is actually easy, just like the Korn video....
Gavin: Hold my sticks...ah wait no, I need them to play those sick drums fills 3:21 XD
Comment on Jay Weinberg from Slipknot
Dude, you can’t call any of Gavin Harrison’s grooves simple... Just the ghost notes and placements alone are next level... Danny Carry is an amazing drummer and Mike Portnoy is good but you really can’t compare them to the technical skill of Gavin.
I can, and I did! 😱
React to Nico McBrain from Iron Maiden
suggestion: don't point camera at daylit window.
Thx dude I’m well-aware of that, but sometimes in a tiny condo you don’t have much choice...
I disagree with your implication that Gavin is playing those hi-hat notes because he's "excited". I think that's an intentional stylistic choice. Certainly OK to disagree with it, but I think it's kind of diminishing what he's doing by implying that he's not in control of what he's playing.
Arindam Dada !!! Kemonachis !!! Bhalo acche?
See you later !
*wink *wink
How is this a "4/4 song"? :D
That’s the magic of this song and Gavin’s playing! But a big chunk of this song is indeed 4/4! www.soundslice.com/slices/Bk6cc/
Harrison and Portnoy.....nuff said.
Gavin is God
This song is not plain 4/4. There are plenty of signature changes throughout this song.
Maybe that’s why I counted to 6 out loud at some point then!
“Dream Theater people and Tool bros” like don’t get me wrong the Mikes from DT and Danny from Tool are magnificent drummers but they don’t impress me as much as Gavin does because they don’t play nowhere near as dynamically and serving as he does.
You should've done the "Sound of Muzak" instead of this song but I appreciate the video nonetheless.
Every time a big orgasm Gavin.
Sorrydude he is overplaying. Play the song not all your chops in one song.
Idiotic comment. Gavin is one of the most musical and tasteful drummers in rock. He elevates the music in every band he plays in.
Gotta agree with you on that! I feel like he’s almost “underplaying” in this song, yet he still makes it tasteful af
Virgil Donati, Thomas Lang, marco Minneman, they are better than Gavin Harrisson
