You should feel the essence & soul and be part of with the music not push it to far or if you still want to do, please do it on the right approach like Portnoy or Gavin does
I agree, but what impresses me most about Mr. Harrison is the sound. His entire set sounds fantastic, but the toms are something really special. Btw, being moderate is something I've noticed that most young drummers have trouble achieving... especially when they get to a certain level and when their technique progresses and very few of them deal with the sound of the drums. They all play the same things and there isn’t some great originality here. Take, for example, Virgil Donati - a flawless drummer, perfect technique and limb independence, but where is the music? On the other hand, there's Nate Smith - groove, groove and just groove, without unnecessary showing off. Technique is essential, but it is a tool that allows us to express ourselves more easily and to get less tired while doing it.
Gavin Harrison ...is a living Mozart on drums ..one of the most melodic and musical drummers playing today in my opinion ...his playing keeps drawing you in and drawing you in more and more...simply hypnotic...
Definately. Gavin is one of the most 'colorful' drummers I've heard. There's hardly any drummer that can strike a balance between song-support and creative /inspirational playing.
I'm definitely jumping on the next porcupine tree concert if there ever is one. I love music so much but regretfully I've only ever seen one band and that's because they just so happened to play locally to me. I'm going to see VOLA in London later this year, and looking at seeing Steve Hackett as well - and that's only possible because the man is somehow still killing it 50 years later. I can't miss an opportunity to experience it, it's a shame there's nothing upcoming for PT

This song is one of the greatest songs ever made. And the fact that Gavin plays the drums hugely contributes to the eerie feeling of it. Masterpiece and heavenly
One of my favorite things about Gavin is he lays back on the beat, in such an incredible way, you anticipate and anticipate and then he drops it perfectly, the cup chimes really demonstrate this ability to nail the accents in such a manner that elevates the entire feel of the song. Another aspect is his kick drumming, he will pick up the notes in perfect spots and lay them in a way you're not expecting, I simply love his drumming and he is a huge inspiration to me, this band is amazing but when you pick Gavin Harrison, your inviting all the drummers of the world to enjoy your music so obviously there is a lot of drummers commenting on Gavin and not the band, we all love the band too, but Gavin is what we are here for lol
The amount of emotional maturity and professionalism it takes to play with closed hats after that amazing drop at 8:28 is a level I have never experienced in my life
Gavin Harrison is constantly brushing against the walls of perfection. His performance speaks all languages, satisfies all minds, delights all imaginations.
Honestly I think the live version of this is better than the studio. The mixing is immaculate, the drums sound even more expressive and Bruce's voice sounds even more powerful. Fantastic work!
A band is only as good as it's drummer.. Gavin adds the most aurally satisfying, creative, unique, rhythmic layers to each and every song He never overplays or overpowers a song, he allows every song to fully breathe while adding perfectly placed fills with solid, yet nuanced drumming He is a true master of his craft and a consummate professional
From someone learning to play the drums, this guy is such an inspiration. If one day I could end up with a tiny fraction of Gavin's ability, that'll be a really good day.
Practice, practice and practice some more. There's a good livestream of him discussing that he would practice for many hours a day for years. The more practice and fluidity, technique, you have the easier it is to play to the music when it becomes an extension of yourself rather than a forcing of your body to try and keep to the music. Let it flow out of your soul, the more fluid you become the easier it is to do just that!
Gavin is a great drummer. But don't get lost, listen to all the drummers, and learn the different styles. There's no sense in listening to this guy if you don't know people like Jo Jones or Steve Gadd. And sorry, but this music is not so good. Don't listen to a music because of the drummer. Amazing, the best prog band around, love them !!
YOU NAILED IT.
You had me at timing and rhythmic capability! But melodic? You know drummers aren't supposed to be able to do that, right? Damn dude! Rock on Gavin!
Just a perfect song from every angle
Gavin is truly something. Watching him play makes me so happy
Awesome song, great band
I would love some day TPT would visit my city Bogota Colombia so I can live first hand this amazing band.
they may not get likes as much as famous musicians do but the fact that there are zero dislikes says a lot
I saw PT supporting Blackfield in Manchester. Great gig. Very underrated band. Always on my spinning bike playlist.
