The most amazing aspect of Gavin's playing is not his technique or his excellent timing, but his ability to understand what rhythmic design should be played for the benefit of the song. That's called maturity and leaving your ego at the door to understand that the overall sound is more important than scoring points for amateur's critique on RUclips.
Thats what we call "playing in the pocket" as drummers. Probably the most underrated but most important aspect of drumming in my eyes. Play what the Song needs, dont overplay, dont underplay. It's the understanding of musical harmonics and ryhtmic elevation of the Song. Kinda like "play to assist the other musicians in the song, dont try to dominate them"
Perfectly explained, just watched the ending of Finally Free very drum ending with Maningi on Live in London DVD, that what Mr. Mangisi has missing or lacking whatever you call.. You should feel the essence & soul and be part of with the music not push it to far or if you still want to do, please do it on the right approach like Portnoy or Gavin does
I agree, but what impresses me most about Mr. Harrison is the sound. His entire set sounds fantastic, but the toms are something really special. Btw, being moderate is something I've noticed that most young drummers have trouble achieving... especially when they get to a certain level and when their technique progresses and very few of them deal with the sound of the drums. They all play the same things and there isn’t some great originality here. Take, for example, Virgil Donati - a flawless drummer, perfect technique and limb independence, but where is the music? On the other hand, there's Nate Smith - groove, groove and just groove, without unnecessary showing off. Technique is essential, but it is a tool that allows us to express ourselves more easily and to get less tired while doing it.
I'm definitely jumping on the next porcupine tree concert if there ever is one.
