Ok. Before y'all bury me in the comments section 2 things. 1. I misspoke and said Gavin plays for Spock's Beard and he of course plays for Porcupine Tree. 2. I apologize for the audio. I mistakenly thought my prior settings would work with this video. My bad!! I'll do better next time. Have a nice day!!
react to Eloy casagrande .......w.ruclips.net/video/M1QL1UhIBt4/видео.html
King Crimson - Indiscipline live in Mexico City has him and two other excellent drummers playing with drum cams...
@@HMan2828 Thanks so much for that recommendation! Indiscipline was incredible to watch. Love Gavin Harrison but they all brought it! Thanks 🤪
Gavin is one of the best drummers of all time. Fact.
Hey man, great react. If you wanna hear Gavin Harrison playing with a band checkout his main past band called Porcupine Tree, i recommend you to watch Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (Live in Tilburg), you'll get surprised for sure :)
Unity Developer & Programmer second this
i third this :D
Please do it!
Pleeeaaaassseeeeee do it
Yes, that is the perfect video!
You should look at "Hatesong" Live by Porcupine Tree, great Footage of him interacting with Solos
Oh man I haven't seen that in years, but I remember. He was absolutely fantastic in that live video. Definitely also recommend. Incredible, subtle little drum solo near the end.
GH is easily one of the best...IMO So smooth, musical all around awesomeness!!
I do now for sure.
Definitely like someone else mentioned, Anesthetize live in Tilburg is a great example of Gavin and the whole band having great chemistry playing, great song and also amazing sound quality.
You picked up on a few things that Gavin himself has said before, you can watch his interview on Drumeo.
Do you have a link to both of those videos
@@JunkdrummerTV of course, this is the interview (pretty long) around half way he explains his process of adding drum parts to one of Pineapple Thief songs
ruclips.net/video/woI6t8dCQcQ/видео.html
And Anesthetize

Gavin Harrison is my all time favorite. Best song writing drummer ever. His parts are tasteful, thought out and poetic
kinda late to the party but Gavin was one of Neil's fav drummer... that's saying something
Whenever I lose an argument over drumming greats I always bring up Gavin Harrison's name😅that man is like a reverse uno card
7:55 uuh this dude is good. Fun fact: He is probably the best drummer I have ever heart. Groove, Technique an a humbly guy
Gavin Harrison is one of the most musical drummers I've ever heard .. one of my favorites .. could really let loose at any time but prefers to be tasteful, awesome
I'm glad I found him
Just saw Gavin live with Pineapple Thief. GODLIKE!
I was just at the Cleveland show. Had him sign my GH Protean Snare. Awesome show.
I like what he's doing on the hi hat and transitioning to the drum fill. Satisfying.
It's worth watching all of his drum session videos but a particular highlight is The Chicken. The man is a god.
VERITAS.
One of my favorite drummers!
Gavin is so skilled yet he never really over powers the songs, I know him from Porcupine Tree and he just plays for the music. If you focus on him he will blow your mind but never in your face about it more subdued in his style.
One of the few drummers that u know its him if u close your eyes in 10 seconds
Gavin has a finesse about him that makes him really enjoyable to watch. Saw him playing with King Crimson a few months ago and it was amazeballs. Absolutely love watching him do his thing.
Awesome! I love Gavin! He really serves the song. Great video, great commentary.
Great video! Gavin is one of my favorite drummers ever and a big drumming inspiration. Never found anyone who sounds quite like him. Very melodic and flowing but still technical
Check out Porcupine Tree with Gavin on drums. "ANESTHETIZE" live. Gavin really shines on that. Always tasteful and playing for the song.
Yes that is an excellent song
Never heard of him either but I learned something from this vid:
I need cooler pants.
We all do
Wikipedia is not your friend here, RUclips is. Bill Bruford considers him the only drummer worth listening to at the moment.
"Gavin Harrison" Biggest Claim to Fame is Really a Band Called: "Porcupine Tree"...
Like mentioned below please check out 'Anesthetize' Song Live and 'Don't Hate Me' Live with his Band Called: "Porcupine Tree"...
P.S. Many Many more Great Drumming Songs with the Band Called: "Porcupine Tree" by "Gavin Harrison"!
See highlighted comment
at 9:23 that "extended phrase" is just 4/4 but the band is playing over the bar line
He was also in Porcupine Tree and you should check out Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (Live in Tilburg). Gavin Harrison is my favorite drummer of all time.
Love prog! Gavin is amazing. I saw Pineapple thief in Toronto, On, and the band was awesome!! Gavin makes the band so much better its crazy!!
Please consider react to Gavin Harrison playing "Anesthesize" at the modern drummer 2008
I've been listening to Prog music for over 40 years and of course, my favorite drummers would be Bill Bruford, Phil Collins, Neil Peart but Gavin Harrison is in a league of his own.
The comment at 8:59 earned you a sub! I mostly listen to prog rock and prog metal, but as a drummer, it's really hard for me to find new bands that I like for this exact reason. Gavin is fantastic exactly because he knows his place in the song.
Bill Bruford does a great version of the drum also waltzes
Gavin has never really been into prog rock either, he just happened to be in bands that play that kind of music. He grew up listening to and playing jazz and funk. When Robert Fripp asked him to join King Crimson, Gavin told him he actually didn’t know much about the band. Fripp’s response was like “great! You’ll come into the band with fresh new ideas”
i wouldn't trust a drum teacher who never heard of gavin to be honnest, but u looks like a cool dude!!
Without a doubt, check out the Anesthetize Drum play along from Gavin/Porcupine Tree. A couple more great players to explore are Anup Sastry, (his play along of Singularity from the latest Devin Townsend record is awesome) and Navene Koperweis from Entheos; Primal and An Ever Expanding Human are a couple of great tracks that will blow your mind.
He has a Jazz background, lot of Big Band stuff in his playing, great fusion stuff
Best drummer all time in my personal opinion....
I find it odd you didn't hear about gavin throughout your carrier
I don't really have any prog friends
Loving your vids, they're very inspirational! I have one nitpick though... In the ExpertVillage reaction video you said "I hate pillows in bass drums". At 9:56 here you say "Maybe the best sounding drum set that we've have on Junkdrummer TV so far". But Gavin uses a pillow in the bass drum...
As I said. For recording you do what you have to do to get the sound. That video is of a recording in a studio. Live. For me anyway. Get that pillow out of there. I wanna FEEL the bass overtones.
@@JunkdrummerTV He uses it live too though, check out this vid from Modern Drummer Fest - bass drum sounds great too me and has a level of clarity and articulation that I don't think would be there without the heavy damping. ruclips.net/video/6suv3mraIhw/видео.html
Anyway I am playing devil's advocate slightly as of course I'm aware it's all personal preference. I'm seriously enjoying your videos man, they are incredibly inspiring and I'll definitely be recommending them to friends of mine. The jazz drummer vids in particular really have got me in the mood to start listening to more jazz again soon! Can't wait to see more :)
I'd love a review of him with Porcupine Tree live. Sometime. In the future.
Gavin is a beast playing drums, you should listen to some of his songs played in porcupine tree !
Another awesome video! You should definitely check out Matt Greiner from August Burns Red, specifically the songs “Back Burner” and “Composure” Also, Jordan Mancino from As I Lay Dying is amazing! Keep up the good work, man :)
Porcupine Tree live in Tilberg Netherlands......get a schooling,,, he's a drumming bad ass.
Yes he is.
Interesting about Gavin, his fulcrum is actually his ring finger and pinky. Tony Williams was really famous for using this grip, great for backbeats.
Love your analysis here. Very entertaining.
"Tendencies are handcuffs for creativity".
That's makes way too much sense. I like that.
I say it all the time in lessons
@@JunkdrummerTV that is a very good saying. I've been enjoying your vids. I play guitar, and right after watching you, I realized that there are drum bests on utube. No time for a band and all that comes with it. Anyway, happy holidays to You.
Gavin Harrison is a wonderfully creative and melodic drummer. Incredibly talented and tasteful. He's brilliant with Porcupine Tree and they have a ton of great live videos - also as far as prog goes Porcupine Tree is pretty wankery-free. One of the best live bands I've ever seen.
Gavin is killer! I first checked him out with porcupine tree which other than Rush is my favourite prog band. Last summer ( when live music existed) I saw pineapple thief at the mod club in Toronto! The band was awesome but Gavin made them so much better! I’ve never seen a drummer other than Neil Peart have such a presence musically in a band!! Ps love your analysis man, great job!
Love Gavin's playing, been a fan of his for many years. Check out PORCUPINE TREE - HATESONG (HD)[549,398 views] It says "Filmed at the Park West, Chicago, USA, 11-12 Oktober 2005" in the description. Very tasteful playing in that performance. Hopefully you'll get around to the amazing Dave Weckl too, the guy is one of the most musical drummers ever. Check out Marco Minnemann too, he's a freak of nature. He's in The Aristocrats, Steven Wilson & Spaceship One with Paul Gilbert & many other projects.
Being a "song fan" you should check out Band-Maid! Their drummer Akane is a beast on the kit. Not the most technical drummer, perhaps, but if she's good enough to catch Jimmy Page's eye, she's good enough for anyone!
Check out the beginning of Threatening War or In Exile by Pineapple Thief if you want your mind blown. Ghost notes while cross sticking? yep.
Enjoy your video's man, keep it up, nice stuff! His technique is based off of Joe Morello/George Lawrence stone and Jim Chapin type teachngs. Moeller is an accented whipping motion, where the stick is used like a whip creating controlled power stokes followed up with bounce/tap strokes. You nailed it though the fulcrum is on the second knuckle and the control comes from your back 3 fingers. I have studied for years with Dom Famularo who specializes in teaching freestroke/exercise for the freestroke/Billy Gladstone finger technique and Moeller, so im very familair with Gavins technique, which is excellent btw..I'm seeing a variety of Freestroke mixed with some Moeller!
This is an excellent band. Straight up greatttttt musicians!!!!!!!!
Gavin Harrison ... (in my opinion) ... really compliments the song. And that's why I really, REALLY like his drumming. :)
(I know nothing of making music, I just listen...)
Not sure if people posted things already, but here's (a long) one of him playing Anesthetize with Porcupine Tree:
ruclips.net/video/iBfY86cktN0/видео.html
the genius Gavin has also play for the jazzy funk band INCOGNITO he is so versatile, simply the greatest (now with King Crimson)
But yeah, please consider checking out his work with Porcupine tree! Anywhere you really can go wrong but anesthetize and the sound of muzak are great
You looked him up on wiki and didn’t found out he was in Porcupine Tree?
🙃
Makes me wanna practice... and get cool pants. 😄
Hello! search for Bruno Valverde, Angra's current drummer, the two previous drummers are excellent too ... But this one has fusion elements, and even though Angra is a brazilian prog metal band, he uses tradicinal grip. Take a look! :)
Aaron Gillespie and Senri Kawaguchi please!
He always plays for the song.
Gavin Harrison actually talks about playing the drums melodically a lot actually. What ever instrument you play you should really watch his interviews.
Hatesong live. Gavin is King.
You can top this by reacting to his song _19 days_ !
Gavin Harrison, simply the best !
If you're and drummer and have never listened to Porcupine Tree you have definitely missed out. Gavin is a creative and tasteful drummer who has his own style and I consider him to be one of my top 5 favorites.
1:32 you said your not even sure if you like playing drums?! how do you not know if you like playing a instrument you teach! I'm a drummer and i love playing drums!!! lol im just saying...
I was being facetious!!
@@JunkdrummerTV k cool man! i like your vids dude you should do Metallica lars ulrich i'm curious on what you would say lmao
I promise I'll be getting around to him
@@JunkdrummerTV awesome!!!
One of the most technically adept drummers ever created!! Love Gavin.
I agree
Could I request any Bruford, White, or 72-76 Collins? Heart of the Sunrise is such a nuanced drum track it's incredible.
King Crimson is actually running THREE drummers on the front of the stage now:
Pat Mastoletto, Bill Bruford, and Gavin Harrison. You really need to check out the three of them together! You will squirt in your very cool pants!
Old Dude New Space Bruford retired 10 years ago. Jeremy Stacey 3rd drummer
Man some of these prog guys leave me stone cold. Suggestion: Stewart Copeland. Message in a Bottle. Incredible and also he tried SOOO HARD to not get ahead of the beat. Epic tight rope walk.
There is tons of money in the Prog scene. You need an education in Prog ;)
Hahaha. Ya think so?
1 he plays for porcupine tree and 2, what’s up with the audio?
See pinned comment
Listen to porcupine tree
Cool pants counter: 3
Check out Bonnie The Cat. Talk about tasteful chops...that song is full of it.
When you said something about drums with a condom on I lost it
How could u not have heard of gavin Harrison before??
Because
He used to play with Sam Brown: "Stop! Before..."
Ouch man, fates warning isnt cringy! Lol but aside from the comment, great videos man! I'm digging it!
Now its time for some Tomas Haake (Meshuggah), it will blow you away!
Dude i don't know where you are from but Sir Steven Wilson and Mr. Gavin Harrison are so great combo. And you should check the drummers Steven's been working with like Minnemann and Lang and Garrison ect.. Prog music isn't just what it use to be. Its very greative aka progressive. Or even music with O5ric or just Gavin Harrison Chicken version.
Great video! I hope you check out Baard Kolstad from Leprous. In particular, their live version of their song "Slave".
porcupine tree dark matter live at tilburg, say no more
Yup, Porcupine Tree - are a niche band.
Hey Brother can you do some Sean Kinney... Do has some killer drum parts .....please , please, please..... From all the way Down Under....
Jarzombek!!!
Thanks for your brilliant Videos... but: what ist cringe about listening to Fates Warning? To me they have been the best metal -relatef Prog Band between 1989 and 2006 ( The Mark Zonder years)!
Listen to Anesthetize Drum by Gavin....Be amazed....
Nothing cringe about Fates Warning sir. When Zonder stepped in they made some classic albums with very strong songwriting.
Those are the records I listened to
Gavin Harrison is the best. Check out Pineapple thief In Exile
Reacts to one of the best drummers on Earth...focuses almost entirely on his pants. 😂. In all seriousness though, you hit it on the nail that what is so awesome about Gavin is that even though he has ridiculous chops his playing is never ostentatious - this was actually fairly showy for him! Definitely check out his stuff with Porcupine Tree, they’re a good “prog” band for people who hate prog.
I mean. They were great pants. Totally bought a pair.
Watch Futile Big Band Version :O
Did you.... Did you say you were not sure if you even like playing drums?
Ok
I like playing songs. And drums are what I do to do that
Do Matt Garstka....pick anything, you cant go wrong
Yeah man.
Please react to Porcupine tree- hatesong (the live version)
He still practices 8 hours a day.
I believe you
Did I mention he had cool pants!
I totally bought some just like it after doing the video
Junkdrummer TV haha that’s awesome love your videos keep it up!!!
Gavin is so tasty!
You should def. check out PTree's Sound of Muzak or the pineapple thief's Tear You Up (he does this amazing finger tapped ghost note part while doing the cross stick).
