Dude, I know exactly how you feel! It’s almost a sense of helplessness and a lot of WTF! How is Zeppelin so good?! I’m a musician too and have been lucky enough to tour the world numerous times for playing my guitar, which I would’ve been doing anyway! lol I obviously stole a ton from Page too. I love The Beatles too, but they never rocked like Led Zep. Zeppelin was the perfect storm at the perfect time. It will never happen again with that type of intensity and ingenuity. What I mean by it, is that Rock n’ roll was still pretty new at the time at only approximately 20 yrs old, and was still being invented. I could go on and on and on...
    Great vid, man! Thanks!

    • @justasimpleguy7211

I'm not a musician. In fact I'm a techie with no artistic talent whatsoever, unless one considers the artistic aspect in creating computer code. LOL!
That being said and from very early on there was something at a deep, organic or cellular level that spoke to me of the greatness of the band. It blows the mind, fills the heart and frees the soul to soar to amazing heights!
The other band that speaks to the depths of my being is Rush. Another absolutely electric band.
Before I moved to what was once my vacation property I had a four hour drive I'd do several times each summer. The entire journey, both ways, was filled with Zeppelin and Rush CDs. Driving through the mountains with that music permeated every fiber of my being and melted away all the worries and weariness the world could throw my way. :-)

    • @NickP333
      @NickP333 4 года назад

I would absolutely consider you an artist. Wether you’re creating music, designing a blueprint, or creating computer code, you are still creating. I consider that to be an artist; one who creates.
From what I wrote, it’s obvious that we both get the same feeling from bands such as Zeppelin, Rush, Beatles, etc. They touch our souls.
I bet those some of those drives were over before you expected by getting lost in such beautiful scenery while listening to such beautiful music that penetrated every cell in your body. You certainly don’t have to be a musician for music to touch you in a deep and meaningful way.
Have a great rest of your week, and I hope you get a chance to get little breaks via the magic of music throughout!
      - Nick

And yes, driving through the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York is very scenic. This past weekend I loaded up my kayak and fishing gear and took a two hour drive to a remote pond, passing through Lake Placid. Leaf Peepers were out in force!

It was great but the years passed and the band broke up to dreams that never were. I drifted away from rock and ole Zeppelin but I started hearing a song here and song there from poking around into the old newsgroups full of FLAC audio and I remembered why I loved them. It's like I'm reconnecting and re-experiencing why I loved them in the first place. So unique and so talented.

I remember that weekend (Martha Quunn) I recorded the SRS on VHS, and wore it out. This tune didn't even make the cut. I coun't the foot as 16th note trips. Anyway, Bonham truly had it all. Everything about all things drums changed once Bonham hit the scene. Kits, cymbals, etc..I wish there was 30 second footage of just his R foot. They groove so hard, it's almost impossible to tell when they're in odd times. They never played the same song the same way twice (including drum solo). These guy read each other's minds. I can go on forever. Bonham is no question the most influential drummer of all time! Glad you posted this vid!

I know nothing about drumming, but I would think Bonham's playing on "Fool In The Rain" is amazing.

Great video! We’re about the same age because I remember spending that same weekend glued in front of the TV absorbing Led Zeppelin. I ended up playing guitar, but I’m tempted to pick up drums after watching your videos. Thanks!!

I did a similar thing with Zeppelin but because of Page and been playing guitar ever since (1984)... funny story though... I took drum lessons for a few months as an adult and within 2 lessons my teacher said “You listen to a lot of Zeppelin and Floyd, right?” I didn’t know what he meant at the time, but he was right. Lol

Just found you and subscribed. Led Zeppelin is the GOAT. I remember 68 and huge they came to be. Incredible! They all were great musicians with a wide range of influences, including Buddy Rich for Bonzo. Great reaction!!!

I have some disagreements with several things you said, but because of my admiration of John Bonham, I see no reason to bring those up here. Instead, I'd rather share my experience at a Led Zeppelin concert in Greensboro, NC on 1/29/1975.
    ...
About midway through the concert during Moby Dick, Bonham launched into a drum solo and the rest of the band left the stage to take a break. His solo lasted 25-30 minutes. About 5-10 minutes in, I tried to mimic him by playing "air drums," but my arms got worn out LONG before he finished his solo.
Eventually, the rest of the band returned and joined back in to finish the song... and Bonham didn't miss a beat. Then they went right into the next song without a break. I was impressed and amazed that he could keep on going like that for so long. He was like an unstoppable machine.

That is usually why the first two albums of a real good band are the best in terms of composition, because these guys had the chance to perfect the songs live before going in and recording. When the original pre-studio material runs out, they never really get that again. It is simply because they don't get that play it to the audience until it FITS before recording in the studio again.

John did a lot of unison playing with Jimmy. Being as powerful and groove oriented as John was, his ear a feel around the melody was absolutely exceptional. How well they listened to each other gave the opportunity to say something fresh. That's so rare these days as to be non-existent in rock and pop anymore. Thank god for jazz is all I can say.

I have listened to and played along with hundreds of drummers in my drum shed as a kid but now years on there is still something about Bonham’s groove which makes him stand above other drummers’. Also I had years of lessons so I know there are more technical drummers Palmer, Vinnie, Weckl, Gadd: Bozzio can do amazing technical feats but they don’t give me the feeling I get from Good Times Bad Times and my personal favourite The Rain Song. Seriously overlooked Bonham track. Also not many drummers can play 1 and 3 bass drum 2 and 4 on the snare and make it sound interesting but Bonham does on Kashmir with a few nicely placed triplets intermittently. Simple but seriously effective. Also no one needs reminding of the amazing upgrade he gave to the Purdie half time shuffle. Bonham often gets called a thudder by critics as he was a heavy hitter but listen to the 16th note triplets on the bass drum on Good Times Bad Times. The dexterity and precision required should not be underestimated. Poetry in motion.

Yep. It's called style. If John Bonham played on some different song of some random group and you were hearing it without knowing anything about it, you would be able to pick him out. I don't know that we could say that about alot of other drummers.

On odd time signatures: I think someone said of Rush's Limelight that you just don't notice that it's going through all the time signature changes because it flows so well as a song. They probably didn't think "hey, let's switch between 3/4 and 4/4 with some 2/2 thrown in too" while writing it.

I’m an old hippie chick, 69 years old. Seeing Led Zeppelin in Atlanta in 1973....actually did change my, along with some incredibly good acid, Lebanese hash and the always present ass kicking weed. Well I’m almost at the end of my life (COPD). My only request is to have the nurses put headphones on my head so I can be blasting Zeppelin when I take my last breath. I’ve seen many concerts, Rush, Pink Floyd, early Genesis and Yes....Led Zeppelin was the very best, the Greatest of All Time!

I was actually in a band with a drummer who became the singer who said that he didn't understand all the hubbub about John Bonham. He just said he drummed on the beat and played for for most of his career. I told him he just doesn't get it with all the ghosts hits in the Finesse and the feel. Our days were numbered after that

I play my 32nd notes on the bass drum by sliding my foot but it’s such a small amount no one would ever know I was sliding. It looks to come 100% from my ankle. I never knew exactly what I was doing until I payed attention one day trying to figure out why my left foot wasn’t as strong as my right foot. My old drum teacher is probably the closest you’ll get to John Bohnham but I’m fairly certain I figured out that technique on my own since I had my chops unfortunately BEFORE I knew what time was. I’m sure it was something I absorbed from listening to Led Zeppelin. The school system failed me and I was forced to play clarinet until I rebelled. So I played clarinet for 4 years since I liked being in band but my heart was with the drums. For me it’s the ULTIMATE lesson of how you can’t get back lost time.

I heard Immigrant song on my parent's HiFi when I was 5 years old. That primal rhythm stunned me and as a young girl I had to emulate it. Now as a 54 year old grandmother I can proudly say I have mastered Song Remains the Same, Achilles Last Stand and a few others. Bonzo was a driven rhythm master - so much clever variety, nuance and emotion. If I were to ever give in a get a tattoo it would have to be Bonzo related.
