Neil Peart wrote the introduction to Gavin Harrison's book "Rhythmic Composition: Featuring the Music of Porcupine Tree" from 2014. In the intro he is talking about listening to Gavin's music and says "Yes - if I could play like that, that is how I would play." Pretty high praise from The Professor.
In this performance they are all doing innovative and unconventional stuff and yet the whole ensemble just hangs together perfectly. Top musicians at the top of their game.
Yeah dude there’s so much to pick apart. I can’t even catch it all as a first time viewer. I watched again and his use of those tiny buzz rolls is so crazy. How does he get away with a tiny fill like that? 😂😂
Only other drummers can truly appreciate Gavin’s incredible approach to the drums and complexity of his playing yet can be so subtle and powerful amazing artist 🥁🥁🥁
I‘ve been playing guitar for like 27 years now and would love to learn the drums so badly these days. And let me Tell you, not only beautiful guitar sounds brings tears to my eyes but also every geniusly played instrument. As a musician from the bottom of my heart it is not hard to recognise if someone is a master in his discipline, no matter if it is the drums or whatever. But sure, the reverance of someone who is playing the same instrument is Even higher for sure :-)
I am a musician ,and it is by knowing the nuances ,and dynamics of all instruments ,and their players ( bandmates ,and others.) While I dont disagree in theory..It is more believable if you are addressing non musicians ,average listener musicians ,your statement holds water.
Gavin Harrison is unbelievable. He is the drummer with a taste of unspeakable quality. Every single sound he makes on his kit makes you have that stank face. He is The Drummer for me.
Great that you found Gavin… here’s another drummer that is flying under the radar… Ben Shanbrom from the band Earthside. Ben has those Gavin-esque skills of dynamics, creativity and time feel. Try Drum Playthrough for the song “The Closest I’ve come”. Absolutely stunning 😮
I love to see people as blown away by Gavin as I am. Tons more great Haken videos available ...
Love Gavin with Crimson! Have only been able to see that magical combo once, but also count myself lucky to have seen them on the 'Discipline' tour with Bruford, Levin, Belew and Fripp.
Thank you for checking out the video! Gavin is unbelievably good. I just recently discovered him near the end of 2022 and maaaaan EVERY video I see from him blows me away
More Gavin: "Way out of Here" from the Porcupine Tree live concert in Tilburg. Such powerful drumming that really contributes to the emotion of the song.
Thank you Arturo, your "the definition of less is more" and "silence" made me hit the subscribe button faster than ever: you got it spot on and show an understanding of Gavin's artistry that I haven't seen elsewhere.
Been a PT fan for 20 yrs and seen them live a bunch of times, they're all absolutely amazing live but Gavin is on a whole different level! he's a living legend and this song is one of their best live. Thanks for the reaction Arturo, cheers from Italy 😊
This live album was the album that settled Porcupine Tree as my favorite band. And the solos and rhythms/breakdowns of Hatesong was just all that. Wilson's insanely brutal guitar solo with all its dissonance was one of those moments.
😂😂😂 I’m that guy who goes to the front just to stare down musicians for the hope of their abilities to rub off on me just a smidge… Cheating the polygraph has come up many times. I’ll definitely give it a watch very soon
Gavin is just in a class of his own! Sublime to watch him play. Keep in mind that he turns 60 years old on the 28th May 2023! He looks maybe 40 if that. 😜🥁 I think he may be an alien. 😂 Awesome 👍👏👏👏👏😎
He has the most unique feel in drumming, in terms of his timing, and subverting expectations, in terms of what he hits (cymbal when most drummers would hit snare etc.) since bull bruford. It’s no wonder they both played for king crimson
I don't play drums and yet I fully recognize Gavin Harrison's brilliance. Been listening to Alan White, Bill Bruford, etc., from the late 1960s, early 1970s. The drummers that Wilson has used in his solo act are pretty decent too. Gavin shone in In Absentia but it was really Fear of a Blank Planet where Wilson crafted songs to highlight Gavin's percussion skills. And yet none of the songs sound like Gavin is 'showing' off.
I said wtf at the same time as you did at the end of the original video. That Guy is just a beast, class musicians that can somehow keep time during that too.
This song, along with the rest of this incredible dvd ('Arriving Somewhere...' live in Chicago) is what helped me see the wonder and excitement of the drums. Gavin's work is really a gift for music enthusiasts. Others have rec'd 'Way Out of Here' live, which is awesome. I'd add 'Halo', 'Cheating the Polygraph', 'Start of Something Beautiful'--really any live PT stuff w/ Gavin will be rewarding.
There are drummers with technique, and drummers with incredible musical taste. But only Gavin has both the taste, and the chops to the execution so the feeling is just right.
This is music at the highest level! I never analysed the lyrics of this song but as far as I understand it's about all the emotions you go through when you're angry and full of hate towards something/someone. That's why the guitar solo midsong sounds so weird because it's supposed to put the uncontrolled emotions into music. Steven Wilson might actually be the best modern songwriter for this kind of emotional songs and Gavin only adds into the theme of this song with all his weird little fills again bringing out these sparks of emotions. He perfectly plays some of the fills to sound unfinished or as if they broke off to show (I think) again the state of not being able to control what you do and think when you are incredibly angry and full of hate. Perfect music and probably my favorite Gavin Harrison performance🔥🔥
It is quite a fact that every band where Gavin steps in gets elevated to a whole new level. Listen to Porcupine Tree before and when Gavin have stepped in. Do the same with The Pineapple Thief and King Crimson and you immediately notice a huge difference. Gavin's musical influence, apart from his massive drum skills, is of invaluable importance for those bands. I almost want to say that everything Gavin touches, turns to gold (how cliché, I know!)
Like Buford before him, Gavin is a Clock. He practices and practices. This is the result. There are some phenomenal players.......then there is Gavin.😅
Seen him many times. Always magnificent. With PT but also with King Crimson ( with the 3 drummers formation). Very impressive. Have a try🤘🔥 nice video by the way, thank U
Well, if you want to see some mind blowing stuff, check out Gavin with King Crimson a few years back when they had three drummers playing with them and Gavin being one of them.
this song kinda makin me wanna learn bass guitar im not ganna lie. I feel like I could just forget the massive weight of my neurotic feelings if I could just play that right there. did you see the way tat dude was smiling?
I hear ya not sure how I missed out - but I have listened to every poccupine tree album 20yrs worth and i am still kicking myself lol- try "way out there" live if you haven't already. let us also appreciate steven wilson for writing and producing poccupine tree which is his creation
Hey thanks for the reaction vid. It’s always a good time watching Gavin Harrison play. He flew under my radar for awhile too but now I’ve seen him many times in concert and he’s a machine. If you want to watch more of Gavin live, check out Halo. As a drummer myself, I watch this video everyday. Links below, cheers ruclips.net/video/J_aXs4O9JoQ/видео.html
I think he has drum clinics on video where he explains his background and what it turned into musically. 😮🤯 Steven wouldn't have good players in the band, you have to be visionary as a musician.
Never heard of Gavin? Sooo, I guess you never heard of Jay Postones? In search above => Beneath My Skin / Mirror Image (P O R T A L S) by TesseracT and also take note of 6 octave range of Daniel Tompkins. He is known as The Voice.
Yeah I did a reaction to Jay man. It was the video where you can hear his click track and dude even with the click track I was lost 😂 these guys are too good for me to grasp the way they write and play. I’ve only been playing seriously since may of 2022

Wow that’s incredible… Gavin is truly a force in the drumming world
In this performance they are all doing innovative and unconventional stuff and yet the whole ensemble just hangs together perfectly. Top musicians at the top of their game.
Every song with Gavin is a master class. Hear him play big band stuff and it's 🤯
"what the fuck?!" that pretty much sums it up haha. Gavin is a legend
As a life long bassist, I REALLY appreciate his playing.
Right?
Makes it look easy until you try.
Gavin has incredible coordination and timing.
You're wrong. Every musician can appreciate his legendary playing.
I am a musician ,and it is by knowing the nuances ,and dynamics of all instruments ,and their players ( bandmates ,and others.)
While I dont disagree in theory..It is more believable if you are addressing non musicians ,average listener musicians ,your statement holds water.

He truly is a legend
Dude your channel name is epic! Thanks for the comment yeah the guy is definitely going to be recognized though the times even long after he’s gone
Dude YES! I’ll check him out very soon! Thank you so much for the suggestion.
So stoked that PT produced a new album last year. Now praying that the ‘Porcupine Three’ choose continuation over closure.

This was just recommended to me by a friend. I had no idea how good this was going to be. Thanks Brother!
The outtro is phenomenal, and the rifle shot beat of Stick Together straight after is a brilliant counterpoint.
Completely sick!!!!

He was as good last October when I saw Porcupine Tree live.
😂😂😂 I’m that guy who goes to the front just to stare down musicians for the hope of their abilities to rub off on me just a smidge…
Cheating the polygraph has come up many times. I’ll definitely give it a watch very soon
Live version of I drive the hearse, KScope advert for Octane Twisted album. Masterclass of tasteful drumming

thanks for sharing - totally amazing from start to finish !
It's the rim shot fill at 3:06 that gets me every time 🤘
You'll have to see song called Way out of here from Porcupine tree. And of corse the live version. Gavin really is masters of drumming!!
Live version for sure. Incredible!
Arturo, when. you just started laughing near the end, I was right there with you! Just wow. Greatness!

I've been following PT since the mid 90's. Gavin also played with The Pineapple Thief and plays progressive jazz. Amazing drummer!
Cheating the polygraph at Tilburg - amazing
You got to listen more Porcupine Tree stuff! Especially Anesthesize Live
This man is incredible
This song, along with the rest of this incredible dvd ('Arriving Somewhere...' live in Chicago) is what helped me see the wonder and excitement of the drums. Knowing what not to play and when not to is so important to dynamics. Porcupine Tree and Thief have the precision I often seek.
The other thing about Gavin is Groove. From the very first hit you can feel the pocket.
There are drummers with technique, and drummers with incredible musical taste. But only Gavin has both the taste, and the chops to the execution so the feeling is just right.

you know he's a drummer when he smiles at the ride bell at 1:57 Yeah less is more
The bell was a chefs kiss 😩👌
@@TheGhostNotePodcast very well put my good guy ;)
Gavin lives to play from the lower toms up.
He's a drummer !

i'm not a drummer but i love how he uses a splash or two in a row just before the first beat in a bar and it sounds like "shi-shew"
this song kinda makin me wanna learn bass guitar im not ganna lie. I feel like I could just forget the massive weight of my neurotic feelings if I could just play that right there. did you see the way tat dude was smiling?
I hear ya not sure how I missed out - but I have listened to every poccupine tree album 20yrs worth and i am still kicking myself lol- try "way out there" live
if you haven't already.
let us also appreciate steven wilson for writing and producing poccupine tree which is his creation
0:44 - You pause it as much as you want!
That's why we are here, to hear your thoughts. And thus your pauses and thoughts. :D
In case you dont have it on the list already - "Cheating the Polygraph" by Porcupine Tree LIVE in Tilburg. Be prepared to be equally gobsmacked!
Ze Best!
And Gavin says he's not a double bass drummer. 🤣🤣
Gavin is the best.
Lol - greatest reaction ever 🙂
Thank you! That means a lot! 😁😁
How did you miss the killer fill on the rims at 3:07?🤘🏻🥁❤️
Hey thanks for the reaction vid. It’s always a good time watching Gavin Harrison play. He flew under my radar for awhile too but now I’ve seen him many times in concert and he’s a machine.
If you want to watch more of Gavin live, check out Halo. As a drummer myself, I watch this video everyday. Links below, cheers

what is PRS ?
Prs guitar? I don’t remember this video cuz it’s been so long 😂 but it was probably a PRS guitar I was talking about
I think he has drum clinics on video where he explains his background and what it turned into musically. 😮🤯 Steven wouldn't have good players in the band, you have to be visionary as a musician.
you ever hear and or react to zach hill?
Better than Neil Peart for sure
Kinda reminds me of Bill Bruford

Gavin Harrisson needs a better Band. Porcupine tree is not that great as Gavin is
