Reminds me of Danny Carey in that regard. As soon as you think you have the time signature figured out, it switches and then your lost and confused if you even had it figured out to begin with. Danny never even plays to a click or metronome he hates them lol.
I thought Baard tossed his stick at one point to signal the other drummer that the live dub was done, so i asked him. He said that was pure coincidence and that he breaks sticks so often, because he keeps playing with old sticks, that it's very common during takes for him to lose a tip or break a stick. This song was on repeat for probably 4 weeks when he posted the vid. And nice catch on the telephone receiver commentary.. yes some sound engineers will use defunct telephones, military radio receivers, and even old WWII headsets to record snares, high hats etc because of their exceptional upper range, and it gets really nice crisp layers to the sound. if you haven't already, check out his playthrough of "Rewind", the song that made me fall in love with leprous, and by proxy a big fan of Baard. you can also check out, a now quiet band, Agent Fresco. Keli (their drummer who looks a bit like the muppet drummer) is AMAZING, has an obsession with linear drumming and man can that guy make a groove.

This is probably one of my all-time favorite songs and I love coming back to this video. I think 'Moon' is his best drumming performance though. Love that video.
Thank you! One of the few drum reactions that give some actual insight on what he's doing, like the 11/4 time signature, the stick and beater technique, the china placement, and "PewDiePie" LOL. Great video. BTW, Baard said the reason he put the china there is to avoid overplaying it. So it's uncomfortable on purpose!
He is using that technique where his thumb is always loose. I think that gives much more stick weight manipulation then some standard techniques. Great video 😁
I saw an interview with him recently & he said he like an extra snare with a lower pitch & lots of toms so he can play melodically, which kinda blew my mind!
What's really surprising to me, and a little bit sad I think, is that a lot of drummers do NOT do that. We often think of drums as a rhythmic instrument, but drummers have so much melodic possibilities if they take the time to look for it. His set altogether is not the biggest, but he actually uses all the pieces of his drumset a good amount in every song, unlike some drummers who have the biggest drumset they can, but rarely use a lot of it. He really makes good use of that slightly bigger-than-normal set.
Haha Will the reason I can’t play is cause my studio was getting demolished so I was evicted and with the pandemic all the rehearsal spots are closed so I can’t get a new place... thanks anyway tho!

I find it odd that so many musicians reacting to this song struggle with the fairly straight forward 11/4 pattern (8+3 for the song, 6+5 for the outro). What Bård does brilliantly (which might confuse some) is layering the patterns, so he's got 11/8 and 11/4 running at the same time. Works great for these odd time signatures.
I’ve, no kidding, watched this performance over 100 x’s! My favorite part is still when he misses that 1 China hit! The “oh well” look he gives is perfect!
I love the outro to this so much. I still think of it as 11/8 (or whatever groupings of 11 you want to call it), but with the accents flipping every second bar. So if it’s a 2 bar phrase, the first bar has those crash accents on the on-beats (1, 3, 5, 7…) and then the second bar has them on the off-beats (2, 4, 6…). Such an interesting groove.

Pretty sure that in this case the phone is part of the snare sound. I’ve used a mic like this before. If the guy in the control room can hear the drums, he can hear the drummer talk. It’s usually the guys in the control room who need to setup a mic to talk to the performer (unless the console has a built-in one)

@@ThorsShadow Yes, I understand your point, but it really depends how the original notation denotes tempo, bars and quarternotes. Example 1: 6/4 in 100 BPM per quarternote is the same as 3/4 in 100 BPM per quarternote if bars are half the length. Example 2: 6/4 in 100 BPM per quarternote is the same as 6/8 in 100 BPM per quarternote and the same as 6/8 in 200 BPM per eight-note if bars are the same length. This is why I said that it really doesn't matter if you call it 11/8 or 22/4 or something else, as long as you properly recognize the fundamental ratio.

john blackwell is the one who was drummer for prince and passed out, a total groove machine
You should check out the live in concert version they just released, so hectic
Great video. Unfortunately you really need to adjust your volume eq. When the band is playing its much louder than your voice. I'm constantly having to turn up while you talk then turn down while the band plays
Great reaction and commentary
Ok WTF, is he playing!!! What a weird pattern. But this guy has some a major precision, I bet you this guy timewise is right on the money. His creative process on he attacks part of this song are like no other. Who did this guy study under. Wow , phenomenal, another class of drummers is what he is
I’d love to see you react to Blake Richardson from btbam- he’s got some good quality videos of parallax!
Hope you've checked out the album now. It's. Fucking. Mad.
George Kollias and Thomas Hakke..check them out.
Saw them open up for Devin. Totally blown away!👍😘🇸🇪
You should checkout "An Epilogue to Infinity - Obsura - Drum Playthorugh" it's probably one of the greatest technical playing i've seen.
Baard is one of a kind. Wow
I'd love to see your take on Wintersun's Kai Hahti. There's a great video titled Pearl Artist Kai Hahto live w/Reference - The Way Of The Fire (RFP Drum Cam)
it´s Polyrhythm and Metric modulation 14:00
Did he miss china once at 10:03? Based on the head turn afterwards and the face screaming "fuck" I think he did 😁
Baards use of polyrythms are out of this world
Unbelievable. Amazing.
check out Baards 2022 kickslip episodes downtempo and the uptempo videos. round 5 min into uptempo video is so fucking unreal. thought id pass it along. Hes a beast of a drummer for damn sure
Hey great break down of this song, its a wonderful song by a really unknown but great band. Keep up with the great videos!!!
P.S. its 4 + 4 + 3 so 2 bars of 4/4 and 1 bar of 3/4
You should check out Troy Wright w/ Plini- maybe Every Piece Matters (the video has most of the drums in it).
Just found your channel and appreciate your videos!
Some recommondations:
Matt Greiner - Paramount
Chris Turner
Jay Weinberg - Unsainted
Mario Duplantier (He's drumming is godlike 😍)
You are probably right about 11/8 or something like that, I would classify this as 22/4 which is basically the same thing.
22/16...
@@simmylein81 352/256...
Watch Yogev Gabay's video on the song. It's in 11. Probably 11/8 from what I gather.
11/4. Quarter note is getting the pulse not eighth. I break it up into 4+4+3
Check out Sebastian Lanser playing an Epilogue To Infinity
Am I the only one who's going to point out how Pat is stunningly gorgeous in every possible way? I mean, look at him. LOOK AT HIM!
Hahaha probably, but thanks!
@@PatFlanigan Well now that's a shame. Your videos are great, thanks for that!
You need to check out the band Car Bomb the song is Spirit of Poison.
The whole song is in 11 broken down in 4 4 4 3, but some of the drum parts doesnt resolve until 22 or 44
wow - thanks
