The Voice And Pelvic Floor Connection - Don't Let A Lump In Your Throat Get You Down!

  • Medical gaslighting can be pretty common, but especially when it comes to conditions that impact the voice to pelvic floor connection. One of those is the feeling that you have a lump in your throat when you swallow or are at rest - BUT - you cannot visibly see or feel it from the outside.
Here's some things your practitioner may check to rule out/in:
    vocal nodules and/or inflammation
    narrow airway
reactive airway i.e. asthma or other cause
    thyroiditis
    thyroid or lymph nodules
    cancers of that region
    autoimmune issues
heavy metals or other metal poisoning
    hormone balance
    glucose levels
    liver function
    GERD
    Silent reflux (larynopharyngeal reflux)
Unchecked or untreated trauma and stress
But, if all this is clear, you may end up with a diagnoses like "globus pharyngeus" or muscle tension dysphonia.
The origins of globus pharyngeus condition are sketchy, with it originally being called "globus hystericus" (associating it with hysterical personality types of a certain, ahem, female gender, especially at menopause).
This was not changed until 1968, so chances are, you could still be left with no answers - and a lump STILL in your throat - even after a visit to the ENT, SLP, DDS, or other practitioner that deals with the head and neck.
One thing I have noticed, by working in a team approach with all of the practitioners above, is that often a pelvic physical therapist or occupational therapist is missing from the orofacial team. In addition, quite often, the first line of treat is a PPI - a reflux med - instead of looking at less invasive and more sustainable long-term solutions like orofacial therapy - pubmed.ncbi.nl...
This video goes over what could be one of the many causes of the "lump in the throat feeling," which I personally had for over a year, and which stopped my vocal career dead in its tracks for well over that.
Turns out - in my case, my vocal cords and entire thyroid area were ALSO clear - but I STILL had the lump in my throat. What to do?
Enter the voice to pelvic floor connection. Turns out - there were some higher level orofacial, diaphragm, and pelvic floor issues that, with a little TLC, worked themselves right out, and left my voice even stronger and better than it was before. My vocal range increased, my effort decreased, and my frequent laryngitis disappeared.
I am not saying this single video will do that for you, but here are a few considerations I give folks to think about when it comes to tackling a chronic "lump in the throat" that has been cleared by the ENT and/or SLP.
    First, have you:
    mastered this breathing technique
mastered complete relaxation of the "strap muscles"
mastered a 6 count inhale and exhale while using the first 2 techniques?
had a pelvic practitioner clear your pelvic floor to make sure it's not also contributing to your lump in your throat? (not on video obviously, but you can find a therapist by reaching out to www.garnerpelvichealth.com)
Watch the video to see how it's done!

I have been waiting for this for over 30 years.
I ‘lost my voice’ after emergency surgery over 30 years ago.
I was a classical singer. I have had various physical therapies which were unhelpful. I had to change the direction of my life completely. since then I have difficulty speaking - needless to say, I am totally unable to sing anymore. In 2019 I was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia. Not much help for that except Botox which I chose not to have. I have always believed that there was a relationship between the pelvis and the voice but have never been able to find a therapist who agreed and with whom I could work. I am now 74 and still very keen to be able to speak without effort. You are an angel . Deep gratitude.

wow. I stumbled into your work as I'm into my tenth month of not being to walk functionally after an ankle & foot injury that is just not healing. After many therapist of various sorts, it is now clear that the injury is actually a symptom of dysfunction in my entire chain, starting at c1 and c2. It is no small feat to restore one's entire body just to be able to walk again, but here I am. Your work gives me much needed resources and much needed hope. Thank you for making this work accessible to the public.

There’s not any way of avoiding this ‘ physical’ therapy, I suppose I got to challenge myself to actually do the exercise . Create a new habit which would free my body and probably my mind.
At least I tried to practice it with you so it’s in there somewhere now.
    Thanks for the reminder.

Happy to have stumbled upon your video. I wish modern medicine would get these global connections. Im trying to learn to help myself after 20 years of medical gaslighting. My body musculature is so imbalanced and creating spinal herniations (with chronic neuropathy), voice cracks, jaw & teeth pain, chronic myalgia, etc…..Online courses have taught me more than local PT. Just this year learning proper breathing. I see you crossing your legs. Perhaps a video on such habits and what we can do to un-need them. I recognize my physical & emotional habits, but i dont what to do to correct them/ counter condition. ❤

Hi. Thank you. I had trouble with your explanation as my rib cage is not normal nor my hip nor my jaw. I am happy to have found you but even my breathing with decades of Pranayama is not right due to structural issues. I think there were problems in my mothers womb and it’s mostly a fascia problem. I have an oral myofunctioal therapist and she’s great but I thank you for your channel as these are things no one in all the decades since the 80s has ever addressed despite my complaints of being badly torqued to the right, can’t chew and swallow properly, neck , jaw , hip problems. You are the first person I’ve seen to put so much together. Thank you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Thank you so much - guessing I really could do with some practitioner help.. 10yr goiter with nodules & cyst, whiplash/too-straight neck with apparently degenerating C4&5, breathing improving, tho right shoulder injury 25yrs ago not fully healed & shoulder blades 'wing' also put on lot of weight last few years from stress/ cortisol, insulin resistance, menopause.. & back pain & pelvic or cervical prolapse not sure which.. & some other things incl chronic fatigue, a lot of dental trauma, head injuries, knees, foot neuropathy & skin condition.. &late diagnosed autistic, adhd & cptsd - which has been very useful. But I feel a right mess! And body not seeming to respond to healing efforts. So much for my intentions to age gracefully! And I'm 'only' 54. Thank you again for illuminating this area of the puzzle.. I saw a contact link in the description section I'll look again.. ❤

The rib party trick, invoked spasms, right under my hands. I have mostly neck breathing and shoulder pain. just became aware of this through searching you tube for help, and finding your videos
I don’t seem to have any back rib flare, so no rib expansion that way and spasms. I’m a small strong ex dancer. This is giving me hope, and I’m so discouraged. In too much pain and dysfunction. Tired. ❤

When I started belly breathing I found it very difficult until I ran across a video that suggested look at it as if it is a pitcher of water. First it's empty .... it fills from the bottom up as you pour in water. That is what you need to feel. From the bottom up. I still find it difficult and seriously have to concentrate on the breathing and only the breathing.

Thank You❣️ is the back of the nick also important when it comes to the breathing and pelvic floor?
I’ve done the massage on three front of my neck (as You explained) but I can feel my neck is tensed on the back, both sides of the spine.. are there some exercises for the back of the neck also on You channel?
Thank U for sharing your knowledge 😘

    • @DrGingerGarner
      @DrGingerGarner  2 месяца назад

Great question! The back of the neck is incredibly important when it comes to the breath/voice and the pelvic floor, yes. Maintaining painfree neck range of motion is a critical part of maintaining voice and pelvic floor health - as well as not the muscles supporting it. Eye strain, breathing difficulties like allergies or asthma, or a deviated septum, for example - can also cause chronic over recruitment of the muscles in the back of the neck and spine. Any movement of the neck essentially becomes a stretch. I'll try to explain this concept more in a future video! Thanks for the great question!
