5OCT Edit: Unfortunately I have to address this. This video is specifically about the tiny area of Chimney Rock. If you heard "there's no looting, there's no bodies or smell" this is in strict reference to the street we were on in the video. I'm not discounting the devastation in other parts of WNC. There IS looting. There ARE bodies being discovered elsewhere. I just spoke with the owner of Featherheads. I recorded her business in this video downtown. She says the rumors are BS about her town Chimney Rock that she has been in for three decades. This video is the epitome of destruction. It's obviously bad, we need help in this area, and I'm not downplaying the hurt and devastation anywhere else. She also gave me this organization as a safe/legit organization to donate to for Chimney Rock: shorturl.at/qFcmB 8OCT Edit: During the interview at minute 11:35, I speak with Chelsea. Her husband Andy Wells is also in the house. "The Wells Family has organized this GoFundMe to benefit Andy (Western PA Native-“Go Steelers”) and Chelsea (Western NY Native-“Go Bills”) who have experienced a total loss of their home and possessions." - Here is the link below. Please consider donating! gofund.me/8333f0ad 20OCT Edit: Gus and his dog Bandit were found deceased underneath debris near Chimney Rock. facebook.com/share/p/wxSNFd4TZMFccAzd/ I think a lot of people won't know what conspiracy I'm speaking of but it went viral so I had to ask questions to clear the air. It was starting to cause anger and confusion about what was REALLY happening in Chimney Rock. I was embarrassed to even ask the workers there but I did. Our focus shouldn't be on taking viral conspiracies as FACT but focusing that energy on helping the people of this region. I did 10 miles on foot this day to get to Chimney Rock. It wasn't easy. Anyway, resources below: Edit: I've made my strava route public if it helps anyone. I'm not sure if you need an account or not to see it because it won't load for me if I'm logged out: strava.app.link/FCEVnt3OqNb A lot of people have been asking how they can help. Here's what I saw October 1st: I think the area is starting to get saturated with very legitimate help. I'm not sure how many more hands on deck are needed but I could be wrong. Water is the obvious thing needed since water systems have been compromised/contaminated so if you can find a reputable organization to donate to for water and food, that's a good idea. I was in Swannanoa this morning - they were hit HARD. The river swept through there killing people, reducing homes to rubble, and destroying businesses. I saw random people there just setting up tents with water, food, coffee, snacks. I think that's a great idea as people are in clean up mode, exhausted, sad and they need these things - they can't get these items anyway because maybe their car was crushed, their road is washed out, power is out so grocery stores are closed, etc. People need fuel for their generators (lines are hours long at the stations that are open). There are communities stuck on top of mountains due to their only line of access being completely destroyed with no hope of it being fixed anytime soon. They're requiring air drops and rescues and these guys seem to be doing a good job if you'd like to donate - Aerial Recovery Group (links below). Wellness checks in the region are a good idea. A friend sent me www.unitedway.org/ as a way to sign up to do wellness checks if you're local. I'm not sure how that organization works but it's an idea. You can also look in forums and see people asking about specific addresses. Crazy thing is, this is just a few communities. Asheville, Hendersonville, Burnsville, this whole region, needs assistance. People are coming to help in big ways now, though. I met a group down in the river today from Myrtle Beach, a search and rescue team. I talked with some Cajun Navy people on side by sides today. The more the merrier. Aerial Recovery Group: secure.givelively.org/donate/aerial-recovery/2024-hurricane-helene-disaster-response Instagram: instagram.com/aerialrecoverygroup?igsh=MTM2eGY1bXFxcnh6Ng== Many people are asking what they can bring or what to donate. It's hard for me to answer that. Please go on facebook and search for a reputable organization, where they are, and what they need. Someone like local churches, Samaritan's Purse, Cajun Navy 2016, etc. There are a lot of good organizations here right now but I don't know them all.
Thank you so, much for doing this. I'm going to share this with timestamps so maybe we can calm down some of the anger. Here in Southern WV, we are hearing horror stories about our brothers and sisters in Southern Appalachia. Maybe this will help them focus more on help instead of anger and fear!
@MarkHuneycutt please tell me how I can get numerous cases of adult men and women's clothing and a few cases of boys clothing down to your area. I am in PA and I don't have much cash myself but I have hundreds of pieces of good clothing-especially alot for the upcoming colder months- that I want to donate to the people of WNC. Please help me to help them? I lost both my parents in 2022 and I still have all of their clothes, some brand new! Thank you!
Keep up the good work! Getting the word out through people's stories of the storm and survival are important to giving others hope. Durham, NC based and are sending up as many supplies as we can manage to Western NC.
And the main stream News and government will access his video to do their job on the cheap and claim it cost billions to inspect and determine how to make the roads better. And if what they do fails they will claim that it was inadequate coverage that caused their mistakes.
John Kerry all the while wants social media communication[free speech] shut down. Cell tower [still standing] back up systems failed? Did all the cell towers wash away or were they in mudslides? Does this show how widespread the total devastation really is from the Southern Appalachian Mountains to the Northern Appalachian Mountains ?

Sorry for your loss. Having lived thru the Blizzard of 78 and flooding by the ocean I have a fraction of the idea of what yall are going thru. We got hit hard back then but this is 100x or greater the damage. Our government needs to divert ALL Ukraine and other foreign aid to right here at home!!!!

Hi, we were in Chimney Rock , across from Rainbow bridge when the flood came thru. Our car is embedded in the house across the street. truly scary, as soon as they cleared the bridge, we walked across to get help. Your video really captures the destruction. Thanks for posting
@@MarkHuneycutt Yes, we were there during the storm. We tried to get out before the flood, but all roads were already blocked by down trees. So we backed tracked to the house. the flood waters came so fast there was no escape once it started. it seemed to have come from 3 directions. Down the road from chimney, around a bend and then across the street from the raging river.
Can you confirm whether the story I heard is true that the town of Chimney Rock had a "town meeting" and were told that the government is taking the land and everything will be bulldozed?

It's good that there isn't a bunch of news crews on the ground getting in the way. His impact on foot and an ATV is a lot smaller than several vehicles full of news equipment. I've played in those mountains for many years. Its a poor region like much of Appalachia but it is absolutely gorgeous scenery. Enough so that we bought our retirement land there, and the people are just salt of the earth. I'm in eastern NC for a few more years, and churches and schools like mine are all collecting and staging HUGE amounts of supplies for them - I'm taking a trailer full tomorrow, and my wife, children, and I are already signed up for volunteer help over Thanksgiving - we were heading there with a cabin rental anyways, and we cannot think of a better way to spend Thanksgiving than helping some of those people have a LITTLE to be thankful of: Their fellow citizens.

The truth shall set us free, or maybe our fears. :)I just see such progress being made by many hands, but this will take years. So sorry for everything that so many have lost and of course mostly the lives lost. Bless you all I hope this can come back in a quick helpful way for everyone. Thank-you for taking us with you!
To all my fellow southerners who are reeling from this devastation right now: I wish I had more than just my prayers and what financial donations I’ve been able to make to offer you. If I could take the time off work to come help rebuild, I’d be there in a heartbeat. This stopped just south of where I am, and my heart is torn in two to see y’all suffering like this. Every single person who has been affected by this has been on my mind nonstop. Again, I wish I had more to offer. May God bless each and every one of you.
My grandfather lived between Boone and West Jefferson, North Carolina. I spent lots of time in all the towns along the Blue Ridge Parkway from Boone down to Ashville growing up. To see these images of North Carolina is just crushing my spirit. My heart aches for the people affected by the devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene.
Thank you for providing such a peaceful and honest account of the area so devastated by the hurricane. The people impacted and their resolve are absolutely inspiring!
I have been hunting a Really Good Video of the Damage at Chimney Rock, THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST FOOTAGE I HAVE SEEN YET .. Made me Cry... What you're doing and the places you're getting to is amazing. We don't see or hear any of this on the news..you're very respectful and thorough. Thank you
Hey Mark, I know this will get buried in the heap of comments but I just want to say, you deserve some kind of award for these videos. Absolutely the best coverage of the aftermath that I have seen anywhere. At some moments it almost feels like a video game with the main character walking around a post-apocalyptic waste-land. Thank you for bringing such visceral footage to the public eye and doing it in a way that is respectful to the citizens of the area and not in typical sensationalized RUclips fashion. I am proud to call you a Paramotor brother.
When you look at the Post Office, the shop to the left is where my daughter-in-law worked until 2019-early 2020, when she had to stop working for health issues. Granddaughter was a waitress part-time until shortly after she graduated from high school in 2018, across the street at the River Walk restaurant. When we visited that area in 2012, they had just re-opened that road between Bat Cave and Chimney Road. A lot of rain had caused a land slide or two that closed the road. Thanks for the walk through, Mark. I'll have to tell my son about your videos.
She also gave me this organization as a safe/legit organization to donate to for Chimney Rock:

8OCT Edit: During the interview at minute 11:35, I speak with Chelsea. Her husband Andy Wells is also in the house. I think a lot of people won't know what conspiracy I'm speaking of but it went viral so I had to ask questions to clear the air. Anyway, resources below:
Edit: I've made my strava route public if it helps anyone. I'm not sure if you need an account or not to see it because it won't load for me if I'm logged out:

A lot of people have been asking how they can help. Here's what I saw October 1st:
I think the area is starting to get saturated with very legitimate help.
Aerial Recovery Group:
secure.givelively.org/donate/aerial-recovery/2024-hurricane-helene-disaster-response
Instagram: instagram.com/aerialrecoverygroup?igsh=MTM2eGY1bXFxcnh6Ng==
Many people are asking what they can bring or what to donate. It's hard for me to answer that. Please go on facebook and search for a reputable organization, where they are, and what they need. Someone like local churches, Samaritan's Purse, Cajun Navy 2016, etc. There are a lot of good organizations here right now but I don't know them all.
God Bless you and keep you safe. 🙏
Thank you so, much for doing this. I'm going to share this with timestamps so maybe we can calm down some of the anger. Here in Southern WV, we are hearing horror stories about our brothers and sisters in Southern Appalachia. Maybe this will help them focus more on help instead of anger and fear!

It's what allows people to rebuild over and over instead of feeling like the world is out to get you and giving up. The crudeness of the language makes it harder to take but the sentiment makes sense. We are a very insignificant part of a vast universe steeped in randomness and chaos. Sh*t is happening all the time, don't take it personal when it happens to you, keep your chin up and help your neighbors. This person is probably just trolling but this outlook has gotten me through quite a few tough times.

The infrastructure damage is beyond belief. Im in california where we have had our own disasters but i had no idea how bad flooding can be. Thank you for posting.
As a Citizen Journalist you are documenting the history of your area not only for now but, also for the future. There was not one single story on the front page of the New York Times today about what's going on or not going on in the area. Which makes your videos all that more important for the world to see.
Tremendous respect for you posting this. No politicizing, no editorializing. Just going in, showing what happened, and speaking to the people that are there in a friendly conversational manner. Thank you.

That is just so insane, the amount of damage there!! I’m a former wildland firefighter from California so, no stranger to seeing completely devastated areas, flood damage hits different. It like she said “it used to be land And now it’s just gone!”
As a Canadian who has been there over a dozen times, my heart goes out to the good people of Chimney Rock and the entire area devastated by the floods. Canadian volunteers are down there helping, I wish I was there helping too . . .🕊️
That nice lady that lost her entire home, she also cared that she lost all her grass. She has such a good attitude and outlook.
I hope her cat is okay.
Yeah that was a lovely little place they had. I hope things turn out satisfactorily for them.
Grass? The whole lot is gone! Her home is teetering on the edge of a cliff now.. where is she supposed to rebuild at? Open her back door and fall to your death on the rocks. That’s very dangerous.

You're doing a great job Mark.
I can understand why people wouldn’t want random people rummaging through their property, homes , cars , not everyone is there to help and it’s easy to take advantage of others loss. Thank you for the nice clear video.
I can see why people are being very weary. The poor Lahaina victims were forbidden to visit their homes months and complete strangers went through their property and remaining possessions. Talk about insult to injury 😢

This is the best coverage I've seen. Honest, non-dramatic (heaven knows the situation is dramatic enough!) and matter-of-fact. Thank you for showing us what is going on in a non-hype way.
Unfortunately not everyone, or even very many, feel like you do. If hype and drama didn't sell, mainstream outlets wouldn't do it. As long as demand exists, supply will keep coming. They think they don’t have to, because they think they have already stolen this election too. But we are watching. God bless all of you.
Social media is doing a pretty great job of letting people see what really is going on there. I live in southern NC & have been seeing great coverage since last Thurs. of everything that's gone on in NC & Tn. Not so much Fla & Ga. but we have seen some.
The woman in yoga wear is in ABSOLUTE shock. She is in high adrenaline mode trying to hold it together by disassociating/disconnecting from the harsh reality of it. It may take her a year to cry?
@@exposinginsanity That’s exactly what I said. So many of our neighbors are the same-their bodies are in surge mode just so they can power through. If they stopped even for a minute, they might not be able to recover. Others are in shock, paralyzed and dissociated, or falling into sobs on the side of the road.
I’ve never hugged so many strangers while they cried, but now it feels like a kind of healing super power we all secretly possess and should offer each other wherever needed and as much as possible.
