this is great, as an actor, with a history of TMJ and breathing issues, I have def had issues talking and def am a 'psoas speaker' this has really helped me to be aware of this!

Dr. Ginger, you are amazing! I'm in Wilmington, NC and wish I was closer to you. I'm 71, healthy and thin, but I have struggled for years with chronic pain in my hip, pelvis, neck and shoulder. I have tried everything and now that I am retired and not as stressed out, I'm improving. So far, my best self treatment has been somatic stretching and Egoscue pain free movements. Your methods make so much sense as I know my breathing is restricted and my jaw is always tight. When I get upset or stressed about anything, the pain immediately returns. For a while I thought it was all in my head.. But I see now it's years of tensing. I will try all your exercises and I thank you dearly!

I'm so grateful that your content is surfacing now... I wasn't aware that psoas breathing was a thing but I checked and I'm definitely speaking from the hip and navel region.
The only clue that I really noticed is that I sound on recent recordings like I'm winded and talking through clenched teeth, like a sad mobster, and I know I wasn't like that a few years ago.
I'm going to try to learn the umbrella breathing, I just watched you here demonstrating the area it's supposed to be coming from and it feels so foreign right now. I trust that I will get better with practice. Thanks again.

I'm so glad you are body aware/smart to feel this - so many folks struggle with it. Just identifying that you are is FANTASTIC and a first big step to de-training it!
Let me know how things go - I'm happy to expand on the content! And yes, it does feel VERY foreign at the start.
But for example - this morning during school drop off, I practiced the reverse exhale technique a few times to warm up before belting out some Brandi Carlile 🤣 - and it definitely is a "power up" for your voice! ruclips.net/video/pA-GzpfpZHM/видео.html

Lol, thanks Doc 😊. It's going pretty well. Today I eventually figured that if I reverse engineer the stressy thoughts that go along with the stressy breathing then it'd probably come easier.
So actually, telling myself calmly "alright, here we go, I've got this" has been the best trigger for it to start happening naturally /automatically.
I can only maintain that for about 3 consecutive breaths, before I instinctively want to go back to sucking it into my chest, but I'm pleased, since I was getting zero response in the beginning.
Will keep practicing, and see what changes I notice with my voice. 💜
p.s. thanks for the music recommendation, hadn't heard of her

Yesssssss! This is GREAT progress. Three "nonstressy" breaths is a mountain climbed. Just doing that alone is mastery of mindfulness - you will be in charge of that snarky psoas in NO time! @@bluestripes6037

Wow! This puts more pieces of the puzzle together for me, thank you! I knew breathing was an issue for me (combined with other issues such as TMJ and hypermobility presenting as an extremely inflexible body) and that it connected to the pelvic floor - I hadn't put together that my main job of teaching dance (lots of projected speaking) for over 13 years had been connected this whole time and likely exacerbating my existing issues. Thank you so much!

Goodness knows if you are a teacher having to project your voice all the time - then you definitely need to have a whole person (three diaphragm) approach to your self-care and healthcare. My right side, beginning from jaw till lower back and pelvic, gives me pain all the time. Moreover, I also have scoliosis (lateral curvature) and and hiatus hernia. Even my right vocal cords don't close smoothly and hence causes a tremor or shakiness in my voice. 😢

I wonder if there is a vocal dysfunction where the voice pushes down on the pelvic floor and this is what creates the symptoms?

I have heard this exact description in other cases in my practice. It can be psoas speaking, but only as part of it. My gentle suggestion is to look into polyvagal theory and the concept of vagal tone. What you are describing sounds like a vagal tone issue. I've treated it before many times, with success!
