Those all used the IMA hybrid system, which was much simpler and less efficient and only helped the car get off the line. The current Honda e:HEV hybrid is a two clutch system. Not sure how they'd integrate a manual into that when it allows the 2nd drive motor to drive the front wheels alone. I think this may be where development of the electronic manual shifter comes in.

This Prelude will be a low volume technology demonstrator for the next gen hybrid system which will eventually be incorporated into Honda's current V6 models. It will be sold at a premium due to low volume and I wouldn't be surprised if it's shelved after a few years. Honda will use lessons learned from issues consumers have with this powertrain to incorporate into the next gen Pilot, Ridgeline, Odyssey, and Passport, which will be built in much larger volumes.

Prelude never got Type R treatment... how the hell is Honda marketing this as supposed performance flagship (I think that's their marketing intention...)? They are repeating the same mistake they made with CR-Z. Only proves that Honda doesn't know what they want, nor what customers want. As much as CR-Z was an interesting car, it was utter failure for good reasons.

I think Honda benchmarked 02-06 Honda Accord V6 Coupe. (Prelude Spiritual Successor) That car had a single overhead cam 3.0L V6 with VTEC connected to a 6MT that was reminiscent of the NSX. Very similar proportions and styling, vehicle weight, expected powertrain figures. I’d like to hope Honda can create a lively hybrid powertrain that can comply with 20 years worth of emissions and fuel economy regulations. I’m fine with the car losing top end torque. There’s no need to have 90 mph feel like a comfortable cruising speed.

    I loved my 98 Prelude.
    I also loved my 13 G37x with AWD & 325 hp.
Now I love my Mustang Ecoboost, & I doubt the new Prelude hybrid will have more than 220 hp.
Give it NSX power & a decent price, & it would be considerable.

I thought the nice looking Prius(es) were tuned to be "pretty fun" - electric motors have that torque so people should be able to sprint to the next red light just fine.

I hope Honda keeps making series hybrids rather than going the Toyota route. I have a new hybrid Accord and love the powertrain. The only thing I would prefer is for the engine driven gear ratio to biased 5 mph higher than it is now.

Mercedes-Benz W206 C300's 48V ISG mild hybrid is really good: 1. hope you get to test drive one on/off screen. 2. Honda can instead do mild hybrid because: A. they will be the only Japanese mild hybrid provider in the U.S. B. They do it like AMG does in F1.

I'm really looking forward to this release. My hopes are high for Honda to get it right. The previous 1.5 litre turbo engine was a huge letdown over on the civic, despite early enthusiasm. I think the hybrid will be great if the old CR-Z was a sort of "rough draft" of such an implementation (used to drive it quite a bit and enjoyed it).

Prelude was always a funnel of tech from the NSX that way it could go to the masses. Examples Vtec was developed on the NSX but Vtec was put in the Prelude first so the average person could have. The first car with SH that helped develop Diff technology. Hybrid can be fun if done right

14:00 Honda's series hybrid system definitely makes for worse fuel economy, but I don't think it's the reason for the responsiveness issue. Toyota's hybrids have the same issue, and it's that the engine just keeps shutting off and the battery will only give you about 40hp instantaneously. You can keep the engine running in a Prius by putting it in B mode, and it makes the throttle response noticeably better.
