Agreed. I’ve been at a desk 40-60h per week since 2013. If anybody tells me they don’t need a deep desk, I just say “you ain’t been working long enough. You will” 😂 Resting your elbows on your chair can only get you by so long.
As a physical therapist who treats MANY people for chronic neck pain (typically due to their poor posture and setup at a desk all day), I greatly appreciate this video.
may I ask what is the best desk height compared to my body so that I could sit comfortably? I've heard that I should have one which I can have my shoulder-elbow-hand almost at 90°, is that the correct way to determine the height of fixed desk? I also need to draw too so does the desk needs to be higher?

The Logitech K380 keyboard is an amazing budget alternative for the ones shown in the video. It costs approximately $40 and fulfills all the needs for a minimal and highly functional desktop. The construction is good, with excellent adherence, and the key resistance is just perfect. For desktop audio in my country (Chile), there are very few alternatives under $100 with good overall quality. I have found that only Logitech offers a good option in those price ranges, including a subwoofer. I have been using the Logitech Z211 for about 10 years now, and they are simply fantastic for their cost (like $30 or so). It's a consistently solid product, and I don't doubt that the newer models are as well.
As someone who is starting a new work from home job, this is very valuable to get an understanding of the main essentials needed for an at home office/desk setup. Thank you!
I've learned the desk depth thing really early since I like to have everything mounted onto my desk, this is because I have to move my setup every like 2-3 months idk why but if I don't I feel wrong. I've found the best depth for me is 30in and to use a pad that can easily slide so when I need to write I can move all my peripherals forward.
It's interesting you started out with desk depth because that's been such a complaint of mine since most desks out there are NOT deep enough. Having a desk deep enough for your arms, keyboard, and space to do hand-written activities is crucial. Really nice video.
The fact that desk depth is first makes me so happy. Like for years I was using a 24 in depth and hated it like about a year ago i went up to 30in depth and it was a huge diffrence for one my monitor is now a proper distance from my eyes and two all my gear and gadgets arent slammed onto eachother anymore.
For those that have the trouble of having a great office chair that's inconveniently too low at max height for your desk where your arms aren't placed above your (non-standing) desk in a normal position, look into getting a replacement gas cylinder that can extend higher than the one you currently have and look into how to switch out the cylinder
2:50 I’ve been using Aeron for past 5 years and still in good shape. I feel fairly comfortable sitting for 8 hours with every hour just getting up from the Aeron just to get body moving. It’s worth investment. Premium price but the quality and comfort speak for itself.
definately is not worth the price thats total cope, its mesh, you can buy something with the same economics and comparatively functional materials for a fraction of that price.
To be fair if you enjoy the chair, like its asthetic and can afford the cost then that's a totally justified choice. But its like saying armani is worth the price for practicality. It isn't.
Thank you for your input on the value of the Herman Miller Aeron chair. It’s important to consider different viewpoints, but I’d like to offer some additional perspective based on my personal experience and broader considerations of value and quality. Firstly, assessing the worth of a product like the Herman Miller Aeron chair goes beyond its material components. The chair’s design, ergonomics, and durability are paramount. In my experience, having used various chairs including those from Ergotune, Secret Lab, IKEA, and Amazon, none have matched the Aeron’s longevity and comfort. It’s been a reliable fixture in my workspace for over five years, outlasting its predecessors significantly. Regarding your comparison to Armani and practicality, I understand your point but believe a more fitting comparison might be with high-quality tools or equipment. For instance, professional chefs invest in premium knives not just for the brand but for the reliable performance, durability, and efficiency they offer. In a similar vein, the Aeron chair is an investment in comfort, health (particularly in maintaining posture), and productivity for those of us who spend extensive hours seated. It’s also worth considering the long-term cost-effectiveness. While the upfront cost is higher, the Aeron’s durability means fewer replacements and repairs, ultimately offering better value over time. It’s a classic example of ‘you get what you pay for.’ In conclusion, while I respect your perspective, my experiences and the sustained benefits I’ve derived from the Herman Miller Aeron chair strongly support its value. It’s a practical, long-term investment in workplace comfort and health. If one prefers to opt for a more budget-friendly chair, that’s a personal choice. However, for me, the quality, comfort, and durability of the Aeron chair justify its price, proving to be economical in the long run.
Your point about the chair is really important. I too have an Aeron, but have had the same one since 1997. I have put in tens of thousands of hours sitting in this chair and while I needed to replace the hydraulic cylinder once (over 20 years into my ownership!) it has been the perfect chair. It is expensive, but spread that cost over 10-20, maybe 30 years and it's actually a bargain.
For me, I do advanced professional video editing. Just this week I was able tk get back to 2 monitors with workspace in the same program on both! Not just an extra viewer monitor. Best thing ever! I can see myself doing an ultrawide and a smaller view monitor on top though. But the 2 and just 2 is my preference. Then again, I need my timline to have the full height of the screen just because of the insane amount of work I have to do.
As everyone has an opinion, I am going to give mine: desk depth, without a doubt, but in general whatever allows you to move things around - meaning, wireless keyboard, mouse, headset, charging them from time to time and learning not to leave them without battery at the same time if possible - and whatever makes your posture more conformable - desk that can be lifted, monitor mount, rest for your wrists... I used to buy ergo keyboards, ergo mice, etc, but actually what helps is not repeating the same effort, so being able to move the keyboard around, change the mouse to another hand, switch from normal mouse to trackball and back... Now I watched the video and I am quite aligned with the same ideas. I got an ultra wide monitor for gaming and it turned out to be better for working, but it took quite a few months of learning to avoid hurting my neck. Notice how he uses three mice, two keyboards, several monitors... you really accumulate them with years and never throw them away because you really need to switch from time to time.

Wall papers are super important for me as well:D, I personally think the monitors are another forms of window that placed into the room to see other side of worlds. So its worth to keep refreshing myself from there.
Mac and Windows (or Linux) have different multi-task philosophies. It makes sense that Mac users wouldn't do multiple monitors instead opting for one nice one, the software steers you in this direction. Pros and Cons certainly, but one major Pro of forcing such focus is that it maintains a creative person's flow and concentration on the thing being created.
Is having your monitor against a bright backdrop like that window distracting for you? I thought the typical lighting practices were for ambient light to be between your monitor brightness and the background to reduce eye strain.
I also find that monitor height is important. I use a standing desk (not adjustable, sadly), and like to look forward, not down, as would be the case if the monitor is on its supplied stand (I'm using an iMac), so I have the monitor raised by 10-15cm. You don't appear to have your monitor on your very pretty desk shelf.
Hello! Sorry in advance for the novel.. This is a great chunk of information! I bought a mesh chair after trying my brother in laws for a day and my cousins titan for the same. The titan looked cool and like it should be super comfortable but the mesh honestly felt just as cushioned to me as the literal cushions to my suprise and Its got far more breathability for my sweaty body haha, way cheaper as well, the titans are super expensive and I got a nice mesh chair for a hundo, why tf someone would spend a grand for a branded piece of mesh is beyond me
I bought a padded chair with armrests at a charity shop for £5.00. I've been using it for over two years. The shop always has chairs, but I needed to visit three times before I found the right one.
I need a laptop fan to assist in cooling as where I live it often gets to over 100F during the summer and it can be 85F inside on those days without A/C use.
Nice tips, really elegant setup! I like to have Kinnarps chair, it is robust and lasts 20 to 40 years without breaking. Also some support on the floor to lift your feet up 10-20cm so that your pose will push your lower back against your chair's back. Once you'll try it can't do without. But having using multiple mouses, the apple mouse is just most unergonomic ones, how can you use that?
Have this Sihoo chair and love it, I'm glad they keep releasing new models but keep selling the older M18, I'll end up buying another one down the road
Regarding the IKEA MARKUS chair - I'm not sure why so many desk nerds (NB, meant as a compliment, not an insult) recommend it as a good cheaper alternative to a good chair. I got it myself as that cheaper alternative and wasn't overly happy with it. It is very well-built, and comfortable to SIT on. But the arms are not adjustable (which you actually listed as one of your two main requirements). As a result of this, my right arm constantly aches because it hangs off the desk. I don't think it should be considered a reliable alternative.
1. Bose speakers are not very good. 2. Glad you mentioned actual mechanical keyboards like the Nuphy because the Apple Magic Keyboard is just atrocious. 3. Apart from the mouse models you mentioned, I recommend giving a trackball a try. For me that was a game changer for my wrist issues. 4. Herman Miller Aeron is great, Embody Gaming may even be greater, YMMV.
Great stuff, but are you sure about the Ikea Markus chair ? I have one at my workplace and find it to be horrible for lack of lumbar support, always end the day with back pain 😅
I can highly recommend the Ofinto Active(Chair) for about 300-400 Dollar. It is very ergonomic, comfortable and high Quality. And it is a Swiss Brand. I have one for almost 4 Years and i am very Happy with it.
Desk depth is everything. I have a 26” deep desk and any monitor larger than 27” gives my headaches when using it for anything other than watching videos and movies. I’m fine with this for now since my room is small and a small desk and small monitor is a good fit
Yesterday I found that all modern desks miss the part where you were able to have the keyboard lower than your table desk and I discover that this was right. At some point, the world change and started using flat desks instead of appropriate positions for each item of the office work and I found that desk with keyboard space was the matter most on arm position.
FYA pain is related to not having good posture when typing. You should not rest arms on anything, especially not wrists! Puts undue pressure on those limbs and nerves. Best way is to type (and position your arms) AS IF you were playing a piano - believe it or not this works!! Shoulders down, arms relaxed, elbows at your sides, feet flat on the floor, knees at a 90 degree angle, and arms poised over the keyboard, wrists raised (as if you were playing piano or keyboard). I am 60 and have never had carpal tunnel or any wrist issues and have been typing since I was a teen. Learned THIS method in college (business / administrative program). Also back in the day we had typing tables that came out from the side of the desk - it was LOWER than the desk height ON purpose. No idea why they stopped doing that - made so much sense! I am short (4’11” height) and have never fit ‘normal’ height desks, even ‘ergonomic’ ones. In my current setup at home I’ve added a swing away keyboard shelf under my desk that can be pushed out of way when not in use. In the office I use a height-adjustable desk and bring it down to child’s height (looks funny but it works for me) - that way keyboard is optimal unless I’m standing of course. Please try the piano method - once you’ve got it, you’ll never have any arm or wrist or shoulder issues. Thanks for these videos!
Thank You Oliur. I didn't know they were called the trapezius muscles, nor the main reason for them being sore was right in front of me (and underneath). Gotta fix these areas ASAP.
I gotta disagree with you about not need another monitor, I actually have a similar setup at work, one main monitor and my laptop as the second monitor and a setup with two 24" monitors at home, it's a lot easier to work with two moniors of the same size than one big one and one tiny one. Sometimes I can't barely read whatever on the screen, but when I work from home, I can actually see what I'm doing without leaning forward, not to mention a second monitor can take up lest space than a laptop stand. I used to think using the laptop as second is fine until I tried using two actual monitors. So just get another monitor, if you have the money to buy all the other stuffs, you can afford a monitor.

Hello! Sorry in advance for the novel..
This is a great chunk of information! I have been researching docks for a while, I do similar work to you and have similar equipment, Mac most everything, macbook pro- exception is my monitors. I have two 27" for the same as someone mentioned below- 3D modeling is not fun on just one. What specific model dock do you recommend? Is yours from ANKER? My 27's are QHD 4K. Thank you muchly and please keep the amazing vlogs of helpful info coming! :)
Your desk top links are dead, any alternatives you can find on that site?
Another fan of the apple mouse here, never understood the pure hate for it 😂
Would agree with the gaming chair comment save for secret labs. I think their Titan chair looks good and is also fairly ergonomic.
Dude, this video rocks
I like the side wooden tray you are using for your ear pod and glasses, it's soothing to the eyes, where can I get it from?
Hello Oliur,
Wondering about your webcam setup? It looks you have it behind the display?
Hi Oliur,
Quick question: In the video, you're using an Apple Watch Ultra band that looks really good. Could you please do a review on it?
3:16 my legs goes on top of the table after 30 minutes of sitting.😂
keeping space between your arm and keyboard is life changing suggestion
I have just had uncomfortable trapezius muscle pain and don't know why, huge thanks.
I need a laptop fan to assist in cooling as where I live it often gets to over 100F during the summer and it can be 85F inside on those days without A/C use.
Love this setup!
Amazing video, so helpful. Thanks mate!
2:00 I genuinly thought this was a monochromatic/black&white shot until I saw the plant in the back xD
Video so good, thanks for the hard work Sr.
Hey, which desk shelf are you using on this setup? Grovemade?
I don't think it should be considered a reliable alternative.
glad to see you all healthy my friend!
This is such great advice. You only need one monitor and splurge on the chair not the desk(brand).
Very good video, nice work, and gave ideas, love the adjustable table wish I could one of those here in Honduras.
I have one for almost 4 Years and i am very Happy with it.
always love youyr set up..been following you since 2020
That sponsor is actually really cool 👀
I really like the video. Thank You!
What’s the lamp on the right side of the desk ? I found it very useful to take notes while the room is darker.
great video!
What model Apple Watch and where did you get the watch band?
Desk depth is everything. I have a 26” deep desk and any monitor larger than 27” gives my headaches when using it for anything other than watching videos and movies. I’m fine with this for now since my room is small and a small desk and small monitor is a good fit
Yesterday I found that all modern desks miss the part where you were able to have the keyboard lower than your table desk and I discover that this was right. At some point, the world change and started using flat desks instead of appropriate positions for each item of the office work and I found that desk with keyboard space was the matter most on arm position.
Can't thank you enough for your thoughts!
Looooove the floating monitor!
He is "Jay Shetty" of the Desk Setups.
Great video! Thanks!
When you bought the desk top, did you have to drill your own holes to fasten it to the legs?
Thank You Oliur. I didn't know they were called the trapezius muscles, nor the main reason for them being sore was right in front of me (and underneath). Gotta fix these areas ASAP.
Same here
Learn the anotomy of your own body.
i was legit wondering why my trapezius muscles were aching! wooowww! thanks man.
I've had my Harmon Kardon 2.1 speakers since 2001. They just sound great still.
super nice video man
I gotta disagree with you about not need another monitor, I actually have a similar setup at work, one main monitor and my laptop as the second monitor and a setup with two 24" monitors at home, it's a lot easier to work with two moniors of the same size than one big one and one tiny one.
I also have a pait of those BOSE. Best PC speakers ever, but I do need to drive it with an external DAC to get the best out of them.
The Aeron crippled me, important to get the correct chair for you
Hi. How do i keep my macbook open and use the studio display at the same time? Also how to use it as a second monitor?
And ive been wondering, when the macbook is connected to the studio display at all times, doesn’t it effect the battery ? Been worried on this bit as i don’t have a mac studio
4:00 oh 100% too 😂, I have gone back to one monitor and then my laptop display - that’s it.
This was actually a good video, no ads or nothing just what you should look for when making your home setup
It was an ad, but very discreetly. When you are promoting 2k/4k/6k (6k in this video) you are in fact advertising a lifestyle, pushing an agenda even if you're not promoting a specific product. Just look at all of the links in his video information, he's getting money off every single click. Wake up people.
Do you have the link to the light that is sitting on your desk on the right side.
which size of monitor should i buy ? 27" or 32" ?
