    Hi Folks,
    I started this video over 6 months ago, recording everything back in November. Unfortunately, *checks calendar* I'm releasing it in June, long after the TOTK hype and the Game Awards window I had hoped for.
    There's a reason for this delay and my recent inactivity. Trigger Warning - Sad comment incoming.
    At the end of 2023, I became more active on RUclips after years of inactivity. I was really happy with the videos I made and had even quit my full-time job to focus on the channel and some other freelance projects. It was a bit scary, but I felt positive about this new direction.
    Sadly, right after leaving my job, my cat Logan (featured in the best Shadow the Hedgehog design video) passed away. Then, a month later, my Mum passed away after a long battle with cancer. As you can imagine, these losses turned my life upside down.
    These events forced me to slow down, which is why the video I'm releasing today took so long to complete.
    The short version is, I'll be okay. I don't need sympathy; it's been hard, but I'm getting through it one day at a time. I've debated whether to address this on the channel, as I've always valued the audience I've had here over the years. Ultimately, I want you all to know I haven't given up on the channel, and there are reasons for my absence.
    I hope this hasn't bummed anyone out-it's not my intention. Enjoy every day, try to stay positive, and be there for the ones you care about! Become a bald man and rant about the inconsequential logic of the Hyrule Historia.
    See you all soon.
    Mark

    Hyrule Historia implies that Wind Waker takes place during the adult timeline after Link has been sent back to his child days. In other words, he didn't just "fuck off". Its that he literally stopped existing.

    • @Marandahir
      @Marandahir 5 месяцев назад +3

      Yeah. There is no Link in the Adult Timeline because he was poofed out of existence by Zelda using the Ocarina of Time (his memories and his possession of the Triforce of Courage joined with a younger version of himself shortly before meeting Zelda for the first time). So both games are sequels to Ocarina of Time, just following different timeline endings - the past (Child Link or Courage Timeline) and the future (Adult Zelda or Wisdom Timeline).
      The odd timeline out is the Downfall Timeline, or Power Timeline, where Link was killed by Ganondorf or Ganon during the final showdown at Ganon's Castle. This is weird because we don't see this timeline in the ending of the game. That's why many of us think it actually branched off separately, perhaps even before Ocarina of Time due to Cadence of Hyrule time travel schenanigans (implied to take place immediately prior to OoT featuring the same Ganondorf), and leading into Four Swords Adventures and then A Link to the Past instead. But that only works if we throw out the placement of FSA and the Downfall Timeline and assume Cadence of Hyrule as timeline-canon. In any case, Downfall Timeline is DEFINITELY following a version of the Imprisoning War where Ganon beat Link but was sealed by the Sages.
      And none of these are the Imprisoning War of Tears of the Kingdom, which either is an entirely separate timeline splitting off from Skyward Sword due to time travle schenanigans, or else is a recursive Imprisoning War (as we know many characters are reincarnated in this series - Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Twinrova, Malon, Talon, Ingo, Gormon, Biggoron, Postman, Happy Mask Salesman, Mama MuYan, etc).

      For a guy who keeps coming back without reincarnating, I think it's safe to say he might be immortal due to the Triforce of power and doesn't age. His look in WW might just be because every Zelda game interprets him and his design in a different way. TP Ganondorf doesn't look quite as young as Oot Ganondorf, and his execution seen in TP was supposed to be shortly after the events of Oot during the child timeline, when Link went back to the past to rat on Ganondorf then fuck off to Termina. Unless it took years to capture Ganondorf for his execution in the child timeline, it's not really explained. But Ganondorf 7 years into the future still looked younger than TP Ganondorf.

  • @patte5306
    @patte5306 5 месяцев назад +41

    Just gonna try and explain what Hyrule Hystoria meant: at the end of OoT Link defeats Ganondorf, seals him in whatever it was and the goes back in time to when he was a kid. This created 2 timelines, the original one, where Ganondorf is imprisoned, has no Link since he went back, and then Ganon breaks free but there is no hero to defeat him, thus creating WW. The other timeline is the one Link got back to as a child, where MM and TP take place, here Ganondorf is defeated BEFORE he takes over in Ocarina, so the scene in TP with the sages is not a followup to the end of Ocarina. Hope this helped, but i may be mistaken, needlessly convoluted? Yes. Makes sense? I guess.

    • @beyondthecamera333

      No, this part makes perfect sense to me and most fans. It's not that convoluted, especially sine we SEE the two timelines in the final cutscene of Oot. However, how Link to the Past fits into this is when the timeline just completely breaks down. Why did Nintendo make two sequels to Oot, which was meant to be an A Link to the Past prequel? To explain what Hyrule Historia was saying with both WW and TP Gannondorfs being "The Same person".
    Remember when Zelda sent Link back to the past at the end of OOT (So he could tattle on past-Gannondorf and get him into the execution scenario we saw in Twilight Princess)?
    The timeline 7 years in the future from Link's Childhood (the one where Gannondorf did get into the Sacred Realm and took over Hyrule) continued to exist afterwards due to the paradox of Link needing to experience that future to tell the King/Past-Zelda about Gannondorf's plans. So the "Adult Timeline" where Link and Zelda sealed the Gannondorf who became King coexists with the "Child Timeline" where Link got sent back to and got Gannondorf into attempted execution/banishment.
    So they are the same person, just having gone through different events (One having been caught early and then given the Triforce of Power as a divine prank, being far more vengeful as he was denied his chance to rule due to Link and Zelda mocking the laws of time. The other having been defeated more conventionally and having to grow weary and older in a world that the goddesses themselves had to intervene and flood due to Link's soul not having time to reincarnate in the Adult Timeline by the time of his re-emergence)
    Now, the Downfall Timeline is where things get funky, Hopefully the Tears of the Kingdom book's timeline addresses it, especially with Echoes of Wisdom seemingly Kitbashing the Downfall timeline with BOTW/TOTK elements. But at the current moment it's the timeline where link dies during OOT and due to the lack of hero, the world eventually mounts a war with Gannondorf and imprisons him in the Sacred Realm, however Gannondorf having the full Triforce rendering him far more powerful (and permanently in his "Ganon" form),

    My favorite thing about the TotK Ganondorf design is something not mentioned here, that being his mummy form. While his gerudo form looks like a king and demonking looks like an embodiment of power mummy ganon just screams evil. He just looks so unrelenting and terrifying, which fits him well considering he waited thousands of years to return and this form of him ambushes you throughout the game in the form of phantom ganon. The music he has is also amazing, especially all the phases of the final fight.

    Link fucking off in the Wind Waker backstory is just how those people interpeted whst happened at the end of Ocarina of Time. Link didn't leave he was sent back in time by Zelda, just nobody but her knew that and because she sent him away, he and his bloodline weren't there when Ganon eventually broke out of his seal. There sre a lot of questionable things about the timeline, mainly to do with the massive geological shifting between games, but the Wind Waker / Twilight Princess split is actually pretty clear.

      That link, didn't really have much and he ( and links before him) were more like blank slates ( which links were being designed as).
      By that point they could make Links characterization be anything, cause he's already passed the end of his life and passing in his skills to the next incarnation.
      The twilight princess link for instance has quite different though similar, more defined characterization than OoC link. Whom then differs from WW link. They're all still more blank slates but they have different characterizations.
      I don't think the shade does or says anything that out of character for OoT link, especially since we don't really know what he became at the end of his life ( really the only Link we even get that bit of insight on in that smallest smidge at all in in thier later life or after life in this case.)
      The Links overall are ment to be blank slates, so most thier characterization post WW are more subtle. Especially if you compare them to thier triforce reincarnated counterparts, like ganondorf and especially Zelda. Where even the same ganondorf of two timelines kind of operate differently even though his goals are the same each time and we see how vastly each incarnation of Zelda is. Links characterization seems barely there in comparison because he's ment to be more a blank slate character.

    I don't think the artstyle in TWWHD had issues - but the KEY ART for the game did. The key art for Ganondorf in the NGC version has parchment lines and a bushy beard. But in game it was much more cell-shaded and less line-y. The Wii U version preserves the in-game look but not the key art look.
    This is in contrast to Ocarina of Time 3D / Majora's Mask 3D where they updated the in-game character models to line up with the key art released for the game. I much prefer this effort but the motivation behind TWWHD was mostly to test Wii U Gamepad functionality for Breath of the Wild.
    I'd also have to protest that Smash for 3DS and Smash for Wii U allowed you to have TP Ganondorf use the Sword of Sages to fight with. But it was a customization option, not a built-in one like Smash Ultimate has OT Ganondorf using the Space World 2000 Sword.
    I've always loved the Oracles design of Ganondorf, and it's how I imagine him having looked like if they showed him in Four Swords Adventures or A Link to the Past (both games referenced him).
    The 8-Bit Ganondorf from Super Mario Maker looks more like Hyrule Warriors Ganondorf than any other version, to me.
    I love how in Tears of the Kingdom, Ganondorf looks like he could be in Samurai Warriors, as opposed to Hyrule Warriors' Dynasty Warriors inspirationo.
    Now we just need a Warriors Orochi Ganondorf XD

    Link is missing in Wind Waker because he was sent back to the past, leading to Majora's Mask. The timeline he was sent back from (the "future") continued on without him, resulting in there being no hero when Ganondorf was released. This is stated in-game, even without the Historia...

    • @ArtistMarkFlynn
      @ArtistMarkFlynn  5 месяцев назад

      Genuine question, when is this stated? All of my memories relate to the opening where it simply says Link left and Ganon emerged.

    • @Arcadia_warlic
      @Arcadia_warlic 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@ArtistMarkFlynn The opening mentions that Ganondorf took the Triforce (One day a man of great evil found the golden power and took it for himself...), which did not happen in the past timeline that leads to Majora's Mask, since Link had him arrested before he could get to the Sacred Realm. He only claimed it in the future, after which his defeat, Link was sent back in time by Zelda, causing there to be no hero, meaning it has to be in that future timeline. Interviews and the Historia confirm this, but it seems evident from just the prologue alone (it mentions Link as the Hero of Time, even though in the "present", most would not even know Link existed since he cut his own quest short).

    As this video gains traction, I’ve noticed a few recurring comments and questions. Let’s address some of them right here:
    Hyrule Historia Comments: Throughout the video, I make some jokes about the Hyrule Historia. It’s just banter and a running gag. If this humour doesn’t resonate with you, that’s perfectly fine. I personally REALLY ENJOYED doing the goofy face-to-cam stuff for this video and I'm gonna keep it up. The book will be OK with me trashing it.
    Zelda Timeline: Yes, I understand the Zelda timeline, have read Hyrule Historia's depiction of it, this is the official 'canon'. However I personally, just find it to be a loosely tied bunch of stories. Twilight Princess clearly shows its place on the timeline, but this wasn't established when Wind Waker first emerged. Majora’s Mask was the last game released before it, so my reading of the intro was always that it depicted Link heading off on his horse to Termina. However, I'm likely missing a bunch of stuff from Wind Waker that I haven't remembered since these are based on my memories from about 12 years ago. I appreciate those of you chatting with me about this! While I agree I'm probably missing some details, I also think the game itself is quite unclear. I don’t agree that Wind Waker is very explicit about the Hero of Time being sent back, and it's never suggested in-game that the intro cutscene is folklore. That's probably a better reading of the scene, but it's always felt like the Historia made this up after the fact.
    Hero’s Shade: I know the Hero’s Shade is considered 'canon' according to the Historia, but I still think it’s a bit silly. That said, I’m open to the idea that I might be a bit silly too.
    Much love. ♥

    • @PrismaArchives
      @PrismaArchives 5 месяцев назад

      I think the folklore implication in WW is from the fact it mention the Hero of Time is a legend passed down as well as the pictures and hylian text having parrellels to real life folklore past down from civilizations past. It also implies that there were generations between the initial defeat of ganon and when people hoped that link would reappear. I think its just vague enough that I could see people interpreting it as Termina however, WW ganondorf explicitly mentions once again gathering those with the three pieces of the triforce, something he failed to do in the Child Timeline iirc. While I feel the Zelda Team usually doesn't care for the exact details, in many of the games pre BoTW there are clear links (no pun intended) in game to other games in the franchise.
      Edit: Thematically, I feel like it also makes sense where they through them. WW ganon managed to reach the some of the heights that he desired and could lament on his failures whereas TP ganon failed before he had a chance to even reach the starting line in a way that would leave many indignant.

    There's also what may be the first Ganondorf design from the Link to the Past comic in Nintendo Power in 1992, years before Ocarina of Time came along. He looks somewhat like a stock "Arabian Knights" type villain who'd fit in with the cast of Disney's Aladdin, with a vest worn over a bare chest, baggy pants, a bushy beard, and a large scimitar in one hand. Obviously, it's very different from what would come later in the series. But it is interesting how aspects of this Ganondorf version that weren't present in Ganon's design (a sword, a beard, an Arabian vibe, and even a black horse) would be echoed in the games themselves.

    My main problem with TotK Dorf is that all the cool stuff with him happened a billion years ago, so Link has no real connection or knowledge of the guy, and vice versa. I wish he was more present in the current story. That and I got the flashbacks completely out of order so the story was borked from the start.

    Hey, brother! Slight correction at 11:15.
    Link goes back to the child timeline and gets Ganondorf executed. But what happens to the timeline he LEFT (The Adult Timeline?)
    That's the timeline in which Link "left" and Ganon unbreaks his seal. At the end of Ocarina, 2 timelines are created; the one Link saves in the future (leading to Wind Waker) and the one Link saves in his childhood (leading to Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess).
    So, in short:
    Link seals Ganon - Link goes back in time and so 2 timelines are made
    Ganon unseals himself in the timeline he left
    Ganon is executed and chosen by Power in the timeline he went to

The fact the he draws inspiration from all of the previous designs was a good move imo, just as it was overall for every HW character that didn’t reuse their “original” design from whatever game they came from. Watch the end of OoT again. Adult Zelda sent him back in time to relive his childhood (she sent him to before she met him but after the The Great Deku Tree's death, this is evident by the lack of the Goron's bracelet on his wrist. Link warns Zelda about Ganondorf's and with the proof of the triforce of courage, his words led to ganondorf beings arrested and later sealed as shown in a flashback in TP. MM was a direct sequel to that ending where Link goes to look for Navi who fled in the Temple of Time when Link returned to the past.
    Meanwhile the adult timeline still exists because Link closed the door of time when he was sent back, thus disconnecting the link between the future and the past. Also resulting in Link not being around when Ganondorf returned generations/centuries later. Granted with SS lore involved, there should've been a completely different hero to fight against him when he returned anyway if we go by SS lore.

      His scabbard is specifically the Master Sword's, so we know he wielded the Master Sword in the past.
      I doubt it's Skyward Sword Link (and he didn't even exist at the time of Twilight Princess's release).
      So it's either the Hero of Time, or some unknown hero of the past we've never seen in any of the games.
      Or if you still don't like that, you can pretend that the scabbard doesn't mean anything. Although I'm sure a detail like that was considered by the designers.

    I think the reason Twilight Princess Ganondorf appears to much is that it's clearly the best. The menacing staredown as he walks to crush his opponents. Ocarina is a close second and that promo poster is a lot of why. He's moreso a mage while fighting in human form in that game though.
    Haven't played Tears of The Kingdom but I kinda don't like Ganondorf's design. I was really intrigued my the mummified Ganondorf in the trailers but they don't share much resemblance or themes. Also I found BotW's story (of what little there was) to feel a little anime trope heavy, and from what I can gather TotK is more of that. Including Samurai design. Like it's kinda cool but not what I hope for out of a LoZ game.
    I really like Wind Waker's story, and I think Ganondorf's design is fine but I think it's almost lackluster in comparison to the rest of Wind Waker. There's so much in all of the rest of Wind Waker that he's almost too plain in my eyes.

    I have to set nostalgia aside and admit Tears has the best Ganondorf design, normal and demon mode. But I was not fond of his portrayal and the fact that he was a reincarnated Ganondorf. because it feels like there's no history with this particular reincarnation, and I know that's just a matter of preference. With the first teaser reveal, I thought they were setting him up as an ancient evil from an era of Hyrule that was long forgotten due to time, an era we were more familiar with. He would be the one connection to past games. But botw and tears are set so far into the future that Rauru supposedly founded the land of Hyrule again, separate from the kingdom of Hyrule from past games, and this Ganondorf was born in this new Hyrule. He obtained power, he briefly wrecked havoc on Hyrule before Rauru froze him in time and turned him into a mummy. Then when he finally awakens and his body is revitalized, Link kills him 15 minutes later.
    But I guess this is equally as much of a rant about the botw era rather than just about Ganondorf, because I feel like it was a lazy excuse to ignore everything about previous Zelda games. But again, just a preference.

    I think demon king Ganondorf is him using Demise's power to show that he surpassed Demise and Demise's power is his servant to Ganondorf's will rather than Ganondorf being a servant to Demise's will

      odd cause isn't Ganon supposed to be the reincarnation of the demon king Demise's hatred, and thus always fated to do battle with Link and Zelda in his endless conquest for power and to plunge Hyrule into darkness

    Hi 👋🏻 I used to be a heavy collaborator in the Zelda fan community, I ran a Ganondorf fan comic for a few years that got surprisingly popular, so I have some insights from my particular experience in that space
    Preface with saying that I love Ganondorf and think he’s an interesting character… BUT…
    There is a lot of cultural baggage with Ganondorf and the Gerudo as a whole. They aren’t depicted in the most sensitive way, being a hodgepodge of pretty ugly orientalist stereotypes, and while more recent games have attempted to make them distinct from any real-life people groups, there’s still a ways to go (why are they wearing *that* in the desert, etc)
    There’s some old concept art of OOT Ganondorf shown in the HH that is very uncomfortable to look at in today’s world, very glad they veered away from that one
    In particular though a lot of folks, myself included, take umbrage with how Ganondorf’s skin ends up greener and greener in every subsequent game, when his original complexion was, yes, olive, but not nearly as drastic. It’s a frustrating trend, especially in totk where he’s ostensibly still a Gerudo in flashbacks, powerful yes, but not distinct enough to make him *green* like some sort of orc
    I could see his color changing if it were a gradual display of “power corrupts” or that sort of thing, but unless every Gerudo male is just born green, it’s… weird and suspect to a lotta folks
    But hey,,,, at least he’s not a white man jumpscare like in a one-shot unofficial/official ALTTP comic that’s out there lol

    Small resentment, not directly on uploader but more on the term of 'honour'. The ubiquitous loan words of Japan confuse most even to this day. Honour as a substitute for Loyalty, Fidelity, and Military code is honestly poor interpretation. There are videos to clarify 'Bushido' being more analogous with 'Chivalry' two sets of military codes of conduct. With Ganondorf, it makes sense to interpret his faux allegiance as the Trojan Horse, that is fair. He is the antithesis of these nouns. I am stating that 'honour' as a verb for samurai does exist but that there are more fitting terms in this instance since honour in the West's perspective is more on 'status' than a code of conduct. Status being 'renown' and honour is that renown. So essentially the famous OOT Ganondorf kneeling scene is his loyalty (and obvious infidelity). Comparatively, the samurai iteration is doing the same manner. So, when stating "...to turn on his allies at any moment". That is literally loyalty being tarnished.
    Again, nothing towards anyone using the term honour when giving Japanese analogies. It is something that localizers have used too frequently which has been nothing more a blanket description.

    Ganondork doesn't have a good design. He's a big B with a little d. My buddies and I used to give him swirlies in the 3rd floor restroom in 9th grade.
