Fun fact that “Blue eyeshadow” is actually his sunken eyebags, in an art book he taunts Mario by pulling his eye bags down and sticking his tongue at him (which was drawn by kiyotake, Wario’s creator, himself), revealing that the blue rings around his eyes are bags.
They are also supposed to be similar to Japanese Oni with their dark sunken eyes that give a grimace look

I believe that Wario deserves his own animated series at some point in the future. His personality and the situations he gets himself in is a fun, screwball cartoon that’s begging to happen! With Nintendo now willing to bring their IPs into extended media, perhaps one of these days we’ll see one.

A wario cartoon set in diamond city so that the rest of the wario ware crew can show up would be awesome, but i also want two specific characters beyond that: waluigi and captain syrup. If wario wants to be a big name, he needs a sidekick and a nemesis, and these two have already filled those roles in the past, so they would be perfect

A Wario anime with the style of Shake It
I love how in the main series Wario's pretty much alone, but in WarioWare he has several friends who unironically like being around him.

the "rich oil tycoon" look from super rush is so great I hope they continue to find ways to incorporate his greed/love of money into his visual re-designs. I can imagine him tipping his toad caddie one whole coin for lugging his gear around for 4 hours in the heat

Being like a rich oil tycoon (or more accurately, a horrible and typical CEO) is effectively Wario’s schtick now given he is long past being evil Mario and the Wario Land-like games are effectively dead. Heck, in a sense, new Wario games that weren’t one-offs or compilation games outside of Smash Bros. were also dead after Smooth Moves until either Mario Golf: Super Rush or Get It Together, depending if you count this towards games involving Wario or Warioware games.
It was a major revelation when I realized that Mario Power Tennis was the last time Wario has worn long sleeves ever

I gotta say, the best Wario design imo is from Virtual Boy Wario Land. It's pretty much an improvement from the first game in everyway while still being visible in-game. I was kinda sad that you didn't include it tho :/

Get It Together seems like a blast, but Wario's design is too simplified and I think Game & Wario still has the best artstyle... for the Ware franchise, at least. I think his grotesque nature peaked in Wario Land.

I think the series’ artstyle was changed to be more in line with what Rhythm Heaven has, since the two series are made by the same people, iirc.

@@themc3140 Oh yeah I agree. It took a while to grow on me but I've grown to fully appreciate the new art style for the series. I just feel like Game and Wario's approach of trying to make it look more cutesy while sticking with the more inherently crude designs of the characters made it a lot less appealing in my eyes. It's weird really, because I used to love the art style as a kid.
I’ve always preferred his plumber design to his biker design, kind of wish they used his plumber design as his main alt in Smash Bros

I agree, it's a bit odd it's not the default. Smash bros usually uses the most iconic design for the default. No disrespect to the biker thought.
I think it's just because warioware was the characters big thing at the time of release. Makes sense really. If he'd been in Melee, Wario Land or World would've been the focus.

Well now that that's settled on the return of Character Design History, how about a design history on some of those who back up Mario or Wario, like Luigi, Princess Peach, Daisy, Toad, Waluigi, Birdo, or Yoshi, or (not to mention) even Bowser.
I'm deffo doing a few of those at some point!

Not sure if your a fan of no more heroes but the evolution of the main protagonist travis touchdowns design shows how his personality changes throughout the series

When it comes to gameplay sprites, I wholeheartedly agree with WL4. Such creativity and detail with the amount of pixels they are given on that era of handheld devices.
When it comes to character design, definitely prefer biker over overalls. It’s super unique, and I honestly hope they give you the option to use it in future Mario spin-offs as an alt. Wish they’d give Waluigi a unique wardrobe change as well in the future, just to really solidify his blooming personality that’s been emerging from recent games. Wonderful video!
This is a really fun video! I'm surprised you didn't delve more into how his updated appearance has changed within the WarioWare series itself. There was a huge shift in art style going from Game & Wario to WarioWare Gold, with almost all the characters becoming significantly more simplified.
Gotta love Ko Takeuchi art design though since WarioWare Gold he simplified the style of the Wario characters. Works really well on Rhythm Paradise but not so much for Wario still WarioWare Gold was really great hope Get it Together also is.
And yeah really like The Shake Dimension artstyle the most it's just gorgeous to look at the details. Remember seeing and add of the game while zapping and for a second there thought Wario got an animated series which honestly will fit him just right it could be an adventure style series or an slice of life series or both mixing Land and Ware together.
Land 4 pixel art is really good I just have one minor nitpick about it and is that Wario's shoes are fused to his overalls
The GameCube era look is definitive for me.
The wario from power tennis gives me life lmao. Too funny in that game. The intro is so great.
One thing people don’t know, Is the jacket’s logo on the back In Smash Brothers (“Hurry Up!!”) is EXCLUSIVELY on the jacket in Smash. If you go back to the Wario Ware series, you’ll notice- NO logo!

Wario and Donkey Kong are some of my favorite Mario characters. Compared to Mario, Peach and Toads they just have so much personality to them. Their games as well just have a lot of personality to them, and thankfully they both have fantastic gameplay to back them up.
I really hope that Wario Land games get another day in the sun. I'd love to see more of the greedy beefcake treasure hunter anti-hero.

I can’t get enough of it honestly, it’s so deranged and sloppy but so powerful and stumpy. It’s THE Wario to me. Taking his brute strength to a new height, making him uniquely weird, and (something I understand why its gone but wish it came back in the designs) keeping the idea of him being a hilariously mutated caricature of Mario
Man jumps and traverses the land on the same 2d plane as ol Mario, but he’s got half the grace and none of the class and you can’t help but love it

I really hope they bring the Wario land games back, imagine if they made a Wario land game where you could play as Waluigi either like donkey kong country where you swap out on the fly, or by having two players playing at once. Waluigi deserves a chance in the spotlight.

My favorite Wario design is the one used in 2014 and 2018's Smash Bros entries. Design is usual but with more realistic texture. Goes to BOTH his plumbing outfit AND his biker suit.

God I adore Wario, Diamond City, and everything WarioWare. The whole universe is so good.
I'm probably the only one that prefers his Wario Ware design over everything else. It's got a unique look and charm that doesn't just look like some Mario recolor. But I say this while also mentioning I greatly prefer Wario Land over Wario Ware.

If Nintendo ever made a Wario anime, they should take one of these two directions:
WarioWare anime: just make a Kochikame version of Diamond City and his characters. I mean, Wario is practically Kankichi Ryotsu but in videogame form, so make him like Ryotsu.

Wario's definitely one of my favorite characters in the Nintendo pantheon, and I must say, my favorite design has to be Shake It. The whole game is just unbelievably gorgeous, and it exactly depicts the Wario in my head when I was playing the Game Boy titles as a kid.
I do like the design from Warioware, but I am somewhat disappointed that the nose-picking flatulence-joke version of the character seems to have overwritten the "Boisterous greedy macho" Wario from the older games in the public consciousness
I reckon we will revisit Wario Land some day. I hope so at least.

Surprisingly, the Virtual Boy Wario land is fun. It also has great sprite art. It is monoscale, but still looks great. Obviously if you want to play it, emulate, and set the palette to grey. It'll be easier on your eyes

Biker Wario is the best Wario Design. It gave him identity far from mario's shadow and the color scheme is so appealing to the eye.

Wario world was the best imo because it felt most lilke wario from the voice clips to how you defeat enemies and collect treasure. It made me love the character.

Would be great to see the Shake Dimension, and lots of other games appear on the Switch - especially as it has motion controls.
His best design is the one on the gameboy game boxes. The original design is my personal favourite though.
My personal favorite Wario design is his Wario Land 4 sprite. Mainly, I like its striking color palette and expressive animations. My second favorite is his pre-rendered sprite for Mario kart 64 and Super Circuit.

@@ArtistMarkFlynn Well, it's actually less about how he's designed, and more about how he's characterized/represented. Though not gonna, there is something unsettling about his Smash 4 render that I can't put my finger on...
Honestly, there's a few things that I don't like about his portrayal in Smash. For one, it feels like Wario Land was sidestepped completely in favor for WarioWare. Sure. He has his iconic shoulder bash (that they removed in Smash 4 for some reason), his victory theme, and the ruins theme from Shake It, but as far as I'm aware, that's pretty much it. There's also his character in general. I'll admit though. It looks like they've been slowly fixing this. Before Smash, when I thought of Wario, I didn't think about a farting guy with Mr. Game & Watch-esque animations who also happened to have this weird lockjaw.
Okay. Those are some of my thoughts. Sorry if it seemed like I was rambling. I am honestly really tired right now lol.

I am just 4 minutes into the video but you had just spoken about his nose and I am surprised no reference was made given its resemblance to garlic which I think is purposeful as I believe I remember reading that garlic considered evil or something like that in the Japanese culture.
Or I'm just talking out of my ass which is totally possible because I am not as smart as I think I am.
That would make sense considering how often they actually talk about garlic lol
For Wario land: Wario Land 3 was peak design and personality. He didnt display that arrogant attitude from Shake it. He got flanderized as soon as Wario World dropped and Sakurai turned him into a grossy character for Smash bros. (Only for sport spin offs games to copy afterwards)
For Warioware: I say Twisted was peaked design for him and the WW cast. WW Gold just seemed.. like a chibi ish decline.

If at all, the only heroic Warios are from 3 and SPECIALLY 4, he helps Shokora escape and shares a laugh with her at the end before the kiss...
The Design team for Shake it have gone on to state that they really considered him to be a hero when developing the game, they attempted to make him more macho and play up to his masculinity ...They added those minor elements to his design to try and emphasise this, but of course, he's still Wario at the end of the day lol.
@@ArtistMarkFlynn Hoh , I remember that interview, that was in counter to the "farting goblin" most people who only know Wario from Smash and spinoffs seem to take him for. It gets brought up pretty often for people who dislike the Smash version and miss Wario Land. I do agree Wario gets some goofier moments in 3 and 4, but in 4 in particular he's at his most macho too, taking out exercise gear, flexing and whatnot.
EDIT: Going over the interview, in the very same thing they stat Wario is "so uncool he kinda becomes cool" and that he makes all sort of trouble and takes what he wants, which does not strike me as heroic in the slightest but... sure! Whatever.

I don't absolutely hate it but do agree there's too much farting going on. I love that he has the little wario land shoulder barge but other then that the moveset is quite odd
