Spyro the Dragon is another one of those characters that I adored as a child, but for some reason never ended up spending much time with. It was one of those games I’d watch a friend play rather than playing through myself, young me really enjoyed a live action let's play.
But regardless, the Spyro games always stood out to me and the character definitely burned a memorable hole in my heart. As I aged and went through game shops over the years I’d always make sure to look at the characters games to see what was occurring, never paying too much attention, but always noticing slight differences if they did arise.
Like all other good 3D Platformers, Spyros main strength was that of his strong character design, and this was carefully developed. However, initial sketches of the character were not what I expected, they were much more fitting of what you might expect from a cartoon inspired traditional dragon. Many of these designs were bulkier and frankly, uglier than what the finished concept would end up as. Spyro was intended to be as a mascot that would appeal to all with a bratty character to boot but these traditional dragons that stood on two legs didn’t emphasise these traits quite enough at this early stage.
At one point the character was a green Dragon named Pete, how original. Disney says hello, here is my cease and desist. Can you imagine if this had happened? Disney would have come after them quicker than they took down gifs of Baby Yoda.
Thankfully the team saw sense and developed a character that was visually more appealing and far more unique.
Purple scales were decided upon as many of the locales would be lush and green. As similarly mentioned with Crash Bandicoot, it was essential that this character was visible against the games environments. Speaking of Crash, him and Spyro do seem to share quite a lot of similar traits and historical moments, they both tried to establish themselves as the PlayStation mascot, they both struggled after they left the platform and they both have had triumphant hoorahs in the modern day. Given their history, I may bring up Crash a few times in this video too, it just feels right. Is that a good enough excuse to reuse this clip again?

That's because it was the 20th aniversery of Spyro The Dragon for the PS1.
I hope that F*king much that the "Legend of Spyro" Triology will be re - relesed for PS 5 (or best PC). I loved the Game/s, bad is, I only got PS 3 so the other 2 Triology Parts I´ve never been abled to play (only watched YT - Lets Plays). Also the Game/s itself is/are better (in my Opinion), than any newer Game/s which have came out (in the second "Games" in this Sentance i dont mean only Spyro okay?). (Talking about DotD, the only one i´d played) I´d like the Mix out of Exploring, Fighting and the Story itself was great, the very top of all (for me) was the LOCAL Multiplayer (which no Console Game has anymore :C ). Really excting is, i got it in dec. 2018 in a Gamestop (even their website said "Not on Storage" and i was short about givín up hope). That shows us that old Games can still be good or even better then newer Games! Whos with me?

One detail about his modern design, a reason they didn’t think classic Spyro could be taken anywhere else, are his thumbs. The classic design had three digits per leg, modern Spyro has four digits on his fore legs.

Makes sense. Most animals walk on their toes so that means they have 4 digits touching the ground and a fifth somewhere up the foot to help grip stuff. Humans actually are quite the exception with us having 5 toes all in line and using our full feet to walk.
On PS1 they gave him 3 toes to reduce rendering. Spyro really was pushing the PS1 to the limit by making the worlds massive and on par with what the N64 was doing.
I personally love the original Spyro design. Nostalgic, edgy, and confident! This was another great video, once again, you nailed it! 🙌🏾🙏🏾

Even though I was never a Skylanders fan, I do really like the version of Spyro from the TV show, design-wise. I'd say it nearly ties with the Reignited Trilogy design, different though they may be from each other.
Now that you have done character desing video about insomiac's first big title, maybe ratchet and clank character desing someday?
Since Spyro came right after Crash's video, maybe he could do Jac and Daxter & Rachet and Clanck back-to-back.
Surprised that you forgot to mention that Spyro got thumbs in Skylanders and that got transferred to his Reignited design. This is a great video regardless though.

Insomniac said that one of the reasons that they Sold the licence to Spyro, was because he didn't have thumbs,
and then Toys For Bob give him thumbs in skylanders, so in Superchargers and CTR, he can race :D
Actually, it's the Skylanders Academy design that added thumbs. He didn't have any in the Skylanders games.

Spyro's 3D model and design from the Reignited Trilogy is the dream from my childhood +20 years ago.
I thought his Skylanders design was a joke at first and was pissed that was a actual design. Why make him ugly, good lord? I grew up to Spyro and he was such a big part of my childhood. Nothing against Skylanders as a game, its personally not for me but I'm loving his Reignited design.
And I understand that other people might like the other designs because they grew up to it so I don't mean any hate or anything. Everyone has their own opinions.
I know right? Reignited is fantastic IMO.
I liked his wings in Skylanders, but among other things, I wondered why his tail spike took up a third or even half of his tail’s total length.

@@cobiguy Well, the very first design in Skylanders in my opinion looked absolutely horrible. The second design was better but in the tv show I didn't care for his design but still better then the first. I'm just loving his reignited design and in my opinion thats his best design ever.

You ever thought about doing a similar video, but on multiple different platformer mascots and their designs? Characters like Hat Kid, Yooka and Rayman. Diving deeper into how an appealing mascot is created and why some succeeded and some failed.
I haven't, but I would LOVE to do some content on Hollow Knight down the line. That game has incredible designs.

I grew up with the Skylander series, so that design is my personal favourite. Heck, when I first saw his OG design, I thought the reverse of what the OG fans thought: his design was ugly. But overtime, I grew used to it and came to love all three versions. Skylanders will still be my favourite though because it was my entryway into the world of video games.

I found out about Spyro in a kinda weird way.
The first Spyro game that I played was actually one of those tiny game devices with one game on them, which only had beeping sound effects, and the background was a picture. There was a picture of Spyro breathing fire on a front thing that you opened up to get to the game. Spyro was in the middle, and was part of the background, shown from the top. You controlled a thing (I don’t know, what it was) and had to move around Spyro, blocking balls of fire coming from him to protect some building from being destroyed. I don’t know, why they made Spyro the bad guy, but oh well.
The second game with Spyro, that I played was Skylanders. My dad told me about the fact that there used to be games just about Spyro, and I got curious and found out more things about Spyro online.
It was really exciting for me, when the triology came out, but at first I didn’t have a chance to play it, because the console that we have, is an Xbox 360. I gotta get myself the PC version at some point. It wasn’t there, when I was the most hyped for the game.

I remember playing spyro (the demo) and spyro 3 waaay back! And now that it's on the switch and other consoles and pc is just amazing!

I was on the original team at Insomniac, and in fact pitched the idea that grew into the Spyro we all know and love.
One correction, on something that everyone always gets wrong, is that we never intended the character’s name to be “Pete”. We needed a working name and thought it a fun play on words to name our guy Pete, since the dragon in “Pete’s Dragon” is actually named Elliot. (although after two years he did in fact become ‘Pete’ in our minds and hearts)
One mistake I made while texturing Spyro, which haunts me to this day, but no one else seems to notice, is that I messed up the structure of Spyro’s wings in the first game. The ‘fingers” (boney struts) should all originate from the ‘wrist’ (main folding joint) in the wing, but I had them strung evenly along the length of the entire wing. This mistake shows up again and again in the cover art as well as a lot of other art done for the first game. I guess it’s a little thing, since no one has ever mentioned it, but it drives me NUTS.
I had to smile/cringe when you got to Skylanders. I used the same exact phrase when I first saw the ‘new’ Spyro… “Looks like they beat him with the ugly stick”. I would have been more upset, except Skylanders introduced Spyro to a whole new generation of players, as well as having all the fun merchandising; ie toys, lunchboxes, stuffed animals etc., that we never got with the original games. I don’t think we would have gotten the Reignited series, or a TV series, if it hadn’t been for Skylanders.
I have to agree with you that, as much as I love the orginal, the newest iteration is my favorite... with a couple exceptions. Primarily, they got the color WRONG. He’s fuchsia in the remastered games! It could be argued that that is just my opinion, but since I choose the color and painted the original textures, I’ll argue that my opinion carries a little more weight than most.
The other issue I have is, while the new look is very clean when it comes to the colors, I would like to have seen a little more variation between the yellows used in the chest, horns, crest, tail and wing struts. But that’s a pretty minor… compared to him almost being PINK in the game. The promo art is gorgeous and the right color!
It’s been fun, most of the time, to watch Spyro continue on through the years.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Spyro's back spines now being purple in the Reignited Trilogy, instead of the colour of his horns. That's a surprising sticking point for some people.

I think the Reignighted design is a compromise between the Hero's Tale and Dawn of the Dragon designs, done with the plasic artstyle of Skylanders or Enter the Dragonfly.

Ender 01o he was complaining about the scales on the first skylanders design but I actually like the scales the only part of the design I don’t like is the in game model. It probably looks bad because the game is so zoomed out and they had so many characters to model and he ended out not looking the best

@@ArtistMarkFlynn Can confirm, reignited is really good and I think they really nailed the design. However, I kinda wish they would fix 3 biggest problems with it (PC VERSION):
#1 animation timer & physics is tied to FPS. This kills mood most of the time when platforms do not move (some times at all) or Spyro slides to pit of doom above 120 FPS... only way to fix this is to set FPS limiter lower. Preferably to 60 if game breaking bug appears (actually this solves most problems in the game)
#2 Input lag (related to FPS). You would think high FPS means better response, but not in this game. (I find this funny because it is not detectable with keyboard. I play with game pad)...
#3 collision boxes... do I need to explain this?

Honestly, I would love if you do a new series besides this one. Don’t get me wrong, I love the design videos and sometimes reaction videos, but I think you can do something new too. I really like your content and want to see more, something that shows your personality and is unique. But anyways, thank you for making my afternoons a bit more fun ^^

The funny thing is, the design for a lot of the characters in Reignited, including Spyro himself, were made by a fellow fan of the franchise, Nicholas Kole. Despite my grudge with Skylanders, Toys for Bob really nailed it with Reignited.

I find this very ironic. Crash Bandicoot was a huge success in Japan, but the port of Spyro 1 was so terrible that he never got the same success there.
I love The Legend of Spyro series but out of all designs, I believe Spyro in The Eternal Night Cover is my favorite and for Dark Spyro, I believe him in his debut is perfect and scary as he is quiet and unresponsive, stares blank so he doesn't need to speak to be frightening and when he first transforms in that Beam staring with an aggressive and sadistic look, that's honestly dark and Skylanders Academy DS does not appear terrifying, his appearance and behavior is generic which nothing by him will top TEN DS's moment of turning Gaul into Stone before using Nether Fury, shattering his body until it crumbles into tiny fragments leaving nothing in its place.

Honestly, with both Skylanders and the Reignited Trilogy made by Toys for Bob, it makes me wonder if for by some miracle Skylanders does return or even gets a remastered/reimagined version of the original game or a reboot, it makes me wonder if they'll go with the Skylanders design of Spyro that they grew so accustomed to, or would they go in a route that they know the fans would enjoy more and use the Reignited Spyro design and character. Both are similar in some ways but are very different. Skylanders made Spyro seem more like a leader. Also, when I think about it, the original Skylanders game didn't really have much characterization for the various characters in gameplay. They were more like actual creatures where some had the privilege of speaking whereas many made sounds which may explain the more reptilian look. However, I think it began to shift when they wanted to give more characterization over time by giving them all voices to help them stand out and really stood out in Imaginators where he was a major NPC. So maybe we may be able to see Reignited Spyro in Skylanders or we may just go back to the Skylanders Spyro they had. Though, one thing I think would be cool is to see some of the other Spyro characters like Ripto, Hunter, Gnasty Gnork, Elora, and other characters across the franchise become Skylanders or even Villains in the series. Like Ripto could be a Magic character, Elora would be Life, and Bentley could Water, just to name a few examples.

I going to be honest, as much as I liked the Legend Of Spyro redesign (Dawn Of The Dragon) the Reignited Trilogy design is perfect. It brings nearly all the elements of each iteration of Spyro’s various designs over the years.

in order of preference for me:
Reignited (as you said, it's literally almost unarguable. he looks cute, cocky, confident, adn his animations of the model REALLY sell it)
Dawn of the Dragon (I REALLY like the more mature, older take on him. And he looks more like a strong, powerful dragon as opposed to kinda a cute little hatchling, which is a nice, different take on him)
Skylanders Academy (tbh, this one is mostly due to the animators of the show doing SUCH an amazing job with his expressions and movements that elevate the design to another level for me)
ANB/TEN (While I do love the classics, to me, the graphics REALLY hurt the designa lot more than they should)
Classic (still like the box art/drawing/renderings of him, but the in-game model is kinda...bleh)
Hero's Tale (I'm sorry but that in game model is horrid imo)

uh...huh? erm...okay so if what I think yu are TRYING to say is correct, these are my responses:
A) Dreamworks is not a show, it's a company that produces mostly movies. And on top of that, I never said Dreamworks was a bad studio or made any mention of them at all because htey have 0 to do with this. Dreamworks being good (or in this case, better) than the Skylanders show does not invalidate the amazingly done and difficult work that the animators for skylanders academy have done. And on top of THAT, Dreamworks and their movies (like one of my fav series ever, How To Train Your Dragon), have MUCH, MUCH bigger budgets due to being movies, so on TOP of that you need to judge the Skylanders series also on it being a netflix show, and likely not having an utterly mind-blowingly huge budget like a Dreamworks film would
B) MLP is done in Flash Animation and is a 2D animated show, and is a COMPLETELY different medium than 3D animation like Skylanders academy is. I love 2D AND 3D animation, though I must say that aside from the movie, and a few select finalies/opening episodes of Friendship is Magic, the animation is fairly basic on a grand scale, and not massively high energy. And I say this as a HUGE fan of the MLP show. seen every episode and love hte show, but its 'above and beyond' level of animation is few and far between. Again, likely due to budgeting.
TL;DR:
Just because one animation studio exists and has more budgeting, does not mean other studios and their animators are worth nothing. Their hard work deserves to be appreciated to. *mic drop*
@@0MidnighttheDragon0 Sorry, I did say topic more than just animated. If Dreamworks produced animated trilogy How to train your dragon movies, then why How to train your dragon TV series existed in TV stream like Netflix or everything else other brand TV streaming? I looked who's made TV series of "How to Train your Dragon" during in credits, there's no another animated studio would make "How to train your Dragon" TV series for influence Dreamworks, just Mir studio made show Voltron: The legendary defender.
I prefer the Skylanders design for Spyro because of how the wings look. On both classic and LoS Spyro, the ribs of the wings match colorwise to the wing membranes, making it look like the wings were grafted onto Spyro due to a surgery. Comparing that design choice to the Skylanders iteration of the character, the ribs of Spyro's wings match with the color of his main body, being purple. I may not be a Spyro player but I too am into the Reignited Trilogy version because of the fact that Spyro has upgraded himself to amazement.
I have a soft spot for Skylander’s Spyro simply from nostalgia. However, I will have to admit it is pretty... unique. The reignited trilogy design is definitely my favorite bc it takes the best of many different designs and puts them all together in a beautiful character that captures his cockiness and young youthfulness perfectly.

Honorable mention to CTR Nitro Fueled Spyro who’s basically Reignited Spyro with smaller pupils and no irises. It’s not much but it’s a bit different.

You should do some of the other Crash and Spyro characters sometimes. Coco, Cortex, Gnasty, Hunter, Ripto, N Gin, Sheila, etc...they’ve all had some interesting changes.

My favorite is a bit of a tie between Rignited and Dawn of Dragon. One is cute and one is cool and I can't really decide. Of course the Reignited has the advantage of newer hardware so is better animated but I grew up with the DoD design and it still looks cool while still having an element of cute to it.
One thing I do appreciate about DoD's world is that every single dragon is a quadroped and I wish they had stuck with that in the remakes. It just feels more natural and also being a quadroped really makes Spyro stand out. It's a big reason why I want him in Smash Bros as he is one of the few iconic game characters that has a fully non-anthro design. The only other one I can think of off the top of my head is Amaterasu from Okami.

Gotta love the reignighted trilogy design, it's just so perfect recapturing the classic while adding some modern look to it.
I was going to put my vote to Dawn of the Dragon, because that design was praised for trying to fit a dark epic theme with fans who grew up along with the purple boy.
The legend series is what got me to be introduced to Spyro. I started in a weird order, DOTD, New Beginning, then Eternal Night.
I first saw spyro when my cousin played Hero's tail. I liked the design but never really loved the character at the time.
Skylanders pretty much had a downgrade for the design since I for one hate it, but started to grow on me as the franchise remodel him over the course of games (skylanders) as well as the show.
If I didn't mention the other half of games, either I wasn't able to experience it because I was barely born at the time, and or I just had no appeal for it (the classics I do wish I had played, but I guess reignited will pass that touch for me)

i like the DS version of spyro :\ it was the only spyro game i owned and got to play for myself. I played the one that was on the gamecube but i didnt own one so i grew attached to the DS game

But may I make a suggestion on taking a look at the Shantae franchise? They change their art style pretty much every game so I think it would be interesting to hear your opinion on her design and varying art styles
You know, I'd actually be down for a return to the Legend Of Spyro series if they used the art style of the GBA games.............and if they rewrote the story a little bit and didn't have him age all of a sudden. So basically, a reboot.
They could keep this series as a spinoff, kind of like the Paper Mario series.
Edit: OH! Here's an idea: Maybe they could make this new Legend Of Spyro a 2D platformer with hand drawn animations! You know, like Shantae: Half Genie Hero and Monster Boy.

When I was little I heard of the spyro series and I heard of skylanders and I knew that in skylanders there was purple dragon called spyro and it really confused me why there was two purple dragons called spyro

Yeah I think the reignited one is best as well, although certain animations and some of the added details and reworks stretch things a bit too much for my preferences. I miss some of the old color palettes and feel like the lighting kinda misses the brighter vibes in certain areas to be specific.
I'd take the old Hunter model over the new one any day. If the eyes of a lot of the side character's were closer to the style of Spyro's it'd be pretty much fixed.
Skylanders Spyro looks like someone tried mixing him and DoomGuy's pixelated face together.
