    So far as Barrett Jackman is concerned: It's easy to forget that it was a different NHL back then. Certain types of players were valued over others which would not have been as useful in our NHL. It's for reasons like this that players such as Brooks Orpik (heavy hitting, not high scoring) were first round draft picks. Shut down defensemen in these days weren't just useful players but were neseccary to the game that was played pre-lockout. Yes, Zetterburg and Nash are overall better players, but people had a good reason for considering Jackman a good rookie. That said, BEST rookie can for sure be argued, but it doesn't seem to me unreasonably out of the realm out possibilities that he was selected.

    What I love about Cheechoo's random win is that, unlike the others, his win wasn't a judgment call. It was just raw numbers - for some unknown random reason, he just had more goals.
    Calder Trophy is littered with anomalies but that's not that surprising: who you are today is not who you will develop into.

    Steve Mason had a solid start to his next season pairing after winning the Calder with Mattheau Garon and had the Jackets positioned well. Until the Veteran's day game when he gave up 3 goals in the first. Hitchcock decided to make an example of it and put him back in where he would give up a total of 9 goals to the Red Wings at home. After that game, they fell flat the rest of the season and dropped from contention to lottery team. Mason never seemed fully comfortable in goal after that game and although he had some bounceback with Philly, never had the same stats.

      @joer8854 4 года назад +1

      By the numbers, it looks like a confidence problem. He was damn good from 2012-2016 and had a damn good rookie season. That's why coaches and GM's always talk about how they don't want players to lose their swagger. A goalie who can brush off goals like nothing is better than a guy who's a brick wall but confidence made of glass. The wrong puck or two and it all comes crashing down.

    • @randalsavage790
      @randalsavage790 4 года назад

      The injury bug got the better of Steve Mason. He had a terrible groin injury dating back to his junior career after being traded from the London Knights to the Kitchener Rangers. It seemed he never was able to fully recover fron that injury as it reared it's ugly head from time to time since he turbed pro. Add a terrible groin injury along with a fragile back and left knee and it's the kiss of doom for any pro let alone a goalie.

      The Problem is what's your Definition of a Rookie: Most of the Europeans who come to the NHL played in a Men's League before, so Pettersson shouldn't have won, Matthews shouldn't have won because he played in Switzerland, Malkin shouldn't have won, Ovi shouldn't have won

    The only reason Theodore won the Hart trophy over a clear winner in Jarome Iginla is because one of the voters decided to leave Iginla completely off their ballot. It was done with intent, either so Theodore would win, or that Jarome would lose. That voter was from Quebec. Derive what motivations you will.

    I'm fine with Théodore winning the Vézina in 2002, but the Hart trophy should definitely have gone to Iginla... He was a monster that season. Iginla is arguably one of the most underrated players of all time anyway.

  • @tmacsmash
    @tmacsmash 4 года назад

    Jackman's rookie year was weaker than it looks in retrospect. Zetterberg only scored 22 goals, and 22 assists. Not shabby, but not eye popping. Nash had worse stats. Jackman meanwhile played on the top pairing most of the year and over 20 minutes a game. He had a great plus minus of plus 23 all things considered. Jackman was asked to do more, and delivered. If Zetterberg put up more points he would have easily won. Those stats won't win the Calder most years, which is why he didn't that year despite a significantly better career.
