Has your team made a trade that aged horribly?!

    • @flashy999
      @flashy999 4 года назад +9

Noah Hanafin and Elias lindholm for Dougie Hamilton. I understand the dougie is a solid top 4 scoring defenseman, but Noah hanafin is supposed to be a top 2 two way d man, along with a great 2nd line playmaker?! It’s worked out in a way... but being a franchise mode player in nhl 20, it hurts to see your team lose two prospects. Edit:

@Ye Ye not just that, how did Bolts just choke with only ONE player injured (Hedman) like just cuz he was the true Hart Trophy winner it doesn't mean the offense/defense must dry up as a DIRECT result! Every all star was invisible, and the team only showed up for the first period of GM1
As for the jets they were the most frustrating team of the year IMO, casually coughing up 1-2 goal leads every other game, letting teams score late in the game, having the most losses when leading after TWO periods...their woes were felt most vs MIN and STL; vs STL, GM5, they were up 2-0, hayes blew a big opportunity to score (puck was going in, but he reached up and accidentally on purpose pulled it *backwards*)
Calgary died after GM1, and allowed 50+ shots against the next 4 games vs the Avs
Babcock had a cock in his Bab in GM7 vs Boston
Last but not least, we saw some of the most inconsistent hockey of this century! Had Western teams juuust played a _tad_ bit better, the Blues wouldn't have made the playoffs. Only 3 teams had 100 points. THREE. Calgary (107), San Jose (101), and Nashville (100).
Nobody (teams not players) was playing like they should've. Montreal gave off Michel "We're one goal ahead so let's just play defense because we don't need to go and score again because the game's already in our pockets" Therrien vibes with how they thought being up 2-1 in the first 10mins of the game meant they didn't have to play anymore because they (quote unquote) "won". It's things like these that made me tune out to the NBA playoffs for the first time.

Bishop trade is a dud for sure. But we had Anderson and Lehner at the time too and had to make a decision. Conacher was lighting it up that year (granted he was playing with St.Louis).

Those first couple years he couldn't get on the Ice for Nashville. He looked like a Bust until he broke out randomly. In all honesty, his Stats are very similar to Erat's with the exception of this past year. A few more goals than Erat, and few less assists.

Oh and regarding Karlsson...I feel that there has been some inury issues that haven't really been brought to light. And not to mention some major injuries from years gone by that will probably take a toll on his body as goes deeper into his 30's. Hopefully this extended time off has given time to whatever needed to heal. Think Teemu Selane...his career seemed close to being over, but the lockout gave him the time he needed to recoup, and he was lights out from then on.

I recently found your channel and have been loving the content. I'm a Ducks fan and a trade that aged horribly for us was Kyle Palmieri to New Jersey for a 2015 second and 2016 third round pick. Palmieri is a 25+ goal scorer per season at a cap hit of 4.65 million a year. Meanwhile Anaheim's offense has suffered mightily. The one deal that aged well for the Ducks and didn't have to wait too long was in the 2011 draft. Anaheim traded the #22 overall pick to Toronto for picks #30 and #39. Toronto picked Tyler Biggs at #22 and Anaheim acquired Rickard Rakell at #30 and John Gibson at #39.

    March 13th, 1996
Toronto Aquires: D.J Smith, Mathieu Schneider and an Aging Wendel Clark
    for
New York Islanders: Sean Haggerty, Darby Henrickson, Kenny Johnsson and a 1st round Pick
Initially this trade looked fairly good. Clark, while not as effective as his first stint with the Maple Leafs, was still and effective player. Mathieu Schneider was seen as a good to great defenceman and DJ Smith (Ottawa's Current Head Coach) was a pretty good prospect. Meanwhile Darby Henrickson and Sean Haggerty ended up playing less than half a season combined for the Islanders, and Kenny Johnsson was a solid/dependable top 4 d-man. Seems pretty decent at first, almost even, maybe even a little tilted towards the Maple Leafs.
With the 1st round pick, the New York Islanders choose future Hall of Fame Goaltender Roberto Luongo, and Mathieu Schneider is a bust in Toronto, Wendel Clark is often injured and the Leafs miss the playoffs in '97 and '98 despite having one of the highest payrolls in hockey.
This however lead to one of the most lopsided trades in Islanders history because on
    June 24th, 2000
New York Islanders Aquires: Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha
    for
Florida Panthers Aquire: Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen
That was bad at the time and worse now... off Milbury

You forget the Leafs were in the middle of two playoff runs that brought them to the Semis. Luongo never would of made it in a market like Toronto anyways. Trading Rask for Raycroft however is one they probably want back.

The thing people kinda forget (and rightfully so) is that, minus a terrible call and complete collapse by the Knights, the Sharks were a first round exit team in 2019. They really weren't a team "2 wins away from the Finals." Or even 3 wins, if you want to discount that handpass goal. Yes the Sharks were opportunistic in that Knights game, but honestly, that was 20% a bad call, 70% the Knights forgetting how to hockey, and 10% the Sharks being a good team. The Sharks collapse this season never shocked me...they were a first round exit team disguised as one 2 wins away from the Finals.

Not only did the Sharks overpay for Karlsson in salary and assets to get him, Karlsson just hasn't been as good as he was before that 2017 ECF run on the Sens. His ankle surgery has hindered him greatly and, sadly, without his world class speed Karlsson isn't Karlsson. A lot of his playmaking depended on his agility and acceleration, to get deep into the zone and then absolutely fly back up the ice into his d zone to defend. He just doesn't have that anymore. Josh Norris became a point per game rookie in the AHL this year and won rookie of the year. Chris Tierney is alright, DeMelo was great for us. Plus the 3rd overall. All icing on the cake.

The Sharks definitely have more issues than just Karlsson, but he's a very easy scapegoat given the size of his contract.
There were a lot of underperforming players this year, and I would argue Jones and Vlasic are both on much worse contracts - you could even argue Burns at $8mil a year until the age of 40(!) is the worst on the Sharks given his seeming regression this year

    • @TheHuggybear516

Wild fan here. The Burns trade aged terribly, the Hanzal and Ryan White deadline deal aged terribly, and although the Vegas expansion trade of Tuch and Haula hasn’t aged that horribly yet, Tuch would be a great player on the Wild this season, as they literally only have 2 right shot forwards. On the bright side, the Fiala-Granlund trade looks like a big win for the Wild

I’ll admit I’m not in love with the price my Sharks paid for EK65 ($9.5/8yrs would’ve been better), but at this point I feel he’s catching a bad rap for misguided reasons.
    1. He’s never not generated less than 0.7ppg (normally he’s in the 0.9+ppg range, which is insane for a defenseman).
    2. The Sharks lost an entire 2nd line this year, which hamstrung our scoring up front.
    3. Our 1A goalie was the most overworked goalie in the entire NHL, and that fatigue finally caught up to him after four years of 60+ reg season games and deep playoff runs.
    4. Our former coach failed to revise the play strategy for the new team, so nobody had much guidance.
    5. A disjointed locker room vibe left everyone sour until they pulled it together halfway through the season.
    6. Loss of old leadership, beginning of new leadership, and...
    7. INJURIES!!!!
I know it’s easy to put all this on the EK65 trade, but if we didn’t sign him we’d have lost picks, prospects, and whatnot for nothing. I also get that it’s frustrating we don’t have our own pick (only because it’s 3rd overall this year), but I think we’re forgetting a few important things: a) there’s no way we could’ve known things would go this south this year (in fact, I think all the GMs were under the impression the cap would go up a lot last year), and b) we acquired another 2020 1st round pick which happens to be in the range that we normally pick every year with our own, exceptions being 2007 and 2015 (y’know, the only years where we’ve missed the playoffs during two decades!).
tl;dr... the Sharks will be ok!

I’ve been saying the same thing all season. While the Karlsson trade may seem like a blunder, there were many other factors that led to the sharks poor season. I have full confidence that Doug Wilson can figure out a way to bolster this roster and the team will turn it around next season.

Welcome to bring a Sens fan during the 2017-2018 season. No one could had predicted the fall from grace they had after the Duchene trade. We got that key center who can just dominate with Mark Stone, Mike Hoffman and to put less pressure on Karlsson having to make all those insane plays he made. That and Turris has not been the same since joining Nashville and Duchene turned out to be a massive upgrade for us. And that pick we gave up we thought would be a mid-rounder at best.
      However,
      1) Our Coach at the time Guy Boucher did not adapt to people figuring us out.
      2) That we'd suffer some serious injuries that season.
      3) that it turns out Hoffman's fiancee is a massive (insert your flavor text).
      4) That there'd be such bad blood in the locker room between Karlsson and Hoffman. Which just ruined the team chemistry and they just looked like they gave up halfway through the season.
      5) That the wheels finally came off Anderson's game.
      6) Melnyk...
It was an unpredictable collapse and all Sens fans were mortified to give Colorado a 4th Overall pick in 2019. But, it turns out cleaning the locker room of that bad karma had been good for the Sens. We have a strong leadership core of Tkachuk, Chabot and Duclair. And our prospects have not been this good since the mid-90s between Batherson, Brainstorm, Norris and add either Byfield or Stutzle we'll be in great shape and contending again in no time.
We want to see King Karl do well and Sens fans will be cheering for the Sharks to turn it around next year. But, we know it will sting you guys if we do transition to Contender status due to the trade. Sometimes it just happens.

As an AVS fan, 1. I love Joonis Donskoi. He’s a beast. 2. I think the biggest issue with Karlsson isn’t necessarily what he brings to the table, because he really is a super star. It’s what the sharks lost due to his price tag. Donskoi and Pavelski hurt.

the problem is vlassic burns and karlsson are all 30+ now and on the books for 27m for the next 5 years 11.5m for karlsson 8m for burns, and 7 mill for vlassic, then you are paying jones about 6m for pretty much fringe starter results this year for 5 more years 33m in those 4 players, not to mention burns seems like he is starting to show some regression, and karlsson was never the same player after the 2017 playoff run when he played on his gimped feet, he already had some pivot troubles from the cooke incident... i think the sharks have about 9? million to work with, but the window is closing, they need to trade burns very soon or he will turn into a seabrook contract

RE: Hamilton trade. I do agree that Senyshyn wasn’t a good pick for the Bruins, but the two second picks they received in the Hamilton trade weren’t exactly busts.
#45 Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson showed that he is a solid Bottom 6 two way player at the NHL level. He moved to the United States from Sweden at 17. After 6 years playing stateside, he wanted to play closer to his family for the 2019-20 season. He fully intendeds to play for the Bruins organization and I expect to see him in camp next season.
#52 Jeremy Lauzon has earned himself a Top 6 D job in Boston over the last few months. He’s not a big point D-Man, but he’s a solid defensemen who has a great hockey iq. He’s also not afraid to stick up for his teammates and is signed through 2021-22.

    • @RobTalksHockey
      @RobTalksHockey  4 года назад

Rob Talks Hockey Well, the situation the Bruins were put in at that time, was that Brian Burke and Calgary were going to offer sheet Hamilton.
The Bruins had offered him the almost the exact same contract he ended up getting in Calgary, but he rejected the offer. At the time they really didn’t cap room to match an offer sheet for over $6 million, nor did they want to keep Hamilton there if he didn’t want to play for the organization. They already had Chara, Krug, Seidenberg, Mcquaid, K. Miller, Morrow and C. Miller at D. Plus they were all signed through that next year. So instead of taking the compensation from the offer sheet(a 1st, 2nd & 3rd round pick), they traded him for the 1st and two 2nd’s. So it netted them a 2nd instead of 3rd with the offer sheet, and you get assets for a player that didn’t want to play for your organization.

@@BruTangClanHockeyCards yeah but the problems with getting a first and two seconds, you need to draft something good. I get it they were in an impossible situation with the cap and Hamilton contracts but at least make it count with those drafts picks. I am from the future. It turned out, playing with Eichel was awful, as he was an egotistical and arrogant player that was toxic in the dressing room... and once he left, Skinner's numbers went back to normal, scoring over 30 goals in the 2021-22 season. In fact, Skinner would go on to play with Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch to form an incredibly productive line with 4.06 goals per 60 minutes of ice time, making him a part of the 11th best line in the entire NHL

One thing that has to be appreciated when commenting on trades in today's NHL is the Salary Cap. Also the "No Trade" that most elite players have. Makes trading guys a lot more challenging, like Buffalo experienced in trading Hall to Boston. They had their hands tied so really to get anything may have been a win in their case?

Well, in the cap era there are more to trades than just evaluating skill - not only that but trades are way more complicated than most fans think, also it's pretty easy to judge a trade in hindsight..... I mean I'm 40-years-old and have been a hockey fan - especially a Hawks fan for 35-years so I have seem my fair share of trades that on face value were horrible at the time but aged profoundly well and I have seen my fair shaRe of trades that were just terrible when they were made and I have seen my fair share of trades where a team hands down won the trade in the short-run but lost the trade in the long-run.
To be honest, I really don't think a trade involving high picks (first or second round picks) is that bad if a team is trading away, say a top 6 forward in his late 20's for say a 1st & 3rd round picks + a role player or prospect as an example.... And look, it's not always true that the team that gets the best player wins the trade, especially when picks are involved because you don't know how those picks are going to turn out.... I mean right now there are dozens of players that were drafted in later rounds whom you would NEVER trade for players that were drafted in higher rounds from the same draft class.... I mean if I have a confident and competent scouting staff I would have no issue trading a non-core albatross player for picks and prospects, because odds are you will get a player just as good if not better depending on your scouting staff....
I suppose my point is it's really difficult to blame a GM or a team for trading a top 6 or top 4 pairing d-man for a few picks - besides fans really don't know the circumstances behind the trade the demand for said player - especially when it comes to the salary cap... I mean you could have a team that wants a player but would have to send salary back to acquire that player but the team trading the player is trading him to shed cap despite the the fact that the interested team was the one that made the best offer.....

In 2005 the Sharks traded for a player named Joe Thornton. What a huge trade! Scoring titles! Division Titles! President's Trophy! Now 15 years later the guy just won't retire. You're a fucking dinosaur Joe, please fucking retire.
REMEMBER when the Sharks traded for Teemu Selanne? Unremarkable in San Jose. Needed a knee surgery. I don't think he ever wanted to be on the Sharks to begin with. Oh and HE MISSED A FUCKING SLAM DUNK WRAPAROUND IN GAME 7 AGAINST THE AVALANCHE. THEN he decides, you know what, I'm gonna take a pay cut and go join my buddy Paul Kariya in Colorado where he LOST TO THE SHARKS in 2003! HAHAHAHAHAHA
Also the Sharks traded for perhaps the most overrated defenseman of all time: Erik Karlsson. What's so great about this guy again? What, cause he can score goals? That's great but he's garbage at defense. Just watch the Blues series in the 2019 playoffs.
Then there was the whole Ed Belfour fiasco where he referred to his fellow Shark teammates as "losers" to the media.
And there's more bad trades for the Sharks, but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

He was an albatross waiting to happen. But Boston did have some shitty picks for him. I mean they might pan out you don't know yet. Boston could be sitting on a gold mine. As a Preds fan, trading Weber for Subban has aged horribly.

Islanders trading Zdeno Chara... I cried.

It's not really fair to have Skinner in this. The trade itself was a steal, acquiring a 40 goal scorer for peanuts. The contract is the only issue, and that's completely separate from the initial trade.

That is true. But Skinner being the main asset in the trade. Has aged very poorly from an asset management pov

Mad Mike (Milbury) of the Islanders traded the 2nd overall pick in 2001 draft (Jason Spezza) and Zdeno Chara to Ottawa for Alexei Yashin. Chara and Spezza became stars. Yashin only scored 30 goals once for the Isles and was eventually bought out.

Avalanche draft Cale Makar, get Sam Gerard, & more for Matt Duchene. Sakic is becoming as good of a general manager as he was a professional NHL player!

Considering the Barzal pick originally belonged to the Pens, who shipped it to Edmonton for vanishing act-mode Perron...
