    Getting rid of Duchene and Johansen was more about changing the culture than it was about embracing a rebuild. And I don’t think any of the signings will really block any of the young players who impressed last year. You can’t waste Saros, Josi, and Forsberg’s prime years by fully tanking

    All the Sens losses have replaced what the players they lost did and should do more a C is a pretty harsh grade considering they got better I would've given them a C before the Tarasenko signing

    • @tifpo33
      @tifpo33 Год назад +2

  • @DizzyDez613
    @DizzyDez613 Год назад +8

    I think there’s two different ways to analyze a team’s off-season when giving a grade. Option 1: Are they better? This is a yes or no question. How much better they got will dictate how high their mark is. This is the easiest way to judge a team’s off-season. However there is another perspective to consider. Option 2: Did they tick all the boxes on their to-do list?
    The objective of every team in the summer isn’t necessarily to get “better” on paper. Obviously you always want to improve your team. But for GMs that are playing the long game, sometimes your Summer is simply about cleaning house to set up future off-seasons. Look at Nashville for example. Unloading the massive contracts of Duchene and Johansen is a huge relief for future moves, but it doesn’t make your team “better” on paper.
    Let’s look at the to-do list of a team like Ottawa:
    - Trade DeBrincat (you were never gonna “win” this trade) ✅
    - Replace DeBrincat’s goals - signed Tarasenko ✅
    - Improve third line - acquired Kubalik in the Cat trade ✅
    - Improve goaltending ✅
    - Add some bottom line grit - signed MacEwen and Imama ✅
    I think there’s very little that Ottawa NEEDED to do that they haven’t accomplished. Just need to work the money to extend Pinto. So looking at it that way, you could argue their grade could be a A. But when considering if they got “better” or not, they’re probably about the same, maybe slightly better if Korpisalo works out. So maybe C+ or B-

    • @OttawaRocks
      @OttawaRocks Год назад +1

      Great comment. Two questions pop out: (a) what is he grading exactly? and (b) how is he giving out letter grades? If he began defining his starting point (i.e, provideid more context and/or definitions) then there would be less banter regarding the grades he gave out.
      Also, agree with how you graded the Sens based on your 2 definitions.

    Ottawa getting a C is way too low. They needed goaltending - addressed it. They replaced Cat's 27 goals with two players who combined for 38 last year and are in "prove it" years, they acquired a second 1st round pick which they can dangle at the deadline, they added grit, and they retained defensive depth (as Hamonic will now play on 3rd pairing, where he belongs).

    I think overall you're making the same mistake almost everyone does putting WAY too much of an emphasis on points production/offense vs Defense. Your grading for the Devils for instance is veering on apalling, they lost a most useful defender in Graves, a decent developping puck mover/offensive D in Boqvist and a Top Pair do it all D guy almost anywhere in Severson only to replace them with absolutely no freaking one.
    But yeah, they got Toffoli... much improvement, much wow much impressed...
    ANd the rest oh boy... Nosek was pretty much last in the picking order in Boston and poor old Tierney love the guy but he was almost as useless with the CH as he was with the Panthers... How can they be any improvements over Tatar, Wood and Sharangovich ?!!?
    Ok, they have one of the most, if not the most impressive young core in the league along with the sabres & the CBJ (and soon the CH) and keeping or extending those guys was more important than anything else. But overall their off season is a C- at the very best.
    I could have also quoted the Canes there. A strong defense is more important than flashy offense all day, and the Canes right now have the D crew to take over the world, losing Ghost to have him replaced with Orlov, Caleb Jones and DeAngelo ? FFS are they preparing for war or sth ?! They also added Bunting which is a MASSIVE move over Stastny, Puljuharvi or Stepan, all with pretty poor numbers last year. So even though they're still maybe missing a star forward, i'd say they're still more of an A than a B.

    Montreal has been having a pretty good time, Caufield takes a team friendly deal, they get a bunch of capital and actually gain cap in the Karlsson and Petry trades. But most importantly THEY GOT NEW MEDICAL STAFF. In terms of players in and players out I agree they didn’t make themselves a competitive team, but as I keep saying, Hughes is accumulating small win after small win and it is adding up.

  • @benoitrobitaille5235
    @benoitrobitaille5235 Год назад +1

    I find interesting that every year the recent cup winners gets trashed in the free agency/off season, their objectives is to keep their core together and try to compensate for losses in depth due to the cup tax, the goal being to remain competitive. If the core is intact and didn’t lose much, its excellent.
    At the same time, teams that have plenty of cap space and round picks because they are bottom feeders gets automatically high scores because they aren’t as bad as last year on paper, because they overpaid for free agents, signed lots of 3rd liners or got rookies in well before they should.
    If we are to evaluate teams by their direction, when a team is at the top, we need to recognize that its nearly impossible to get better, stagnation is awesome and being slightly worse is only natural.

    You should swap Dallas' 'B' with Colorado's 'C'. Duchene is toxic for any locker room, and Colorado has a history of adding players that no one expects to be that good, and then they somehow are great for the Avs. And no team that acquires Justin Holl should get anything above a 'C+'. I am also iffy on the Dubois trade for L.A.

    Debrincat scored 27 goals last season. Easily replaceable. Ottawa had a better off season than you're claiming.

    Ottawa a C? I think there at least a B imo, they addressed there goaltending and improved there offence a lot including multiple Greta bottom 6 players along with the star talent of Tarasenko and a great top 6 guy who will be playing 3rd line in Kubalik.

    Are you kidding about the Ottawa Senators, " C" Ottawa Senators added more scoring threat plus more grit to the lineup, not forget about goalie addition, which they were going to address more than once and they finally did it, that's " A+" caliber, you are way off

    As a Sabres fan I agree with the C+. We really didn’t do a lot we are just banking on our younger guys taking another massive step this year. Hopefully we can finally have another competitive year all the way down to the final week. Was an amazing feeling not fighting for a lottery pick but ending only 2 points out of a playoff spot.

    I do think the lightning got worse , but I like some of the moves they made to fill out the bottom six. I really feel like their 4th line is gonna have wayyy more speed now and similar level of grit. not sold with johansson as backup , hoping we see Alnefelt in a few games this year.

    Sadly, the Wild have no cap space to make any high end moves. I really hope you're wrong and we don't make the playoffs, only to lose in the first round yet again and get a crap draft pick. I'm a diehard fan, but it sure is frustrating being average for so long. Either suck, or don't.

    The Canucks, A+, but only related to every other off-season they have ever had, not related to whatever other teams have done.
