Luongo was a sieve in the playoffs. He was ONLY above average in regular season which is quite useless hence why luongo lost the role in 2011 to Schneider and was traded off. I think be knew it too, hence the early retirement compared to real hall of fame cup winning tenders like Brodeur. I was a big lu fan as a young goaltender growing up. But facts are facts. He couldn't handle playoff extra effort and pressure.

Teams buy out the contracts in a settlement... So they don't make as much as you think... Also now they aren't allowed to make as long term contracts like back in the day which shields teams from having to pay players well after their playing days are over... I wasn't against teams issuing long term contracts the length of Roman Dynasties but i think teams shouldn't get a cap hit from it... But like i said now that i think the limit is 6 years, this isn't an issue anymore, anyways...

I wouldn’t say DiPietro was disappointing or didn’t live up to his drafting, he never really got the chance and was just always suffering from unfortunate injuries that ruined his career but the contract was stupid 15 years is mind blowing

  • @Bravelittletoaster1914

No - Zetterberg has NOT been raking in over 6 mil for not playing. That's only his cap hit because back when he signed it, you could still add extra years at the tail end with minimal salary. The cap hit would be the average of the years combined.
Zetts last year in the league he made 7 mill. The 3 following years he would make 3.3 mil, 1 mil and 1 mil.
So yeah, I'm sure his back was a lot harder to play through when he was only making 3 mil and 1 mil after having made 7 the year before that. If he was making 7 mil each year still... he'd probably still be playing.
Hossa did the same thing when his "skin condition" magically became too difficult to play with.

cody hodgson. a perfect example of how some players get paid for their perceived potential, rather than their accomplishments. typically high draft picks get this treatment.

I remember him coming to Nucks camp after crazy good preformance at world juniors and the anticipation of good things to come.
False rumors, a misdiagnosed back injury, and a shocking trade later, it was years before his actual condition was revealed.
He had a heart arrhythmia, and suffered blackouts from malignant hyperthermia, the genetic disorder that ultimately caused him to retire far too early.
Sad finish to a promising pro career.

Zetterberg and Datsyuk both having some injury problems that caused them to retire early hurt the Wings badly. That's why we became the worst team in the league after 25 years of playoff hockey. Also, the 2 swedes, Alfredsson for Ottawa, Lidstrom for Detroit, had their teams set up for the playoffs for YEARS... but after they were each gone it was just a matter of time until the wheels fell off. I think only now people are appreciating how great those guys were, and how great the duo of Henrik and Pavel were.
