Rick Dipietro gets paid until the 2028-29 season = insane contract and the guy have not played professional hockey since 2013-2014 season...
and in NHL since 2012. Wow, a total of 15 years with-out having to do anything (2014-2029) and got paid and still gettong paid!!!!!
Chris Pronger and Ilya Bryzgalov are close 2nd and 3rd.

Nice video. Reminds me of Bobby Bonilla from MLB who got bought out in 2000 and will be paid $1.2 mil/year until 2035!
One note, players on LTIR still count against the salary cap. If the team is at the cap max when the player gets moved to LTIR they are allowed to exceed the cap limit, but they don’t get to just remove the players cap hit from their cap calculation. If the team isn’t at the max they get no relief.

It's so odd seeing guys drafted after Patrice Bergeron whose careers ended years ago while Bergeron is still anchoring Boston's best line. Then again, Bergeron is a whole different animal whom I think anyone would love to be on their team even now in the twilight of his career.

If I recall, in the NHL, a buyout is half off the remaining contract amount owed payable over double the number of remaining years left when the player was bought out.

Buyouts don’t mean you pay the full salary, I believe it is 2/3 of the remaining salary for players over 25 or 27 (I can’t remember which) and 1/3 for players under 25 or 27. In both cases it’s paid over twice the normal amount though, you are right about that.

Isles have 2 of the worst buyouts in history. There’s Yashin who was payed 2.2 mil a year for 8 years (2007-2015) after the buyout and never played in the nhl again. Even though his last season in the league posted 50 points in 58 games. There’s the infamous dipi contract still going strong with 6 years remaining, even though we are approaching the 10th year anniversary of the buyout. Only other buyout as bad as these 2 would be the lacavalier buyout

    Thanks for mentioning Abdelkader.
what a terrible contract that was..
    Thanks Ken Holland.. 🖕
    Abdelkader
held back Z, and Datsyuk for at least 2 years when he was on that line. 🤦‍♂️
Similar to how I feel currently,
about signing a marginal 3rd line center like Andrew Copp for at least 4 more seasons with the Wings. 🤷‍♂️
And.. Yandle’s “Ironman” being beaten by a guy like Phil Kessel is absolutely hilarious.. 😂

when a player signs a contract, they are guaranteed all money involved in said contract.

    • @jonmendelson1104
      @jonmendelson1104 Год назад +4

It depends on how the player retires. If the player is injured in a way that they'll never be able to play again, it's often better for the team to keep the player on the roster on "long term injured reserve" than to have the salary cap penalty for the player officially retiring. Aside from that, as VGCeilingFan mentioned when a player signs a contract they're guaranteed the money from the contract with the exception of if the contract is bought out. If their contract is bought out they get 2/3 of the remaining non-bonus amount of their contract paid out over twice the remaining time on their contract (or 1/3 if they're under 26, but those don't happen often).
For instance, the last example in the video Girardi had a contract going from the 2014-15 season until 2019-20, but it was bought out before the 2017-18 season. He had 3 seasons remaining on his contract and was due a base salary of $10M of $3M total remaining due. He got the signing bonuses in full and then had 2/3 of the $10M split evenly over the next 6 years (twice the 3 years remaining on the contract).
