Before Gretzky was traded to LA - he was traded to Detroit -for Yzerman and cash - it was all set to go - but Walter Gretzky at the last minute said - Detroit already had Gordie Howe you will never be greater than him - lets go to LA instead - that is how that went down - that has been told by Wayne himself .
Gretzky's dad was the one who talked him out of Detroit, and pick LA to forge his own legacy. Also, Adam Oates was the key piece heading back to Edmonton, not Yzerman.
