Yeah, plus he played the entire second half of his first season in Montreal WITH A BROKEN WRIST THAT NEEDED SURGERY. Like, nobody was expecting that to play out how it did, and when the chips were down, Monty put his team above his individual health, reputation, and stats. Could you IMAGINE how embarrassingly that could have gone without him??? There were simply no goalies to be had at that point in time unless you were shelling out top-tier $$$$ (which the Habs were not doing lol). Poor guy couldn't even get a night off; it felt like every time they'd try and give Primeau the start, he would let in 3-4 goals and get pulled less than halfway through the game! Then a guy like Keumper with a FAR better track record is in good. I have no problem with Keumper being in good, its just you cant put those guys over him ...
Watching Gibson all season he at least needs to be in the Good tier. He had 3-4 50plus save games last season and faced an insane workload. The fact he kept his numbers where they were I think is incredible playing behind the worst defense in the league.
Yeah, Gibson got done dirty by the Ducks. We haven't had any sense of a quality defense in forever and I know how bad it will hurt motivation when you know that no matter how good you are.... your team is just not going to win
Bob has been so underrated with Florida. Yeah his first season was underwhelming but last year he was above average in save % and GSAA, the year before 39-7-3 record with a .913%, then his huge run last postseason. The panthers defensive core and overall team defense/pk has been below average every year (even during presidents trophy season). I don’t understand how a rookie skinner, georgiev who’s only been a starter 1 season, and vanecek who has under a .850% in the playoffs the last 3 seasons can be above bob. People only compare bob to his contract and look down on him when he has been sneakily really solid
He’s not underrated, the playoff run saved his career. He’s been extremely underwhelming and the contract does not make it look any better for him. He’s still a pretty good goaltender, but he was expected to be much better.
Devils fan here, I would put Vanecek in Good, not Great, his play is very similar to Tristan Jarry. Would not be surprised if Shmid ended up starting quite a few games this season, either.
Well....here's the deal. Vitek had a career season yet still stunk in the playoffs as per his usual. Personally, I believe he was massively overplayed down the stretch due to the unavailability of Blackwood & was just cooked. Now take in consideration at NJ will have two 19 year old rookies on the blue line next year in Luke & Nemec. Plus Bahl will be looked upon and a first time regular. Safe to say the D will take a massive step backwards. So while NJ is super stacked offensively...the goaltending & young D is still suspect and will need to steal a few games.
Love the vids OhNyquist! Just one thing, I recently played where the Devils were practicing and saw some of the team, by the sounds of, Schmid will get the starting job
Why do you say that? He’s a rookie, there gonna be a few growing pains when he gets into the NHL and he still ended with a .914. I feel like he’s only gonna get better with more experience
Any time you do a tier ranking and you don’t end up with a bell curve, you should always review your ranking criteria. You’re also sabotaging yourself a little bit with the names of your tiers-the “Good” tier is functionally your average tier, but you named the tier below the middle as your “Average” tier, which messes up your distribution. The fourth tier from the top should be “Poor” or “Below Average” or something like that. If you did that, you could probably move a couple of players from your Average tier to your Good tier, which would help you achieve closer to a bell curve. Also, with your Elite tier, you used two competing criteria-good goalies with excellent numbers and excellent goalies with good numbers. If Ulmark deserves to be on the Elite tier because of his numbers, then Vassy should probably be dropped a tier lower because of his numbers. You’re right about this being a tough thing to work out. Anyway, this should spark a good conversation. Nice job!
Thats criminal putting Adin Hill in good with the offseason he had. Logan Thompson also had a all-star season that makes no sense you'd put him with Hill if he was the starter.
I understand why you didn’t but I’d put Gibson in great. He is a super good goalie that has a team with some of the worst defence in the entire league. He himself is actually a very good goalie, he makes tons of saves but since he has no team infront of him, he faces too many shots to save. If you look back at when Anaheim was a good team, he was stellar. In 16-17, he had a record of 25-16-9. In those games, he had a GAA of 2.22 which is very good and a sv% of 0.924, which is also very good. He has been a super good goalie his entire career but he’s been stuck behind one of the worst teams in the entire league for a few seasons now.
As a Canucks fan, I don't begrudge your positioning of Demko in the "good" tier, but that's because it's hard for people outside Vancouver to understand what he goes through. The Canucks have been the worst defensively responsible team since the pandemic year, and Demko has done well to make them look even half respectable. As long as he's healthy, with the Canucks new direction in attention to defensive detail, he'll show what he's worth this season.
Your faith in markstrom will be rewarded Nyquist he’s a emotional guy with pride he’s gonna be hungry this year plus no more sutter playing mind games with him should help
The GOOD tier is a good place for Jarry after his inconsistent play, last season. He ended up as the 15th ranked starting goaltender, after being a top five goalie in the previous two seasons. Hopefully, he has a bounce-back year, and returns to form. Head-to-head, against all of the goaltenders in the Elite and Great tiers, over the course of his career, his record is 26-19-5, and only has a losing record against Vanecek, Ullmark, Shesturkin, and Skinner. Hopefully, when you do this ranking, next year, his play has warranted inclusion in the Great tier.
Vanacek’s reputation was ruined by the playoffs. He still got 3 shutouts in reg season and first Devils goalie to 30 wins in a season since Brodeur. Not bad at all.
This is a hot take I hope a goalie will win the hart trophy this season it’d be a nice change for the NHL but with mcdavid in the league idk if that’s possible
I wanna see SoroKING win it because the Isles wouldn’t even be playoff contenders without him. They can’t score and they’re outshot 50-20 every game. Even with the insane amounts of shots against and the lack of goals to support him, SoroKING has carried this team to relevance. He’s the only reason they made the playoffs this season. Last season, on a team that missed the playoffs, SoroKING was 2nd in the league in SV% and shutouts, and 4th in GAA. He beat out big names like Vasey, Markstrom, and Saros, who were all on playoff teams last season.
Should’ve had one in 21-22, but goaltenders winning the hart trophy is almost impossible at this point. At least Shesty got a finalist spot, but definitely deserved to win given how much he carried the rangers in that playoff run and season overall.
I’d easily put Veggie in the good tier. As someone who watches Arizona, he definitely has rough nights, but when he’s on, MY GOD is he unbeatable. Carter Hart was underrated here. I get his numbers looked bad, however the eye test tells you that the reason for that was the Flyers defense constantly left him out to dry. The Flyers dont win most of the games they did win without him
Poor John Gibson. He has had zero help in years. Deserves better than this ranking probably but it's hard to justify until he can play somewhere else and really showcase himself.

It's hilarious that people say the Leafs have no goaltending. Like where is that narrative even coming from? it's so confusing. Sammy was legit, that injury messed him up going into the playoffs though. Him and Woll is a real quality tandem with very high upside
Freddy and Bob definitely deserve more love. Bob was a conn smythe candidate for most of the playoffs and despite having some rough patches, he is a two time Vezina winner and a two time winner against the Presidents’ trophy winners. As for Freddy, if a guy like Alexander Georgiev is ranked as great, I think Andersen definitely deserves to be in the great tier as well.
Changes I would make is Montembeault moved up to average, Andersen & Keumper moved up to great, Oettinger moved down to great and Skinner moved down to good
Soely looking at numbers ok but i cant help but feel like hart and gibson got a very harsh rating, the teams in front of them have been far from defensively solid.
Korpisalo is way better than average. Last year he showed what he could do while being healthy. Had really good numbers on a shit columbus team and played really well for the kings.
@@KyleMacSkill He was bad but he was also injured, the year before in limited action with Carolina he was amazing, whereas we have Elvis somehow not in bad.

As a Flyers fan i also know the teams defense isn't up to par . It's a rebuild year anyway can't wait for the season also Couturier & Atkinson are the wil dcards depending how much rust they have
Putting Samsonov as Great, to me shows that you did put A LOT of bias on just 1 season not 3 seasons as a whole Since sure he did have that 1 career year… but never proved to be a starting caliber goalie before that And it showed this season where he’d be put in the BAD Tier
Any Goalie that Wins over 30 games a year? Is Solid! Good/Elite/Great! And of course? It Depends on the whole team aswell?. But if a Goalie is consistent with 20 plus wins a year? That’s pretty decent for this 100 points a Season 2020’s Era. Vasy had been having 30 win seasons consistently, this is basically a Modern day “Roy” “Hasek” “Brodeur” stats!👍🏼🔥.
Youre unfortunately bang on with Binnington and Gibson based off of your criteria. It's bizarre to see goalies that have been elite be so average so soon
Love your videos ohnyquist but wow that Sammy montembeault take made me screech although I watch all habs game he was the heart and soul and balled out almost daily when he was in that kid has great heart
I only have 2 gripes with this tier list. Bobrovsky is barely average for me, he has been basically irrelevant since he’s been in Florida. Wasn’t even good enough to be the starter for the playoffs. He was there because he caught lightning in a bottle. He will continue to be irrelevant moving forward. Gibson is a good goalie for me, on a decent team in front of him he more then a capable goalie. He single handily kept the Ducks in games. Im also an ex goalie so perhaps I see the position differently then other people who didn’t play. I also disagreed with others but non were as egregious as those 2 for me.

Elite: Saros, Sorokin, Vasy, Helle, Shesterkin
Great: Ullmark, Georgiev, Gus, Samsonov, Kuemper, Oettinger
Good: Jarry, Demko, Skinner, Thompson, Markström, Vanecek, Korpisalo, Grubauer, Andersen
Average: Husso, Gibson, Bobrovsky, Binnington, Markström, Vejmelka, Hart, Montembeault
Bad: Mrazek, Talbot, Blackwood, Merzlikins
Why is Monty bad exactly? And why is Bob the same rank as binnington and below markstrom. This is criminal
@@4u2nvHock3yI did a few changes as i looked back at it. You can have your own opinion as well :)
@@GoatzelEnjoyer Lists like these are subjective. So I respect it. I personally would liek to see Hart Bob and Husso in good along with Samsonov. But sorry for thr criticism. Just almost never see Monty get respect outside of Habs fans.
@@4u2nvHock3y Feels like half of these goalies had their performance level all over the place which makes an actual list outside of the elite 5 really difficult to make
Demko should be in great, Samsonov, Kuemper, and Georgiev should be in good
I know this list was made at the start of the season but holy smokes some of these got absolutely flip flopped. Talbot? Montembeault? Binnington? Hill? Would love to see these re-ranked!
Bro as a leaf fan I'm gna tell you Montembeault is in "good" and if his team in front wasn't trash he'd be easily in "great"
This may be on of the worst takes I’ve heard in a while. He hasn’t proven anything at all yet
oilers great goalie lmao
Having Talbot in bad even tho he played in the all star game a coupon years ago is a hot take
Have you seen him last year though?
Since fantasy is coming up this is needed lol
It's hilarious that people say the Leafs have no goaltending. Like where is that narrative even coming from? it's so confusing. Sammy was legit, that injury messed him up going into the playoffs though. Him and Woll is a real quality tandem with very high upside
Hes not a starter but hes better than ullmark. Sway is the way
Freddy and Bob definitely deserve more love.
Man, europe sure does know how to make elite goalies...... canada needs to have a prime price/holtby level goalie again
You got that right, I’m not even sure who would be the choice in net for Canada in a best on best tournament.
Really odd indeed to see that Canada doesn't have any elite goalies. It feels like this never happened before. Not sure what the reasons could be...
Changes I would make is Montembeault moved up to average, Andersen & Keumper moved up to great, Oettinger moved down to great and Skinner moved down to good
Lol buddy, if Kuemper and Andersen are great then Oettinger belongs in the Elite Category 😂
Montembeault is definitely not bad
Soely looking at numbers ok but i cant help but feel like hart and gibson got a very harsh rating, the teams in front of them have been far from defensively solid.
Have you done ranking starting line up for each team? Ik lines change a lot but it would be kinda sick¿
i honestly agree with this list. as a wild fan it blows to play against otter and saros lol
Korpisalo is way better than average. Last year he showed what he could do while being healthy. Had really good numbers on a shit columbus team and played really well for the kings.
I would argue that an .894SV% with a GSAx very close to 0 on that Chicago team deserves average for Mrazek
He was horrid for a good toronto team last year though so bad is where he belongs
@@KyleMacSkill He was bad but he was also injured, the year before in limited action with Carolina he was amazing, whereas we have Elvis somehow not in bad.
Ranking every teams fan base or ranking every teams projected starting line are some ideas
I would like that
Their is no way in hell you can call stewert skinny great with a 900% save percentage
He put up a .914 as a rookie behind Edmonton’s sometimes shaky defence. Idk, I think it’s justified
Demko being in any tier lower than great, Vanecek doesn't deserve to be in the great tier, and Oettinger shouldn't be in the elite tier, he hasn't shown an elite level of performance consistently enough to be ranked that high, and Samsonov is only good, not great. This is lunacy, come on man, I thought you were better than this
I may be a little biased but I feel like husso should be in good. He did decent in front of a pretty bad red wings defense especially after the deadline.
European goalies are built different
Skinner, Georgiev and Vanecek in the Great tier is pretty odd. Not sure how they have earned that tier ...
It’s an interesting arrangement, but like otter, ullmark and saros are in elite tier so I think great has some leakage from the better good goaltenders. I’d personally would only have shesty sorokin and vasy up in elite tier.
@@lomakinalex I agree Oettinger and Ullmark dont deserve elite. Saros definitely does tho. Guys like Oettinger and Ullmark should be making up great. Not guys like Vanecek and Skinner.
Its so wierd that you put skinner in good but husso and korpisalo in average😂😂
What weird about that. Skinner is good when compared to both of those players. Husso and Korpi are average goalies at least right now. It might change.
@@SaunaPerkele_5skinner was terrible in the playoffs, id say directly responsible for them losing
You should do some ranking all about the red wings. Current players maybe….?
Having Hart in the average category absolutely insane.
Honestly Mrázek and Montembeault, talbot have all been present supprises
kuemper great, 920+ sx% on a bad coyotes team then in Colorado and a sv% close to 920 when Washington actually tried
Probably the most underrated goalie in the league
If he stayed healthy, he could have won the Vezina in 2019-20
Having more goalies in "elite" than "great" kinda defeats the concept of elite.
You never have 7 vezina finalists.
Top six forward group.
I'm a Flyers fan with with them adding Petersen who i also hopes plays to . The last couple seasons seasons Hart has been way to many games in a row then getting hurt. My hope with Petersen as the backup they don't play him that many games and just see how does i think this season Hart show only get 50 to 55 games and see how he plays . As a Flyers fan i also know the teams defense isn't up to par . It's a rebuild year anyway can't wait for the season also Couturier & Atkinson are the wil dcards depending how much rust they have
Putting Samsonov as Great, to me shows that you did put A LOT of bias on just 1 season not 3 seasons as a whole
Since sure he did have that 1 career year… but never proved to be a starting caliber goalie before that
And it showed this season where he’d be put in the BAD Tier
I think should do top line of each team
Honestly, I agree with the whole list.
I think Otter belongs in Great. He's more streaky and up/down than the rest in Elite
Ulmark doesn't belong up there either. I would have put him in Good but after last season he belongs in Great
Sorokin is the goat
Fr
Last year's "goat"
Any Goalie that Wins over 30 games a year? Is Solid! Good/Elite/Great! And of course? It Depends on the whole team aswell?. But if a Goalie is consistent with 20 plus wins a year? That’s pretty decent for this 100 points a Season 2020’s Era. Vasy had been having 30 win seasons consistently, this is basically a Modern day “Roy” “Hasek” “Brodeur” stats!👍🏼🔥.
Look at Marc-Andre Fleury 2011-12, for example of a poor goaltender
I like how you put Gustavsson in the good tier on the thumbnail just to clickbait people 😂😂😂
You should rank every teams center core
Levi is gonna be elite
The kid is a stud
I think they rushed him, did they? Perhaps sign a veteran goaltender so Levi can be backup or starter in the minors
Youre unfortunately bang on with Binnington and Gibson based off of your criteria. It's bizarre to see goalies that have been elite be so average so soon
Rank every teams spending?
Love your videos ohnyquist but wow that Sammy montembeault take made me screech although I watch all habs game he was the heart and soul and balled out almost daily when he was in that kid has great heart
I just can’t fathom skimmer being better than Demko
yessss I have Otter for Yahoo fantasy
Ully is elite😁
Wasn't elite in that panthers bruins series
No he isn’t lol
He’s a great goalie but elite? Laughable at best
@@Enraged. facts lol
ever heard of injuries@@Eric.43
Do the same but with the best def and forw of each team (in you opinion) that'd be interesting :)
