  • "Do you think Mazda will be successful as a near luxury brand? Or will they have to accept that most people see them as a mainstream brand?" This question from Ben Kromminga was asked in the "LIVE Car Talk + Q&A Ep. 53" and I thought it was a great comment worth reposting for those that didn't see the livestream. The decision to copy and paste with CX-70 and CX-90 shows that Mazda isn't really intending to go premium. They just want to be give a premium impression while maintaining a mainstream price point.

    Mazda is also putting their own spin on luxury. While other luxury brands (even Lexus, Genesis, Infiniti, and BMW) do bandwagon stuff like baking climate controls into a touchscreen/capacitive panel for the sake of showcasing technical capabilities and mininalistic and futuristic styling, Mazda and Acura have a unique take, which is that form must follow function, great ergonomics is very important, and that tactile feedback speaks more about quality than aesthetics. Other brands are futuristic, Mazda and Acura are futureproof

      lmao, at Acura, form supersedes function IMO. Look at the TLX: bigger and heavier than the Accord on the outside yet smaller than the Civic on the inside. They did that for a "RWD aesthetic." And don't get me started on their infotainment. I like Honda but I don't like Acura.

    Just as Toyota created Lexus & Honda created Acura, Mazda should seriously consider developing a Luxury Brand with premium vehicles.
    -That'll also keep the cost in check for the most Mazda vehicles. Avg consumers won't put up with buying high-quality Mazdas @ an Escalade or BMW M3 price.

    How do people feel about current Mazda vs Acura or Infiniti? I often see people say current Mazda isn't luxury by comparing it to the German brands. But I really don't see much comparison to the other Japanese luxury brands. Lexus still has them beat on luxury, IMHO. But Acura or Infiniti? Would like to hear people's thoughts.

      I feel this same way . I used to have an Acura TL and a ZDX and the fit and finish wasn’t quite on the same level as my Cx9 that I currently have. (Other than the (4cyTurbo), I don’t see too much of a difference other than style preference between them and Infiniti or Acura

    I think Mazda will be successful with going up market. My only worry is that with so many automakers now trying to play the "premium" game, there won't be affordable options out there anymore for people that just want basic transportation.

  • @alexmassengale433
    @alexmassengale433 Месяц назад

    To be successful Mazda needs to up the practicality of their vehicles. The CX-5 and CX-50 are way behind the CRV and Rav4 (down almost ten cubic feet) in cargo space for instance and get much worse mileage without a hybrid option. A CX-90, despite being a really big car, has almost the same cargo space as a CRV (which is a much smaller car) behind the second row and is miles behind a Grand Highlander or Pilot on third row and cargo space. The premium move in terms of materials, etc goes a long way but not until they solve the practicality deficit. Ultimately thats what causes people to choose competing wagons.

    The one thing I've noticed is that Mazda has really nerfed their trims. My '19 Mazda 3 sedan is only the preferred trim, I have the bose stereo. Now you have to get the top premium plus turbo to get it - a 36k compact sedan. lolwut. There are other things like that but they've decontented in a way that's pretty repulsive if you compare year to year.

      To be honest with you I agree but as a Mazda 3 turbo premium plus owner myself. I was able to get my car for 32k when the price was(not inflated). Also, in my opinion the amount of money and the car itself I feel like I’ve got my moneys worth. Where a Acura Type R is close to 50k yes it’s 50k, and a Honda civic typer is around 39k- 47k. Also, after some mods on my Mazda 3 turbo Intake, downpipe and cat back exhaust then a tune. I’m make close to the power levels of thoses cars as well. I know that because one of my friends has a typer R Honda and we were neck and neck and his was modified with bolts on and a tune.

      @@micahhill4786I guess I just feel like mine at a MSRP of 25.5 just seemed like a steal. I didn't want a turbo or anything, so now you're forced to if you want the highly acclaimed stereo 🤷🏻‍♂️. Not saying the turbo premium plus isn't worth it, but I don't see a need for a lot of the random extras it comes with.

    I agree with the sentiment that a luxury brand can’t really have any econo models or trims (mentioned in the comments here). That being said it’s still going to take a while to shake the name/rep off and the dealerships will have to be nicer to match what they’re selling. Their cars are actually quite good, though!

    No, I don’t think Mazda is making a smart move by making their cars more expensive than the competition. People are clamoring for less expensive vehicles, and looking for value over luxury fluff. Mazda will continue have tiny marketshare.

    If Mazda increased the size of the Miata to a Z4 size and put some serious horsepower in it I would buy one. I like the looks of it. Mazda though is really dumb to keep pursuing the rotary, a low mileage, failed project compared to a normal motor. I think Mazda will continue to barely make it by.

    But to be a premium brand all your vehicles need to be premium meaning all your lower trims need to go away. Yes you can have a lower premium package but it still has to start at a basic premium level. I don’t care how nice it is, if you can have the same car in a lower trim level at a much cheaper price, people still see it as the cheaper car. That’s also why I would not consider VW as premium as some suggest. I think you either stop the lower trim cars or branch off with a premium brand.
