My van is in the shop, I was loaned a new CX-30. I think it is a wonderful car. Mind you I havent driven a new car since 2002, I am very impressed with this car. I'm 6'3" also so getting in it is a bit of a head crunch but hey, that's something tall people just get use to. I don't care for sitting so low, and I'm not use to having a long hood in front of me. I've driven vans since ....... 1982 and I grew up with VW busses since the 1960's and 70's. Would I buy the CX-30, simple version... Yes. I would definitely buy this car.
It does not flood in my area so I dont need a high floaty SUV with body motion. Smaller Mazda 3 MPG would also save a few bucks a day. In the end I will get the cheaper of the 2.
You read my mind, just the comparison I needed. Maybe I'm crazy, but I've been infatuated with the CX-30's plastic cladding and overall look since the first time I saw one in the wild, whereas the 3 reminds me of a mobius strip... it's TOO cohesive. Thing looks like a portal.
I have the 2023 CX30 AWD with the preferred pkg (N/A). So far, 18000 miles on it. This is my 9th Mazda since 1987 amongst a bunch of cars and trucks. They keep me coming back. I've had a manual Mazda3 as well. Surprisingly, the CX30 loves to be pushed in the twisties. Tight, mountain road twisties. I've driven many performance cars and was a lead driver for a Porsche driving experience here in the mountains. So keeping the CX30 in the context of what it is, the car performs very well. It's quite soft on normal drives, but I was impressed when pushing it. The handling with the awd system is inspiring. It even makes up a substantial amount for the cruddy OE tires. I use non ethynol gas, and until adding a roof basket, when driven normal, I was getting 34-36 average mpg. 36-40 hwy. After the roof basket addition, mileage dropped to around 30 average, 34 hwy. The car was quite quiet until adding the roof basket as well. I'm 6' and comfortable in it. I've had adults in the back that all said they were comfortable during a 200 mile drive. So don't always believe the critics. I've done several 12hr trips and find it comfortable. I always drive in "sport" or manual to keep the car in the right power/gear unless on the hwy. In normal transmission mode, the car wants to sip gas, so it seems to hunt for the gear it thinks you want. Sport eliminates that hunt and is a much better driving experience. Sport also cancels out the cylinder deactivation, which I prefer. There is no real mpg difference in sport (assuming normal, non hwy driving). Be a driver. #zoomzoom
Great feedback! These are some of the questions I have had about true performance, as I have driven quick cars and motorcycles all my life. The performance is a big deal for me, especially in the twisties! Is it the turbo version? Have you had any issues with reliability?
@andrewSUN17 I chose the NA engine for long term reliability. No issues until I was t-boned and totalled last night. Waiting on insurance and will likely get another cx30.

I love my White Pearl cx30. I really like its sporty black- and white look, it looks lighter and nicely elevated. I have 1.5 years now - so far so good.
Generally I'd prefer a Japan made Mazda 3 to a Mexican assembled cx30. With the state of America's crumbling infrastructure though, it feels like cars are becoming a more difficult sell.
Agreed. I think the biggest reason for the quality disparity was the countries where the different vehicles are assembled. Mexico may have cheaper labor costs, but that comes at the expense of quality.
Agreed. States and towns aren't willing to fix roads correctly, and they're laid out and designed so poorly. They've been awarding jobs to the lowest bidder or "the local guy" and it shows. And it's not like we get a refund because the town decided not to pay for a good job. In fact we get stuck with the costs: excessive and early wear to vehicles, higher chances of tires ripping or bubbling, higher purchase prices and gas costs as people are encouraged to get heavier and less aerodynamic form factors. Not to mention the safety factors taller vehicles with bigger blind spots pose at all speeds.
My Mexico-built 2022 CX-30 has been 100% defect & problem/issue free for over 2 years now. Not even a token cabin rattle yet to annoy me. My Japan-built 2020 Toyota Corolla SE 6-MT sedan was a bag full of defects & problems & I ditched it after 2 years & 10K miles due to all the headaches (& 2 towing adventures after being left stranded across town). My France-built 2015 Toyota Yaris SE hatch 5-MT also was a problem-fee experience except for one very minor build defect that was easily corrected by the dealership. Times change. Made in Japan vs made elsewhere isn't what it used to be. It's mostly a roll of the dice these days.
I think the CX 30 will ultimately replace the 3. The CX30 is nice but needs a redesign sooner rather than later. I have 2020 Mazda 3 Premium and absolutely love it!
They drive significantly different, the raised height makes more difference than seems apparent. The 3 has a longer wheelbase and driving them back to back the 3 handles far better. I don't think the 3 will be replaced at all. My roommate has a cx-30 and I have the 3 hatch. Was given a 30 as a loaner. I also considered the 30 when shopping but the ride height and driving position immediately turned me off.
@@calebwany8422 All car manufacturers are removing their cars and sedan options in North America because they don't sell... Simply read the comments of this video. For the vast majority of people, cars and hatchbacks are perfect, but for some reasons people buy crossovers even though they aren't really better. People think they need extra ground clearance, but in reality it is useless to 99,99% of people, and I say this as a Canadian living in a very snowy city.
It also needs independent rear suspension, like the Honda HRV has. I got a CX-30 for a loaner while my 2017 Mazda 3 was getting a new transmission. The torsion beam is horrible.
My roommate has a CX-30 lease and i have a 3 turbo hb. I know on paper people say "they're the same car" but driving them back to back they are noticably different. In addition to the high center of gravity the CX-30 has a shorter wheelbase. Torsion beam comments to the side, the 3 handles corners far better. By comparison the CX-30 is on stilts. Plus I mean the looks alone, send in the 3 hatch, or the sedan. That cladding on the 30.... Also the FWD mazda3, in addition to being significantly more efficient, gets an extra half gallon capacity in the fuel tank
That's exactly the thing. I know it's not in the comparison but I love the CX-5. However, as someone who doesn't have to worry about hauling family, I'd prefer something smaller and was looking at the CX-30. I'd get the hatchback 3 but I like taking occasional camping trips so the elevation of the 30 is more welcome. I'd get a crosstrek but the sleepy upgraded engine worries me during long drives when I have to pass semis, RVs, etc. Now... congratulations to all who have the CX-30 and love the cladding but I absolutely abhor it. I loathe the cladding. I hate how it doesn't feel stylized at all - the new crosstrek and kona all have a buncha cladding but it's shaped in a way that at least it looks cool (imo). meanwhile, the CX-30's cladding is just 6 inches of following the curves and borders of the car. it feels lazy. It also reminds me of a starcraft 1's zerg overlord's lips lol.
I saw some overseas body mod kits for the CX-30 making it look like pretty cool (again, imo) giant hot wheels-ish, raised hatchback car/suv thing which makes the cladding look more acceptable. but why would I buy a new car then spend extra for that? I could be spending that money clear coating the car instead or something.
@@KyrosX27Get CX-30 in black or Machine Gray as the cladding is barely noticable with these colours. I wouldnt go with Soul Red, White or Silver as the cladding really pops out on these. I´have had CX-30 for 4 years and it was an amazing car. Great combination of utility and agility.
When you stated the driving position was identical between the CX-30 and Mazda 3, it was a total deal breaker for me. Any time your knees are higher than your hips, comfort is compromised. Perhaps not for someone under 30, anyone else, a firm yes. Too bad as I really like the rest of the vehicle.
I just bought my cx-30 last week and almost immediately removed the center headrest. I've never driven a car with 4 passengers (parents minivan notwithstanding). Visibility improved greatly with it gone.
I would really like a Made in Hiroshima Spirit Racing CX-30 or even a proper CX-30 hybrid would be incredible. At the very least, it would be great if the turbo trims were Made in Japan so that I can worry a little less about reliability. I'd go for a Mazda 3 hatch (better interior design like the doors and black headliner) but unfortunately I live somewhere with harsh winters and roads where a little more ground clearance is needed.
I have the 2024 Turbo Hatch and I also live in the mountains, Im not lying the AWD in the snow is truly INCREDIBLE. I had a 2020 NA model before I got this and I will say it wasnt as good as the new 2024. Ive driven in over 14 inches of snow going uphill in the middle of a storm no problem
I wanted a MT Mazda3 but could not for this very simple but frustrating reason: I live in Quebec. We have garbage roads and harsh winters, and so the additional ground clearance, body cladding, and AWD are a must, for a vehicle you have to rely on during the winter months. I am planning on getting a MT Mazda3 in a few years, as a second vehicle, if they still offer them at that point 🙄 The MT's slow disappearance is quite worrisome for me. I am completely unable to enjoy driving automatic cars. They just feel so boring and uninvolved.
@@janoycresnova9156 I'll think about it. I had a bad experience buying a previously abused Crosstrek last year. But yes, it checks all the boxes... except the hatch. Which is a reeaal bummer. When that comes back, be sure I'll get one 🤙
There many manual transmission cars that are around, but like you said depending on locations in particular that limits a lot of options. Porsche still gives out manuals, but they are very pricey. Hyundais have some on their end, but they are phasing it out and they are FF cars. Toyota, Mazda, Subaru, and Honda being the last Japanese cars to offer manuals will again depend on the situation. WRX or the GR Corolla would be a pick for AWD system. Fun cars will be the BRZ, Miata, Mazda 3, Civic Type R. The other question is the stupid price and mark ups and is it worth it? Always those stupid reality questions.
Ugh my fiance wants the hatchback 3 and in a way I do too but with incentives and the deal the CX3 just makes sense. We even get the carbon edition. But driving the Mazda3 was fun
@@es-qf2gwlol well the Cx-30 honestly is a what the Corolla fros is to the Corolla. But it has a bit of ground clearance. However, inside it just feels a bit cheaper and the cladding on the outside also makes it look cheap. They both drive nicely. We were able to negotiate the hatback3 carbon edition (non turbo) to a same out the door price as the Cx-30 but since it’s a lease, due to the residual value it’s more expensive to lease mthly. All in all, I’m still torn hhahaha
The CX-30’s higher ride height and taller interior makes it more practical. Extremely agile and quick with the turbo engine. The infotainment screen is perfectly sized for the cabin size.
Higher ride height or ground clearance isn't as practical if you ain't going off-pavement. The lower ground clearance would provide better agility / handling than the SUV.
Why do you need that ground clearance for? I live in Saguenay which is the second snowiest city in all of Canada and I never had any single problem with my 3 hatchback even in snowstorms
One frustrating thing is that in Canada, you can get a turbo CX-30 with a red interior but here in the United States, the combination is not available and the Carbon Turbo only comes in that baby puke sand color
The color combos are strange. I saw in Canada the MX-5 could come with white leather and tan interior (James from TH) while here we only have black or terracotta (darker tan).
Yesterday, I test drove both the 3 and 30 in GT trim and found the 3 rear suspension too harsh but the 30 was very compliant. Looking to pull the trigger on the 30 next week. Machine Grey Metallic with red leather seats.
Love my 2017 Mazda 3 automatic sedan. I maintain it and it performs excellent. Never been roadside! Affordable overall. Next will be the CX-30 since getting older and it sits higher as the video states easier getting in and out. 😅
I live in Canada where we get tons of snow and ice, and I can tell you that AWD does NOT matter. If you’re even half competent at driving, FWD will always get the job done. I’ll take the better fuel economy and simplicity of FWD over the ego boost of AWD.
In France and probably Europe as a whole, it seems the excellent six speed manual gearbox was last supplied in 2022. If so it was a sad day for car lovers😢
The CX-30 looks squished in from the sides, too narrow, whereas the Mazda 3 is a classic wider low riding sedan. I don't get the whole SUV craze. You pay more for a car that is less safe, higher center of gravity.
In Australia we get both FWD & AWD however most people purchase the FWD. This saves $3,000 for a weight saving of 200lbs and hence improved fuel economy on both counts. 99.9% of Australia never sees snow so AWD is irrelevant. Very well manufactured cars with excellent quality components however let down with gimmicks of iStop and cylinder de-activation and the engine is an Otto/Atkinson hybrid and is still a "beta" in my mind. The automatic transmission is also rather jerky as Mazda's software is certainly "trying" to lock up the clutch pack right down to just 15 mph which is just silly.
I definitely prefer the looks of the three, but I don’t think any of these cars is winning any practicality awards. They are about a size to two size is smaller than everything they compete with in their class. If you want to use the backseats for anyone in these, they are a terrible time.
I wish I had had the opportunity to watch this video before I purchased my Mazda 3. I have had my new car for 2 weeks and it is so uncomfortable, the seats are so low. Especially the copilot seat, I got the preferred trim, and I did the driving test, but at 10 min I didn't realize this important detail. I hate this car, every time I drive my new car I end up with hip pain. I had a Mazda 3 2009 and that car was so much more comfortable and had more interior space. I don't recommend this car at all. Also, there is no 12v outlet there is no way to install my camera. I hate the new style. I don't know what to do in this situation!! This is so frustrating.
I disagree with the statement that Mazda "isn't known as being tech savvy". I have a 2019 Mazda3 and most of the tech is there but it is not obtrusive. It is not in your face like it is in many vehicles. If you are looking for a car to enjoy driving, get a Mazda. If you want a car that looks like a video game, go elsewhere.
We test drive our choices at least 3 times each, over a few weeks. The good and bad points start to stand out more. Maybe buy a used version of a more expensive vehicle instead.
I opted for a 2022 Mazda CX-30 CE a couple years back. Wasn't a fan of the weird, bulbous Mazda3 hatch rear styling & look of it from various angles. Also prefer the elevated ground clearance & seating/driving position of the CX-30 vs the Mazda3. I would go for the sedan if I went Mazda3, simply due to aesthetics, even if less practical than the hatch.
Last year when I was shopping for my 5th Mazda in 40 years (83 626, 90 626, 07 Mazda6, 14 Mazda3--there was a 95 Ford in the middle), I measured the cargo areas up to the safe load line (no blocking the rear view or above the front seat backs) of the CX-30 and the Mazda3 5-door. With rear seats down the CX-30 is an inch longer and an inch taller but the Mazda3 is an inch wider, which I find more useful; the total difference is miniscule. Since the Mazda3's dimensions were so close to my 14 I knew it would work. The CX-30's price premium was actually larger because the cargo cover isn't standard, and it was still selling over list, while the Mazda3 was under. AWD fuel economy is identical. The CX-30 did have my preferred Deep Crystal Blue with White leather interior, but I also like the Polymetal Gray with Red leather, so that's the Mazda3 I bought. The lack of power liftgate doesn't bother me; I'm old but not infirm or lazy.
The only reason the CX 30 exists is that Americans equate ride height with safety, not center of gravity and driving dynamics. I own a 2016 3 grand touring and I was looking to replace it with the newer 3 but when Mazda ditched the muti link rear for the twist beam axke i was out. I love to drive and place driving dynamics above all else including comfort. But I suspect most people do not.
@@MrMartingale1 so a multi link rear suspension allows for each tire to maintain its contact patch independently flat to the ground during cornering and handling adding to overall stability while keeping the rear end planted non independent rear ends are easily upset leading to poor handling and potentially the rear end stepping out over uneven pavement
This is theoretical and how it applies to a specific vehicle under real conditions may depend on a variety of factors. I've yet to see a review of a recent Mazda 3 that claims the car doesn't handle superbly. No one has related the type of rear suspension in this car to any handling shortcomings short of extreme driving conditions. In addition, it's simpler design is more durable considering the poor road conditions in and around most urban areas.
Mazda 3 saloon over the hatch in the UK over the CX30 which costs the most here. Saloon roomier in back than hatch, brighter and less claustrophobic. More cargo space with slight versatility hit. More planted on the road and best fuel economy of the the trio, as better drag figs. But bizarrely, everybody flocking to heavier crossovers here, causing potholes, drinking more fuel and killing more pedestrians. Funny old world.
What about other reviewers that say when the 3 is pushed hard, it gets out of control? Especially on windy roads. Whereas the 30 does not. Sara n Tuned channel said that in a vid called The Wildcard Option 2024 Mazda3 Turbo AWD Review that reviewed the 3. Go to 8:47 into the vid. She's done a ocmparision vid like this one, as well. Weirdly, she took the CX30 off road and it performed shockingly well. She's kind of manly and goes into more details about engines and tech points than most reviewers. I can't tell if it's her or if she's merely reading a script that someone else wrote (a man). I would guess the latter. I like your review style better and I'm not endorsing her. I couldn't understand half of what she said. She slurs her speech. She's sex ywith low cut tops but hard to understand and I'm not sure she knows what she is talking about. I'm guessing her first language is not English. Maybe Czech. But the accent is very slight. Most people wouldn't notice. I only noticed because she sounds like Ann deVille who moved to Czech and sounds that way now. I used to know her as a barista in Portland. I don't watch her vids.
Nice cars for shorter people (those under 6’1 1”). As you said, very claustrophobic interior. Would not cross shop either of these (even with the turbo) with the VW GTI / Subaru WRX. Thanks for the excellent review.
Still can’t get past the cylinder deactivation on the N/A 2.5 no one talks about this very much I know Chevy and other manufacturers have had nothing but problems so I will pass for that reason
They were unreliable in the 80's and 90's, but GM is really the only one who has problems in the modern era with it (and not widespread). The trend amongst automakers is that when cylinder deactivation is first introduced there's 2-3 years of less reliability followed by years of it working just fine. Honda's have had it in their V6 without issue for well over a decade, and plenty of testimony of people owning vehicles long term with it. There are plenty of issues from people messing with the ECU on their car getting engine damage, but that's just a bad tune job on their part.
@@markcoopers1930idk who pays you to say cylinder deactivation is trouble free but that feature will destroy any engine much quicker than normal. So far i cant find a single mechanic that recommends buying a car with it. People dont understand the physics of a piston moving in a cold cylinder.
Unfortunately that jekyll & hyde engine is too gutless, has poor torque down low and is a mechanic's nightmare if anything remotely needs attending to. Under the bonnet is it ALL engine plus it's taken them over decade to make them passable for reliability for the long term. Not good Mazda!

@@quietlyridinglife1630 On man so sorry to learn that! I understand from LA driving, was hit from behind by 3 or 4 vehicles in my QX50. Sucks so bad, as it's not your fault, yet you need to jump through all the hoops! Wishing the best for a speedy new CX30 for you!
Yes sir. I have a mazda3 made in Japan 🇯🇵
@@stevenjames1138USA doesn't have cheap labor, yet USA produces Jeep and several other cars with subpar reliability. Make it make sense.
There are very few 3s in stock compared to the 30s. It's sad that the car companies are steering folks to trucks.
I have Mazda 3 sedan, bigger boot than cx-30 or hatch, manual gearbox. To me the best out of these 3 options (cx-30, 3 hatch, 3 sedan)
Exactly, I feel the cx 30 is just like the hatch but they merely raised it a bit. And were i'm from, the hatch is for females.
No way the hatch is going to be replaced
Not everyone wants an SUV. I much prefer the 3 hatch and better driving dynamics of cars.
The hatchback is made in japan, the CX-30 mexico. Enough said, the real debate is Hatchback Mazda3 vs CX-5. You're all very welcome
Small screen? Good.
I don't like those big screens cutting inyo my view.
Just remove the headrest in the back.better vision.
I just bought my cx-30 last week and almost immediately removed the center headrest. I've never driven a car with 4 passengers (parents minivan notwithstanding). Visibility improved greatly with it gone.
Excellent, thank you. I'm going to buy a used CX-3 or CX-30, just don't yet know which, so this vid is very helpful.
I wanted a MT Mazda3 but could not for this very simple but frustrating reason:
I live in Quebec. We have garbage roads and harsh winters, and so the additional ground clearance, body cladding, and AWD are a must, for a vehicle you have to rely on during the winter months.
I am planning on getting a MT Mazda3 in a few years, as a second vehicle, if they still offer them at that point 🙄
The MT's slow disappearance is quite worrisome for me. I am completely unable to enjoy driving automatic cars. They just feel so boring and uninvolved.
Get the WRX. It ticks all the boxes, except maybe for ground clearance.
Golf GTi. Porsche GT3. Ferrari 488 all great cars to drive in auto.
Was this video shot in summer?
The CX-30’s higher ride height and taller interior makes it more practical. Extremely agile and quick with the turbo engine.
The infotainment screen is perfectly sized for the cabin size.
Higher ride height or ground clearance isn't as practical if you ain't going off-pavement. The lower ground clearance would provide better agility / handling than the SUV.

Mazda 3 hatchback the best!
I bought the cx30 for the higher ground clearance
Why do you need that ground clearance for? I live in Saguenay which is the second snowiest city in all of Canada and I never had any single problem with my 3 hatchback even in snowstorms

Mazda 3 hatch manual all the way.. wonder the 3 hatch redesign will be
Cx30 and 3 sedan are made in México, hatchback in Japan 😌
Whoever designed this year's Carbon Edition paint needs to be fired immediately
Is it a good idea to get a Mazda 3 1.5L (118hp) instead of a CX-30 2.0 (155hp)? These are only available trims in my country
Get the hatch, end of story
BEAUTIFUL CAR!!
Love my 2017 Mazda 3 automatic sedan. I maintain it and it performs excellent. Never been roadside! Affordable overall. Next will be the CX-30 since getting older and it sits higher as the video states easier getting in and out. 😅
They both have horrible visibility and badly lack rear and boot space. Apart from that they're both great.
3 hatch all day. 3 is 3 inches longer than 30. You can squeeze in a queen size mattress plus a 45-55 inch tv in 3 but can't do so in 30
I’m not sure why all wheel drive matters to 90% of the American public. It doesn’t.
I live in Canada where we get tons of snow and ice, and I can tell you that AWD does NOT matter. If you’re even half competent at driving, FWD will always get the job done. I’ll take the better fuel economy and simplicity of FWD over the ego boost of AWD.
I live in Buffalo NY. Speak for yourself.
Awd is not only for bad conditions but also driving dynamics.
I get annoyed about the CX30's Black panels.
You pay more for a car that is less safe, higher center of gravity.
but are parts interchangeable??? like suspension??
They used to have a FWD CX-30 in the US. I definitely would have bought it for the reasons you mention.
I like the CX 30 BETTER
Leatherette upholstery is a big down grade from fabric unless the it’s heated and cooled.
I definitely prefer the looks of the three, but I don’t think any of these cars is winning any practicality awards. They are about a size to two size is smaller than everything they compete with in their class. If you want to use the backseats for anyone in these, they are a terrible time.
The 3 hatchback is a head turner for sure. 30 looks so boring. Any car lover would choose the 3
I wish I had had the opportunity to watch this video before I purchased my Mazda 3.
I'm pissed. Mazda offers only FWD 1.5 as base and topped at 2.0 NA for Mazda 3 and just 2.0 NA FWD for CX 30 over here
It's a good quality Mazda CX30
I disagree with the statement that Mazda "isn't known as being tech savvy". I have a 2019 Mazda3 and most of the tech is there but it is not obtrusive. It is not in your face like it is in many vehicles. If you are looking for a car to enjoy driving, get a Mazda. If you want a car that looks like a video game, go elsewhere.
Mazda3 had mt so there was no choice unfortunately
We test drive our choices at least 3 times each, over a few weeks. The good and bad points start to stand out more. Maybe buy a used version of a more expensive vehicle instead.
With current incentives and inflated used prices, I might actually say new is a smarter buy versus lightly used!

I'm torn between the hyundai kona n line s and ultimate at the min
Having a CX30 during Covid in Thailand rented both Q3 and X3’s in Europe in the past couple of summers - I hate them compared to Mazda.
Sadly that manual transmission only comes in the gt! Which is stupid!!
The lack of power liftgate doesn't bother me; I'm old but not infirm or lazy.
i ❤ MAZDA
The only reason the CX 30 exists is that Americans equate ride height with safety, not center of gravity and driving dynamics. I own a 2016 3 grand touring and I was looking to replace it with the newer 3 but when Mazda ditched the muti link rear for the twist beam axke i was out. I love to drive and place driving dynamics above all else including comfort. But I suspect most people do not.
im new to cars. what is a multi link rear?
I just think the 3 hatchback looks better than the cx-30
Mazda 3 saloon over the hatch in the UK over the CX30 which costs the most here. Saloon roomier in back than hatch, brighter and less claustrophobic. More cargo space with slight versatility hit. More planted on the road and best fuel economy of the the trio, as better drag figs. But bizarrely, everybody flocking to heavier crossovers here, causing potholes, drinking more fuel and killing more pedestrians. Funny old world.
In Europe we only gett he 2l NA engines.
it's mad that mazda still gets away with selling cars without usable rear seats
I own a 3 hatchback and no one ever complained to me about sitting in the back seats
Any of them has an independent rear suspension???????
The NA cx30 has a lethargic acceleration. Had to go with the 3 PP turbo. Very different cars
